Been talking a lot about writing tools and sites here because of the news about NaNoWriMo picking up a terrible sponsor! Here's some more! I'm not sure there's any one program/app/site/tool/method that has ever worked for me consistently. I'm just sort of always looking for new tools to add to my collection, I guess. Here's a couple I've used at some point and will probably return to in the future.
750 Words : Recently moved to a 2.0 version. It's geared a little bit towards people that might use this for freewriting or journaling, but I've used it during a few different nanowrimos! 750 words is the number you have to reach for it to give you "full credit" for writing that day and I found that to be a decent chunk of writing without being overwhelming. It's very private, and it has some interesting metrics which can be fun to look at and some badges for achievements, lmao, but is otherwise a very stripped back experience, which can help if you need to avoid distractions. The new website is not as clear about this as the old, but this site does run on a subscription of $5/month or $50/year. (I was grandfathered in on the old version and never had to pay the subscription. Not sure if that will carry over to the new one) You do get a 30 day free trial to try it out though!
StimuWrite: This is a sort of word-processor program you can buy on itch.io. (Well, the base program is name your own price/free and some of the add-ons are like $2. It works on windows, mac, and linux!). It is like the polar opposite of 750 Words in terms of experience. 750 is stripped back and simple. StimuWrite is designed for folks with ADHD or other people whose brains cannot focus unless there is outside stimuli! There are visual themes and background colors to mess with! There's a soundscape! Do you like cafe background noises? They have that! Want to pretend you are writing on a beach? There's ocean noises! Need noises to happen when you type? You can have Ye Olde Typewriter Noises! Or bubbles! Or scribbling noises! Not enough stimuli? You can also have streams of emojis flutter up on the sides as you type! The more you type the more they go! These can all be turned on and off and adjusted to get just the right combo. Plus there are some additional themes and add-ons you can buy. I am partial to the clacky typewriter noises and sparkle emojis. It also functions as a word counter and let's you set a word goal (and will do a big splash of emojis for you when you hit that goal if you set that option lmao) Other than that, it does not have many word program functions, but you can always copy and paste your work into a fancier program to edit and format it. (which you may want to do anyway because it doesn't really have a save or load function, just an export function)

2023 / 01
Aperçu of the Week:
"You only live twice. Once when you are born and once when you look death in the face."
(Ian Fleming's James Bond)
Bad News of the Week:
"The Return of the Reconciler" headlines Der Spiegel, a renowned German political weekly, its article on the inauguration of Brazil's new (and old) President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. He takes office in difficult times. The general conditions are anything but favorable, whether economically, socially or psychologically. Because the country is deeply divided due to the polarizing polemics of his predecessor in office; it is not for nothing that Jair Bolsonaro has been called "Tropical Trump."
It will be difficult for Lula, says political scientist Mauricio Santoro of the University of Rio de Janeiro, among others. Unlike when he first took office in 2003, Lula can now rely neither on a boom in commodity exports nor on a humming Chinese economy. "Today we have a polarized country with an extreme right that is well organized both in the streets and on the net. And we live in a world still suffering the consequences of the pandemic, plus the war in Ukraine and its impact on inflation, food prices and oil."
For this reason, among others, the problem will be that Lula will not be able to fulfill the hopes placed in him. Not in the short term, not in the medium term. But with such negative omens, no one could. What always suffers most in such constellations are projects that are designed for the long term. Because these cost money and effort now, but the result will only be noticeable in the distant future. Or supposedly not at all. At least locally. Like the set of issues that most western people are most concerned about Brazil: environmental protection, stopping the depletion of the Amazon rainforest, preserving biodiversity, protecting indigenous minorities, and so on.
When a Brazilian community has a choice between jobs and personal income from slash-and-burn forest clearing or nothing to eat on the table, but a clear conscience in the face of taking global responsibility, I suspect they know the choice. And can you blame them? After all, you have to be able to afford a clear conscience. In this respect, it will become all the more decisive if humanity still wants to have a chance that precisely this happens: to think globally. If people in Germany only think about protecting the bees in their own village, calming the traffic on their own doorstep and the eco-tariff on their own electricity bill, that won't be enough.
Good News of the Week:
This year, Germany will lead NATO's rapid reaction force. In view of all the negative headlines of recent times, one should really be afraid: the Bundeswehr is running out of ammunition, 18 of 18 modern Puma tanks failed during a training exercise, the troops are blind to the right, the procurement system is not working, and Defense Minister Christine Lamprecht is obviously hopelessly overtaxed by her job in technical, factual and personal terms.
And now Germany, of all countries, is taking over command of the Very High Readiness Joint Task Force in the face of a diffuse threat situation. In the event of a crisis, it is on the front line, responsible for the so-called spearhead, which is supposed to mobilize up to 20,000 soldiers within a few days, and perhaps even has to do so. A nightmare?
No. For two reasons. First, the task suits the quintessential German organizational talent coupled with a cool head. And second, the German military is a parliamentary army geared toward defense. It has no undemocratic claim to omnipotence like the United States. It has no glorification of a bygone past like France. It has not the instrumentalization of geostrategic hubris like Great Britain. It has not wounded vanity like Poland. It has no questionable loyalty to the alliance like Hungary.
Should it actually become necessary for the rapid reaction force to intervene quickly, it will work. Because neither national nor personal egos will play a role, only insight into necessities. The German mindset will neither unnecessarily pour gasoline on a fire nor dither in the face of real challenges. That lets me sleep reasonably soundly.
Personal happy moment of the week:
An apple a day keeps the doctor away. If this were true in digital life, no one in our family would ever be sick. Because we're an Apple family: I bought my first Macintosh in 1988. Had the first MacBook. The first iPod. The first AppleTV. The first iPhone. The first iPad. The first AppleWatch. In the meantime, I can no longer afford to always be up to date - so I'm typing this text on an iPad Pro of the 1st generation, i.e. from 2015, which is ages ago. Nevertheless, my children have been raised to be Apple children with their mother's milk, so to speak. In my younger years, I always gave my old devices to my older daughter first, and then she gave them to my younger son. At some point, this became too "old fashioned" for them in a figurative sense.
First, my daughter put her first self-earned money into various iDevices and is therefore now more up-to-date than I am. And last week my son followed suit and invested his collected "Christmas income". The festive unboxing reminded me of me back in the day. There were new things to discover all day: His own Apple ID. The first scribble with the Apple Pencil. He also made his first phone call afterwards via his AppleWatch - with his grandparents, who ultimately sponsored the whole thing significantly. And Dad's eyes also lit up. Always beautiful. Just like the old days.
I couldn't care less...
...that Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI - also known as "Papa Ratzi" in Germany because of his civil name Joseph Ratzinger - didn't make it into the new year. Firstly, he was allowed to turn a venerable 95 years old, all inclusive with his private staff. Which fits in well with the saying "weeds never die". For all his life he was a hardcore Catholic functionary dropped out of time.
Benedict covered up for pedo-criminals during his bishop days in Munich. In his 20 years at the head of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, he always refused even the slightest progressive development. Refused any German admission of guilt for the Shoa at Auschwitz, of all places. More than once, he has run afoul of his successor, most recently two years ago with a pamphlet in favor of celibacy. He seriously considered himself infallible. It is a pity that we here on earth will never know whether his supreme judge will let him go to heaven or to some place else.
As I write this...
...I am a little stunned. After each year, a balance sheet is drawn up, evaluations are made in every conceivable category, and winners are chosen. In the land of poets and thinkers, of course, this also applies to language. Among other things, the "cliché expression of the year" is chosen. And for 2022, the first place goes to "freedom." I beg your pardon? At this time of all times, this ideal, this noble goal of every democratic society is supposed to be just a cliché?
The official explanation is that "freedom" is not the subject of criticism or even a hollow phrase. But "egoistic misinterpretations" in the media have turned it into that. The term is "degraded by egomaniacs who ruthlessly undermine democratic social structures." In the name of freedom, they "self-righteously and unsolidaristically turn the essential values of a welfare state into the opposite - everything for their own benefit." Aha. If that's the case, we shouldn't take up this beating.
Post Scriptum
After Johann Wolfgang von Goethe in 2020, Marcus Tullius Cicero in 2021 and Sigmund Freud in 2022, this year it is Aristotle whom I have chosen as a "symbolic thinker". The 4th century B.C. Greek polymath is undoubtedly one of history's best-known and most influential philosophers and naturalists. A student of Plato, he either founded or significantly influenced numerous disciplines: philosophy of science, political and natural philosophy, logic, biology, medicine, physics, metaphysics, ethics, the theory of the state, and poetics and poetry theory.
The statue shown is located in Aristotle Park on the east coast of the Greek peninsula of Halkidiki, about 100 km from Thessaloniki. For the first half of 2023, Aristotle holds a newspaper with the headline "Crises everywhere" and wears a peace button on his cape. One is an unfortunately ubiquitous inventory, the other a symbol of hope.

Jesse’s 2022 Game Review
PHowdy folks! With another year on the verge of collapse and the circus tent to be propped up a-new with a new coat of paint, it’s time to talk briefly about videos game. In the past, I made a list of my top 10 favorite games, diluted into my infamous prose heavy stylings. Not this year. Though you cannot force me away with many bars of corvid ownership from the act of getting flowery with dialogue, I’ll at least attempt terseness. Key word: attempt. Also, 5. 5′s a nice number and it’s less painful to write for.
As a quick reminder to all unfamiliar with my reviewing style: these are games that I’ve played this year that have left the largest impact on me. They aren’t games that came out this year (usually) and they aren’t games I played a lot of this year (though if they were, then DRG would be number 1). Usually I favor uniqueness and innovation over most other factors. Every game on this list is a banger and a half and gets my highest recommendation. With that squared away, let us begin.
Runners Up:
There were a LOT of great games that I played and honestly it becomes very difficult to rank games when all of them are just so damn good. So here’s a list of games in no particular order that really blew me away this year, but not enough to make the top 5.
Tropico 6
Satisfactory
Potionomics
Fight Knight
Disco Elysium
Dead Cells
The Forgotten City
5. Grounded
I play games with my boyfriend a lot. Usually, every day, if possible, we’ll sink a couple hours into our favorite multiplayer experiences. So I usually try to find us new experiences to enjoy to go alongside favorite staples. Grounded as a “Honey, I Shrunk the Kids” survival sim oozing with style and at high recommendation from others, was one I knew would be a hit even before we played it. And then we played it. Well, he played it a lot more than I did, but, I still helped out a lot.
Truthfully, Grounded is as much an RPG as a Survival Sim as you gradually update and upgrade your gear to deal with increasing challenge in this tiny world. The combat system is robust, there’s always a new unique challenge ahead of you, and the bugs are as adorable as they are horrifying. I could sleep with the little noises Ladybugs make in this game. If someone has exported all the bug sounds from this game, hit me up.
4. Super Animal Royale
Like I said in the last game choice, my boyfriend and I play together a lot, so we look for fun multiplayer experiences. SAR was his choice, and one he picked up because free is always welcome. And yeah, SAR knocks it out of the park. Not only is the gameplay well balanced and a thrill to fight online in, but it also manages to create one of the rare Free To Play experiences where you really want to pay the devs money just to support their game.
Nothing gameplay-wise is locked behind a fee, everything you would spend real money on is cosmetic. Plus, if you did like cosmetics, it’s super easy to get enough premium currency by playing the game to afford one of their battlepasses. These passes don’t expire too! You can always go back and level older passes if cosmetics in one season stood out more than other ones. If you’re interested in a cute animal top down and haven’t given SAR a try yet, there’s really no better time than now.
3. Ultrakill
I listen to Ultrakill’s OST on and off when I need something higher energy while I work on complicated projects. Similarly, Ultrakill is the most stylish FPS with Quake graphics I’ve played/witnessed. It runs off rule of cool similarly to its direct inspiration - Devil May Cry. And it all plays so damn smooooooooth.
My boyfriend (don’t tire of me talking about him, we do games together A LOT) is considerably better at this game than I am and I feel like I judge some of my opinions over how much he plays a game. At writing, he has P ranked the entire game on all difficulties, and Cyber Grinds (endless mode) for the fun of it. He’s gotten to Wave 25 I think? I’ll need to check with him again sometime. Anyways, he’ll show me how P-2 looks since his ability is on a whole other level.
2. Yakuza 0
I finally dipped my toes into Yakuza this year and HOOOOOOLY SHIT I was unprepared for what would be a hell of an experience. As someone who has played through Kiwami and about a third of Kiami 2 (remakes of the first and second games), 0 is the absolute best way to hook someone on the series. As the title suggests, it’s a prologue introducing the back stories for the two main runners of Kiryu’s ongoing quest to be a positive influence in the lives of orphans and others. And live. An amazing soap opera thriller crime drama that hits incredible heights constantly throughout its running, silly grade-A side stories, a solid difficulty curve, and much much more.
And by starting with 0, you get the amazing build up to go with it. 0′s incredible story helps temper the lows of the Kiwami remake (which is still a good game, don’t get me wrong) so that you can bounce back into the amazing engine update utilized for Kiwami 2. It’s just a good-ass game people.
1. Super Mario Odyssey
If you told me last year that this was going to be my number one game, I’d call you crazy. As someone who doesn’t easily fall in love with AAA games, preferring indie titles, the idea that Super Mario Odyssey would be such a must-play would have been completely dismissed. But no, over so many many other games I played this year, Super Mario Odyssey is the clear superior. SMO runs on high moments, everything has been so well planned out and the world is big without being overwhelming. This. This felt like the natural evolution of what Mario 64 was. And if you’ve been noting how much I’ve gushed over this year for the last month, then it should come to no surprise that it’s here at the top of my list. Everything was planned and perfected with such clear purpose it’s perplexing.
When this game came out alongside A Hat in Time, I felt that Hat would be superior because it controlled in a way that I wished Mario did. With mid-air dive cancels, a really really fun world to explore, a funny story with great characters. It was only this year, three years later, that I found that Odyssey not only did all that, it did it better. (Well, the writing of Hat is better, but...)
Anyways, if you are interested in a Switch, Odyssey is worth getting a Switch for. Though, admittedly, more if you’re the kind of person who adores adventurous open worlds in a collect-a-thon platform setting.
This is what AAA gaming should be. Anything else pales.

Explanation for Sudden Absence
Hello Investors. We have returned from our unplanned break from this blog, and we wish to inform you of why this has happened. We can assure you that this was not planned. If so, we would have definitely made a post about it. So, let us explain why we have been absent for about a month.
It all started on the 25th of October. We were beginning a scheduled maintenance to repair internal damage to the Investor’s Lounge. It was supposed to be standard repairs. However, a remnant of the virus responsible for the Cyberattack earlier this year was unleashed, taking down our systems again. However, this was not the worst of it, as this coincided with two massive breaches, one in the Investor’s Lounge, the other in Maintenance Bay. We will give you more information about the explosions later once we have all of the information… which will be a lot later.
What is known for a fact is that there was not much time to deal with the explosions, as a coalition of the company’s enemies warped in and started attacking us. They quickly seized the two Space Caves, and hacked into our systems, turning our autonomous machines and security systems against us. While some insurgent members were recognizable, whoever was responsible for this attack is unknown to us. What followed was three weeks of grueling fighting, as the militia, for the first time, was called to serve and defend the Corporation, and so was the Legion.
While it may have seemed like were on a stalemate for most of that time, the truth was much different. In the first week, we managed to regain control over most of our electronic systems. The internal security of the Space Caves were still compromised, but we could rescue employees who were stranded on their worlds. During the second week, we managed to take back Maintenance Bay, which was vital for the future of the company. If this did not happen, the company could not continue to persist. There was still the danger of loosing most of our worlds and profits though, so saving them by taking back the Investor’s Lounge was the target of the third week. Eventually, exactly three weeks after we had been boarded, we had managed to defeat the last of the enemy, and won back our workplace.
We wish we could tell you who was behind this. Unfortunately, we cannot. The leaders of this attack were based on Maintenance Bay, and when they saw that defeat was inevitable, they and most of their troops decided to not only kill themselves, but doing so by mutilating them on our industrial plants. Whether that be crushed under hydraulic press, drowning in acid, swimming in molten steel, or any other method of preventing any form of identification. It was indeed a gruesome sight for our men. What matters now though is that their attempts to destroy us failed, and we managed to survive.
Now you may be wondering what is next for the CFC, or why we are publishing this 4 weeks after the incident. Well, simply put, the repairs from this thing will be extensive, and we don’t have the luxury of being able to explain everything in detail. Fortunately, there was already a pretty big lineup of items that we had planned on publishing, so for a few weeks, we will continue like nothing has happened. Once we have some breathing room, we may decide to go ahead and give details on what happened those three weeks. That being said, it may not happen for a couple of months. Give us some time, this is not something we can tell you about immediately.
And with that, we are finished. We should say that for the time being, we expect production to be at an all time low, but hopefully this is temporary and we manage to get production back in gear sooner than later. Moreover, we will be giving our two export logs this week, one tomorrow, and one on Sunday. The former will be for the week before the disaster, and the latter is what could be done during the disaster. Then we should be back on schedule. See you then!

What role do planetary gearboxes play in enhancing the smooth operation and reducing vibration and noise in mechanical systems?
Enhanced Efficiency Planetary gearboxes top in competence, ensuring minimal energy damage during control transmission. The configuration of manifold gears allocates the load across several gear teeth, reducing friction and ornamental general efficiency. This results in less energy waste and better recital. Planetary gearboxes play a vital part in ornamental the flat operation and reducing vibration and noise in mechanical systems through several mechanisms:
1. Multiple Points of Contact: typically have multiple gears engaged simultaneously, distributing the load across several contact points. This helps to minimize localized wear and tear, reducing the likelihood of vibration caused by uneven wear.
2. Uniform Load Distribution: The arrangement of gears in a planetary gearbox ensures that the load is distributed evenly among the gears. As a result, there are fewer pressure fluctuations within the gearbox, leading to smoother operation and reduced vibration.
3. Balanced Gear Design: Planetary gearboxes are designed with balanced gear configurations, which help to counteract any imbalances that may arise during operation. This balanced design minimizes the transmission of vibration throughout the system.
4. High Precision Machining: Modern manufacturing techniques allow for the precise machining of gear teeth, ensuring smooth engagement and minimal backlash. This precision helps to reduce vibration and noise by minimizing sudden impacts or discontinuities in motion.
5. Damping Properties:Some planetary gearboxes incorporate damping mechanisms, such as elastomeric couplings or vibration-absorbing materials, to further reduce vibration and noise transmission. These damping elements absorb and dissipate energy, smoothing out the motion of the gearbox components.
6. Isolation of External Vibrations: In certain applications, planetary gearboxes are mounted on resilient mounts or isolation pads to isolate them from external vibrations. This prevents vibrations from external sources, such as machinery or vehicle engines, from being transmitted through the gearbox and into the rest of the system.
Overall, the combination of load distribution, optimized gear geometry, effective lubrication, and damping mechanisms in planetary gearboxes helps to enhance smooth operation and minimize vibration and noise levels in mechanical systems, making them ideal for applications where quiet and reliable operation is essential.
The modular planning of the planetary gearboxes produced by the Kavitsu Gear Manufacturing is one of their main features. Because of their simple customization and flexibility to specific requests, they are suitable for a diversity of subdivisions. So over the course of about a week, I had extracted the game roms from the various Virtual Console games I had bought on the Wii, 3DS, and Wii U over the years when their online stores were still up. (Well actually, my brother had bought Final Fantasy 1, Circle of the Moon, Minish Cap, Phantom Hourglass, A Link to the Past, and Super Metroid, but whatever. We shared the consoles.)
Now I can do whatever I want with these roms, whether that's using them in an emulator, or putting them on a flashcart or some other rom loader to play them on authentic hardware.
Some of these were easier to get than others. For the Wii U Virtual Console games, I used the Dumpling homebrew application to dump all of the games, and from there, it varied depending on the game. For N64 and DS games, I just had to find the files and rename their extensions. For NES, SNES, and GBA games, I used a program called wiiuvcextractor that converted the proprietary formats they used to more common formats used in emulators (.nes, .sfc, .gba). It was pretty easy to use. And then for the Wii games, I used a program called nfs2iso2nfs to stitch the files together to make an ISO. It was easy enough to use once I knew what I was doing by reading a guide a bit more carefully.
The 3DS Virtual Console games were a bit more complicated to do. I had to go through GodMode9's file explorer to go through the files for each VC game to export the roms. The Game Boy and Game Boy Color games were easy enough to deal with (just had to rename the extensions). The one Game Gear game I had bought, Sonic Triple Trouble, I had to decompress with an application called mdfTools. I don't remember whether or not I just dragged and dropped it or used a command prompt, but it wasn't hard either way. And then there's the one NES game I had on 3DS, The Mysterious Murasame Castle. It was a Famicom Disk System game, and hoo boy, was it quite a doozy. First of all, I had to use a hex editor to copy and paste the actual game data without the filler data to a new file labeled .qd, and then I had to download Python specifically so that I could use a specific Python script so that the .qd file could be converted to a regular ol' .fds file.
It was quite a hassle, and technically, it would probably be the hardest one to do, given that some very basic hex editing shenanigans had to be done, but somehow, I found extracting the roms from the Wii Virtual Console games to be far more infuriating.
After some trial and error trying to extract files from the .wad files I had extracted from my Wii (with mixed results), I had found out about a Python program called vcromclaim, which streamlined the whole process, but I had to provide a NAND dump to use it. So after some more trial and error trying to find a program that could create a proper NAND dump, it took even more fiddling to get it to work because I have a monkey brain, but eventually I was able to get it to work... except I wasn't able to extract the one Neo Geo game I had, The King of Fighters '98, because it used a specific kind of compression. According to the readme on github, I would've needed some Python thing called PyCryptodome installed. I don't know what it did, but if I wanted to get every Virtual Console game I owned, I would need to install it. This took several attempts, but I had to reinstall Python outright because it turns out I didn't install it right the first time, but eventually, I got it to download, and got King of Fighters '98 properly extracted, too. And as an added bonus, I got all of their respective digital manuals as html files, so that's pretty neat.
So I know what you might be wondering after reading all of this, because I've come across the same comment trying to look up guides and tools for this whole process.
"Why go through all of this hassle just for a couple of game roms? Wouldn't it just be easier and faster to just go to [INSERT ROM HOSTING SITE HERE] and download the same games?"
To which I say:
Anybody can go onto the internet and download game roms. I should know. I've done it plenty of times myself. But it was never about the games. It was about wondering if it was possible and seeing if I could do it myself. Life's a journey, not a destination.
