Gardening Safety Tips: Tips#6
Tumblr media
Dr. Harary adds to our Spring Gardening Safety series noting “With the weather getting nicer, many people are out tending to their gardens and lawns. We are seeing a lot of injuries of the back, shoulder and wrist related to overdoing it.”
Tip #6 Be Smart About Tools.
If you can, try using tools that are light weight and fit your grip.  Don’t pretend to be a landscaping crew using tools that are too big for the job at hand. Don’t hesitate to use a smaller spade which puts less pressure on your hands. Long-handled tools help avoid bending and stooping.
And try not to take large shovels full of soil, as that can be a strain on your back, shoulders, elbows and arms. Even if your sturdy shovel can handle that amount of weight, your body will thank you for taking it easy.
Also don’t leave your tools lying around. Stepping on or tripping over a rake or shovel left lying carelessly on the ground can cause long term injury.  Be mindful of where you place your tools.
There are lots of tips we could give you for protecting yourself from injury during a gardening project, like starting early before the heat of the day, using sunblock and insect repellent and having a buddy help you with larger jobs but as Dr. Harary points out “It is important to listen to your body, take your time, use proper form and stay hydrated in order to help avoid injury.”

Gardening Safety Tips: Tip#4
Tumblr media
Dr. Christoforou adds his voice to our Spring Gardening Safety series: "Hand and wrist injuries, amongst others, are extremely common when gardening and landscaping. In fact, it's one of the most common mechanisms of injury seen in our offices this time of year. We see anything and everything from sprains, to tendonitis, lacerations to thorns.”
Tip #4 Use Protection.
We recommend that you use a cushion if you are going to be on your knees for a long period of time. This will help prevent strain on your legs as well as knee pain that could have serious consequences.   Sturdy boots and gloves are also very good preventative items.
Dr. Christoforou adds “Use the information in this series to help avoid these injuries. Always wear gloves and other protective gear when working outside, and most importantly don't overdo it. Enjoy the summer!"

Gardening Safety Tips: Tip#2
Tumblr media
Dr. DeGiorgio has some great advice to add to our Spring Gardening Safety series:
Tip #2 Don’t try to get it all done in one weekend.
“Gardening can be very rewarding especially when the first flowers bloom or the first veggie is ready for eating.” Notes Dr. DeGiorgio.  She advises lowering your risk of injury by knowing your limitations, listening to your body and not tackling too much at one time. “It is important to take it slow and try not to do everything in one day.”  Dr. DeGiorgio advises spreading the work out over a few days or weeks, taking your time and taking frequent breaks as well as avoiding positions or movements that your body isn’t used to. She notes “Be sure to stay aware of your body position, and avoid awkward positions.  Also, wear protective clothing and stay hydrated. Most importantly enjoy the process and the benefits of your hard work!”
