Geoffrey Kamworor Biography
Geoffrey Kipsang Kamworor is a Kenyan long-distance runner who competes in cross country, marathon, and half-marathon races. He was the 2011 World Junior Cross Country Champion. Geoffrey Kamworor's World Records Kipsang won the IAAF World Half Marathon Championships three times in a row from 2014-2018. In the IAAF World Cross Country Championships, he won in 2015 and 2017. He won his first World Marathon Major at the 2017 New York City Marathon. He is the current half-marathon world record holder after winning the Copenhagen Half Marathon with a time of 58:01, on Sunday, 15 September 2019. However, this time is still to be officially ratified by the IAAF. Geoffrey Kamworor Age He is 27 years old. Geoffrey Kamworor Career Geoffrey grew up in the town of Chepkorio in the Rift Valley province of Kenya. He competed for the first time abroad in 2010 when he traveled to Finland and established better track results of 3: 48.15 minutes for 1500 meters and 7: 54.15 minutes for more than 3000 meters. The following year he took the Kenyan cross country circuit and won at the Discovery Kenya Cross Country in Eldoret, defeating Essa Ismail Rashed. In the Kenya Cross Country Championship a month later, he ran in the junior section and finished in fourth, which was enough to win a place in the team for the IAAF World Cross Country Championship 2011. The world competition turned out to be a crucial moment for Kamworor's career, although teammate Isiah Kiplangat Koech was the favourite before the race. The Kenyans received no instructions from the team and Kamworor reacted by taking the lead immediately with a very fast start. He never left the lead and beat the field in the last lap to take the junior world title. A month after his cross-country victory, he entered the Berlin Half Marathon and won in a time of 1:00:38 hours. In June he competed in the circuit of the IAAF Diamond League 2011: he established a better time of 5000 meters from 13: 12.23 minutes in the Adidas Grand Prix in New York, then improved his time from 10,000 meters to 27: 06.35 minutes in the Prefontaine Classic He hit more than half a minute of his best half marathon to win the Lille Half Marathon in September. Kamworor was employed as a pacemaker for the 2011 Berlin Marathon and his work resulted in a new world record for Patrick Makau. In his final exit of the year, he finished the Delhi Half Marathon as a finalist for Lelisa Desisa after a final sprint, although his time of 59:31 minutes made him the seventh fastest in the distance that year. Kamworor marked his entry into the senior cross country rankings with a victory at the International Cross of Italica 2012 in Seville. He was second in the Elgoibar Cross Country behind Paul Tanui the following week. He established a better half marathon at the CPC Loop Den Haag in March, recording a time of 59:26 minutes for fourth place in a high caliber competition. He was enlisted to ride the Rotterdam Marathon and led the runners faster than the world record pace of up to 30 km. He won the 10K Bangalore world title, beating a large field of prominent runners. His marathon debut, not as a pacemaker, occurred in September, where he ran a quick time of 2:06:12 hours to claim third place in the Berlin Marathon 2012. In the 2013 season he ran a series of medium and full marathons. He won the Ras Al Khaimah Half Marathon with a time of 58:54, a new personal record and only two seconds out of the course record. He was the winner of the Bogota Half Marathon in July and was a finalist for Atsedu Tsegay in the Delhi Half Marathon. He placed fourth in the Rotterdam Marathon (2:09:12 hours) and his best performance that year was 2:06:26 hours for the third in the Berlin Marathon 2013. He won the 2017 New York City Marathon with a time of 2:10:53. He beat his Kenyan partner, Wilson Kipsang, who came in second, just three seconds from him. In 2018 he won his third consecutive half-marathon world championship in Valencia at 1:00:02. Also in 2018 Kamworor ranked third in the 2018 New York Marathon with a time of 2:06:26 behind the first and second place of the Ethiopian runners Lelisa Desisa and Shura Kitata. Kamworor won the Copenhagen Half Marathon on September 15, 2019, in a world record time of 58:01. The second place was Bernard Kipkorir at 59:16 and third place went to Berhanu Tsegu with 59:22. New York City Marathon Winner Geoffrey Kamworor won the New York City Marathon with a surge in the final three miles, finishing in 2:08:13 to reclaim his 2017 title. @geoffreykamworor of Kenya crosses the finish line first in the Men's Division of the New York City Marathon on Nov. 5, 2017. Kamworor, who ran the race in 2 hours, 10 minutes, 53 seconds, held off his fellow countryman Wilson Kipsang by three seconds for his first major victory. He and Kipsang embraced just past the finish line to huge cheers.
