"Thanks for the advice earlier today," Rocker says as they walk towards the kitchen.
"No problem, Rocker. I know it's hard when you have to deal with someone close to you not meeting SWAT's standards or your standards, for that matter." Deacon smiles at Rocker, takes in how the younger man has filled out Mumford's shoes and tightened up 50-squad. "You'd have found your own way regardless. Your team is lucky to have you."
Rocker wrinkles his nose, as if embarrassed by the praise. "Let me buy you dinner to thank you someday next week."
"For just a few words? Rocker, there's no need."
"Deac, I'm always picking your brain. Let me buy you a drink at least." Rocker smiles and flutters his big, pretty eyes. "Do I need to beg?"
Just like the rest of SWAT, Deacon can't say no to Rocker when he's at his goofiest, so he just sighs and nods. "Alright. One drink."

Deacon isn't expecting Rocker to pick a gastro pub, but the ambience is cozy and chill and the booth they're shown to is comfortably secluded, so they can talk shop without being overheard if they want to. They sit kitty corner to each other so they can talk more easily while keeping an eye on the rest of the diners. Old habits.
Rocker, outside of work, is an interesting conversationalist. He turns out to be an avid reader and art enthusiast, and Deacon is strangely delighted to feel out of his depth now and again when Rocker talks about Rothko or Dostoevsky. But the younger man is deferential when it comes to police work.
"I'm just saying, some days I wonder if it'll be better if you'd been selected as 50-David and I remained 51-David," Rocker is saying over dessert, some Japanese-Italian concoction Rocker persuaded Deacon into trying. They still have half a bottle of wine, though, and Deacon tops up Rocker's glass before his own. Rocker thanks him absently as he takes a sip. "Plus, you clearly have seniority."
"They need younger men at the helm," Deacon says.
"Bullshit. You more than keep up with us."
Perhaps the wine has loosened his inhibitions. Deacon tilts his head and takes in the cut of Rocker's jaw and the generous smile, the crinkles on the outside of the other man's eyes.
Deacon says, "I almost stole some money." He shakes his head and finishes his glass of wine. "A couple stacks of hundreds." His face grows warm from remembered shame. "What kind of leader would I have been if... So that was how I knew I was not fit to be 50-David."
He doesn't want to look up at Rocker. The disdain in place of the admiration that has always been there in Rocker's pretty eyes would sting. He keeps his eyes on the table, at the fork in his hand. The matcha tiramisu suddenly feels too heavy in his stomach.
When Rocker's big hand covers his, Deacon is startled into raising his gaze. Rocker's expression is gentle and full of understanding. "Do you know how much strength it takes to admit something like that?" Rocker smiles at him, and gratitude floods Deacon for the simple fact that Rocker is utterly sincere. Rocker adds, "You had a moment of weakness. It doesn't mean you're not a good leader." He studies Deacon, a slight crease forming between his brows, and then he leans closer. "It makes you human."
Rocker is wearing a really good aftershave or cologne. Deacon feels his throat go tight and he clears it. "What, I didn't seem human before?"
"No! You're handsome, distinguished, calm and collected under fire, and when you're in the ring you're hot as hell," Rocker rattles off the praise with barely a pause. "Gives the rest of us a bit of an inferiority complex, didn't you know?"
Laughing quietly, Deacon shakes his head. "Others, maybe. But you? Come on, you're easily among the top three in the hunk department in SWAT."
Rocker tilts his head. Is he blushing? Must be the wine. "You think so?"
"Yeah, I really do," says Deacon. He covers Rocker's hand with his own this time, squeezing the long fingers. "And now that I know you have such a fascinating range of interests, I'm gonna find time to chat more with you outside of work."
"I'd like that," says Rocker. His eyes are on Deacon's right hand over his left. "I'd like that very much."

Two pubs with more Northern names in Edinburgh, The Doric dates back to the 17th century and markets itself as Edinburgh's oldest gastro pub, while The Hebrides next door always had a rich historic connection withe the Western Isles. I remember back in the 80's and early 90's there was always a Gaelic speaker behind the bar.

The Waiter with No Head
The first time I met the Waiter With No Head, he was serving my group at Russellito's. It was my Uncle's birthday and we were all making merry, but the merriment came to a halt when we realised that the waiter had no head.
As he took our orders, the Waiter With No Head picked up on the awkwardness that had attached itself to the table and addressed the situation.
"I bet you want to know how I became the Waiter With No Head" he said, "but it's not a story I tell strangers."
The rest of the night was a delight. I had steak and ketchup.
It was a smidge under ten years later that I was dining with my girlfriend at Russellito's, which had just been rebranded as 'Wine & Song.' In the few months we'd been together, the Waiter With No Head came up in conversation often and she always disbelieved that I had met such a person. I have to admit, I arranged the dinner partially in hopes that the Waiter still worked there.
I was vindicated when the man serving our table was none other than the Waiter With No Head. My girlfriend's jaw dropped. Noticing her shock, the Waiter sighed, and again went into his well rehearsed spiel.
"I bet you want to know how I became the Waiter With No Head" he said, "but it's not a story I tell strangers."
The rest of the meal was fine. I had eggs and vinegar.
Not long after the second meeting, I was summoned to jury duty. By coincidence, one of my fellow members of the jury was The Waiter with No Head. It was a long and difficult case and we spent weeks debating, eating and socialising in just that small group of jurors. I got to know the Waiter and we became friends.
After the trial, I took my new pal for a drink in a local gastro pub that I often frequent.
After a few rounds, he turned his torso to me.
"I bet you want to know how I became the Waiter with No Head," he said.
"If you're comfortable sharing," I replied, honoured that I was no longer considered a stranger.
He poured the remainder of his pint down his neck hole and moved in close to me, his neck stump just an inch away from my ear.
"I applied for a job as a waiter and got the job."
