Living Agelessly

As of today, I'm officially closer to 60 than 50. You know what that means?

Nothing.

Okay, well, it means I'm closer to some really good discounts and there are some residential communities I qualify for, but otherwise, it means nothing.

One of the questions I read last year that has been germinating in my soul is : If you didn't now when you were born, what would you be doing?

One of my goals is to do a full buy-in on that premise.

There is a lot to that, but one of the things I'm being intentional about this year are the people I spend time with because people's attitudes and words create an environment of growth or stagnancy.

Growth can be challenging enough. No point adding dead weight when you are working on flying.

I have started following people on Instagram that challenge me. I am spending more time with people who are challenging themselves and are comfortable with the discomfort and ups and downs of growth. People who are critical or negative are not getting air time.

A well-known story in the Bible is how the Israelites died in the wilderness because they believed the 10 unbelieving spies.

Let's look at those 10 spies and the influence they had. The obvious is that they didn't trust God. They had a pathetic view of themselves. They saw themselves as weak and incapable of accomplishing amazing things. They really loved their comfort zones. They didn't want to take responsibility for themselves. They would rather be slaves to someone else than take responsibility for their personal growth. They not only died in the wilderness, their influence caused others to die in the wilderness too.

In contrast, Joshua and Caleb... Had absolute trust in God. Believed they were chosen for great escapades and inheritance. Was comfortable doing amazing things and expecting God to do the impossible. Believed with God on their side they were absolutely enough to accomplish whatever had to be done. Would rather die being God's than live long lives as slaves. Led a nation, took land, defeated giants, and saw age as proof of God's promise not a disqualified of God's promise.

I don't know what your goals are, but the people around you matter. The voices you allow in your head space matter. The impact people have on your mood matters.

Believe it or not, age has little to do with what you are able to accomplish. The people you choose to have around you has a huge impact on what you accomplish. Choose wisely.

Happy to be Thirty

Are we thriving yet?

I heard that in your twenties, you want everyone to like you, but your thirties are for liking yourself.

I’m not going out as much and do prefer a night in, and the guarantee of a hangover is scarier than waking up with wrinkles. There’s a needle, pill, laser, you name it, for that, so I’m told. For now, it’s easier to say I’d trade a laugh line for a debilitating migraine.

I’m not worried about turning thirty or even dreading it or its expectations and clichés, and I’m even looking forward to the decade upgrade. When I really think about it, I’m indifferent. What does “thirty” matter?

I still own a handful of clothes I’ve hung onto since college, though they feel as if they’ve shrunk a bit, on occasion, I get carded at the store when a bottle or two end up on my grocery list, and everyone on social media who is half my age, instead looks it, thanks to filters, fillers, and Botox.

Sure, I won’t be in my twenties-era anymore, which, honestly, thank God, or have the metabolism that comes with that, dammit, but I do have some wisdom and lessons learned to hold onto, some much harder than others, and years, God-willing, ahead to look forward to.

Would I change anything? Of course.

It seems like now, we’re all telling ourselves we’re “doing the work” and “self-care” to become better, healthier, stronger - thriving. Some of it feels like it’s just a bunch of horoscopes and star signs, manifestations, and self-actualizations, and maybe, some of it isn’t.

Thirty isn’t quite here yet, but it’s close. I’m looking forward to it and whatever that means and wherever that goes, I’ll be pretty damn happy to be thirty.
