The Five Most Common Problems with Gas Boilers
In this post we are going to look at the 6 most common gas boiler problems.
You have no hot water or heat
The boiler drips or leaks
Your boiler makes odd noises
Your pilot light keeps going out
Your boiler keeps losing pressure
There are a lot of benefits to having a gas boiler, it is probably one of the most important systems in the house and when its working we tend not to even think about it. But over time your boiler is going to either under perform or break down all together. At Gas Fast we have been installing boilers for over 14 years and know that while it is possible that the issue you are having with your boiler could be something out of the ordinary, the majority of the time the issue you are having with your boiler is more common.  Some issues you can fix yourself quite easily but others it would be advisable to get a qualified and Gas Safe Registered engineer to fix the issue.
Here are what we have found to be the five most common problem
You Have No Hot Water or Heat
If you are not getting any hot water or heat coming from your radiator then your gas boiler is not doing its job. There are a few potential causes to look out for when this happens:
A diaphragm or airlock is broken
There is a low level of water.
There may be something wrong with the thermostat.
One of the motorised valves has failed.
The first thing to do is to check your thermostat, ensure it hasn’t been turned right down, how embarrassing would that be when the engineer turned up.  Also you can check the boiler pressure to see if that is the problem. If you can’t find the problem or you have aren’t sure how to fix it then your next step would be to contact your local heating engineer to check it our for you.
The Boiler Drips or Leaks
If your boiler is dripping or leaking then that is an obvious sign of a potentially more serious problem, and a problem that you should not be trying to solve yourself, a roll of duct tape will not fix this one.  Leaks and drips are often caused by a broken pressure valve or pump seal, but there could be other reasons, especially if your boiler has been fitted for a number of years. A lot of times the leaks and drips can be repaired but again depending on the age of your boiler it might be more beneficial to have a new boiler installed.
Your Boiler Makes Odd Noises
One of the most noticeable of the boiler problems, is that your boiler will start to make strange noises, such as gurgling or banging. This issue is called kettling which is generally caused by either debris from corrosion or limescale becoming baked onto the inside surfaces of the boilers heat exchanger. Once again this is not something that you should be trying to fix yourself, but provided that the heat exchanger has not become too scaled up or damaged the your local heating engineer should be able to fix it as before depending on the age of your boiler getting a new boiler installed might be more cost effective.
Your Pilot Light Has Gone Out
This fix seems pretty obvious, just relight it. But, before you do relight it you should check the boiler first to see if there is a more serious problem causing the problem.
It could be due to nothing more sinister than a strong draught blowing it out. However the pilot light can also be extinguished by:
A build-up of residue on the light itself
A broken thermocouple, the sensor that is used to measure temperature.
If after following the manufacturer’s instructions on how to relight the pilot light, it doesn’t light or keeps going out then you need to call out your local gas boiler engineer.
You Boiler Has A Loss Of Pressure
If your boiler has lost pressure then this could be an indication of a problem with your central heating system. You might have noticed some of the other issues mentioned here before you see this. To check the pressure of your boiler, simply find the gauge and make sure that it is over 1. If it is not, then this usually means that there is a leak somewhere in your system.
The first thing to do is to check all of the valves on your radiators to make sure that none of them are leaking or dripping. If they are, tighten them up as required.
Alternatively, if you have recently had to bleed your radiators then this could be the cause of low pressure, this can be rectified by topping up the water levels in the filling loop.
If none of the above apply then it’s time to contact a certified engineer as it could mean the pressure relief valve needs replacing or there is another issue with your system.
So there are the 5 most common issues with gas boilers that our team of heating engineers are called out to regularly. If you are having any issues with your gas boiler remember always be safe and only get a qualified and Gas Safe Registered engineer to com and fix your boiler. If you live in the Leeds or Wakefield areas of West Yorkshire and need a heating engineer give us a call on 01977 52027 or visit our Leeds Boiler Installation page for more information.

Gas Boiler Warning Signs
Warning Signs That Your Gas Boiler Is Not Working Efficiently
How can I tell that my boiler is not working efficiently?
Black stains around or on your boiler
The flame burns Yellow rather than Blue
Pilot light keeps going out
Takes a long time to heat up
Carbon Monoxide poisoning
Your boiler is the hub of your central heating system, therefore having a boiler that is both efficient and reliable is essential, in not only keeping your house warm and giving you constant running hot water, but also for the safety of your family. A boiler breaking down is not only inconvenient but it can also be a big expense you could do with out. Having your boiler serviced annually will help to keep it safe and in good working condition, but in between services there are a number of signs that will give you an indication that something is not quite right with your boiler. I have listed some of the signs below, if you spot any of these signs then it would be advisable to get a Gas Safe registered engineer out to repair your boiler and rectify the issues or if required to install a new boiler for you.
Black stains on or around your boiler – If you are starting to get black stains on or around your boiler this is a sign that there could possibly be a leak on or around your flue. Leaking boiler emissions can prove fatal see below for Carbon monoxide poisoning.
Yellow rather than a blue flame – When you look and see the flame inside your boiler it should be burning with a blue flame. If it is burning with a yellow flame, this could be a sign that carbon monoxide is being produce.
Pilot Light Keeps Going Out –  The most common reason for your pilot light to go out, is that the thermocouple needs to be replaced. The thermocouple is a small probe that extends into the flame of the pilot light, and has a small diameter metal wire that runs back to the gas valve.Always get a Gas Safe registered engineer to fix any problems with your boiler.
Takes a long time to heat up – Modern boilers which are working efficiently will heat up and produce hot water almost instantly. If you find that it is taking longer than usual for hot water to come through to your taps, or for your house to get warm Then that should tell you that your boiler needs to be checked over.
Carbon Monoxide Poisoning
Carbon Monoxide is often referred to as the ‘silent killer’ due to it being difficult to detect as it is a colourless and odourless gas.
Low levels of carbon monoxide inside the body can produce flu like symptoms such as nausea, dizziness and headaches, however as the levels increase the symptoms become worse such as increased breathing difficulties and in some case carbon monoxide poisoning can cause death.
As mentioned above there are some signs that you can watch out for that will indicate that your boiler could be producing Carbon Monoxide, however we recommend that you install a carbon monoxide detector as this is the best way to detect raised levels of Carbon Monoxide. They are now widely available and can be tested as part of your annual boiler service.

Gas Central Heating – When To Repair Or Replace Your Boiler
Gas Central Heating – When To Repair Or Replace Your Boiler
If you have gas central heating in your home then at some point you will come upon the dilemma of whether to get your Gas Boiler repaired or to install a new boiler. But how do you know when it is time to change? Obviously if your boiler is still under warranty then there is no issue but below are a few simple guidelines to help you decide.
Safety And Cost Effectiveness
If you boiler is getting on a bit i.e. 10 to 15 years old then you should be considering replacing it. Boilers do last a number of years, especially if you have your boiler serviced regularly. But as with all things the efficiency and the effectiveness of your boiler will deteriorate. Not only causing your boiler to be using more gas and therefore costing you more money, but it could also be releasing carbon monoxide into your home, which you might not know about until it is too late.
Reliability
If you boiler is constantly breaking down, apart from the stress and aggravation that will cause, the cost of getting a Gas Engineer out regularly will very soon mount up, what you save in repair bills will go a long way to covering the cost of a new boiler.
Costly Repairs
As you boiler gets older some of the manufacturers will stop producing the parts for that particular model of boiler, it then becomes more difficult and more expensive to get the parts required, increasing the cost of the boiler repair.
When getting a quote for a repair it would be a good idea to get a quote for a new boiler installation as well, then you can compare the two. As your boiler gets older the cost for repair are going to increase. Wit a new boiler installation finance is available to help you mange the costs.
Future Proof
If you boiler is breaking down now what’s it going to be like next year or the year after and if it is out of warranty then your future repair bills will only get higher, plus the cost of installing a new boiler is likely to increase as well.
Our Ideal and Zanussi boilers come with a 10 year warranty, meaning you have no worries about getting your boiler repaired for the next 10 years. Plus with our finance plans you can spread the cost of your new boiler and need not pay anything up front.
If you boiler is still in warranty or under 10 years old and usually reliable then simply repairing your boiler could be the most cost effective method for you. However if you boiler is over 10 years old, out of warranty, less effective and has any of the warning signs that your boiler is not working safely then its time to invest in a new boiler installation.

Boiler Replacement And Bathroom Renovation
Replacement Of Old Boiler Plus Full Bathroom Renovation Leeds
This month one of our jobs was to replace an old Gas Boiler and also renovate the bathroom for a client in Leeds.
First course of action was to remove the old tired bathroom suite and existing tiles from the walls and the old boiler.
The bathroom was then fully re-plastered, walls and ceiling, and a new bathroom suite with over bath shower and heated towel rail completed the bathroom renovation.
To give the client more storage space in the bathroom we created a small cupboard, which was also used to house the new boiler.
The old boiler was replaced with a new Ideal Logic Plus 30 kw boiler with wireless heating controls.
While replacing the boiler we also changed the filters and gave the central heating system a power flush to remove any debris that will have built up throughout the years the old system has been in place.

How To Bleed Your Radiators
As long as there is no underlying problem and your radiators aren’t faulty then bleeding your radiators is a simple and quick process that you can do yourself without the need to call a plumber or heating engineer out. It is simply opening the valve on the radiator to let the trapped air out.
You can bleed your radiators by following these simple steps:
Check all of your radiators – With your heating on and all of your radiator valves open, feel the top and bottom of each radiator to see if there is any inconsistencies in the heat. If not good move on, if there is then you will need to bleed your radiators. Prior to bleeding have a check to see there is no rust on the radiator or water leaking from the radiator as this would be a more serious problem, when it would be advisable to call one of our central heating and boiler maintenance team to check your system thoroughly.
Once you have checked all of your radiators turn the central heating off and let it cool, this stops you from scalding yourself on the hot water and also inadvertently sucking more air into the system.
Find your radiator bleed key, your central heating installer should have left you one. If you can’t find it don’t worry as they are readily available in any good hardware store and for some radiators you can just use a screwdriver.
If you have more than one radiator to bleed then which one you bleed first depends on the layout of your home and where your boiler is positioned. If you boiler is downstairs then you would start with the upstairs radiators and vice versa if your boiler is upstairs then start with the down stairs ones. Just as a precaution it is always a good idea to lay some old towels at the base of the radiator to catch any drips.
At one end of the top of each radiator you will find the bleed valve. You attach your radiator key to the square bit in the centre, place a dish or something similar at the base of the radiator. Now slowly turn the bleed key anti clockwise for approximately half a turn, you should start to hear a hissing sound as the air starts to escape. Hold you cloth close to prevent any drips or spits going everywhere. Do not remove the bleed screw
Once the air has stopped hissing and you see water starting to trickle out instead you can re-tighten the bleed screw again quickly. Do not over tighten as you may damage the bleed valve.
Repeat steps 5 and 6 for each radiator.
Once you have completed the bleeding of your radiators, you need to check your boilers pressure by having a look at the gauge on it. If the water pressure in your boiler is too low then using the filling loop on your boiler you will have to fill it back up to its working pressure. he filling loop is usually just a small tap or lever on the main water supply to the boiler.
our final test now is to see if you have been successful. Turn your heating on again and have a brew while you wait for the radiators to warm up. Once they have warmed up go around and recheck the top and bottom of them for heat inconsistencies again. If there are still some inconsistencies then some of your radiators might need bleeding again. If after two bleeds the problem is not solved then it would be best to contact one of our central heating and boiler maintenance team

Under Floor Heating Installation Leeds
This is one of our recent jobs in Leeds where we installed under floor heating for the client.
Why Install Underfloor Heating?
One of the main benefits of underfloor heating is the fact that as all of the pipework is under the floor you gain more space as you free up a wall which would have held a radiator. It is also a very efficient way to heat your room as the heat is distributed evenly, in the lower part of the room and and over a larger area,  unlike radiators which heat up the air around them, which then quickly rises to the top of the room.
A Water underfloor heating system is much more complicated to install than an electric underfloor heating system, but it can sit under most types of flooring, such as tile, stone, wood and even carpeted surfaces. With either of the underfloor heating systems there is the obvious upheaval of having to get under your floor to install it. Ideally you would be installing your underfloor heating system either in a new build or if you are already having some work done on your floor.
As a water underfloor heating system distribute the heat a lot more evenly than a radiator the water running through the pipes does not need to be as hot as it would do to heat the room using a radiator. Obviously this makes your boiler more efficient and helps to reduce your fuel bill.
Installing Underfloor Heating Systems
If you are fitting a water underfloor heating system then it should be installed by a professional as it is a much more complex process than simply rolling out the electric underfloor mats which most people who are good at DIY tasks should be able to fit themselves.
Before you begin to have the system works efficiently you would need to ensure that the floor is properly insulated and that there is enough space to accommodate the insulation and the pipes. In some cases you might have to elevate the floor level to get everything in.
