Title: This Life Chapter 22

Summary: Dean Winchester is the Vice President of the motorcycle club The Hunters. After almost 7 years in prison, he's free. But things have changed and Dean has to figure out how to put things back together.

Peace. That’s the only thing that Dean could think of as he woke up in the old Winchester home. Him and Sam had opted to stay there instead of trying to squeeze into Dean’s little apartment. It was home after all. Sam had woken up before him to do some morning exercises, but decided not to go on a jog at the moment. He was eating a bowl of cereal when Dean came downstairs, after laying in bed for awhile, just thinking about things.

“Morning.” Sam mumbled, shoveling a spoonful of Apple Jacks into his mouth while he read the back of the box. Dean looked over at Sam.

“When was the last time you had a decent breakfast?” Dean asked.

“Isn’t that what I’m doing?” Sam asked. Dean picked up the box and read the nutrition facts.

“Uh huh, sure. With the sixteen grams of sugar.” Dean set the box down.

“Are you the guy that ate a day old bacon cheeseburger for breakfast several times?” Sam asked.

“We’ve all made mistakes Samuel.” Dean said, smirking some. He knew that Sam absolutely hated being called Samuel. Dean turned to the fridge to see what there was in there. Even though he knew exactly, because him and Sam had went to the grocery store before they went to the house. Because there was nothing in there. Not even a beer bottle. Ellen was pretty good at cleaning, that was for sure.

“Maybe I need to go to the butcher.” Dean said, grabbing some juice from the fridge. “We’re lacking the most important food group. Bacon.”

“Bacon isn’t a food group.” Sam grumbled. “And we’ve got the stuff for salad.”

“Mr. Big Bad Biker is a salad eater. You learn something new every day.” Dean rolled his eyes and chugged the juice out of the jug.

“Dude, that was mine.” Sam sighed. Dean smirked.

“Want some?” He held the jug out to Sam.

“You are ridiculous.” Sam rolled his eyes.

“Yeah. ridiculously handsome.” Dean laughed. Sam took another spoonful of Apple Jacks while Dean drank more juice straight from the container.

“Don’t move.” A voice growled, followed by the sound of a gun cocking. Sam froze, spoon halfway to his mouth and Dean glanced over.

There stood Gordon Walker, gun pointed at them.

“Gordon?” Sam asked. “What are you doing here?”

“Shut up.” Gordon hissed, pointing the gun at Sam. “Not word from either of you.” Sam glanced over at Dean, who was reaching under the island to find a gun. “If you so much as grab a weapon, you’ll be cleaning Sammy brains off the wall.” Dean raised his hands up in the air, not wanting anything to happen to Sam. “Now, I’ve got a couple pairs of handcuffs. You two are getting cuffed so we can have a nice, long talk.”

“You kinky son of a bitch.” Dean said. Gordon glared at Dean.

“I know you wouldn’t care if I shot you,” Gordon started. “I’ve heard you have a devil may care, I can sleep when I’m dead sort of policy. But if I were to shoot Sammy, I think that would hurt you more than anything, wouldn’t it?”

“Leave him alone.” Dean said. Gordon shook his head.

“He’s part of this too. You both are guilty.” Gordon held up two pairs of handcuffs. “No funny business, either of you.” He went over to Dean and grabbed his hands, lacing the cuffs through the handle on the fridge and securing him there. Next, he made Sam get on the floor and cuffed him to the heavy base of the oak table.

“Good.” Gordon said, pulling up a chair between the two. “Now, we can talk.��

Crowley was staying at the garage, with Caleb and Kevin camping out there to watch over him, to make sure he wasn’t trying to plot something from the inside. But so far, he had been a great bartender and an even better chef, preparing small meals in the little oven that was in the bar. Caleb was asleep on the leather couch while Kevin was snoring on the floor. Jo opened the door.

“Get up you two.” Jo sighed. Caleb grumbled and turned over in his sleep, but Kevin got up. “God, he sleeps so much.”

“Probably because he was up until 3 am playing the Playstation 2.” Kevin said, rubbing his eyes. Jo started brewing up some coffee while Ellen opened up the office. Bobby and the others would be there soon. The Wayward Sons were discussing heading back to Bakersfield soon. Everything was starting to get back in order. Finally.

Once everyone was there and awake, they started to get to work fixing up some cars that were in major need.

“Where’s Sam and Dean?” Andy asked as he helped Cas work on a Honda.

“I don’t know.” He said with a shrug. “Probably got too drunk last night and passed out watching Twister or something. Beats me.” Meg, Jo, and Ruby were all chatting together, and the guys were all working. That’s when three girls came onto the lot.

“Hey there.” Ellen said. “What can I do for you?”

“Is this Winchester-Singer?” The girl with very blonde hair asked.

“Well, yeah.” Ellen said. The blonde girl smiled.

“Good.” With that, she pulled out a knife and slashed at Ellen’s face, drawing blood from her cheek.

“You bitch!” Ellen said, but a gun was pointed at her. That’s when she realized they were all wearing vests. Vests that said The Horsemen. The guys all looked up in attention. Ellen held her cheek.

“I’m Lilith, and this is Abaddon and Dagon,” The blonde stated. “And we’re here to get a message out.” Lilith had her knife, a jagged, painful looking thing, and Abaddon and Dagon both had some powerful looking guns.

“You killed our club.” Abaddon hissed.

“And now, we’re going to kill yours.” Dagon added. They didn’t waste any time and opened fire. Lilith charged at Andy, slicing his arm before he managed to push her away. Caleb grabbed her, holding her so she couldn’t attack anyone, but she bit him.

“Son of a bitch! She fucking bit me!” Caleb called out as he let go of her. “Am I a werewolf now or something?” Gabriel snagged her then and turned her knife around, pushing it into her and dropping her to the ground.

“Horsemen whore.” He growled.

“Thanks man.” Caleb said, looking down at the nasty looking bit on his arm.

Dagon had Meg pinned back, ready to shoot her. She smirked, her blood red lips giving an eerie smile.

“I have waited such a long time to do this.” Dagon laughed. But she didn’t have time to do anything before a shot rang out and she fell to the ground from a bullet wound. Meg looked up to see Jo standing there, shotgun in hand. Dagon crumbled to the ground.

“I love a girl who can handle a shotgun.” Meg with with a wink, making Jo’s face turn pink. Abaddon took the time to run then.

“Wait, where did the third one go?” Ruby asked. The guys all looked around, but they didn’t see the redhead anywhere.

“Damn it.” Bobby growled.

“Do you think she’s going after the boys?” Jim asked. “Or has she already gotten to them?”

“I’m going over there to find out.” Bobby grabbed up his keys, ready to head out.

Sam groaned in pain as Gordon kicked at his ribs. His wrist was throbbing. He was sure that it was broken, or fractures at least. Because when Gordon would hit him, it would pull on the handcuffs. He glanced over at Dean, who wasn’t fairing much better. Gordon had hit his already damaged ribs and left him hanging from the refrigerator. So Gordon was taking his time with Sam now. He felt like he had bruises all over his body, and he really just wanted to go back to bed.

“This is what it felt like each time one of my men died at your hands. A kick in the gut.” Gordon growled at Sam.

“Your men?” Dean asked from where he was.

“Yes. Who do you think really ran the Horsemen? The princes? They were the show and they got the job done.” Gordon laughed. “Your dad, he didn’t want to hire me. He had a bad feeling all along. But they took a vote and said they needed a good gunman. So I played my part just right. And everything would’ve fell into place, except that Dean just had to get out of prison, and Sam, he just had to follow in his old man’s footsteps.” Gordon walked to Sam and crouched in front of him. “I ordered Jessica killed.”

“You bastard!” Sam called out, trying to launch himself at Gordon, but he couldn’t get out. “I’ll kill you.”

“No. You won’t.” Gordon pulled out a gun. “You both are going to follow in your old man’s footsteps this way. I’m going to kill you first Sammy, just so Dean has a little extra to think about before I kill him.”

“Leave him alone Gordon. I swear to God…” Dean hissed. Gordon stood up and went to the island where he had various weapons laying.

“You and God aren’t going to do shit.” He said. He grabbed a gun, ready to end the Winchester bloodline once and for all, when the back door burst open.

“Leave my sons alone.” Bobby growled before opening fire on Gordon. Gordon fell to the ground quickly. Sam and Dean both looked up at Bobby, who lowered his gun. “Boys?”

“Alive.” Dean said.

“And in pain.” Sam added. Bobby went to Gordon’s body and found the handcuff keys in a vest pocket. He undid Dean first, who almost cried in relief as his arms dropped. Sam was next, but he really didn’t have the energy to get up off the floor.

“Holy fucking shit.” Caleb said as he came in, the Wayward Sons and the other Hunters waiting outside. “Is it over?”

“For now.” Bobby said. “For now.”

Three Days Later

“I pass on the position of president to Dean.” Bobby said, handing Dean the president patch. “I’m getting too old for this shit.”

“Here here.” Jim added, taking a drink of his Irish whiskey.

“And I hand over the position of president for the Wayward Sons to Andy.” Sam said, handing him his patch. “I think you’d be better at this than me.”

“Are you sure?” Andy asked. Sam nodded. “Well, as acting president, I would like to request a patch over.” The Hunters all looked at the Wayward Sons. “We would like to become the Bakersfield branch of the Hunters.”

“Do all of you agree to it?” Dean asked. Ruby, Meg, and Gabriel all nodded. “Well, then let’s do it. But first.” He looked over at Kevin and Jo, who were sitting off to the side. “Kevin. Jo. Come here.”

“Yes?” Jo asked, walking up to Dean. He handed Kevin his patches.

“Welcome to the club Kevin.” Dean said. Then he looked at Jo and held out a vest. “Welcome to the club Jo.”

“Wait...you’re asking me to be a prospect?” She asked.

“No.” Dean said, holding up the vest. “You’re a patched in member. You’ve already done prospect work all your life.” Jo took the vest and put it on before hugging Dean.

“Thank you.” She said. “Thank you.”

1968 Dodge Dart: First Love

Christopher Thompson bought this 1968 Dodge Dart in 1987 when he was only 14 years old, and 30 years later transformed it into his Pro Street dream car.

Though in 1987 he was still two years away from being old enough to drive, Christopher Thompson managed to cut a deal and buy this 1968 Dart. There was nothing especially exotic about the car, but it was all his, and by the time he was 16 and in possession of his junior license, he had already rebuilt the car’s 273-cid V-8. He also completely rebuilt the front suspension, replaced the stock drum brakes with a disc setup, and installed an 8 ¾-inch rearend with track-friendly 4.56:1 gears.

“After I got my license,” Thompson recalls, “I drove it all the time, and I raced it four or five times a year at Carlsbad Raceway while I was in high school. It ran low 14s in what I call its ‘high school configuration.’”

After graduating from high school, Thompson’s Dart graduated as well, with a moderately built-up 360-cid engine replacing the 273. With more power on tap, it consistently ran 13.80s at around 105 mph. Over the next 10 years, he bracket-raced the car at a wide variety of tracks, including Carlsbad, Brotherhood Raceway Park, Sears Point, Bakersfield, Los Angeles County Raceway, Las Vegas, Phoenix, Tucson, and Sacramento. Los Angeles and Carlsbad, which Thompson considered his home track, were particularly kind to the Dart, with numerous bracket wins to show for it and a best e.t. of 12.09 at 109 mph without nitrous. With a 150-shot of nitrous, it tripped the lights at 10.88 at 116 mph.

In 1998, Thompson bought his first house and set up a nice shop in the garage. The Dart had a few electrical issues, so his first project in the new shop was a complete rewire. As is always the case, while working on the wiring the closer he looked the more he saw, and the more he thought about where he’d like to take the car. At the same time, a friend happened to have a turbo setup for sale and that further encouraged Thompson to dream. He bought the turbo system and proceeded to disassemble his Dart for a comprehensive Pro Street build. As often happens however, taking everything apart turned out to be the easy part. With increasing attention and time devoted to developing his career, the new house, and other commitments, getting all of the work done and putting it all back together proved to be considerably more difficult.

“There was no progress until 2005,” Thompson explains, “and then I found some time and motivation to do a little bit of work on it. I cut the back-half out and then made a crucial mistake. In addition to the trunk, floor, trunk hinge supports, rails, and other parts, I also removed the rollcage before sending the body to Painting & Stripping Corporation in Santa Fe Springs for dipping. Without the back-half and rollcage, the car folded like a taco when it came out of the strip tank. I was devastated when I saw what happened, and was just about ready to throw the car away or use what was left of the sheetmetal to build a tube frame car.”

Fortunately, Thompson called Gary Hansen at Hansen Race Cars in Montclair, California, who quickly talked him out of scrapping the Dart. “Gary assured me it was not the end of the world, and they could put it on their jig and get it fixed. He was right, and I can’t thank him enough for all that they did. Hansen was on time, on budget, and the workmanship was fantastic throughout.”

Hansen Race Cars installed a four-link chromoly tube back-half, complete with an SFI 25.5D-spec Funny Car ’cage. Though Thompson had big plans for completing the Dart after it came back from Hansen’s shop, life once again intervened and it sat idle for another dozen years.

“I knew I’d get to it one day,” Thompson recalls, “but once again the years passed by and little was done. That changed in 2017 when I participated in HOT ROD Drag Week with another car that I own, and my friend Gary Goodner planted the seed in my head to finish the Dart in time for Drag Week in 2018.”

Finishing the car to the level Thompson had in mind was a massive endeavor, but with an unbreakable commitment to have it completed in time for Drag Week, he found the motivation to put in all of the many necessary hours. “For 10 straight months I worked on the car almost every day that I had off. In the beginning, Gary would come over one day a week to help, and then his visits increased in the spring and summer, for the final push. In the last month before Drag Week, I was putting in 18 to 20 hours per day almost every day. I also had a lot of invaluable help from friends, especially Stuart, Andrew, Mike, and Brian. They were there for me when it counted.”

Thompson and his friends did the vast majority of the needed work, including installing the QA1 frontend, sheetmetal fabrication, wiring, fuel system, interior, and bodywork. Though the car was blissfully rust-free, a lot of sheetmetal work was required because of the modifications. In addition to all of the custom pieces required for the new back-half, Thompson stretched original quarter-panels 6 inches to accommodate the rear rubber.

The Dart went to Frank’s Custom in Lake Havasu City, Arizona, for final paint. Master painter James Burdette expertly applied 1968 Dodge Dark Red Metallic code RR1 using two-stage PPG acrylic urethane. “In the beginning, I intended to paint it myself,” Thompson tells us, “because I planned to drive and race the heck out of it, so I didn’t put too much emphasis on the paint. Now it’s gorgeous, probably way too nice to drive and race, but I’m thrilled with it!”

When Drag Week arrived, the Dart was close enough to being finished that it could’ve gone, but Thompson was still waiting on a few key parts so decided not to bring it. The little bit of disappointment he felt was far outweighed by the satisfaction of finally getting the car up and running after it sitting idle for most of the previous 20 years.

“This car means a lot to me,” he explains, “and it also means a lot to my wife, Jessica. She put up with it all those years when it was just sitting around, and when I finally decided to complete the build she was 100 percent supportive. She said, ‘I’ve got your back — let’s do this!’ She never complained about all of the time and money it consumed, and she was truly the key player in getting it done.

“Looking back over the 30-plus years I’ve owned the car,” he continues, “I realize now that it has taught me a lot of life’s lessons. It kept me occupied at some very trying times in my life, and it drove me to learn all about the inner workings of cars. The skills I learned rebuilding it in high school led to a career working on cars in my teens and 20s. Even more important, it has also led to unlikely friendships that are still going strong today. Over the years, it has driven many thousands of street miles and made a couple of thousand passes down the track, and it’s been dragged from house to house and shop to shop, but I never gave up on my dream to transform it into a Pro Street car, and I love it every bit as much today as I did back in the beginning, when I was 14 years old and this was my first car.”

The Six Household Chores You Should Farm Out

In my other life as a gay personal finance expert, I write a lot about saving money, but what about time? That’s worth something too, especially if you can save more of it by eliminating some of the tasks you dread doing. From having your groceries shopped and delivered to hiring an occasional housekeeper, here are a few affordable ways to farm out your chores and leave yourself the time to enjoy life a little more.

Yard Work/Lawn Care

There’s not much I won’t do around the house: I clean toilets, pick up the dog poo. I even scrub the bottoms of those nasty trash bins every once in while. But I avoid yard work and mowing the lawn at all costs. I just don’t like it, and it takes up more of my leisure time in the summer than I want to give up.

A 2017 survey conducted by Harris Poll on behalf of TruGreen, the lawn care giant, found that of the 12 hours Americans spend in their yards per week in the summer, more than half are used working to maintain their lawns.

Who needs that when there are burgers to grill and margaritas to blend?

To me, hiring a lawn care specialist to tidy up my space so I can enjoy it is well worth the cost. It runs about $500 for the first visit right after a long winter of neglect (there’s a lot to clean up on my small parcel of land) and then about half that or less for a spruce up every other month while the weather is nice. To save money, I generally don’t have the backyard serviced from October to May since nobody uses it for recreation.

During the summer, I still have to mow the lawn a few times in between visits, but not nearly as much as if I didn’t have someone coming in monthly. Rates will vary, of course, depending on where you live and how much work you need done, but it’s worth checking out if you want to wash your hands of one of the most universally despised household chores.

Pool Maintenance

Maintaining a backyard pool can seem like a full-time job during the warm months — at least it seems that way. The time commitment may be manageable in four-season locales, but it can prove insufferable if you’re lucky enough to live in a climate where you have to do it year round.

Money-saving expert Andrea Woroch (andreaworoch.com) says she fought her husband on hiring out the pool maintenance at first because it seemed like an easy job, though admittedly she had never cleaned the pool herself. She eventually caved when pool care started really cutting into his free time.

“The truth was, it was hard to keep up with, and he found himself working extra over the weekend to get the right balance of chemicals,” she explains. “Not only were we already paying a lot for chemicals and supplies, but it sometimes cost us more to fix issues that a professional would’ve maintained from the start. We spend approximately $100 per month for maintenance service, and this includes supplies, so it really isn’t that much more of a cost.”

If you want to try out a maintenance service for your pool, ask friends and family for recommendations and collect bids from multiple contractors. You can always try haggling, too.

Grocery Shopping

I don’t have my groceries delivered on a regular basis, but I’ve tried several different services to mixed results. The deliveries are fine, aside from one or two missing items over the years, but for a couple services it was hard to justify the fees that I would have saved by doing it myself. In one case, there was about a $40 markup on the groceries — and that was with free delivery; I decided not to use that service again.

Busy small business owner Marty Estelle Lundstrom — a senior attorney with a large firm and the founder of Manners Pro, which offers etiquette and social skills classes and seminars — swears by grocery delivery, however.

“I live and die by Instacart and Amazon Prime,” she says. “It saves traffic time, line waiting, hunting and gathering in stores, and my budget because I don’t idly buy things; I only buy from my list. Instacart can be about $10 for each delivery, but I have an annual membership for $129 [now $149] for as many deliveries a year as I want at no additional cost. But don’t forget to budget for tips for your shoppers. Amazon Prime is typically $99 a year and allows for free two-day shipping on many items.”

House Cleaning

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, in 2015 women spent an average of two hours and 15 minutes per day performing tasks such as cleaning, food preparation and laundry. Men spent one hour and 25 minutes. Just hiring a cleaning service could save the average American family nearly six hours per week.

I recently hired a housekeeper to give myself a break, and it’s really made a difference. My cleaner comes every two weeks on Fridays (coming home to a clean house at the end of the workweek totally helps me relax going in to the weekend). She spends about four hours cleaning my three-bedroom home and charges me $70. That’s very affordable in my opinion, especially when you consider that she mops my floors, which is right up there with mowing the lawn on the list of tasks I like to pretend don’t exist.

The fee my housekeeper charges is rather low, I think (I’m a bargain hunter!), but anywhere between $80 and $120 per clean is quite reasonable, depending on the size of your home.

Pet Grooming

I’ve never attempted to groom my dog — it would probably look like Attack of the Flowbees if I did — but some folks do, including Woroch, who has a shaggy Goldendoodle who needs regular grooming to keep his hair from getting matted and unmanageable.

“We bathe him in our backyard and dry him using our Shop-Vac in the garage, which saves us some money,’ she says. “But we decided after a couple of years that it was worth sending him to a groomer to get a proper haircut every few months. This costs us $80 each time but saves us so much time.”

“We used to spend over two hours trying to cut and buzz him — yes, it took both of us to do; my husband to cut and me to hold him — and another 30 minutes cleaning up the mounds of hair and then another hour the next day trying to fix the jagged cut. It was always the thing we dreaded doing the most. You can find companies that come to your home to save you the hassle of driving to a groomer, and often there are coupons available for pet store groomers for additional savings.”

Check your local papers for pet grooming coupons and deals, daily-deal sites, and the websites of the grooming services.

Home Energy Audit

Is your heating and air conditioning system working as efficiently as possible — even if you don’t have energy-efficient models? You probably don’t know, or you may be trying to fix problems that don’t need fixing because you can’t identify the real culprit. That’s where the professionals come in.

“We keep up with general energy maintenance like caulking around windows or sealing drafts around doors, but we have a HVAC company reassess our heating and cooling system every year to ensure there are no leaks in the air ducts so that it runs efficiently to maintain costs,” says Woroch. “It gets really hot here [in Bakersfield, CA] so our A/C goes into overdrive, and it’s really important for us to make sure it runs smoothly and efficiently.”
