There’s a couple beaches right next to NYC that don’t allow dogs at all during the summer because they have threatened shorebirds nesting there.
As summer is approaching, I’d like to share this bird-friendly beach etiquette reminder. A lot of people let their dogs roam freely on the beach, but dogs that chase wildlife can have a detrimental effect on the animals that have no choice but to share the shoreline with us. Please enjoy the summer with your pets and make sure to give wild animals plenty of space!
#gateway national recreation area#piping plovers#they can't really close the whole beach to visitors#just like#legally speaking#and they can't do much about natural predators#since they don't want to mess with shoreline ecosystems#but they can control pets#it's like one of the few factors they can actually control#so they try to relocate feral cats#and limit dogs during nesting season#i think they make exceptions for service dogs#but they have to be on a leash

U.S. Route 50 in Nevada, stretching approximately 408 miles from the California border near Lake Tahoe to the Utah border near Baker, is famously known as "The Loneliest Road in America." This route traverses diverse landscapes, including the scenic Sierra Nevada mountains, vast desert expanses, and remote mountain ranges. Major cities along the way include Carson City, Fallon, and Ely, each offering unique attractions such as historical sites, the Nevada Northern Railway Museum, and gateways to natural wonders like Great Basin National Park. The road also passes through historic mining towns like Austin and Eureka, preserving 19th-century charm and providing a glimpse into Nevada's rich mining heritage.
Travelers on Route 50 should prepare for minimal traffic, limited cell service, and stretches with few services, underscoring the importance of planning fuel stops and carrying extra supplies. Despite its isolation, the highway offers a wealth of recreational activities, including hiking, camping, off-roading, and stargazing, particularly near landmarks like Sand Mountain Recreation Area and Lehman Caves. Celebrated for its historical significance as part of the Pony Express and Lincoln Highway, Route 50 presents a unique and serene driving experience through some of America's most striking and solitary landscapes.

World Building continued: Backstory for the wars involving Flower Hill, Teikoku, and Usuhan Jiyeog, and subsequent occupations.
Apologies in advance for this being so long. I wanted to know how widespread Japanese weasels are in real life, and found something interesting I could use.
Japanese weasels originate from three areas of Japan, that being Honshu, Kyushu, and Shikoku.
Coincidentally, Japan famously has three Ceremonial Regalia in the form of a sword, magatama beads, and a mirror. These items are not seen by anyone other than the royal family and certain priests (images on the internet are recreations of what they could possibly look like, and those seen in public are symbolic stand-ins), but they symbolize the authority of the royal family.
Which allows me to make a backstory for my AU to help explain the wars and occupations, very loosely based off of events and locations in history, especially since animal biology limits certain events from happening.
In the past, there was an Emperor, who preferred for Teikoku to be in isolation. Under his rule, and of those before him, are smaller prefectures run by princes, lords, or other lessor royal families.
Contact with the United States Alliance and other nations led to a period of aggression and imperialism surrounding the empire of Teikoku, as they strove to fight against a stagnating economy that believed in its own superiority in the world, as well as a strict caste system preventing innovation.
Eventually, after some time, three princes are sent out to conquer the final few neighboring islands, so that may join the empire, and provide a larger force for when they make a move for the peninsula and the mainland.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/74d81b35ccbeec402ded1372de8d8032/3b9662b38d3139e4-9d/s400x600/3c0087362c371b62099ceef17592644df491aed6.webp)
The three princes are named after their prefectures, and the Emperor has given them each one of the Imperial Regalia as proof of their superiority.
The Sword
Honshu is the main island of Japan, and is also known as the dragonfly island. Teikoku will call it Tonbo, which refers to dragonflies, which are fierce and deadly creatures. As such, their Imperial Regalia is the sword, Yūki no ken (the sword of valor), and is based off of Kusanagi-no-Tsurugi (Grass-Cutter). Tonbo is the main physical fighting force of Teikoku.

![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/86270ae933439f97fbfea5401573967a/3b9662b38d3139e4-f2/s540x810/74d105124a39063395cfe065824eb5760d5fdfcd.jpg)
The Magatama Jewels
Kyushu is smaller than Honshu, but it had a lot of trade circuits around the ocean and the mountains. So I will make a prefecture named Kairo (Circuit), and have the area be responsible for trade and roads around the empire, as well as in the fighting forces. I would use the famous Magatama jewels (Benevolence) to symbolize their rule.
The Mirror
Shikoku means four provinces, and is the least populated area of the three areas. Shikoku also has a lot of temples (perhaps run by green pheasants, the national symbol of Japan), which draws in a lot of pilgrims. But they also maintain a lot of gateways to other prefectures. So maybe Genkan for entryway. They are responsible for planning and strategizing for the other two. They can have the Michi no kagami, mirror of the path to represent wisdom/truth, based on the Yata no Kagami.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/114d1bca3102f12566f3126668d184b2/3b9662b38d3139e4-f4/s540x810/751db22b43f5735539a5d7ecb8e07461eb0bc828.webp)
VERY loosely taking inspiration from The Tale of the Heike, a collection of Japanese epic poetry with many translations and retelling (actually written down 200 years after said events supposedly happened), which says that the royal families that held these Regalia were defeated in a naval battle, and threw themselves and the treasures into the sea. Subsequent legends suggest that many search and diving parties have been led to recover the Regalia.
In my AU, I hold that the items were thrown into the sea, with the princes believing that they could return for them later even if they were captured, although they managed to escape. It was a complete disgrace for the Emperor, as without the Ceremonial Regalia, the legitimacy of the entire palace was thrown into question.
And then the box holding the Magatama washed up on the shores of the peninsula.
It is returned as a gesture of good will, but as no good deed goes unpunished, Teikoku believes that they must have taken the other Imperial Regalia for themselves, starting a land invasion. The small army is annihilated by farmers, fresh out of overthrowing their own monarchy, wielding guns, which Teikoku has never seen before.
Which results in a larger army being sent, which is also defeated and the princes captured and possibly executed by the hedgehog army in the north of the country. At this point, without the authority of the Ceremonial Regalia, and increasing economical desperation, the country is forced to undergo a reformation. While there is still an Emperor, he does not hold as much political power as he once did.
Teikoku left behind settlements of soldiers and colonists controlling the southern portion of the peninsula, which they name Usuhan Jiyeog, who take up ruler-ship and fish farming.
The hedgehogs use the proof of their power in defending their areas to take control of what they would name Flower Hill.
It is a strongly held belief that before they backed away from Usuhan Jiyeog, the Emperor promised that anyone who managed to retrieve the Ceremonial Regalia from Flower Hill would be reinstated as the next emperor, and be rewarded with power beyond their wildest dreams.
Did the other two, heavier, items, even wash up on the shores of the peninsula like the jewels, locked in an airtight box? Or did they sink to the bottom, as they were heavier? Who is to say...
But alongside the greed, desperation for power, and food production issues, the temptation of finding the supposedly stolen Imperial Regalia locked away in some distant stronghold is a good enough reason as any to attempt to occupy Flower Hill.
Now, I'm not about to retcon what I have already written and say that Commander Jogjebi wanted the sword and mirror, and Huinjogjebi is a weasel of science who would likely not be interested anyway. But claiming that Flower Hill stole precious items and symbols of their country in the past, and them not being able to disprove it, is enough of an excuse to make quite a few countries in the international courts turn a blind eye to the happenings surrounding Flower Hill.
Oil Production
I did figure out the oil and gas situation. I did go ahead and give the Jindo Empire a large amount of oil. The Venezuela country below the United States Alliance is now the República de Cultivos Oleaginosos, and is trying to prevent the wolves' country from occupying their regions.
Meanwhile, the vast majority of the world's oil in my AU is being produced in this country.
While it used to be many different nations in the past, the leaders understood that their vast oil and gas reserves would result in large scale invasions, and agreed to band together into the Equatorial Allegiance.
#no one in my AU is ending up as the new ruler of Teikoku#Mulmangcho might be a prince in Lily Bell but he is a home grown prince#I'll say that now#this is just supposed to be a footnote in the backstory of the AU#why does it have to be so detailed and complicated me?#I knew some of the legends of grass-cutter from overly sarcastic productions#but I learned about grass-cutter falling into the sea and possibly washing up from usagi yojimbo#sah#SaH#squirrel and hedgehog#lily bell in the thorn thicket#the rod that blocks the lightning#it would be like a normal (not Arthur) person showing up at the PM office with Excalibur or the bone of scone#and claiming to be the new king#I hope mixing and matching legends and such from different countries and time periods is an ok thing to do#I mean no one stopped me from writing 145K words on Korean farming so#There’s a few stories about Kusanagi-no-Tsurugi and Yata no Kagami#Items like them show up in anime a lot but I wasn’t even thinking of it when I wrote this#kind of wanted a whole Yamatai and the sun queen descendants plot line for the giggles#but Yamatai might just be Kyushu

(I love cross-body bags but they always make me look fat in photos.)
Visiting the Transat-winning IMOCA Paprec Arkéa at One Brooklyn Marina!
But wait, where were all of the others? The website said several IMOCA racers had their designated slips here! Fortunately, some members of the Prysmian Group support team were around setting up fenders, so I asked them! It turns out most of the racers found the conditions and facilities at the other Brooklyn marina, Moonbeam Gateway, more suitable and moved there. According to MarineTraffic, Holcim, Maitre Coq, Bureau Vallee, Malizia, and Initiatives Coeur are all at Moonbeam, next to the old Floyd Bennett Field within Gateway National Recreation Area.
I wasn’t able to get there today, but I’m going to try on Sunday when we’re in the area.

Did You Know?
On September 3, 1964, President Lyndon B. Johnson signed the Wilderness Act into law. This law created the National Wilderness Preservation System to protect undeveloped land, "retaining its primeval character and influence" with "outstanding opportunities for solitude or a primitive and unconfined type of recreation." The Wilderness Act remains one of the world's longest standing acts of legislation for wilderness. The Act has been noticed by other countries as a way to protect their own wild places, biodiversity and ecosystems. No small testament to the power of protecting our most wild places not just in the United States but throughout the world.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/eb5542b0d737b18d08f6077f57cfeab1/ff39f8fd77731eca-0e/s540x810/175620cfa22dddf87429bc80600d8d0b200dcd5d.jpg)
Near Pleasant View Ridge Wilderness
It seems to me that if you have thru hiked the Pacific Crest Trail sights and sounds, landmarks and monuments get seen, heard, passed through and in some cases passed over. Section hikers on the other hand may have a similar experience to thru hikers but likely given the nature of sectioning may allow for lingering longer along the way.
Whether or not you are or know a thru hiker or you are or know a section hiker did you know the Pacific Crest Trail passes through fifty wilderness areas (both federal and state). More than any other National Scenic Trail in the United States. From fifteen identified wilderness areas in 1964 to fifty today, sixty years later, the importance of these lands is obvious. Acknowledging and protecting these spaces really hits anyone who has the opportunity to visit and/or pass through. Here are a some that you may have visited or heard about from south to north on the PCT; Hauser, Anza-Borrego, John Muir, Desolation, Marble Mountain, Three Sisters, Goat Rocks, and Pasayten.
Across three states these wilderness areas are a tribute to the importance of protecting large forests and watersheds that together help combat climate change. These spaces not only offer safe refuges for threatened plants and animals but offer a gateway for humans to connect more deeply with nature. Finally, many wilderness areas intersect and envelope indigenous peoples' ancestral lands. Taking into account the treasure these spaces hold as homelands for these native people.
Sixty years on the Wilderness Act is a shining piece of legislation that has evolved over six decades. As time as gone by the protected lands have grown from 9.1 million acres to over 111 million acres. The Pacific Crest Trail has enjoyed a great benefit thanks to the Wilderness Act.
If you didn't know it before, take some time to find out more about the wilderness areas all along the PCT. You can explore them even if it is a day hike. You will not be disappointed. In a these times when we question so many things including the choices our leaders make, we can be proud of the fact that sixty years later we still recognize the importance of wilderness. In this sixtieth year of existence protecting wilderness for generations to come is essential as long as we do not lose sight of why, as a nation, we value these places so deeply.

HAUNT
PREV: DRIFTING
NEXT: PRESENT
words: 1368
warnings: n/a
summary: they drive from monmouth county into hudson. not much is said.
With the February wind jabbing into his skin like an overzealous body piercer, Jax can't remember why he thought this was a good idea.
The free parking, he supposes. It's after Labor Day. He has a vague memory of coming here once as a teenager, piled into a too-small car with a bunch of his dirtbag friends, kicking sand into each others’ faces and daring each other to go to the nude beach. He doubts anyone's on Gunnison now, as he flips his hood up over his ears, wondering uneasily if all the metal is pushing him over the frostbite threshold right now. The sunny drive up to the point seemed perfectly pleasant (but then again, it's hard to account for windchill when you're behind automotive glass), weaving through a maze of skinny roads and empty barracks, some with porches beginning to collapse like old paperback novels peeling apart. Chain link fences everywhere and the vague threat of the Coast Guard, the only real proof of their presence being their signage. A weird amount of deer.
Then when the Tercel could bring them no further, it was time to slog, floundering through what felt like an eternity of a long sandy trail (grains gradually sifting into Jax's boots through the eyelets or whatever the fuck until he felt he stood about a half inch taller, the world's worst shoe lifts). But finally it opened up abruptly into something that evoked the word ‘wasteland’ more than ‘beach’, and Jax had said “Ta-da,” and Jim had said nothing.
“Desolate” is the descriptor that comes to mind, like Utahn salt flats, like Antarctic valleys. Not even a fucking seagull. They stumble over damp sand and exoskeletons and tampon applicators, brutal wind scorching in its coldness, and maybe Jax would be able to appreciate the view of the skyline a bit more if he didn't have such a bad fucking attitude about everything lately. But he's always been the type to suck on a tooth when it's aching.
Jim walks up to the waterline, Jax dogging behind him (couldn't hang back if he tried; attached at the ankle like Peter Pan and his shadow).
The sun is low, real fucking low, because they've still got a ways to go before that spring equinox rolls around and Jax tries not to hate the sun for setting but it doesn't quite work out, and when it casts its hazy orange glow across Jim's cheekbones, slicing into Jim's irises and setting green afire, well that really only makes it worse, in a way.
Jax looks down and sees a dessicated dogfish gazing up at him through cavities. A white thread of foam creeps up to the very edge of Jim's high tops, then flees. It comes crawling back soon enough, though, and blandly Jax thinks, Same.
The waves rustle in his ears. Suddenly, Jax notices the absence of the sun.
Immediately following that revelation, he realizes he can't see the mouth of the trail that had spat them onto the beach, and for one moment, he panics completely, distress spiking so fast that it just freezes his limbs and his gut all at once with the thought, You're fucked and you're going to have to squat overnight in a National Recreation Area– but Jim starts making a beeline for–well, something, presumably the trail and so Jax follows him without question.
–
They make it out of Gateway National Recreation Area alive.
It's just like every other aimless night drive, until it isn't. Until Jim speaks up, slicing blandly through the radio hum, and says, “I got hit by a car here.”
A mile marker sweeps behind them before Jax's brain has a chance to read and log it. “Um,” he says, at a loss. “The car?”
Jim scoffs, suddenly and sharply, like his body spat it out before his brain could intercept it. “There’s only the one.”
Jax swallows, and it feels like there’s a horse chestnut caught in there. Not just because he’s a dumbfuck who can’t ever say the right thing, but because he realizes, sickly, that they’ve passed that spot before. They’ve passed it so many times; has Jim, every goddamn time he drives this road, been reliving the worst night of his fucking life? Has he been going through that every time, not saying a word, letting Jax just exist obliviously next to him? Jax finds himself dissecting his memory of the day, trying to find a trigger, to understand why now, why Jim finally wants to tell him this shit, why he never did before.
“Shit, dude,” he says roughly, because he can't think of anything else, not when the only image in his mind's eye is of blood mixed with crumbled glass. Jim just keeps staring ahead, the dotted lines of reflective paint flickering as they pass, jaw shifting slightly, for what feels like eternity.
“Sorry,” Jim says, finally. “I don’t know why I said that.” At least they're a pair, in that.
–
Later on, Jax can't remember the exact spot Jim told him. He can remember the next mile marker, about how far it was, can guess in the range of a quarter mile, but between the time it took Jim to open his mouth and for Jax’s brain to catch up with the words, it was already out of sight. He’d be lying if he said it wasn't subtly driving him fucking nuts.
The next time they drive past that stretch, Jax tries to be subtle as he sits up a little, brow furrowing, standing at attention like an alert guard dog as he tries to spot it, trying to recognize something he’s never seen in the first place, something that he can’t know, something that he can’t ask. An object catches his eye, something bright and heart-shaped and probably, fuck his life, reading Rest In Peace.
Half of Jax wonders, what an odd coincidence, what is it about this stretch that makes it so accident prone. The other half catches the way Jim’s eyes cut up to the rear-view mirror, just a quick glance, expression blank as he turns his attention back to the road.
In that moment, between plastic flowers and soggy ribbons hanging on by a thread against the wind, Jax realizes that a head-on collision is not a lonesome endeavor. And he thinks, whatever story he’s pieced together about Jim’s crash, the images in his head he’s stitched together from the scraps doled out by strangers and Jim himself, that suddenly there’s another man’s blood dripping onto the road that he never thought about until now.
The really rotten thing, though, is that he can't find any part of himself that gives a shit about that guy. He realizes, a little numbly, that there aren't even any parts that give a shit about the bandmates in the van. When Jax thinks of that crash, lets the nausea pool in his stomach, mental images of blood and bile swirling together in the toilet bowl that is his broken ass mind, there's only one face that ever floats to the surface, and it's the same one he's used to seeing in profile at his left shoulder, eyes trained carefully on the road.
It's lucky that he's never asked Jax to kill anyone for him.
–
Sometimes, Jax’s mind drags up the memory of the short drive back from the tip of the peninsula and pushes it quietly to the forefront of his thoughts. He remembers the near-pitch darkness of land protected from the light pollution of streetlamps. He remembers the narrow, winding roads, criss-crossing unexpectedly, the brief moments of edginess when another driver appears. And he remembers the way that the deer seemed to like to stand right on the very edge of the road to watch you drive past, as if they were ready at any moment to step out into the path of the vehicle, into annihilation. As if they believed, without question, that they would be able to come out the other side.
–
Years later, long after Jim leaves him, Jax will still pass that spot every once in a while. And each time, he will think how someone he loved nearly died there.

Actually no. I'm gonna complain about a few of these.
Gun wall: gross yes. Interesting as an attraction? No. However, it is buried in the midst of Pike Place. And pike place is delightful. The gum wall is approximately 30 feet from one of the best smelling tiny tea shops I've ever been in. Also you can watch grown men throw dead fish at each other at pike place. Fun times. Nice cheese shop over there too.
Voodoo doughnuts: overrated, sure. But yummy all the same.
Route 66: look. If you've got time, and you don't mind the possibility of being stranded, yeah actually route 66 could be pretty fun. It's like one giant ghost town attraction. And the scenery is beautiful (not in your typical meaning of beautiful, but beautiful all the same). I have loved almost all of every time I've driven through Nevada. The real tourist trap in Nevada is Las Vegas. Don't go to Las Vegas, not only is it a horrible attraction, it is literally funded and run by organized crime and designed to take advantage of addicts. Spending any money there supports these.
Grand canyon is gorgeous. It's bigger than you think and the whole national park area is stunning to drive through. If the government ever lets anyone drill for oil or frack there, I will be buying a gun. And you know what isn't great in AZ? The billion gentrified suburban areas with their massive parking lot shopping centers that generate tons of tourist money and consume a billion gallons of water annually. If you're in AZ, go to the Grand canyon. If you're in southern AZ, go gem hunting with someone that knows the area.
Mormon Temple: Look. I'm. It commenting on the religious atmosphere of UT. They have some of the highest rates of body dysmorphia, suicide, homicide, depression, etc. in the country. Bug they did build a pretty cool castle. Gothic architecture. Chefs kiss. But you know what sucks? Pretty much everything in the two square blocks around that castle, it's just a big shopping and tourist trap. But the real hellhole attraction of UT is the salt lake. On its own, the lake is really cool, a fascinating ecosystem. Bug the residents of UT have practically destroyed it (along with pretty much every other single interesting natural attraction in the entire state). UT residents have, perhaps, the single worst track record of caring for their environment of any state in the country.
Texas: as a rule of thumb, there is nothing worth doing in Texas. There is no point to go there. Maybe you should visit the cards against humanity property, possibly the only interesting place there. Even still, it's private land. Just like 90% of the rest of the state. I'll be honest, I've driven from west to east across Texas and everything looked awful. At least the Alamo probably has a museum with a crazy old person giving tours.
Bourbon Street: okay. Look. The architecture is gorgeous. The food in the area is sublime. Is it overcrowded most of the time? Yes. Is there not much else to do? Yes. But the entire rest of the state outside of New Orleans sucks, let them have their one street with nice architecture and cool history.
The Bean: yeah, cloud gateway or whatever the things actual name is is weird. Yes the artist that made it is one of the crankier artists around. But it's actually pretty cool I've you're just visiting. And it's in Chicago, which is a cool city to visit. Walk around some, there's like twenty restaurants right across the street from the bean. Eat some pizza, maybe. I'll be honest, I don't know much about Illinois overall, but I'd say we as a country are sleeping on this state. There's actually a ton of recreation and historical spots, so maybe the bean is the worst but that doesn't mean it's bad. It's just low tier among the rear. (Addendum: I remembered that Great Wolf Lodge is in Illinois, and that wins. The bean is better than great wolf.)
Graceland: I wanna say there are worse places, but that just sounds like the rest of Tennessee. Dollywood, maybe. Don't go to Dollywood. It's not bad, per se, but it is absolutely in the middle of nowhere.
Myrtle Beach: look. Look. Are there beautiful beaches there? Yes. The SC coast has some actual beautiful beaches. Gorgeous and secluded with plenty of actually unhampered tall grass and such. But most of Myrtle is privately owned, the rest is being used for the lamest parties imaginable. That being said, there are significantly worse tourist destinations. Any of the plantation museums, for instance. The Bubba Gump shrimp in Charleston, which should not be as much of a tourist destination as it is. The riverbanks zoo, which isn't bad so much as it is too small to be a real tourist destination. If you're in SC (why tho?) maybe go camping in the Congaree National Park, is beautiful and there's a nice boardwalk trail--it feels like a scaled down redwood forest with all the old growth cypress and ancient pine.
Charlotte Speedway: this is another one of those weird ones. There's interesting history for NASCAR, because it's one of those things people consider way more conservative than it's roots are. As far as the speedway museum itself (maybe I'm confusing this with the hall of fame)? Eh. But it's also in a decent area to walk around and Charlotte as a city is pretty nice aesthetically. You know what sucks in NC, though? Literally every single beach. They aren't cared for, they get hit with hurricane winds constantly, and it's all privately owned. Not to mention they're losing feet of coastline almost every year. You know what else sucks? Carowinds. Very mid tier amusement park with inflated prices and rides they rename every few years so people forget there have been deaths and serious injuries associated with them.
