“Humour and dark edge” to Murder on the Orient Express
Q:  And very soon we’ll see you in the new MURDER ON THE ORIENT EXPRESS.  Was it Ken Branagh that made you say yes?
WILLEM DAFOE: It’s Ken Branagh as a director before you know Ken Branagh as a director. Now that I know him I’d work with him again in a second.  It’s very good script that honors the original but also has a humor and dark edge to it and could only have come out of our cynical worldview today. It felt new even as it honored the past.  And that incredible cast –
Q: Judi Dench!  Johnny Depp!  Penelope Cruz --
WD: -- with Branagh as the heart of it. A fantastic cast, it’s built for that, a series of ensemble scenes and people step forward for their little aria when interrogated by Kenneth’s Poirot.  That’s basically the structure.
Q: Who do you play?
WD: I’m Gerhard Hardman.
Q: Who is that exactly?
WD: Some names have been changed and some things have been slightly adjusted because partly for political considerations. And the ability of having a broader ethnicity to the cast?  I play an Austrian Professor of Engineering who is on his way to Turin to lecture on the military uses of Bakelite [the plastic].

Hercule Poirot: You know, there is something about a tangle of strangers pressed together for days with nothing in common but the need to go from one place to another and never see each other again.
_____________________________________________
Hercule Poirot: I see evil on this train. A passenger has died.
_____________________________________________
Hector MacQueen: So they got him after all. Hercule Poirot: You assume he was killed. Hector MacQueen: No, no, no. Not that he was… Only that he was in perfectly good health. He had his enemies, that’s all. Hercule Poirot: Indeed, he was murdered. Mary Debenham: Good God, a murder, here. Pilar Estravados: God rest his soul. Mrs. Hubbard: Someone was rummaging around in my cabin in the middle of the night. No one would listen to me. Hercule Poirot: If there was a murder… Princess Dragomiroff: What is going on? Hercule Poirot: Then there was a murderer. The murderer is with us, and everyone one of you is a suspect. Gerhard Hardman: And who are you? Hercule Poirot: My name is Hercule Poirot and I’m probably the greatest detective in the world.

Conversation
Gerhard Hardman: It is out of respect for both that I like to keep them separated. To mix your red wine and your white would be to ruin them both.
- Miss Mary Debenham: [pouring her red wine into her white] I like a good rosé.”
