Beowulf
“The poem Beowulf reveals the culture of the people..” Introduction: Beowulf is the oldest epic poem written in English and is probably the most Important extant Old English literary work. It exists in only one manuscript, the Nowell Codex of the British Library MS Cotton Vitellius.
Although Beowulf is considered the first great English poem, the events are set in what is now Scandinavia. Beowulf and his people, the Geats, are from an area that is now part of Sweden; Hrothgar is king of the Danes. The culture portrayed, however, is the Anglo-Saxon culture using the language brought to Britain beginning with the 5th-century Anglo-Saxon invasions.
One theme of Beowulf involves the preservation of the Anglo-Saxon societal structure. Every society worries that their values and standards will be abandoned and that their social order will die out as a result. An elegiac tone and a mood of longing for the past permeate the epic Beowulf. At the end of the poem, Wiglaf mourns both the death of Beowulf and the potential passing of his tribe, vulnerable to attack because their reputation for cowardice will spread among other tribes after the retainers fail in their vows of loyalty. Anglo-Saxon society was based on the Germanic heroic ideal, the standard of excellence required of a leader, excellence in all that was important to the tribe: hunting, sea-faring, fighting. The leader of each tribal unit, often family units especially in earlier years, gained his position because of his physical strength and capabilities in the activities necessary for survival. The men of the tribe, the thanes or retainers, swore loyalty to the leader and in return he rewarded them with the spoils of their battles and raids. An important part of the Germanic heroic ideal was the king-retainer relationship, a reciprocal relationship which dictated that the thanes should be loyal to their leader and in return the leader would protect them and share the treasures obtained in battle with them. The group bound by this relationship, the comitatus, formed the basis of Anglo-Saxon society. It shows the traditional and cultural themes about the heroic age of Germanic people. It is about a great warrior whose actions are held of aristocratic virtues. The poem shows courtesy shown by men, loyalty of retainers, and thirst of fame and pride of people, nobility and great deeds. It is based upon heroic idealism and fatalism. Though it is written by Anglo-Saxons but the culture depicted in this poem is of Germanic people. Characters of the poem are not Anglo-Saxon but are Germanic.
The culture depicted in the poem The poem Beowulf reveals the following cultural aspects: Patriarchal Significance: Patriarchal system was an important theme in the Anglo-Saxon time which has also been depicted in Beowulf. A person was known fm the line of generations he came from that is his fathers and fore fathers. One must maintain the prestige of the family and the reputation of one’s self. The Spear-Danes in days gone by the kings who ruled them had courage and greatness. … There was Shield Sheafson, scourge of many tribes, a wrecker of mead-benches, rampaging among foes. … A foundling to start with, he would flourish later on … In the end each clan on the outlying coasts beyond the whale-road had to yield to him and begin to pay tribute. That was one good king. (1–11) The poet’s presentation of the ancestor Shield Sheafson as the model of heroism is representative of the poem’s obsession with patriarchal history. Characters are constantly defined in terms of their fathers and ancestors. This passage also emphasizes heroic action itself as a cultural value even a fatherless individual can make a name for himself if he behaves like a hero. Thus, the orphan Shield Sheafson earned an immutable reputation as “one good king” by the end of his life. The great force of reputation will also continue to be an important theme. By establishing fame in his lifetime, an individual can hope to be remembered by subsequent generations the only consolation that death affords. Warrior Culture: A hero in Anglo-Saxon culture had to be strong, brave, intelligent, and humble, but he must at all times keep his sorrows and fears to himself. Heroes couldn’t complain about their problems, or appear weak. Anglo-Saxon warriors had to be stoic, and they had to appear fearless at all times. The Anglo-Saxon Heroic Code was the cornerstone of life for warriors living in the time depicted in the epic poem “Beowulf”. The core values of the Heroic Code can be seen clearly in the poem. Beowulf got ready, donned his war-gear, indifferent to death; his mighty, hand-forged, fine-webbed mail would soon meet with the menace underwater. It would keep the bone-cage of his body safe [His helmet] was of beaten gold, princely headgear hooped and hasped by a weapon-smith who had worked wonders… . (1442–1452) These lines describe Beowulf’s preparation for his battle with Grendel’s mother. The treatment of weaponry and armor is of great importance to the Beowulf poet. These lines seem to imply that the success of a weapon in battle is related to the skill with which it was crafted. The poet pays a great deal of attention, in general, to the craftsmanship that goes into physical objects and feats of language. This passage is also characteristic in its exposition of the idea of fate. The poem is composed with a different set of literary expectations in mind. According to the warrior culture in which the poem is set, part of the meaning of fate is that future events are already contained in the present. To the Beowulf poet, then, it would seem foolish and pointless to try to counteract fate’s powerful presence. Rather, he accepts it and includes it in his narrative. The Heroic Code The Heroic Code was the collective values of the Anglo-Saxon period in English History. Beowulf as both a character and a literary work shows this code in action. The poem and the society it depicts revolved around a warrior king and his band of thanes, who were expected to defend him, even at the cost of their own lives. In return, the king was generous to these followers. Some of the most Anglo-Saxon values, as illustrated by Beowulf, include bravery, truth, honor, loyalty and duty, hospitality and perseverance. Wise sir, do not grieve. It is always better to avenge dear ones than to indulge in mourning. For every one of us, living in this world means waiting for our end. Let whoever can win glory before death. When a warrior is gone, that will be his best and only bulwark. (1384–1389) Beowulf utters this compressed statement of the heroic code after Grendel’s mother kills Aeschere, Hrothgar’s trusted advisor. Although Hrothgar’s grief seems understandable in light of the principle of loyalty that operates in this culture, Beowulf speaks of it as an indulgence” an inappropriate and ineffective way of responding to the death of a comrade. Beowulf’s reminder to Hrothgar that vengeance is the real warrior’s response and the truest sign of love and loyalty reflects a fundamental value of warrior culture, namely an aggressive approach to life. Part of this approach involves the understanding that only reputation will perpetuate a warrior’s existence after death. Beowulf, for example, perceives life as a race to glory. This speech encapsulates the poem’s tension between doom and death, on the one hand, and the necessity of behaving courageously and honorably, on the other. Beowulf’s energetic emphasis on action helps temper the pessimism surrounding the inevitability of death that saturates the poem.
Gift giving customs: Anglo-Saxon period was a time of courtesy and honor. People, kings and queen exchanged gifts among themselves and with other people to maintain their relations. And a young prince must be prudent like that, giving freely while his father lives so that afterwards in age when fighting starts steadfast companions will stand by him and hold the line. Behaviour that’s admired is the path to power among people everywhere. (20-25) Even before we’ve met Beowulf himself, while we’re still hearing about the great kings of the Spear-Danes from the past, the poem mentions a traditional custom of the times, the giving of gifts. In this world, if princes are generous with their wealth and treasures, they’re more likely to have faithful warriors surrounding them. It can be explained by another example: Then Halfdane’s son presented Beowulf with a gold standard as a victory gift, an embroidered banner; also breast-mail and a helmet; and a sword carried high, that was both precious object and token of honor. (1019-1023) Geatish and Danish warriors are constantly giving one another rich gifts of gold and armor. Kings might give these to their “thanes,” or lords, in thanks for their service; thanes might give them to kings in order to bring them honor in glory; warriors steal them from one another in battle. Introducing one’s self: One of the customs of the time was to introduce one’s self whenever new in community. Wulfgar replied, a Wendel chief renowned as a warrior, well known for his wisdom and the temper of his mind: “I will take this message, in accordance with your wish, to our noble king, our dear lord, friend of the Danes, the giver of rings. I will go and ask him about your coming here, then hurry back with whatever reply it pleases him to give.” (348-355) Medieval Scandinavian warriors may have been tough, brutal men who spent most of their time fighting, feasting, and sleeping it off, but they were also very formal and organized. Protocol had to be observed; introductions had to be made in the right way. There are many passages like this in Beowulf scenes where people come and go, introduce themselves to each other, and introduce other people to people they already know, carry messages, and so on. Women contribution in the society: High-class women play a subtle but important role in early medieval culture. A woman has many roles in the society like keeping the peace of the house, grooming their little ones to become warriors one day. Queens on the other hand alongside peace keeping maintained good relations with the community. Wealhtheow came in, Hrothgar’s queen, observing the courtesies. Adorned in her gold, she graciously saluted the men in hall, then handed the cup first to Hrothgar, their homeland’s guardian, urging him to drink deep and enjoy it because he was dear to them. And he drank it down like the warlord he was, with festive cheer. So the Helming woman went on her rounds, queenly and dignified, decked out in rings, offering the goblet to all ranks, treating the household and the assembled troop until it was Beowulf’s turn to take it from her hand. (612-624) As Hrothgar’s queen, Wealhtheow spends her time at the feast circulating, offering a goblet full of mead to each warrior in turn, creating connections between the men and signaling to everyone where they rank in the hierarchy. This is a traditional duty that helps her to fulfill her function as a “peace-weaver,” a lady who uses her rank and position to reinforce alliances between tribes. Poetic clichés: Oral tradition was one of the major contributing aspects of the Anglo-Saxon culture. Bards related the heroic deeds of their warriors which inspired the people greatly and boasted the morale of their warriors. Meanwhile, a thanethe warrior. of the king’s household, a carrier of tales, a traditional singer deeply schooled in the lore of the past, linked a new theme to a strict metre. The man started to recite with skill, rehearsing Beowulf’s triumphs and feats in well-fashioned lines, entwining his words. (866-873) Immediately after Beowulf’s fight with Grendel, the Danish minstrel begins composing a song, using established poetic clichés, about his great deeds. The spontaneous composition of new ballads celebrating local heroes was traditional in medieval Scandinavian culture. The bard probably knows a set series of phrases that fit the meter of his song, and he jumbles them around, adding details of the most recent hero’s activities, in order to sing about “a new theme.” Appreciating customs: Anglo-Saxon people had a custom to appreciate one another’s heroic deeds in order to boast their morale. This appreciation of one another was an important aspect of the Anglo-Saxon culture. This formal boast by Beowulf the Geat pleased the lady well and she went to sit by Hrothgar, regal and arrayed with gold. (639-641) One might get irritated when people around him make boasts, but for Beowulf and the warriors around him, doing so is an important traditional part of their culture it’s the way they tell each other what their qualifications are without passing out resumes. Burial rituals: Anglo-Saxon people had different burial rituals. The place of the burial had an important role in the life of the warrior. Kings and queens were buried with all their treasure at times. “Order my troop to construct a barrow on a headland on the coast, after my pyre has cooled. It will loom on the horizon at Hronesness and be a reminder among my people – so that in coming times crews under sail will call it Beowulf’s Barrow, as they steer ships across the wide and shrouded waters.” (2802-2808) The building of barrows, or huge mounds of earth filled with treasures, is a traditional way for Scandinavian and European tribes in the middle Ages to commemorate great men and women after their deaths. You can think of barrows as a combination of tomb and memorial. Beowulf’s Barrow is going to be built on top of the spot where his funeral pyre burned. Thirst for Revenge: Blood feuds were, sadly, a traditional part of early medieval culture, too. Every time a man from one tribe kills a man from another tribe, it’s possible that the revenge killings will eventually escalate into a full-scale war. “So this bad blood between us and the Swedes, this vicious feud, I am convinced, is bound to revive; they will cross our borders and attack in force when they find out that Beowulf is dead.” (2999-3003) At the end of Beowulf, a Geatish messenger predicts that, with the strong king Beowulf dead, another blood feud will break out between the Geats and their rival tribe, the Swedes. Preserving memories: Then twelve warriors rode around the tomb, chieftain’s sons, champions in battle, all of them distraught, chanting in dirges, mourning his loss as a man and a king. They extolled his heroic nature and exploits; which was the proper thing, for a man should praise a prince whom he holds dear and cherish his memory when that moment comes when he has to be conveyed from his bodily home. (3169-3177) Beowulf’s lords celebrate his life by retelling the stories of his great deeds, a traditional way of mourning and preserving the memory of a great man at the same time. These memoirs were celebrated by the people for centuries and were preserved for the generations next to come to be inspired by their ancestor’s heroic deed throughout their life. These memories were preserved in form of poems which were later sung by bards. Conclusion: Despite numerous cultural and technological advancements, life in modern America continues to bear resemblance to the Anglo-Saxon world. Although it may take time and some loss of pride to admit it, since characteristics of human nature have stayed the same, from work place to personal relationships, the similarities between the two worlds are uncanny. COMITATUS It was an agreement between a lord and his thanes may seem a little strange at first. However, a closer look reveals a striking similarity between that code and today’s work place. A lord or the modern-day boss chooses the best thanes/workers in the land through their experience in battle or a resume of previous employment. The lord/boss provides his thanes/employees with a share of his wealth/salaries. In return, a thane/employee promises to remain loyal to his lord/boss, ready to die in battle or at the office, finishing a project before a deadline. If a battle is won or a deal is closed, an ideal lord/boss, whose greatest characteristic is generosity, will divide the treasure among his thanes, or award a big bonus check to his employees. A violation of this agreement results in the exile/firing of the thane/employee, and a loss of livelihood followed by shame and embarrassment. STANDARD OF GOOD LEADER The Anglo-Saxon standards of a good leader can be further seen in the modern American political process. People tend to favor and vote for candidates who seem to offer the greatest rewards, such as tax cuts or needed legislation. Furthermore, those who support a candidate expect favors in return if that candidate is elected, just as gifts and bribes have become a way of retaining loyalty and trust. PERSONAL RELATIONSHIPS Throughout the poem, similarities between personal relationships then and now are evident. Betrayal within a family, murder caused by jealousy, and marriage for the wrong reasons are all themes in Beowulf, yet a look at today’s soap operas, talk shows, and movies reveals that little has changed. GATHERINGS Forms of entertainment, although highly advanced since the Anglo-Saxon period have retained the same general idea. In Beowulf’s day, a scop would sing and tell stories to entertain those gathered at the hall; today theater, operas, and movies do the same. Modern America is highly youth oriented; consequently, looks, strength, and pride are essential in today’s society. In Beowulf, these qualities carry great importance as well Today we live in a technologically-advanced world filled with sophisticated machinery, yet human nature has remained the same, unchanged since the Anglo-Saxon period. Actions in modern America are parallel to those seen in Beowulf because although times have changed, people have stayed the same. Corruption, greed, and jealousy exist today, as do courage, bravery, and nobility. A struggle between good and evil existed then and will continue to exist for centuries to come. Our greatest challenge, then, is in choosing whether we want to be like Beowulf and Wiglaf, noble and courageous, or like Unferth and Grendel, evil and greedy. Compiled by: Maryam Tariq

How Long Does it Take to Learn German Effectively
If you are wondering how long it takes to learn German, you need to define the question a little before you will get a good answer. Because how long does it take to learn German depends on a couple of factors.
First, you need to define what you mean by learning the German language. For most people, that simply means getting to the point where they have the ability to hold a conversation in German. But for others, it might be preparation for an examination, or acquiring very technically correct written German for business reasons.
Obviously, the answer to how long does it take to learn German is very different for each of those scenarios. In this article, I will deal with learning conversational German, as that is the most common reason for wanting to learn the German language.
Second, how long does it take to learn German can depend significantly on the approach that you take for how to learn the German language!
There are a variety of approaches which you can take, and each has advantages and disadvantages.
You can choose German classes. These typically are weekly, and there more people in the class apart from you. This is probably the approach which will take longest, and it is the least advised approach. Later, I'll discuss important components essential to learn the German language successfully and you will understand why German classes are the least effective approach.
A German tutor is another approach. How long does it take to learn German with a tutor? A tutor is better than German classes, but it is still not the best approach, unless you can afford to have the tutor spend time with you each day. That get's expensive, but it is effective.
And there is a reason why a daily tutor is effective. Two reasons, in fact! The first reason is that you are getting structured daily practice. The second is that the tutor will expose you to complete sentence structure, and help you understand how German sentences are structured. A conversation comprises a group of sentences, not just a group of works. You have to know how to assemble the individual words into properly structured sentences before you get anywhere close.
If you learn the German language with daily practice and early exposure to sentence structure considerations, you have the greatest chance of success. Indeed, you can be conversational in about eight weeks.
While a daily tutor is a great option, it can get very, very expensive. The most efficient option is to use a learn the German language program that simulates full sentence immersion from the start. Not all learn German software incorporates this feature, and if it is lacking you will not be successful!
