Redmi Note 7 Review
Xiaomi Redmi Note 7 full review Following a Chinese launch in January the Redmi Note 7 officially went on sale in the UK on 7 May, charging straight into the top spot in both our UK and Chinese budget phone charts, knocking the Mi A2 Lite off its perch. It's the first phone from newly spun-off Xiaomi sub-brand Redmi, and as such it marks a huge departure from Redmi as you know it.
Headlining is a 48Mp dual-lens camera, and Redmi Note 7 was actually the first Xiaomi phone to pack such a high megapixel count - though Mi 9 then came along and did it better. There are some similarities between this budget phone and Xiaomi's flagship, but Redmi Note 7 is much more closely aligned in specs and performance with the Oppo F11 Pro, another Chinese phone that has not yet gone on sale in the UK (and may not ever do so).
It's also got a large 6.3in Full-HD+ screen and promises all day runtime from a 4000mAh battery with Quick Charge 4 support. Plus some users will be very happy to see the inclusion of a traditional 3.5mm headphone jack.
Xiaomi has kept down costs by specifying a mid-range Snapdragon 660 chip and 3- or 4GB of RAM, allowing this budget Android to be available from as little as £179. That's for the 3GB RAM, 32GB storage model, while the 6GB RAM, 64GB storage model we review here costs £199. There's also a 128GB storage version at £249. You can choose from Space Black or Neptune Blue colour options.
Right now GearBest is offering an incredible deal on the entry-level 3GB/32GB option, where it costs just £113.54.
You can also buy Redmi Note 7 direct from Xiaomi, or from retailers such as Amazon. It will also be available on a contract basis from Vodafone.
The Redmi Note 7 is available in Europe from 179€, but if you're looking to buy in the US you'll need to import it from a site such as GearBest or Geekbuying. The latter is currently stocking the global version of the top-end Redmi Note 7 at the discounted price of £170.01/$209.99/185.57€. Do remember to take into account potential import duty fees, which is calculated at 20 percent of the value on the shipping paperwork.

Redmi Note 7 Design & Build Redmi Note 7 is not all that dissimilar in design to the flagship Mi 9, which packs a fractionally larger (6.39in) screen into an ever so slightly smaller chassis. Both have tall 19.5:9 panels and slim bezels - naturally slimmer on the Mi 9, but the only place this is really obvious to the untrained eye is on its smaller chin.
Each also feature a Dot Drop (waterdrop-style) notch to maximise the available screen space and house the selfie camera, which is more obvious on Mi 9 with its larger 20Mp sensor (Redmi Note 7 has a 13Mp front camera). There's also a blink-and-you'll-miss-it slit at the extreme edge between the screen and frame for the earpiece.
Around the back you'll find some more obvious differences, however, with a dual- rather than triple lens camera on the Redmi Note 7, the Redmi rather than Mi logo, and a physical fingerprint sensor. All members of the flagship Mi 9 family now use an in-display fingerprint sensor.

Arguably physical fingerprint sensors typically work better than these early in-display versions, and though it might be a fancy new feature to have the omission is not a game-changer.
Redmi Note 7 review
We tested the Black version so were unable to enjoy the gradient finish of the Blue model, but in pictures it looks gorgeous. With a glass back and front the Redmi Note 7 has a very premium design for a phone at this price point, and is only fractionally thicker than Xiaomi's flagship family at 8.1mm, though you will notice that glossy frame is plastic rather than metal. That extra space inside the case enables it to include a capacious 4,000mAh battery, too, matching the spec of the recently announced Mi 9T.
Something you won't find on Mi 9 phones (save for the Mi 9T) is the Redmi Note 7's 3.5mm headphone jack, which sits on the top edge of the phone alongside another increasingly rare feature: an IR blaster. While phone makers are rapidly making the switch over to USB-C audio, there are still plenty of users who want to use their existing earphones without an adaptor. Redmi Note 7 also has a bottom-firing mono speaker for audio.
At 6.3in the display is expansive, and ideal for watching high-resolution video and playing games. This is not the same AMOLED technology on Mi 9, but it's still good for the money, and actually nearly as bright - we recorded 398 nits using a Spyder. With a 2340x1080 Full-HD+ resolution everything is super-clear, too.
Although the Redmi Note 7 runs MIUI 10, on our review sample the system-wide Dark Mode setting found in the flagships is not available. It's possible this will come in the next update, with the Redmi running 10.3.2.0 and our Mi 9 running 10.3.3.0. This is useful not only because it seems to be the latest trend to do everything in Dark Mode, but because it drastically reduces the screen's impact on battery life.
The Redmi Note 7 also lacks the Ambient Display (always-on) mode found in Xiaomi flagships, which can additionally help you maintain battery life by reducing the frequency with which you feel you need to wake the phone to check the time or notifications. That could be an issue here, since Redmi Note 7 has the most ridiculous notification LED we've ever seen - it flashes up below the screen but is the tiniest little dot you could easily miss it completely.
Redmi Note 7 review
None of Xiaomi's current smartphone line-up is waterproof, though we wouldn't necessarily expect to find this feature at this price anyhow. Xiaomi also keeps down costs by excluding wireless charging from this phone, though it does support Quick Charge 4 and is supplied with a 10W USB-C charger in the box.
As with all Xiaomi phones you'll also find a silicon case is supplied, a nice touch given that these are not easily obtainable in UK High Street stores. The Note 7 does feature Gorilla Glass 5 to help protect it from scratches, but it is not infallible.
Redmi Note 7 Core Hardware & Performance The Note 7 is fitted with a 2.2GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 660 14nm chip, which integrates an 850MHz Adreno 512 GPU. This is a step down from the also mid-range Snapdragon 712 and 730 found in the Mi 9 SE and 9T, but there's not a huge difference in performance - at least not anything the average user would be able to perceive - as you'll see in the comparison chart below.
You'll have seen this chip before, in the likes of the Xiaomi Mi 8 Lite, Xiaomi Mi A2, Nokia 7 Plus, Samsung Galaxy A9, Elephone U Pro and so forth. It's quite a popular processor. And while Redmi Note 7 is not significantly faster than any of those other phones that use it, something you should note is that it is significantly cheaper.
The Redmi Note 7 offers capable - if not flagship - daily performance, and provided you don't turn up the detail too much some very playable framerates. In GFXBench's T-Rex and Manhattan tests we recorded 46- and 21fps, for example.
The 4000mAh battery inside is good for a day's use, but no more. In Geekbench 4's battery test we recorded 7 hours 16 minutes, which is actually a pretty middling score and a little lower than we had anticipated given the huge capacity of the battery.
As we mentioned earlier on in this review you get a choice of 3- or 4GB of RAM. We tested the latter, and this is the version we recommend for the best performance, especially when it costs only an extra £20.
Redmi Note 7 review
A major advantage of Redmi over Mi is its support for storage expansion, so there's no reason why you shouldn't opt for the lower-capacity version and bolt on extra storage later, if and when you need it. Redmi Note 7 can accept microSD cards up to 256GB via a hybrid SIM tray - you must choose between dual-SIM functionality and storage expansion. If you do opt for a second SIM instead, know that either SIM slot can be used for 4G data, but unlike with the Mi 9 family you can't use 4G on both at once.
In terms of connectivity there's also dual-band 802.11ac Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 5.0, GPS and an IR blaster. You will not find NFC for making mobile payments, so if this is important to you step up to the Mi line.
Redmi Note 7 Cameras & Photography For a budget phone the Redmi Note 7's cameras are pretty good, though not quite as good as the marketing might have you believe.
The star of the show is a 48Mp lens that by default actually takes 12Mp shots. This is because it combines four pixels into one, averaging out the quality, exposure, colours and so on to create one significantly better-looking super pixel.
This is paired with a 5Mp secondary lens for blurred background (bokeh) shots, and together the Note 7 is capable of some decent - if a little dull - photography, given good lighting. Zoom right in and some noise is visible, but zoomed out the results are more than acceptable for a sub-£200 phone.
In low lighting the camera has more work to do, and even in Night mode it still struggles. Here you need to be really careful to keep the camera still for what feels like forever as it processes the shot. Though it did a good job of picking out different colours, including the different shades of black, text can be a little fuzzy and edges less well defined. Not a bad result, but equally not the best.
This is an AI camera, which means Xiaomi's software can intelligently set an appropriate preset for the shooting scenario. The app is very easy to use, and you can quickly switch between photo and video, Portrait, Night, Square, Panorama and Pro modes, and there's a shortcut for preinstalled Google Lens right within the app, too.
There's also an option to shoot in 48Mp, though all this is going to really do for you is gobble through your storage, since the results are not any better for the extra pixels.
The Redmi Note 7 supports 1080p video capture at 30- or 60fps with image stabilisation, but 4K and slow-mo video is off limits.
Around the front is a 13Mp AI camera for selfies, and in this mode the app offers quick access to various beauty settings.

Redmi Note 7 Software The Redmi Note 7 runs MIUI 10, which is a custom version of Android 9 Pie. Since we're using a Global ROM model it comes preinstalled with Google services and an English-language keyboard and interface, so setup is as simple as on any Android phone.
You will find Xiaomi offers its own version of most Google apps, which does mean there's some duplication here, and most cannot be deleted (or removed from the app tray-less home screen, though you can tuck them away in a folder where they will remain out of sight and out of mind). This is for good reason, since Chinese ROM MIUI devices don't have those Google apps. Some of these apps are pretty decent, however, so either use them, or don't - there's enough storage that you don't really need to worry about them.
Redmi Note 7 review
We noted earlier that the Redmi Note 7 currently lacks the Dark Mode and Ambient Display found on the Mi 9 family. The software is pretty much the same in other respects, and there are some great extras only found on Xiaomi phones such as Dual Apps and Second Space.
A Split-screen mode is also found in the recents menu, with is accessible either from the onscreen button or by swiping from the bottom of the screen and then pausing before lifting your finger in the gesture-only Full Display mode.
While the notification LED is so pathetic that you're likely to miss it completely, you do get individual app control over which are allowed to display notifications on the lock screen or float at the top of the screen, which means only the most important will be allowed to distract you. Finding your way around the settings may not be immediately obvious, however.
Redmi Note 7 Conclusion Redmi Note 7 is a very decent mid-range phone with a budget price. In the UK budget smartphone market none of its similarly priced rivals (think Mi A2 Lite, Honor 10 Lite, Moto G7 Power) even come close.
In design it's not all that far removed from Xiaomi's flagship, with a similarly large and almost as bright display, but it's not of quite the same quality. In performance most users would not be able to separate Redmi Note 7 and Mi 9 SE, and it's as capable as many phones costing £350.
Compared to the flagship line it adds microSD support and a headphone jack, but loses the wireless charging, in-display fingerprint sensor and NFC for mobile payments. The triple-lens camera is here reduced to a dual-lens model, but still has a huge 48Mp lens headlining.
On paper the capacious 4,000mAh battery looks amazing; in reality you should get a full day's use from it.

Most Popular Smartphones, Wearables, and Amazon Devices on Amazon India in 2019
Amazon is undoubtedly one of the top two e-commerce players in India. The online retail giant sells a large number of tech products in the country. As the year comes closer to an end, Gadgets 360 asked Amazon about the most popular tech products on its online marketplace in India during 2019. Below, we’ll tell you all about the most popular smartphones, wearables, and Amazon devices on the company’s marketplace in India. While some of these tech products were expected, some were fairly surprising.
Most popular smartphones on Amazon India in 2019
Samsung Galaxy M20 Samsung’s Galaxy M20 is a budget smartphone that featured in our list of best smartphones under Rs. 10,000 in November this year. The popular affordable smartphone is priced at Rs. 9,999 for the 3GB RAM, 32GB storage variant in India while the 4GB RAM, 64GB storage variant costs Rs. 10,499.
In our review, the Galaxy M20 managed a score of 8 out of 10. We loved the phone’s sharp, crash display and the great battery life. However, we were a bit disappointed by the phone’s cameras. During testing, the phone did warm up under stress.
Samsung Galaxy M30 Samsung Galaxy M30 is another affordable smartphone in the company’s Galaxy M-series in India. The Galaxy M30 was also a part of our top picks for the best mobile phones under Rs. 10,000 for November this year. Samsung also introduced a 3GB RAM variant of the Galaxy M30.
In our review, Samsung’s Galaxy M30 earned a rating of 8 out of 10. We loved Galaxy M30’s crisp Super AMOLED display and the daylight camera performance. The phone also offers a solid battery life, depending on your usage. We didn’t like the phone’s low-light camera performance while testing it.
Redmi 6A Xiaomi’s Redmi 6A was also a popular smartphone on Amazon India this year. The entry-level smartphone reportedly started receiving the MIUI 11 update in India earlier this year. According to market research firm IDC, Redmi 6A was one of the top-selling phones in India during the first quarter of this year.
When we reviewed the Redmi 6A, we were impressed by its good looks and that the form factor was good enough to easily hold in your hands. Redmi 6A also features an excellent battery life and offers decent overall performance in its price segment. However, we didn’t like the bloatware on the phone and that it served too many ads. We rewarded it with a score of 7 out of 10.
Redmi 7 Xiaomi’s Redmi 7 is another affordable smartphone that was a part of our collection of best smartphones priced below Rs. 10,000 in November this year. Xiaomi started rolling out the MIUI 11 stable update to the Redmi 7 earlier this year that included the October Android security patch.
In our review, the Redmi 7 scored 8 points out of 10. We loved the phone’s overall performance and excellent battery life. We think the Redmi 7 offers a very good value for your money. However, if you’re into low-light photos, the Redmi 7 will disappoint. We’re also not fans of a large number of ads MIUI serves to its users.
Redmi Y3 Xiaomi Redmi Y3 is yet another affordable smartphone that was popular on Amazon’s online marketplace in India this year. Redmi Y3 is powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 632 SoC and features a dual rear camera setup. Redmi Y3 started receiving the MIUI 11 global stable update in India earlier this year, according to some users.
In our review, the Redmi Y3 scored 7 points out of 10. We liked the phone’s design and its good battery life. Redmi Y3 comes with a dedicated microSD slot that is a big plus at this price point. The selfie camera was also quite good. However, we didn’t like the phone’s rear cameras and the overall performance didn’t quite match our expectations either.
Mi A3 Xiaomi’s smartphones were quite popular on Amazon India this year. Another one of them is the Mi A3 that is an affordable smartphone above the Rs. 10,000 price point. Mi A3 is an Android One smartphone powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 665 SoC. The phone features a triple rear camera setup with a 48-megapixel primary camera sensor. On the front, there’s a 32-megapixel selfie camera.
In our review, the Xiaomi Mi A3 scored 8 points out of 10. There was a lot we liked about the phone such as the good cameras, its build quality, excellent battery life, and decent overall performance. But then it had its downsides too, including a slow camera performance (at the time of reviewing), low-resolution display, and the hybrid dual-SIM slot.
OnePlus 7 OnePlus 7 was a part of several online sales on Amazon India this year. No points for guessing why it was so popular this year. OnePlus 7 is powered Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 855 chipset and features a dual rear camera setup with a 48-megapixel primary camera sensor.
When we tested the OnePlus 7, the smartphone managed to score 8 points out of 10 in our review. We loved the phone’s great overall performance, the all-day battery life, and the loud stereo speakers. But we didn’t quite like its below-average low-light camera performance when we tested it. We also didn’t like the inconsistent focus in portrait and macro mode photographs.
OnePlus 7 Pro Just like the OnePlus 7, the OnePlus 7 Pro was also selling at discounted prices several times during promotional sales on Amazon this year. The OnePlus 7 Pro is powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 855 SoC and features a triple rear camera setup with a 48-megapixel primary camera sensor. The smartphone seemed to have done well in the premium segment this year.
In our review, the OnePlus 7 Pro scored 9 points out of 10. There was a lot to like about the phone. From its premium build quality to the great battery life, the OnePlus 7 Pro managed to impress us in several ways. But we did miss wireless charging and hated the fact that it was just too heavy to hold.
Apple iPhone XR Apple has had a good year with the iPhone XR. The iPhone model recently managed to become the top-selling smartphone globally in the third quarter of 2019, according to market research firm Counterpoint Research. The iPhone XR received plenty of discounts and offers during festive season sales this year, making it a decent option for those looking to buy a new iPhone in India.
The iPhone XR scored 9 points out of 10 in our in-depth review. We loved its cameras, great battery life, and the fact that it offered best-in-class performance. However, the display resolution on the iPhone XR is on the lower side. We’d also appreciate if Apple shipped a fast charger with it.
Samsung Galaxy M30s Samsung’s Galaxy M30s is a fairly new entrant in the company’s Galaxy M-series in India. The affordable smartphone featured in our top picks for the best mobile phones available under Rs. 15,000 in November this year.
The Galaxy M30s has a lot going for it other than its price. We liked the phone’s crisp AMOLED display when we tried it out. The Galaxy M30s performs decently well and the cameras take nice photos under daylight conditions. However, we hated the spam-filled notifications and the slow camera focus. The phone scored 8 points out of 10 in our review.
Most popular wearables on Amazon in 2019
Mi Band 4 Xiaomi’s fitness bands have been quite popular on Amazon’s online marketplace. The company’s Mi Smart Band 4 was one of the most popular wearables in India this year. The fitness tracker is priced at Rs. 2,299 and offers a 20-day battery life.
There’s a lot that works in its favor apart from the affordable price tag. The Mi Band 4 has a decent battery life and features a vibrant AMOLED display. When we reviewed the Mi Smart Band 4, we found out that it was pretty accurate while tracking daily activities. But we aren’t huge fans of the proprietary charger.
Samsung Galaxy 42mm Smartwatch The Samsung Galaxy 42mm smartwatch was also popular on Amazon India this year. While iOS users prefer the Apple Watch, Android users prefer to settle for other options. Samsung’s Galaxy Smartwatch packs a lot of interesting features and costs just under Rs. 20,000. The smartwatch was available with deals and offers during festive season sales this week, making it a decent choice for buyers.
Amazfit GTS smartwatch Amazfit has been launching some rather interesting wearables in India lately. The Amazfit GTS smartwatch remained popular on Amazon India since its launch in October this year. The smartwatch is priced at Rs. 9,999 in India and is available in several color options. Amazfit GTS promises a 14-day battery life and 12 sport tracking modes.
Apple Watch Series 5 Surprisingly, the new Apple Watch Series 5 was popular on Amazon’s online marketplace in India in 2019. Apple launched its latest smartwatch this year with an always-on display and several under-the-hood enhancements. The Apple Watch Series 5 price starts at Rs. 40,899 in India.
In our review, the Apple Watch Series 5 did so well that we gave it 9 points out of 10. We loved how useful it was and the excellent display quality. The activity tracking was spot on and the fact that ECG is now available in India as well, makes this smartwatch even more usable. However, battery life suffers with the always-on display.
Most popular Amazon devices in 2019
Echo Dot Echo Dot is Amazon’s entry-level smart speaker powered by Amazon Alexa. The third-generation Echo Dot promises an improved smart speaker system. Amazon also added support for Hindi and Hinglish (a combination of Hindi and English) to Alexa this year. That alone makes Echo speakers a lot more usable. Echo Dot is priced at Rs. 3,499 in India.
Echo Show 5
Amazon’s Echo Show 5 is a smaller, more affordable version of the bigger Echo Show. Echo Show 5 is a smart display powered by Amazon Alexa. You can do everything you can do with a smart speaker, plus you get an interactive touchscreen display as well. You can use it in the kitchen or the living room. Amazon Echo Show 5 costs Rs. 7,599 in India.
Fire TV Stick Amazon’s Fire TV Stick is a popular and cost-effective way to smarten up your dumb big-screen TV. We like it so much that we put it in our list of best auto and video products of 2019. Fire TV Stick is easy to install and use and comes handy when you already have an Amazon Prime subscription in India. It comes with a Bluetooth-powered remote control.
Kindle Paperwhite Kindle Paperwhite is Amazon’s most popular e-reader. If you love reading, you’ve got to try out the Kindle Paperwhite. This model comes with a backlight so you can read in just about any lighting condition. The cheaper, entry-level Kindle reader doesn’t come with a backlight. The latest model is thinner, lighter, and more importantly waterproof.

New Post has been published on https://magzoso.com/tech/redmi-8-review/
Redmi 8 Review
Xiaomi has unleashed a whole pack of new Redmi and Redmi Note smartphones over the past month, as the market shows no signs of slowing down. There has so far been no lack of competition for the Chinese giant, but it has managed to keep up. Buyers don’t seem to mind too much, as they’re getting more for their money than ever before. The Redmi 8 is the latest iteration of one of Xiaomi’s most affordable models, and so it automatically has a huge potential target audience.
With the launch of the Redmi 8, the company has taken a few steps forward in terms of features, while also seeming to regress in one key area – the processor. Does this mark a major shift for Xiaomi and a repositioning of a key product, and does it make sense to allocate more of the budget to other things like cameras and battery capacity? It’s time to review the Redmi 8 and find out.
Redmi 8 design
Like we’ve already seen with the Redmi 8A (Review) and Redmi Note 8 Pro (Review), Xiaomi has given this generation of phones a pretty major design update. There’s a very specific new design language that stands out from the generic iPhone-inspired look of past models. The Redmi 8 also feels extremely high-quality, with loads of attention paid to small details, and no rough edges anywhere. No wonder the company has slapped a “Designed by Xiaomi” label prominently on the back.
The Redmi 8 is available in three colours – Onyx Black, Sapphire Blue, and Ruby Red. Our review unit was the latter, and we love the rich, deep jewel tone which clearly isn’t just a surface-level coating. There are no unnecessary gimmicks here with gradients, patterns, or textures. The back of this phone is glossy but not slippery. It’s surprisingly resilient against fingerprints but you’ll want to use a case to prevent small abrasions and scratches. It’s curved just right at the edges and corners to make usage comfortable.
The two cameras and fingerprint sensor are in a black vertical strip down the middle of the rear. This strip is flush with the rest of the phone, unlike the protruding equivalent on the Redmi Note 8 Pro. The fingerprint sensor is small, but reasonably within reach. The Redmi 8 doesn’t rock from side to side when used flat on a table.
There’s a USB Type-C port, 3.5mm audio socket, and speaker on the bottom
The front of the Redmi 8 is fairly standard – there are thick borders around the 6.22-inch display, and a waterdrop-style notch at the top. The chin is thick enough for a Redmi logo to fit, which we would have preferred not to be there. It’s fairly obvious that Xiaomi has used several common elements across this phone and the lower-priced Redmi 8A, and the two are impossible to distinguish when seen from any angle other than the rear.
Xiaomi surprised us with a USB Type-C port on the entry-level Redmi 8A so of course there’s one here too. It’s joined on the bottom of the phone by a 3.5mm audio socket and single speaker. The power and volume buttons are comfortably positioned on the right, and the tray on the left accepts two Nano-SIMs as well as a microSD card. Unlike its less expensive sibling, the Redmi 8 does have an Infrared emitter on the top, for controlling appliances with.
Overall, the Redmi 8 looks and feels like it’s much more expensive than it really is. It would have been impossible to even imagine this level of finesse for less than Rs. 10,000 a few years ago.
The Redmi 8 is available in three jewel-toned colour options
Redmi 8 specifications and software
While the exterior of this phone is impressive, Xiaomi’s choice of components on the inside raises a few questions. We have the Qualcomm Snapdragon 439 processor, which is a bit of a downgrade compared to the Snapdragon 632 used in the Redmi 7 (Review). Both these processors were launched at the same time last year, so Xiaomi hasn’t even gone with a newer chip that might have been substantially more efficient. Interestingly, this is the same chip that powers the entry-level Redmi 8A (Review) and even the Redmi 7A (Review). It has four ARM Cortex-A53 cores running at up to 1.45GHz and another four at 1.95GHz and integrated Adreno 505 graphics.
There are many more similarities between the Redmi 8 and the Redmi 8A. The two share the same screen specifications — 6.22-inch 720×1520-pixel IPS panels rated to handle 70.8 percent of the NTSC colour gamut. Both phones also have 5000mAh batteries and support 18W charging, and Xiaomi supplies 10W chargers in both models’ retail boxes. Another nice touch is that you can use FM radio without plugging a headset in to act as an antenna.
While the Redmi 8A tops out at 3GB of RAM and 32GB of storage, the Redmi 8 gets that much in its base variant with an option that steps up to 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage. Interestingly, Xiaomi is selling only this variant at a discount as an introductory offer, and it’s what we’re reviewing today. MicroSD cards of up to 512GB are supported. Both phones have 12-megapixel f/1.8 primary rear cameras and 8-megapixel f/2 front cameras, though the Redmi 8 also has a depth sensor on the rear.
You might not be surprised to read that both phones weigh 188g and share identical dimensions. As far as hardware goes, the only differences between these phones seem to be the depth sensor, fingerprint reader, IR emitter, and amounts of RAM and storage you can get with the Redmi 8. Considering the minor price difference between them, this shouldn’t be unexpected, but it does make it hard to see the Redmi 8 as delivering great value.
We have MIUI 10.3.1 based on Android 9, and our review unit was running the August 2019 security patch. MIUI is generally well regarded, but has annoyed us in the past with lots of preinstalled bloatware, ads, and spammy notifications. That hasn’t changed here – we saw UC Browser, Paytm, Amazon Shopping, Facebook, Dailyhunt, Gaana, and Opera Mini in addition to a multitude of Xiaomi’s own apps and quite a few from Google as well. There’s really no point to the choices Xiaomi has made either – no one needs four preinstalled Web browsers.
Several of these apps started throwing up regular advertising notifications after their first use. The good news is that you can uninstall all the third-party ones. Sadly, there are also still ads in Xiaomi’s default apps, and you see pop-up ads when installing anything from the Google Play Store.
At least MIUI looks relatively slick and polished. There are several useful features such app locking, app cloning, a private “second space” profile, navigation gestures and shortcuts, and independent whitelists for restricting apps from using mobile data and Wi-Fi. Google’s Digital Wellbeing is also supported.
The volume and power buttons are on the right
Redmi 8 performance and battery life
We might be a little spoiled after reviewing so many of Xiaomi’s previous phones that have exceeded our expectations that the Redmi 8 falls a little flat. There’s nothing wrong with its performance and it’s definitely good enough for all day-to-day tasks, but it isn’t exciting or new. There are other options available for less than Rs. 8,000 that have stronger processors, including the Realme 3i (Review).
The fingerprint sensor worked fine, but we were warned that face recognition isn’t very secure and can potentially be defeated with a photo of you or by people who look like you. MIUI is easy to use and you can manually disable notifications for many of the problematic apps, or get rid of them entirely, though no one should really have to go through this. As always, the Infrared emitter is a nice touch that many people can get at least some use out of.
The display is good enough for movies and casual social videos. It isn’t especially vivid, but is bright enough to be used just fine even under direct sunlight. Widevine DRM is restricted to L3 so you’ll be streaming videos at lower-than-HD quality, but you might not even notice. The speaker is surprisingly crisp and loud.
Our benchmark tests showed exactly how the Snapdragon 439 stacks up against its competition. We got scores of 95,930 in AnuTuTu and 4,698 in PCMark, as well as 178 and 822 respectively in Geekbench 5’s single-core and multi-core runs. Graphics performance was also on the low side with just 35fps and 14fps in GFXBench’s T-rex and Manhattan 3.1 tests.
As for gaming, you’re better off sticking with simple titles. We were able to run PUBG Mobile, but only at its low settings and that too with a lot of jerkiness. Asphalt 9: Legends also ran, but with some serious lag that made it much less enjoyable than usual. We also found that the back of this phone got quite warm after two or three races.
On the other hand, the battery lasted us comfortably through a full day of heavy usage which involved taking a lot of camera samples, playing these games, and about two hours of video streaming. Our HD video loop test ran for 11 hours, 44 minutes which isn’t great, but isn’t too bad either. We were able to charge up to 25 percent in 30 minutes and 51 percent in an hour using the included 10W power adapter.

Redmi 8 cameras
Cameras are hugely important in a smartphone, and some manufacturers now offer multiple cameras to try to tempt buyers. Xiaomi has stuck with a dual-camera setup, which actually means you get one camera with a depth sensor for portrait effects. However, quality leaves a lot to be desired.
We found the Redmi 8 sometimes took a bit too long to lock onto a subject, and didn’t quite get exposures right when dealing with white subjects or bright backgrounds. At night as well as in portrait mode during the day, we often encountered a deep yellow tone in the viewfinder and in saved shots. We had to point away from our subject or restart the camera app to force it to recalibrate its colour balance.
As for photo quality, things were hit-or-miss during the day. We did capture some crisp shots with good detail, but many times we were also disappointed to see blurred or dull results. We wound up taking several shots of each subject to maximise our chances of getting a good one.
You can get some nice depth-of-field naturally using the camera in its default mode. Portrait mode shots looked botched in the viewfinder, like the phone was simply unable to detect edges, but the saved results were fine. The front camera didn’t capture great detail in selfies.

At night, other than the colour tone issue we described earlier, we found it hard to get usable shots. Details were blotchy and focus was not very sharp. We had to stand very still to avoid causing motion blur. However, there was a fair amount of detail and subjects were well defined with a bit of ambient lighting around. Selfies were unfortunately completely blurry and messy.
Video recording goes up to 1080p 30fps and detail as well as exposure were decent in the daytime as well as at night. Stabilisation is non-existent and you shouldn’t try to move around while shooting.
Verdict
Many Indian smartphone buyers are very conscious of specifications, down to the number and type of SoC CPU cores. This is especially true of young people who upgrade at least once a year and buy devices online – which is a huge swathe of the market. With the Redmi 8, Xiaomi is sidestepping raw performance and focusing on quality-of-life features as well as design. The intention seems to be to establish a firm distinction between the Redmi models and their Redmi Note siblings which are a step or two up the price ladder.
The Redmi 8 is certainly a good-looking phone, and on paper at least the battery, camera, and aesthetics are all highly appealing. You get generous amounts of RAM and storage for the price. Gorilla Glass, 18W fast charging (if you have or buy your own charger), wireless FM radio, USB Type-C, and the IR emitter are all value-adds.
In the real world, we were disappointed with the cameras though. This is something that we think Xiaomi could have done much better at, and unless the issues we faced can be fixed with software updates, some buyers are going to feel let down.
Buyers considering this phone should take a close look at the Redmi 8A (Review) to see if there’s anything they don’t mind losing, since that could save them some money. You might be tempted to act quickly in order to snag the 4GB RAM/ 64GB storage variant at a discount while the introductory offer lasts. However, we’d suggest that people who value performance wait a little while for our upcoming review of the freshly announced Redmi Note 8, which looks like it could deliver a lot more for a relatively small step up in price.
