Yarrow
Achillea millefolium
Known as: Allheal, angel flower, arrowroot, bloodwort, cammok, carpenter's weed, death flower, devil's mustard, Devil's nettle, eerie, field hops, gearwe, green arrow, herbe militaris, hundred leaved grass, knight's milfoil, noble yarrow, nosebleed plant, plumajilo, seven year's love, snake's grass, soldiers thousand seal., squirrel tail, stanch grass, tansy, thousand-leaf, thousand weed, woundwort, yarrowway & yerw
Related plants: Is a member of the daisy family Asteraceae that consists of over 32,000 known species of flowering plants in over 1,900 genera within it such as chamomile, coneflowers, dahlia, daisy, dandelion, goldenrod, lettuce, marigold, mugwort & sunflower
Parts used: Leaves & flowers
Habitat and Cultivation: This hardy plant is native to temperate regions of the Northern Hemisphere in Asia, Europe & North America
Plant type: Perennial
Region: 3-9
Harvest: Harvest yarrow when the blooms only when they have fully opened. It should be cut right above the leaf node to encourage the plant to potentially flower again. Many choose to harvest the flowers in the late morning when the dew has dried before so that the plant is not stressed by the extreme heat. Hot, dry spells right before bloom seems to be ideal for producing the most fragrant leaves.
Growing tips: Plant in an area that receives full sun to encourage compact growth and many flowers about 1-2 feet apart. In partial sun or shade, yarrow tends to grow leggy. Yarrow performs best in well-drained soil. It thrives in hot, dry conditions; it will not tolerate constantly wet soil. Loamy soil is recommended, but yarrow can also be grown in clay soil as long as it does not always stay saturated with water. While this plant is technically considered invasive only in noncultivated settings, common yarrow still needs to be planted in an area where you don't mind proliferation.
Medicinal information: Yarrow has a history of being used for fever, common cold, hay fever, absence of menstruation, dysentery, diarrhea, loss of appetite, gastrointestinal (GI) tract discomfort, and to induce sweating. Some people chew the fresh leaves to relieve toothache. Yarrow is applied to the skin to stop bleeding from hemorrhoids; for wounds; and as a sitz bath for painful, lower pelvic, cramp-like conditions in women. Some people chew the fresh leaves to relieve toothache.
Cautions: Yarrow is commonly consumed in foods, but yarrow products that contain a chemical called thujone might not be safe because it is poisonous in large doses. Yarrow is not recommended for use during pregnancy or chestfeeding as it causes risks of miscarriage. Yarrow might slow blood clotting. In theory, taking yarrow might increase the risk of bleeding in people with bleeding disorders. In some people, it also might cause skin irritation & is toxic to cats & dogs.

Well I’m just gonna dump some DnD lore and art, finished (ish) and WIP. I’m still new (both to DnD and art but mostly art) and really should be practicing more but hey maybe posting here will give me more motivation eh? Anyway-
Background of the setting: modified Spelljammer, (I’m completely new to the lore anyway so I’m just gonna say everything because idk what’s modified so if I’m acting like I’m repeating common knowledge, that’s why) it’s the Age of Starsail. In the distant past there was a war involving a race called the Forerunners and the Mindflayers. The Forerunners were seemingly wiped out, however there are ancient high tech relics and ruins with still working machinery (this is where Warforged come from). Along with this, there are places that called the Burned Lands. These are essentially magical radiation zones that were created in the ancient war. I’ll skip the rest of it because I just want to show my art aaa
So here’s my character: Errk Gearwing. I don’t have a full body ref, and I’m actually re-designing him now, but this pic has my most complete works:
My boy!
His whole vibe is supposed to be something akin to Warhammer 40k’s Adeptus Mechanicus, with the idea of forgoing his organic self for the Strength and Certainty of Steel.
Fun fact: his arm was the first thing I drew on my iPad, so I kinda went wild trying out brushes.
His backstory is that he was hatched/born into slavery, sent into the Burned Lands to recover particularly valuable artifacts. He was mutated from his exposure, causing the horns and spikes (in reality I wanted something to sorta fill out the space on his head and couldn't draw feathers well, then noticed my attempts looked like spikes and I just rolled with it). At about 15 years old (for the record Aarakocra live a more typical 80-ish year life instead of the shortened 30 years) he was injured in an explosion, but being resourceful, crafty, and happening to be near a med station, he managed to replace them himself. He would later manage to escape, violently slaughtering his masters.
The knife and axe are just ideas for his melee weapons, they don’t have any magical qualities (and every time he gets in melee he gets thrashed so they don’t see much use). The little bars in the middle are for the absorb element spell, being a sort of battery for the stored energy/damage.
In the upper right are a bunch of rune ideas for arcane infusions, self explanatory. The idea is they’re supposed to be able to be done in a single motion.
On the lower right is still unfinished concepts for the tiny Eldritch Cannon. They borrow heavily from the Vulcan from Metal Hellsinger, with the Force Ballista (top) really just being a souped up crossbow. As you can probably tell I didn’t finish the flamethrower.
Onto his now main weapon(s)!
HE CASTS FROM HIS GUN.
INFINITE THANKS TO MY DM FOR NOT ONLY LETTING ME DO THIS, BUT ACTIVELY GAVE ME THE GUN AND TOLD ME I COULD MAKE IT INTO A VERY LITERAL "ARCANE FIREARM." AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA.
Right so specs: the top gun is a mash of a few ideas. In gun terms it’s a lever-action falling block with extra doo-dads. In other words, there's a block that lowers (falls, hence the name) when you work the lever, allowing you to load a single bullet, and when the lever is worked back the block rises back up, sealing the bullet in. Literally stole the action and chamber design from the Martini Henry. It’s cut short because I wanted it on a thigh holster. While it can use typical bullets, the way its used as a spell focus is that Errk can "flash print" a round that would have the effects of whatever spell he's casting.
You might notice that I have a thing for opposing duos. The axe and dagger from the first pic are named ebony and ivory, and here you have this beautifully crafted rifle... and a stubby grenade launcher held together by tape and prayer, and Errk is an atheist. Hell, I have the idea that it might now "shoot" grenades, it just could have a rune of Catapult that just YEETS them. The grenade launcher is mostly just a partial handwave for how a rifle could casting larger AoE spells; it doesn't, in game the two are basically just one item, an arcane firearm to cast from. Shown here are also a few round ideas: bottom left is a Dazzle round, my DM allows me to use the Pyrotechnics spell without needing a fire to make explode, so it works basically like a flashbang, minus the bang. Bottom right is the grenade of fireball, inspired heavily by Fallout's mininukes. Top right is an unfinished idea for shocking grasp, a melee cantrip, where the grenade would be jammed into someone, the little arms pierce them and hold it in, and then it discharges.
One last finished piece:
A quick and simple explanation of gunpowder. Recently the group... "landed" (attacked from orbit by a Nautiloid and escaped in pods that crashed) on a planet in a new system, and the local humans (a species new to us, though there are Elves, Dwarves, and Halflings back home so a bird person is weirder to them than they are to Errk) weren't as advanced as our system. I basically just wanted something that Errk could show to explain the basics of firearms and gunpowder.
Onto the WIPs:
The start of his new design. Originally he was a red tailed hawk, partially because it was a simple color palette and relatively easy to draw, and also because their cry is just really cool. Now, he's gonna be part hawk, and part bearded vulture. For those of you who don't know, 90% of a bearded vulture's diet is B O N E S. Plus, they look absolutely sick (if you find images of them with red rings around the eyes, turns out those are threat displays, so he can basically do the eyes go red meme whenever he wants to).
And my last two pieces:
In the upper left is how he got his name: a set of mechanical wings. Originally, I wanted something done to prevent him from flying, since I heard it can kinda break encounters, especially with a ranged focus caster, but wanted to keep some aspect of them, and worked with my DM to basically give him permanent slowfall. Originally he was gonna have his flight feathers cut during his time as a slave, then I went for having them mangled, and then I decided to just replace them entirely. If you play Warframe, you might see the similarity to the Icarius Syandana, which heavily inspired these wings.
(fun fact: the name came before the mechanical wings. I felt he needed a last name and went to a name generator, "Gearwing" felt perfect. I was gonna explain it as he signed up for an expedition or something, and the dwarf doing the paperwork suggested it).
On the bottom right is my idea for the small sized, self propelled Eldritch Cannon. My DM is a geologist with an interest in paleontology, and she likes to base some of the animals off real world extinct beasts, so I guess that just rubbed off on me (plus bird with spikes and horns already feels like 2 steps from a dinosaur, why not go all the way?)\
Right! That's all I got at the moment. Right now dealing with IRL stuff, barely even been practicing basics, let alone actually trying to draw a full thing. Hope to come back with more soon!

Achilea millefolium; other names in alphabetical order: allheal, angel flower, bad man's plaything, bloodwort, cammock, carpenter's weed, devil's nettle, devil's plaything, dog daisy, gordoloba, green arrow, herbe militaris, hierba de las cortadura, knight's milfoil, milfoil, nosebleed, old man's (the devil's) mustard, old man's pepper, plumajillo, sanguinary, soldier's woundwort, squirrel's tail, stanchgrass, stanchweed, thousand-leaf, thousand weed, woundwort, yarrow.
Wow, what a list of names. Few plants can match it. The scientific name translates from the Greek as “Achilles’ thousand leaf herb.” Achilles was the Trojan War hero whose mother dipped him in a solution that made him immortal. Unfortunately, she held him by the heel and so left that part of his body vulnerable. Wouldn’t you know? In a battle, a spear hit him in the heal and killed him.
When alive, Achilles knew to carry the herb with him in battle to heal the wounds of his soldiers. For centuries, and literally all over the world, humans used the plant for that purpose. Pollen from Yarrow was found, along with other medicinal plant remains, in a 60,000-year-old burial site of neanderthals.
The most common common name, Yarrow, comes from the German “gearwe” meaning “provider” or “healer.
The plant grows in the wild all over the world. Supposedly, it famously grows near the grave of Confucius in Qufu City in what must be a very unique cemetery housing the graves of the philosopher and around 100,000 of his descendants. A Chinese saying holds “where Yarrow grows, one need not fear wild beasts or poisonous plants.” And the I Ching uses Yarrow stalks in its ritual.
Yarrow myth has its good side and bad side. Some say it was the first herb Jesus put in his hand as a child trying to heal his “adoptive” father. And so the plant is called “the herb of St. Joseph” and “carpenter’s weed.”
But witches, too, have always been fond of Yarrow. In the 1616 Scottish trial of Elspeth Reoch, she was charged with being able to predict the future, which she could do by plucking a Yarrow flower and chanting “In nominee Patris, Fiili, et Spiritus Sancti,” which is gaelic for “the father, the son and the holy ghost.” I need to try that sometime. Because of this association, Yarrow is also called “devil’s plaything,” which has a nice ring to it.
Finally, several nesting birds including the starling use Yarrow to line their nests, which has the effect of inhibiting parasites. Smart birds.

Yarrow
Achillea millefolium
A member of the Asteraceae daisy family.
The Navajo historically considered it a "life medicine" and chewed the plant for toothaches and used its infusions for earaches.
In the Middle Ages, yarrow was part of a herbal mixture known as gruit used in the flavoring of beer prior to the use of hops.
The genus name Achillea is derived from mythical Greek character Achilles, who reportedly carried it with his army to treat battle wounds. The specific epithet millefolium as well as the common names milfoil and thousand leaf come from the featherlike leaves which are minutely divided.
The English name yarrow comes from its Saxon (Old English) name gearwe, or certainly, clearly, enough, well. In France, it was called 'herbe de St. Joseph' after a Christian revision of the Achilles story, in which Jesus uses the plant to heal his adoptive father. It has also been called 'carpenter's weed' in this regard.
(Wikipedia)
Place an ounce of Yarrow from a young man’s grace under the pillow of the person you want to fall in love with you. Superstition has it that if a girl tickles her nose with Yarrow and its starts to bleed, then her lover is true to her. More alarming is that Yarrow was used to induce nosebleed by twirling it in the nostrils, as nosebleeds were considered good for curing headache, or a promise of success in love:
“Yarroway, yarroway, bear a white blow
If my love love me, my nose will bleed now”
Yarrow was tied to cradles to protect babies from witches. The fifteenth-century Book of Secrets by Magnus claims that if Yarrow juice is smeared on the hands and then the hands plunged into water, fish will be drawn to you. It was a plant dedicated to Satan and so used in charms and spells. If eaten at a wedding feast then the happy couple would remain together in love for at least seven years. It was also made into snuff. It was the first herb held in the baby Jesus’ hand.

Right, well I’m moving here, at least for a bit, time to yell into the void. Here’s a rant/info-dump about D&D and my apparent naming convention. TL;DR at the end if you just want the punny names without the backstory.
Friend of mine invited me to a dnd campaign, my first ever. I’ve seen/listened to some podcasts and shows, plus played BG3, so I get the gist of how the game works (but also knew to temper expectations, not expecting Matt Mercer performances while I can’t even do voices). While I’ve found I’m kinda bad at roleplay (can’t do voices as I just said, and I feel like my characters’ personalities just end up being me without much extra flavor) and therefore am bad at making joke characters, I’ve found my calling by giving every character a punny name.
So my first character was a dragonborn sorcerer. He was a silver/bronze, primarily silver with bronze accents. The silver is almost white, and he got the name Albion. Swap the o and n and you get the idea. (He never got a proper last name, I just never bothered to give him one. in universe he was a bastard child so ehhh maybe that somehow ties in? He’s prob not coming back to the party)
He got swapped out for my current character, an Aarakocra artificer, because A: our warforged needed a healer (potions don’t work on him), and the party needed an off-healer before the cleric joined, B: the party was more chaotic than it made sense for “relatively chill merchant who’s greatest crime was smuggling and tax evasion” (our Dwarf fighter burned down the orphanage that had their son, who was taken from them due to mental instability after their spouse died, and killed a few dozen people including their son. Their reaction in the backstory is “oops”). ANYWAY BACK ON TOPIC: his whole deal is he’s an escaped slave, where he was originally sent into these places called the Burned Lands, sites of probably an ancient war with magical radiation. This is partially an excuse to just give the guy horns because they look cool as shit. Anyway his wings were… “removed” by his captors to prevent escape. At some point as a child, he got injured in an explosion, losing his arm and eye. However, being pretty resourceful by now (and lucky enough to find some Forerunner equipment, the people who probably did the war), replaced both. So now he’s got a robot arm, arcana eyepatch, and at some point he fashioned a glider pack that might eventually upgrade to a jet pack (originally I basically just didn’t want a ranged character with flight because I know that can break some fights and didn’t want to make my dm focus on that, plus extra angst, but kept the wings in the form of a constant slow-fall). Now he’s basically (supposed to be, if I could roleplay better) a sorta Adeptus Mechanicus type, believing in the strength and certainty of steel.
His name is Errk Gearwing. His last name came to me a while after the first, and I’m canonizing that after escaping he found work and when needing a last name, the dwarf doing paperwork came up with it on the spot.
I have a backup character, another Dragonborn, this one a Paladin. I don’t have much backstory for him yet, haven’t even run him by my DM. Basically, he’s gonna be a H U G E dude, with a STR of *19* (I got some stupid good rolls), but a dex of 8. Think im gonna roll with he’s also got prosthetic arms, but while Errk is both surprisingly practiced in medicine and machinery, this guy’s arms are a lot less precise.
His name is Auris. Again, color theme: gold Dragonborn.
TL;DR: so far my DND characters are
1: a white Dragonborn named Albion (Albino rearranged),
2: a bird artificer that replaced his wings with sci-fi fantasy tech with the last name Gearwing,
3: a gold Dragonborn with the name Auris (Au, Aurum, Latin for gold).
