Neiman employs a particularly effective metaphor, that of "compounding unearned advantage" to demonstrate how racial and gender advantages amass at an exponential rate, creating more profound inequities over time. This analogy builds on the Racial Equity Institute's framework of "unearned advantage," which "carries less baggage and is less loaded than 'privilege.'" Garrett Neiman: Rich White Men and the Path to Equity
youtube
The people just laying by the side of the road sometimes.....you can't really say their the homeless and there are red skin mascots on coats so people don't help them....or maybe you will end up in bundy's van
Red skin mascots and obsessions with calling people European diseases like schizophrenia when I look like myasthenia gravis after the noise bombs I was called an inferior race
That's the women also....quite frankly it's been like a full riot and I don't want some creepy helter lashing out at me ever again
That's the riverside art museum on showing off her perfect fair stereotypes they have claimed they are her to be here and it's a creepy helter
The princess of 72nd street it's maybe just the neighbors trying to complete their friendships and that happens sometimes
I did have to call EMTs myself in Plano Texas or I can lie there with it
Schiele and Klimt....they maybe are problems related to the recent fires....if you keep supporting a war effort they did things to remove them.....it can appear like all the same anglo population and it's these subtle differences in hurting one another
My genetics teacher said that pharmacological testing only started with cystic fibrosis so to ask someone of my generation if they have insurance is deliberately just stupid....I was proven to pay publicly to develop the drug patent
If they won't stop smiling like musk and wanting to creep around with someone else's purse....she was a heroin stripper she has lots of little fashion bags can go to jail and maybe die for that really distorted my families plain dignity
That's me about Russian scares....trespassing signs or fundamental errors...will study inapplicable genetic drugs off public budgets....that start at 64 million stole pre emptively off a public budget....that's me about why the civil rights institute needs to find it a first priority
Musk on daemons.....to understand the anthropology of the church
I told him I already did social security so I wouldn't be stalked with income modesty in old age......and it's program is intelligent if people think out how much crowding requires populations shift around into differential activity....shelters?....your not actually my friend or people so go finally spend some fun time with your friends
But it's social security it's paying it forward in severe over work to pay so it doesn't hit you with jail or social security when old
People like me did patent that drug in the states....already
If you have to wait till your 62 to learn that lesson that you have a problem maybe no hope for you... a lot of mentals die before drawing it and considering quality of life no one wants to dip into death savings
Derek Tran defends trespassing signs.....regulatory oversight
A trespassing sign is a noose threat
Lawless people
Over sight....the ceiling cameras saint Tom could point out more relevant regulations
Well the four cop rape teams of one criminal queen and we should get to see that
Politics or jobs is just arrogant when you can ask the wealth of life...
Stack the feminine maxi pads on the shelf when the regulatory over sight already sent a memo on the deliberate harm of calling feminine artifacts box and stack
They fire him about the noose....and they could have asked the referee and sued the boss about humans not at promotional consoles but at pos stands

The State of Fashion August 2020: The New Normal with 3D Fashion Shows, Innovations with Online Shopping + Black Designers Take Center Stage
Covid-19 continues to ravage our country and stifle business.
Neiman Marcus at Hudson Yards in New York City waved the white flag a few weeks ago, and Men’s Wearhouse and Tailored Brands are the most recent companies to join the “retail parade [into] bankruptcy court,” as Women’s Wear Daily put it.
What is emerging from the ashes is a more equitable fashion ground, one that we have been asking and agitating for for decades. It seems it took the world to stop–and the Black Lives Matter movement to ignite–for us to analyze all that was wrong in the fashion industry. Now is the time to make it right.
In the wake of the Retail Parade into Bankruptcy, has emerged the Black Parade, a vehicle to empower black creatives on Beyonce.com. Created by Beyonce’s stylist Zerina Akers, the platform generously links to a host of black owned brands (including a few brands available on FashionBombDailyShop.com). Zerina also created an Instagram page called Black.Owned.Everything that upholds the same mission (We have also been doing our part with our Top 100 Black Designers Lists (read parts 1 and 2 here and here)).
Beyonce also used her formidable influence and star power to employ and use black designers in her critically acclaimed Black is King film. Designer Keama Garrett told Fashion Bomb Daily, “There are many black fashion houses that have been lost during the times of struggle. Black people are often the source of “inspiration” but often left out of the presentation. To be apart of making the product is another. We deserve to be apart of the whole design process… This is how we build a black fashion legacy. The time is now!”
The time is definitely ripe, not just for a Black Renaissance, but for a re-imagining of the fashion industry as we once knew it. 3D fashion shows, as witnessed by Hanifa and bridal designer Ese Azenabor, have temporarily eliminated the need for expensive fashion productions with limited seats and little access.

And while retail stores did absolutely nothing to deserve their demise, there is hope that designers can make their profits without brick and mortar enclaves, using social media and e-commerce to bring visibility and new customers to the check out line.
New 5G technology promises to revolutionize how we shop, with tech that brings product catalogues to life through holograms. The stores of the future will be unlike anything we’ve ever seen or imagined.
The fashion world is now our oyster.
The time is now. And we have the power to empower ourselves.

Designer Todd Oldham & Fashion Nirvana
Blog entry by Julia Garrett, Texas Fashion Collection Intern
Stone-faced supermodels typically anchor proper runway shows. But for designer Todd Oldham (born 1961), things were just a little different. With the models beaming and twirling down the runway and the digital prints and crochet textiles they wore so well, Oldham’s kitsch-embracing styles sent hearts swooning from Los Angeles to New York City during his fashion house’s heyday. Todd Oldham Studios produced colorful, vibrant, innovative collections from 1989 to 1998.
Spring 1991
Before this, Oldham started his career a little closer to home, here in Texas. Setting out on his own after high school, Oldham moved from Corpus Christi to Dallas with a borrowed $50-worth of white cotton, which he dyed and sewed into a small line that he sold to Neiman Marcus. Then moving to fashion capital New York City, Oldham gained national recognition, winning the Perry Ellis Award for New Fashion Talent from the Council of Fashion Designers in 1991. The Spring collection that earned him this award was full of bejeweled mosaics on itty-bitty mini dresses and glistening bralettes. His fashion statements fused a love of craft and the vernacular of the everyday with a tradition of bold, avant-garde, luxury design.
Fall 1992 | Fall 1991
Speaking of statement pieces...
Speaking of statement pieces, one of the Oldham brand’s signatures was the use of digitally-printed fabrics. Even in his early career, the designer pioneered this method that came to be increasingly popular in the 90s. Oldham often showcased his digital prints alongside textures with very different visual effects in a single design—like the pearlescent, metal-linked vests over crepe-de-chine slips or gradient velvets found in his Fall 1991 collection.
Spring 1993 | Fall 1993
Knit crochets and polyesters made from digitally-printed polaroid shots were keynotes of his covetable eye for design. By 1992, some of the most desired supermodels of the decade graced Todd Oldham runways, from a fresh-faced 18-year-old Tyra Banks, to others including Cindy Crawford, Kate Moss, Naomi Campbell, and Christy Turlington.
Spring 1994
Todd Oldham’s Spring 1994 collection bounces between print-clad signatures and more thoughtful, sleek pieces that focused on flattering the human figure. Showing this attention to detailed tailoring, whether it was darted side slits for a vest or the fit of a stringy LBD (“little black dress”), Oldham committed to growth and innovation in his designs over time. This collection’s garments showed a new, concurrent interest in minimalism and nodded to 90s trends found in other designers. For example, Oldham created a body-conscious twist on Calvin Klein’s classic slip dress, as well as baby-doll dresses featuring halter necks and stringy, form-revealing silhouettes.

.
Oldham’s career in fashion from then on featured bright, colorful, “more-is-more” designs alternating with minimalist, body-conscious touches. From barely-there two-piece sets to straw mini skirts and cape combos, Oldham’s style matured throughout the decade. The designer became a master of tasteful maximalism in his pairings of full-body prints with black, satin, cropped blazers and embroidered straps on slip dresses. Evidence of Oldham’s colorful, eclectic design aesthetic and use of digitally-printed textiles can be seen in the McNay’s Fashion Nirvana: Runway to Everyday exhibition. All loaned from the Texas Fashion Collection (TFC), a coat printed with a picture of paper shreds joins the “Less Is More & More Is More” section, while a colorful shirtwaist dress and landscape-photography-clad t-shirt dress can be found in the “Culture & Subculture” section.

.
After Oldham closed his fashion house in 1999, he went on to work in interior design, author several books, and other creative ventures. Oldham has a history of showcasing his multidisciplinary artistic talents. Many may remember Oldham’s “Todd Time” segments on MTV’s House of Style program, in which the designer shared DIY projects, helpful life hacks, and creative yet affordable fashion advice. Although Todd Oldham has moved on to other horizons, there are plenty of opportunities to dream about what could’ve joined your vintage closet on view at the McNay Art Museum.

Spring 1996 | Spring 1994
Upon closing his fashion business in 1999, Oldham donated 118 garments from his archive to the Texas Fashion Collection, also known as the TFC, at the University of North Texas (Denton, TX). Thanks to a partnership with the TFC, numerous signature examples of what made Oldham so distinctly successful will be on view at the McNay for the coming months. A silk ribbon gown, a satin coat, a pinstripe dress, and more grace this exhibition’s slice of fashion history from the 1990s, calling to the minimal-maximalist in all of us.

The TFC, located in Denton, TX, houses over 20,000 historic and designer garments and accessories and is directed by Annette Becker. Fashion Nirvana: Runway to Everyday is an exhibition organized by the McNay Art Museum in partnership with the TFC. Fashion Nirvana is the first fashion and video art exhibition in the Museum’s history, and focuses on the style and culture of the 1990s. Marion McNay Koogler founded the McNay Art Museum as the first modern art museum in Texas in 1954, and the public collection now holds over 22,000 objects.

#WhitePrivilege
Peggy McIntosh started the conversation 30 years ago regarding white privilege. Peggy’s article broke down the minor injustices that someone with privilege may overlook. While researching the hashtag #whiteprivilege I’ve noticed a trend. The hashtag is being used in many different ways to make a point. For example, there are people who are trying to disprove that white privilege exists. They post things like:
(Unknown)
They either talk about how their life is hard and they struggled as well. Someone even went as far to use the holocaust as a reason. Through my research, I think I figured out another layer that causes confusion for those who don’t believe in white privilege. I think people confuse class and race. Racism isn’t caused by poverty. It’s not like a person of color becomes rich and all of the racism they experience goes away.
https://www.bostonglobe.com/opinion/2019/04/03/admissions-scandal-highlights-return-white-privilege/UupRBwH9r4qaregWDK5CxL/story.html
One discussion that is hot right now is the college admission scandal. There is a great article about the scandal, from the Boston globe, that addresses white privilege and class. I think the article makes a profound distinction when it describes white privilege as a return on efforts. If you are white, you get a premium on your efforts or a discount on your missteps. The wealth gap truly illustrates how the deck is already stacked against people of color. If rich white families are using their wealth to gain an edge, then people of color can’t even compete. It closes the discussion with this great statement “To undo the Return on White Privilege, white Americans must do the opposite of what these rich white parents did. Instead of leveraging our power to further stack the deck, we must de-rig the system. We must redefine racism as believing racial disparities are justified for any reason.” (Neiman)
http://whiteprivilege2.com/
The last #whiteprivilege post I wanted to discuss was regarding Macklemore’s song “White Privilege II.” I found an article that addressed the hype around his song. There was a lot of love and hate for this song. People complained that people were only listening to the message because it was a rich white guy telling it. From my perspective, what people are failing to see is this is Macklemore’s ode to hiphop. He is promising to always show appreciation for the art he gets to participate in, by always showing up for black lives. He is making a commitment. I appreciate that he is trying to clarify what “Black lives matter” means. The song has a great description “Black Lives Matter, to use an analogy, is like if there was a subdivision and a house was on fire, the fire department wouldn’t show up and start putting water on all the houses because All Houses Matter. They would show up, and they would turn their water on the house that was burning because that’s the house that needs help the most.” (Cunningham) Regardless of who is spreading the message, I am listening.

MIND Blog Rewind: December 2019
Each month on the MIND blog, we share stories of how our organization, our partners, and educators across the country are advancing the mission to mathematically equip all students to solve the world’s most challenging problems. We also share resources for educators and students, and cover some of the exciting events we take part in across the country.
Welcome to the MIND Blog Rewind! December is coming to a close and along with it, 2019. I don't know about you, but I'm ready for the roaring 20's. Let's kick off the new year with gratitude and celebration for what we achieved together. Here is a recap of important news, content, and resources that came out of MIND and our community in December 2019.
Winter break is here but learning never stops! With your help, ST Math is reaching more students than ever. We are so thankful to our partners, donors, and ST Math champions for being a critical part of MIND's mission. We shared our annual digital holiday card and rounded up our favorite ways to celebrate the holidays with the Winter Break Challenge, holiday coloring sheets, and winter STEAM activities.
We may be at the end of the year, but how did we get here? We kicked off the holiday season with a gratitude tree in our Irvine office. Colleagues throughout the organization were encouraged to take a moment and reflect on what they were thankful for. I was excited to hear what my MIND family held in their hearts, but with how busy everyone was, I wasn't sure what would happen. Our gratitude tree bloomed in the most incredible way with the love and care of everyone.
What's wrong with memorizing? Jo Garrett, CFO at MIND, answered this question and shared her own experiences on the way children are being taught math today. Parents are a core part of student learning ecosystems and embracing the way that your child is learning math is a great way to support them.
What is spatial-temporal reasoning? How exactly does it work? Research shows that a visual approach to conveying math concepts can be highly effective. Ki Karou, Director of Product, ST Math, shared the science of spatial-temporal reasoning and how we can use spatial-temporal methods to teach mathematics.
Our website is chock full of great resources for parents like blog posts, posters, and an ST Math Parent Kit. Liz Neiman, VP of Engagement at MIND, is also an ST Math parent. In the past, she shared her first experience with ST Math and how it provided a challenge for her gifted son. This December, she answered many of the questions parents have when they begin using our program for the first time. Check out our new blog post called, "So Your Child is New to ST Math...Now What?"
In our latest podcast episode, EVP and Executive Director of Social Impact, Karin Wu, back to the show. Karin discussed her recent feature in STEMConnector’s Million Women Mentors: Leaders to Learn From series and recapped her recent tour across country with our donors and strategic partners, like John Deere, Phillips 66, Rockwell Automation, the One8 Foundation, and more.
Kelsey Skaggs, our Public Relations and Communications Specialist, has lived in Texas for over two years now. Inspired by her state and the educational leaders she admires within, she compiled a helpful list of 20 Texas education leaders to follow on Twitter. From breaking news to helpful resources, these leading voices in education will inform and inspire you.
Thank you for a great 2019! Here’s to 2020.
And with that, we're signing off for the final time this year. In 2019, we made a lot of amazing things happen together with the help and support of our incredible partners, teachers, administrators, students, and ST Math parents. Thank you for everything!
Happy new year from all of us at MIND. We'll see you in 2020!
