Believe me, nobody was more jazzed about my interview with Consumer Reports than me. I grew up as a kid reading its dry, dry prose, dreaming about the day when I, too, would get to smash the living shit out of consumer appliances until they fell apart. Savagery would flow through my pen, dismantling multinational corporations for the capital crime of having made a dishwasher with buttons that scratch easily.
I had been "funemployed" for quite some time. In fact, I'd been without a job for so long that my parole officer told me I had to go get one, otherwise they would put me back in the hole. So, I decided to go out on a limb and write Consumer Reports about all the torture testing I'd been doing to my half-century-old menagerie of shitboxes. A few minutes after I sent the email, I got a breathless, panicked phone call from the head destructive testing engineer, who told me to get on a fucking plane and head out there pronto.
Plane? Plane? I made a solemn vow in my youth to never get in an automobile driven by anyone else. And even though it flies through the air using what I think is an elaborate series of lies, an airplane certainly qualifies. I cashed the plane ticket in for gas money, and then set out for a road trip in my most reliable 1978 Volare, its trunk packed full of spare fluids, tires, and parts, almost none of which I had to use.
There was just one problem. Their headquarters are located in a pretty weird spot of an industrial park. One of those big skyscrapers-on-skyscrapers places where nobody lives, and the food sucks, but there are thousands of parking spots. They all look the same, and I think I transposed a digit in the address when I was punching it into my GPS (a Garmin from 1997, whose speaker barely works and whose power supply consists of an absurd number of ganged-together solar panels that I broke out of desk calculators.) When I turned up, the building looked like any of the other ones in the complex, so I went on in.
The good news? I got the job. The bad news? The good folks at Kitchenaid were so terrified about how aggressively I dismantled their test blender that my job is "being paid to stay at least 100 feet away from any and all Kitchenaid employees, at all times." It pays pretty well, though, which is to their credit. I think it's because I made a good first impression. And second. And third. They really should have made those chopping-blade impellers out of a better plastic.

From the latest run. No, I wasn't drunk, but maybe the Garmin watch GPS was.
Maybe time for a new Garmin? This one's 4 years old. It rarely records nonexistent zig-zags like this, but it often takes a long time to start up, because it's having trouble... syncing with a satellite, maybe?
Not sure if the problem is my Garmin or that certain stretches of the path have weak GPS signals.

I'm not a programmer but I have a feeling that things going "app based" or running on Android based platforms is causing way more problems than it solved. I'm told that they're easier to program and write stuff for than more refined purpose built software but this seems to lead to a quality drop across the board. Let me complain about the redundant GPS systems I use in my truck for a minute
The screen on the right is a brand new Rand Mcnally gps. The smaller one on the right is a 4 year old Garmin.
The Garmin is purpose built to be a GPS. I have no idea what it's specs are but they are enough to run the map program and reliably get me where I need to go. If I want to update the map, I plug it into my laptop and download the update. It's pretty simple. If I want it to factor in live traffic data, I can Bluetooth connect it to my phone but that's very much an option and not a requirement.
The Rand Mcnally is an android tablet with a map app that I'm pretty sure you can't get on the app store. The map is pretty good but it crashes more often than I'd like. It also needs a Wi-Fi connection to update the map and get live traffic, meaning that I'll need to leave my phone hotspot on all of the time or buy a separate hotspot and subscription for this thing to work the way I'd like it to.
I'm concerned that the Rand Mcnally isn't going to last as long as I'd like a $400 machine that does one (1) thing to given that it's brand new and already crashes sometimes while in use. I'm not sure if it's the App itself or the trimmed down version of android in the tablet but something isn't right here. The Garmin is slow to type on and the map's aesthetic is a little dated but it works. It actually fucking works. It reliably does what it says on the box and I'm pretty confident that I'll be able to use it indefinitely.
If you really want to get into it, the Qualcomm computer that came with my truck also has a nav system. It's from like 2006 and boy does it feel like it but it also works like new, I just don't have the patience to type addresses into it.
Anyway all of that to say I don't think optimized programming is dead, companies just have to be willing to pay for the development.
we should globally ban the introduction of more powerful computer hardware for 10-20 years, not as an AI safety thing (though we could frame it as that), but to force programmers to optimize their shit better

Honda Cant fix there vehicles!
HONDA, YOU SHOULD BE ASHAMED OF YOURSELF!! Over the past 15 years, I have purchased $500,000.00 of Honda Products. I have owned several Civic Hybrids, Accords, an Acura MDX, and 4 CR-Vs. But the best is the 4 Ridgeline pickups I have owned. My last 2 have been Black Editions! This one, a 2023 has a charging pad and a GPS unit which has never worked. My Ridgeline has been back for service at 4 dealerships in 3 different states! I have been told they can’t fix either of these parts. I have spent HOURS at dealerships. I have spent hours online and I know there are thousands of you who can’t get a GPS system that properly works or a charging pad. Honda knows about this. But will they compensate us for equipment which we paid for and doesn’t work? NO! The biggest insult I have is I have been told the GPS system doesn’t understand New Yorkers!! New Apple devices in the US have the ability to send an SMS via Satellite when in an area of zero connectivity. This is essentially the technology using in GPS communicators such as the Garmin InReach devices. Users of GPS communicators have to pay a significant amount of money to send such messages. Currently Apple absorbs this cost but as time goes by I would expect customers to pay with some addition on the mobile bill. The technology will come to the rest of the world as well as Android phones soon. But this is only SMS messages not data nor calls.
Why cannot I use satellite connections via my phone. Two main reasons. [1] Cost [2] Battery. It would cost too much and need a much bigger and powerful battery.
In the UK, when you connect your phone to the network it is via a ground wireless signal then via fibre to the core. So we need wires from the mast to achieve this. In the most remote places this is not practical nor viable. O2 have announced their use of satellite technology for a number of remote masts. The customer still connects to the mast in the same way, but the mast connects back to the core network via satellite communication. As a customer we would not know that the connection is via satellite rather than fibre except for the speed, and the lag. As the mobile operators try to get 4G out to more remote places they will use more satellite communications.
Whilst the connection from the mast to the core may be via satellites, the mast does still need power which is still a bit of a problem in many remote areas.

Jeanne, Tim and Dora are so fun to travel with!
Dora loves endless snuggles and sits happily on my lap for hours as we drive.
Jeanne and Tim are spontaneous, while simultaneously thinking ahead to the next activities and meals. We all work together for meals, camp set-up and food shopping. We shared hopes of when to plan and when to just explore. And we are good at giving each other space when hangriness sets in.
One fun thing I enjoyed was the contrast between life in the RV and life outside. Life outside was views, nature, hikes, clean air and classic camping life. But once inside tech takes a front row seat. Want to charge the computer? Sure, there are plenty of outlets. Want to charge your phone? Sure, here are a variety of charging cable choices. I have no Wi-Fi! No worries, here's the Jetpack so we have traveling Wi-Fi whenever we have phone service. Need to figure out where we're going? No problem, we have both GPS on phones and Garmin so we can find anywhere from anywhere. It's time to charge my watch. Ok, what kind of port do you need? We have it.

I've injured my right shoulder 😓
I've had pain on and off in it before, and recently (like a month ago) I concluded that doing my just-about muscle ups were hurting me because the elbow flare was putting pressure on my shoulders.
So I stopped doing muscle ups and I've been practicing explosive and weighted pushups as a progression instead.
On Wednesday I was doing my chest, and I did some dumbbell chest flyes. I've heard they can cause shoulder injury, but I'd never had a problem... Then yesterday morning I did legs including 60kg barbell squats and 90kg deadlifts. And that afternoon I was hit by the shoulder pain.
So the timing seems a bit odd, but I guess it's a combination of long term muscle up strain, the chest flyes, and maybe the weight of the bar on my shoulders yesterday?
It hurts when I lift my right arm in front of me. Not massively, but it's painful. Out to the side hurts too, but the worst is a shoulder press motion. But I can still do pull ups and hangs without pain, so at least that's good.
I'm feeling pretty bummed about it, but I had noticed my garmin was telling me in various ways that I was over training and strained. So I guess I'm not surprised, and also thinking taking bit of a rest for a few weeks would be beneficial anyway. If it's not improved over the next few days I'll book an appointment with my GP. And I'll probably just train legs and abs for a while with a little upper body, like pullups or whatever, but very gently.

Okay, having driven for more or less half my life with ADHD, here's my advice:
GPS is your friend. If your phone is too distracting, get a Garmin or something for your dash, you can get them cheap used.
If you do use your phone, put it in a proper phone mount on the dash.
Double check laws in your area and your license restrictions to make sure you're allowed to use either of these. If not, you can always make your passenger your navigator.
Music/podcasts/audiobooks are also your friend. Sometimes it helps keep your eyes on the road if your brain has something else to think about, especially on long trips.
If you're new and nervous, start out quiet. No chatty passengers, no loud music, no audio programs you need to focus to listen to. You can use the above advice once you're more comfortable and less overwhelmed.
Falling asleep at the worst times can be a symptom of ADHD. If you feel your attention drifting or feel tired, find a place to park and read/play phone games/call somebody and talk for a while until you feel awake again. I find this passes in a half hour or so and I can get back on the road.
What was that you just saw on the side of the road? NOTHING, that's what it was. It's behind you now. It doesn't exist. Do not look over your shoulder to see it better, do not think about it, move on. This takes some practice, but distracting yourself with shit that doesn't matter means you're not looking at the shit that does.
Make sure everything is secured and where you need it before you start your car. Phone in the holder, headphones plugged in to charge, coffee in the cup holder, bag behind the seat where it won't flop around, etc. You don't need to be doing that stuff while in traffic. If you're prone to forgetting to do these things, give yourself a little mental checklist before you start the engine.
While you're learning to drive, narrate everything you do. This will keep processes and sequences straight in your head and make sure you actually do all the steps. It's also great for driving tests, because it tells the instructor you know what process to use and you're doing it, even if they're looking at their clipboard and don't notice you check your mirror on a turn or something.
Look, I hate that this last one is some of my top advice, but. The thing that most improved my driving, after 18 years, an automotive career driving other people's cars several times a day, and a road trip up the highway where they filmed ice road truckers. Was starting ADHD medication. Which probably won't help everyone, but it magically made focusing on the road, a thing I'd fought to do every day I'd been driving, effortless. I was already a good driver before I got a prescription, but medication made driving 80% lower effort for me, and totally got rid of my falling asleep on long drives problem.
So, I have pretty bad ADHD (and def maybe have undiagnosed autism) and I have to learn to drive. Im 20 and am nervous that I wont be able to learn because I have difficulty focusing on driving and remembering to look before I cross lanes. Any tips?

I’m in the exact same situation at the minute! I’ve been learning to drive for… a while, and it’s not going as well as I’d like - I don’t really have much advice unfortunately. I always drink some caffeine before a lesson, and it does help a bit. I also always repeat directions I’ve been given out loud, because the ADHD short term memory issues have previously meant that I’ve gotten to a roundabout and forgotten which way I’m supposed to be turning.
You do get better at it, though. It’s one of those things that takes practice—the basic things start to become second nature after a while.

If you’ve ever struggled with locking on to your target while using a golf laser, the Nikon Coolshot Pro II Stabilized could well be the best rangefinder for you. The vibration reduction system reduces image vibration in the viewfinder (caused by hand movement) by around 80%, making it much easier to lock on to your intended target.
There’s also no danger of accidentally getting a yardage for something directly behind your intended target, as the Nikon Coolshot Pro will always display the distance to the closest target. Once the target is identified, the locked-on sign will turn green, so you know you’ve got the right target.
All of this happens in double-quick time thanks to Nikon’s ‘hyper read’ system, meaning it takes just 0.3 seconds to get your yardage.
Slope-adjusted distances tell you how long an uphill or downhill shot will actually play, helping you adjust your club selection accordingly. This feature can be turned off to make the rangefinder legal for use in competition, with the clever addition of a green LED on the front that flashes so others know the slope function is not in use.
