Road Trip: Millaa Millaa and beyond
Road Trip: Millaa Millaa and beyond
Geoff and Katrina Englis with three of their children at the MIllaa Millaa Hotel. Picture: Mick Roberts Collection
OUR road trip to north Queensland in September 2020 provided us with the opportunity of visiting the small rural townships of Millaa Millaa, Ravenshoe and Mount Garnet.
While we’ve had the pleasure of visiting the Atherton Tablelands in the past, this time we had the pleasure…

Fukuoka-Beppu
A morning where half our group were optimistic and half were pessimistic about our chances in the rugby. Those of you who know me, know that I am always the pessimist - and never even confident of a victory until we are leading by 20 with 3 minutes to go!
We had about 1.5 hrs drive to Beppu where we visited two of the hot springs - the ocean hell and the blood hell. The ocean water being blue and the blood being red.
The drive was lovely Japanese mountainside scenery.
Then it was onto Oita Stadium for the rugby. From the Carpark’s it was 1,4 km walk to the stadium. The way was lined with lots of volunteers who were chirpy and it was reminiscent of Sydney 2000. Of the RWCs , I have attended , I think this aspect has been the best.
Ran into so many people including Brian Halstead, Serge Gonzalez, Dean Mumm, Geoff and Boatie Travers.
Well of the game itself probably the least said the better . Selection, skill and coaching all left a lot to be desired. However we will always remember that the Australian try was wonderful. I must say the Englis( supporters were not as obnoxious as in Marseille - maybe the more knowledgeable and less drunk one traveled to Japan. However if we have to hear anything more about “sandpaper” , I will scream - they clearly don’t remember their “cheating” with mints!
The organisation at the end of the game left a lot to be desired. They controlled the crowd out of the stadium by closing gates and “ penning” people in holding bays with the result that it took ages for some to get out of the ground thereby holding up the rest of the group.
Despite dramas re availability of food , a few of us enjoyed a few bottles of wine in our own bar at the hotel - relived the game , solved the problem of Australian rugby, planned our activities for the next evening and decided the loss was not as devastating as Marseilles . Our reason being we had expected a win there whereas we hadn’t today.
