The Girl Who Kicked The Hornets Nest (2009)
aka Luftslottet Som Sprängdes
Plot: While Lisbeth (Noomi Rapace) recuperates in hospital and awaits trial for three murders, Mikael (Michael Nyqvist) races to uncover the depths of the conspiracy against her - one which might to right to the heart of the secret services.
Review: And so it comes to this; Lisbeth and Mikael going up against a hidden branch of the secret service, responsible for harboring the international criminal (and Lisbeth’s Dad) Zala (Georgi Staykov), and for trying to incarcerate and silence Salander.
It makes for an interesting film, although it doesn’t go into as much depth as the book, and so the payoff is less satisfying. The main parts of the story are all here though; how the authorities abused and attempted to silence Lisbeth, resulting in her strong, anti-authority stance, while Mikael races to uncover the full depth of the hidden group, and deliver the evidence needed to clear her name. The full context of events is never really conveyed, and there are times when Mikael does not come off well because of it, but the film has essentially become a race to the finish.
Despite that, and the rushed nature off its conclusion, the film ends on a satisfying note. Whether we can look forward to a version of The Girl In The Spider’s Web, who can say, but the trilogy we have had is represents the work of Stieg Larsson really well, and made a star of Noomi Rapace (even if Hollywood can’t seem to work out quite what to do with her). Her Lisbeth is undoubtedly the definitive version so far; where Rooney Mara looks and feels like a stylised comic-book character, Rapace feels real and authentic, like a living, breathing person. Nyqvist is very good too, and any attempt made to reunite the pair would be welcome.
Whether that will happen at any point remains to be seen. For now, the Millennium trilogy stands amongst the best Swedish film exports ever, and a thoroughly enjoyable tale.

My best friend is from Greece. His name is Pavlos. Right now he is like a big brother to me. What he does is share his knowledge on common sense and correct male behaviour because this radical feminist movement in the Western countries is influencing men in a very bad way. What I feel good about right now is spreading awareness to what I acquire from Pavlos and spreading it to my friends. Maybe that’s the main thing, sharing is caring. Sharing, in my experience, because I have travelled all around Europe on different projects and Erasmus scouting, is satisfaction. This is when people can actually hear what you are saying and apply that knowledge.

'The Girl Who Played with Fire' Reminds Us Not to Mess with Lisbeth Salander
‘The Girl Who Played with Fire’ Reminds Us Not to Mess with Lisbeth Salander
Studios are always trying to get sequels out quickly, and they hate keeping the audiences in limbo. As for myself, I have developed a lot of patience throughout the years to where if a filmmaker says it’s going to take time to get things right on a sequel, then I should be able to handle the wait. I find this is a much better prospect than having a sequel, or any other movie, rushed into…

The Girl Who Played With Fire (2009)
aka Flickan Som Lekte Med Elden
Plot: Accused of committing several murders, Lisbeth Salander (Noomi Rapace) goes on the run, while Mikael Blomkvist (Michael Nyqvist) tries to clear her name.
Review: Following on from The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, this is the adaptation of the second book in the Millennium trilogy. Taking a different tack from the first, it focuses instead on one of the main characters, and her life.
While the first film bought Lisbeth and Mikael together to investigate a case, the second film focuses on the past of Lisbeth Salander, via a story about a human trafficking ring. A young woman is investigating the criminals, when her boyfriend brings the story to the attention of his elder colleagues at Millenium magazine. However they are both killed, with Lisbeth implicated in the murders; she goes on the run, while both she and Mikael race to clear her name - but the real villains have a personal connection to Lisbeth, and more about her past leaks out.
This actually makes the film weaker, primarily as it splits our protagonists up. It’s been established what a good team they make, and having the two bounce off one another worked well, but without that the film just doesn’t quite match its predecessor. It’s not exactly bad though, and the film zips along quite well, with Lisbeth going into force of nature mode while trying to trace the dots back to the source. It doesn’t quite match the tension levels, even though the case is more personal, and it doesn’t quite capture the books depth (which is always a problem for adaptations anyway.
The Girl Who Played With Fire is essentially the middle part of the story anyway; it progresses established characters, but without the definitive conclusion that most films would carry. To be continued...
