Academy Partners With Mercury Studios to Launch Jonas Gwangwa Music Composition Initiative
Tumblr media
Jonas Gwangwa - South African Jazz Musician and Composer.
LOS ANGELES, CA – The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, in partnership with Mercury Studios, today announced the launch of the Jonas Gwangwa Music Composition Initiative, a one-year career development program for Black British musicians interested in composing music for film.  In celebration of the late South African musician, composer and Oscar® nominee Jonas Gwangwa, the program will provide real-world experience, one-on-one mentorship and networking opportunities, beginning in October 2022.
Part of the Academy’s ongoing Aperture 2025 global outreach and engagement efforts, the Jonas Gwangwa Music Composition Initiative aims to foster broader representation in film music composition, with an emphasis on Black British talent.  Its creation was spearheaded by UK-based Academy members Gary Yershon (Music Branch), Misan Sagay (Writers Branch) and Nainita Desai (Music Branch).
“This initiative seeks to correct an imbalance.  In contrast to the major contributions Black musicians are making to the music industry in the UK, their presence in the UK film industry is significantly lacking,” said Yershon, Sagay and Desai.  “Through this program, we seek to build community amongst Black artists in the UK by highlighting opportunities to bridge film and music careers.”
The program is open to UK-based Black artists and composers with at least three years of work experience as a musician.  Two participants, selected through an application process, will receive access to Academy members across various branches in order to gain an understanding of the filmmaking process; one-on-one mentorship with a member of the Academy’s Music Branch to learn about the practical aspects of composing for film; access to Academy events and screenings in London; and introductions to leading practitioners from all areas of film music, among other mentorship programming.
Participants will be matched with a filmmaker who is in the process of making a short film and will be given the opportunity to compose music for the film. The composition work will be funded by two grants from Universal Music Group’s Mercury Studios, a full-service, global production film and television studio, and Decca Records.  Additional programming and support will be provided by Abbey Road Studios.
Gwangwa, who died in 2021, was a prominent South African jazz musician and composer.  He received Oscar nominations for Original Score and Original Song for his work, with George Fenton, on “Cry Freedom” (1987).
Applications for the Jonas Gwangwa Music Composition Initiative are currently open.  For more information visit https://oscars.org/learn/jonas-gwangwa-initiative.

“We had, obviously had, an enormous amount of fun by lining up lots and lots of actors, who came in and did very brief sessions with me to invent characters to be all those people having their photographs taken. Some of the characters enjoying themselves, others going through pain and suffering.”
Mike Leigh in conversation with composer Gary Yershon, Secrets & Lies (1996) Criterion Collection Blu-ray Edition.

Simon Russell Beale plays Cecil Sharp in Nell Leyshon's play Folk, inspired by his song-collecting in Somerset in the summer of 1903.
Louie Hooper lives with her sister on the Somerset Levels, and knows over 300 folk songs by heart. Cecil Sharp, who is down from London and staying in the village, overhears one of the songs. He immediately recognises its importance and is determined to gather as many songs as he can, before they are lost in the new industrialised and literate world of music halls and ballad sheets.
Cecil Sharp co-founded what is now the English Folk Dance and Song Society and was at the heart of the first folk revival in the early 20th century, collecting around 5000 songs from singers in England and America. The first songs he collected in Somerset formed his thinking.
Folk was originally commissioned by The Hampstead Theatre but is unstaged, as of yet, due to the pandemic

Classical or instrumental music for traveling
Good suggestion! So many soundtracks are great!
Greendale is Where I belong (Extended) - Ludwig Goransson (there’s a few lyrics in this but it’s mainly instrumental)
Prologue Main Theme (Score of Adam Original motion Picture Soundtrack) - Chris Lennertz
Howl’s Moving Castle Theme - Joe Hisaishi
Cas Away (End Credits) - Alan Silvestri
Recuerdos De La Alhambra - Milos Karadaglic
Another Year Opening Credits - Gary Yershon
Reverie - Debussy
Local Hero/Wild Theme - Dire Straights
Stranger on The Shore - Aker Bilk
Opening theme in Brokeback Mountain - Gustavo Santaolalla (this piece is so beautiful and wistful so great for travelling… in fact all the instrumental stuff on this soundtrack is perfect and if you play guitar this is super fun to play)
Pepinot (from Les Choristes)- Bruno Coulais (well worth a watch this film if you haven’t seen it)
The Battle of Kinsale )The Valley of Tears) - James Galway and Phil Coulter
Ave Verum Corpus (Mozart) - The Cathedral Singers
Requiem: Pie Jesu (Faure) - The Choir of Trinity College Cambridge
Cantique de Jean Racine, Op. 11 (Faure) - The Choir of Trinity College Cambridge (this is super beautiful)
I hope you like these ones! It was challenging to think of ones both instrumental and travelling. The Into The Wild Soundtrack has some really interesting tracks on it which are great for a travelling vibe! If you like ‘world’ music, then I super recommend Fatoumata Diawara, Victor Deme, Zoufris Maracas - those are great to listen to when travelling!
Hope you enjoy them! xxx

Divided by a barbed wire fence, Bruno doesn’t understand anything about where Shmuel lives, or who he is. To him, he’s just a new friend – a boy wearing a pair of striped pyjamas. As this unlikely friendship blossoms against the backdrop of the unthinkable events of World War II, Bruno’s childlike curiosity leads this poignant story to a devastating conclusion. We present this heartbreaking adapted from John Boyne’s novel of The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas through dance for the very first time. Choreographed and directed by Daniel de Andrade. Music composed by Gary Yershon based on his score for The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas. Set and costume design by Mark Bailey. Lighting Design by Tim Mitchell. Dramatic Coach Patricia Doyle.

Maxine Peake Joins Mike Leigh's 'Peterloo' (Exclusive)
1:22 AM PDT 7/5/2017 by Alex Ritman
The actress has joined the ensemble cast for the upcoming period drama, backed by Amazon Studios, which is currently shooting.
Maxine Peake – the British stage and screen star whose credits includes The Theory of Everything, Silk and recent acclaimed hard-hitting BBC series Three Girls – has joined the ensemble cast of Mike Leigh’s upcoming period drama Peterloo, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.
The film – which is currently shooting – tells the story of a pivotal moment in U.K. history, when the British army attacked a large group of protestors in Manchester who had gathered to demand parliamentary reform amid a period of severe economic depression. Fifteen people were killed and 400-500 were injured after cavalry charged the crowd with their sabres drawn. The shockwaves were felt across the country, and one of the effects was the creation of The Guardian newspaper (then The Manchester Guardian), which was born out of the immediate crackdown on radicalism.
Peake, from Manchester herself, seems a perfect addition to the cast, having spoken at several events commemorating the Peterloo massacre and long been a campaigner for British working class history. In 2013, as part of the Manchester International Festival, she recited Percy Bysshe Shelley’s poem The Mask of Anarchy, written about Peterloo.
Amazon Studios is backing the project, having come aboard for North American rights in Cannes last year, with other financing from Film4, the BFI and Lipsync. Cornerstone Films is handling international sales.
Leigh – who is remaining tight-lipped on the remaining cast members – is reuniting on his 21st feature film (the follow up to the Oscar contender Mr. Turner) with producer Georgine Lowe, cinematographer Dick Pope, production designer Suzy Davies, costume designer Jacqueline Durran, hair and makeup artist Christine Blundell, editor Jon Gregory and composer Gary Yershon. Gail Egan is exec producing.
Shooting on Peterloo is set to continue until August.
Peake is also set to appear in upcoming films Funny Cow alongside Paddy Considine, and Fanny Lye Deliver’d with Freddie Fox.

Northern Ballet has reimagined John Boyne’s bestselling novel The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas in a heart-breaking new production. The first full-length dance adaptation of this world-famous story, The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas will have its London première at Richmond Theatre on Tues 6 & Wed 7 June 2017.
Telling the story of an unlikely friendship blossoming through the disturbing events of World War II, The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas sees a child’s innocent curiosity lead to a devastating conclusion. Previously adapted for a 2008 film by Miramax, this world-first dance adaptation will be choreographed by Northern Ballet’s Artistic Associate Daniel de Andrade. It will feature an original score by Oscar-nominated composer Gary Yershon, sets and costumes designed by Mark Bailey and lighting by Tim Mitchell, with Dramatic Coach Patricia Doyle completing the creative team.
The original storytelling ballet company, Northern Ballet is renowned for creating bold new work challenging the perceptions of what stories can be told through dance. With its company of exceptional dance actors, Northern Ballet is adept at bringing challenging and provocative stories to life through dance.
Daniel de Andrade says, ‘I was challenged to develop new storytelling techniques which reflect the first-person perspective of the book without shying away from representing the stark reality of the story’s setting. I was very conscious of doing justice to the tension between darkness and innocence in the original, without sanitising the awful events at its heart.’
Author John Boyne comments: ‘Having already seen my novel The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas adapted for film and theatre, I’m excited to see Northern Ballet’s adaptation for dance. As a writer with two left feet, I will watch with fascination and envy the skill, grace and elegance of the performers on stage. I have no doubt that the Company will only enhance my work with their particular talents.’

Mr. Turner (2014)
