Mid-century Modern Farmhouse
After seeing a some darling coastal interiors this week, I am excited to share this “mid-century meets modern farmhouse” with a rustic exterior on our weekly “Interior Design Ideas” series.  Here, the interior designer, Kelsey McGregor of Kelsey Leigh Design Co. shares some more details:
“The majority of my inspiration comes from elements in nature. This project was inspired by the quaint town of Telluride, Colorado, a mountain haven nestled in the Rocky Mountains. This home is in Edmond, Oklahoma, where there are, in fact, zero mountains on hand. That’s why we wanted to create a serene, home-away-from-home, vacation get-away. The design was a fusion of intentional rustic elements, traditional roots and fresh modern touches like industrial lighting to ground the space but also add a modern twist. The house is bathed in natural light and backs up to wooded green space, so we kept the space open with a lot of windows and painted the walls a slight gray to accentuate and mimic the outdoors. Hickory hardwood flooring is consistent through this open concept floor plan designed by McGregor Homes in Oklahoma City, which lent perfectly to the mountain vibes we were trying to achieve.”
Start pinning your favorite interior design photos and have a good time, my friends!

Custom Bikes Of The Week: 9 August, 2020
A jawdropping modified Ducati 1000SS, a very clever custom BMW R1100GS, a rare (and running) BMW R57 that could sell for $70,000, and a wild, multicolored Buell Thunderbolt built for the Greasy Dozen show.
BMW R1100GS by North East Custom Even though it’s not as complicated as a current-day GS, the 1990s model is notoriously hard to customize. Its Telelever front wishbone suspension is one stumbling block, and it’s also built to fit together in only one way. So on most R1100GS customs, either the front end or tail end (or both) usually looks out of whack.
The Italian brothers at North East Custom seem to have cracked the code with this one though. It’s a subtle custom that doesn’t scream for attention—and there’s not a single thing that looks out of place, either.
North East ditched all the bodywork, except for the tank. The rear end features a custom subframe with a new perch, and a hand-made fender with an 80s enduro tail light. Up front, the brothers fitted a classic BMW boxer headlight, sitting on custom-made brackets.
Finishing kit includes one-off perforated tank side panels, a Leo Vince muffler and Continental TKC80 tires. Capped off with a neat little front fender and a slick blue and white paint job, it’s a great look for the 90s GS. [North East Custom]
Ducati 1000SS by Scales Studio This track-inspired Ducati is the textbook definition of classic style and modern performance. It’s based on a 2005-model Ducati 1000SS, modified by Trevor Scales at Scales Studio in Miami. Trevor’s styled it with cues from 1970s Ducati and MV Agusta race bikes, and upgraded its components with a mixed bag of parts.
The bodywork took the most time (about 400 hours). Trevor shaped a fuel tank cover out of carbon fiber with a single internal layer of kevlar, then added a Rizoma gas cap. The fairing’s a classic Ducati unit, modified, and the tail section’s been borrowed from a SportClassic.
It’s got a custom-made alloy heat shield underneath it, to protect it from the twin pipes poking out the back.
Under the tank cover you’ll find the actual fuel reservoir and most of the electronics, neatly repackaged. The chassis is sporting the Öhlins forks and Brembo brakes from a 1098S, with Speedymoto yokes, an Öhlins steering damper and Ducabike rear sets.
Trevor upgraded the motor too, swapping it out for a 1100 cc Ducati Hypermotard mill. Ducabike in Atalanta bumped it up to 1200 cc, ported the head, balanced it, and installed NCR race cams and a Microtech ECU.
A pair of custom-made titanium intakes feed the motor, and the two-into-one-into-two exhaust was actually designed using specialist software for optimal performance. It’s finished off with collars from Speedy Siegl, and end cans from Competition Werks.
There’s a lot more work than what’s listed here, making this Ducati a masterpiece with go to match it’s show. Let’s just hope those race slicks mean it’ll actually see track time. [More]
A 1928 BMW R57 on auction The Barber Motorsports Museum is busy unloading a collection of vintage BMW machines, and this stunning R57 is one of them. And every motorcycle in the mostly pre-war collection is in running condition.
The R57 replaced the outgoing R47, and featured the art deco look that had eventually fallen away in BMW’s line by the mid 30s. Highlights included a three-speed box, an output of 18 hp, and leaf spring front suspension (with nothing at the back). Plus the R57 had revised electrics, with a newer Bosch high voltage ignition system.
BMW only ever built 1,000 R57s, so finding one that runs is a rare occurrence. The auction listing shows that Bonhams is expecting this one to fetch between $50,000 and $70,000, and we’re not surprised. [Via]
Buell Thunderbolt by Nigel Mount Presented by Old Bike Barn, the Greasy Dozen Collective is an annual bike building initiative, where sponsors come together to help a dozen garage builders create something rad.
Nigel Mount is one of the up-and-comers who got the nod this year: He’s a fabricator based in Colorado who got his start in his dad’s car restoration shop, and now works at a Harley-Davidson custom shop.
Nigel originally bought this 2002 Buell Thunderbolt S3T because he was broke, and it was cheap. When he got the call for the GDC, he had to kick it into high gear—working during his lunch breaks, evenings and on weekends. And he managed to cram a lot into that time, turning it into a whacky cross between an adventure v-twin and a street tracker.
This Buell features custom aluminum bodywork, along with a billet aluminum subframe and a modified KTM seat. Nigel built a custom swing arm and relocated the shock mount, but also made the setup adjustable, so that he could fine tune it. Then he adapted the six-piston front brake to run on the rear, leaving the front brakeless.
Nigel also cleaned up the top yoke, then fitted new clamps and ProTaper handlebars. A pair of LEDs handle headlight duties, tucked behind a clear acrylic screen. There’s also a custom dash on top of the tank, and a specially designed dual intake that feeds a Lancia Fulvia carb.
And if you’re wondering about the off-road tires, they’re there because Nigel’s favorite Colorado roads include sections of gravel. [More]

2019 Detroit Autorama Painless Performance/STREET RODDER Top 100 Winners
The 67th Annual Meguiar’s Detroit Autorama Presented by O’Reilly Auto Parts was, as always, a fantastic site for the Painless Performance/STREET RODDER Top 100 award program. The quality of cars at this event is as excellent as any show on earth, thanks to the high standards of the show’s most prestigious prize: the Ridler Award.
As the show judges examined the cars in Cobo Center, clipboards in one hand, flashlights in the other, searching for the details that would distinguish one vehicle as this year’s Ridler, we hiked the main floor and basement armed only with our cameras, our impeccable subjective taste, and a pocket full of window stickers to present to ten Top 100 winners. Here they are. Do you agree with our picks?
1931 Ford Model A Coupe David Weinberg Royal Oak, MI Brothers Custom Automotive always brings something great to the Autorama Extreme portion of the event. Bill Jagenow and Autumn Riggle of Brothers said that David wanted “something bad ass.” The result is a chopped and channeled Model A coupe powered by an 8BA Flathead with Harrell heads, Navarro manifold, dual 97 carbs, and Lucky Speed Equipment air cleaners, ignited via a Roto Faze distributor. More details include E&J headlights, vintage brake backing plates, a late ’31 firewall, roll-down rear window, and green stained top wood matching the interior knobs. A ’39 Ford 3-speed toploader, torque tube, and Halibrand quick-change rear continue the traditional drivetrain. A ’36 Ford dash, leather bench, and boat steering wheel add to the interior.
1956 Pontiac Star Chief Frank Howard Venetia, PA The Pontiac was a perfectly restored original car when Frank bought it, red and white and rust-free. Frank had a custom in mind and considered a taildragger, a sled, and some other variations. Working with Tim Kilkeary at Customs By Kilkeary in Eighty Four, Pennsylvania, the owner and builder came up with a version that features many upgrades, but retains much of the original character. Mild body mods include custom headlamps, tucked bumpers, and a slight 7/8-inch chop. Evod wheels add modern flavor. The Roadster Shop equipped the car with a Fast Track chassis. Power comes from a Don Hardy-built LS engine with a Whipple supercharger, all painted with a satin finish to match the convertible top. Inside is a full-leather custom interior.
1936 Ford Roadster George Poteet Collierville, TN Winning the America’s Most Beautiful Roadster award in January made George Poteet’s ’36 roadster, built by Pinkees Rod Shop in Windsor, Colorado, ineligible for Ridler consideration, but not for a Top 100 pick. Eric Perratt and the Pinkees team modified the body from front to back, stretching the wheelbase, chopping the top, and fabricating a new hood, doors, and decklid (for starters). The one-off dash houses custom designed gauges with Classic Instruments workings. Eight-stack EFI feeds the 351 Windsor engine, dressed up with machined air boxes and valve covers. A TKO five-speed and Winters quick-change move power to the rear wheels, created by Mike Curtis. Look for Poteet’s amazing roadster on the cover of STREET RODDER later this year.
1963 Buick Riviera Ray Rezner Estero, FL After finding the bone stock 98 percent rust-free raw material for the top-shelf custom Riviera project he wanted, Ray contacted Justin Nichols at Nichols Paint & Fab in Watseka, Illinois (featured on the television show “Wrench’d”). Justin got busy transforming the Buick from stocker to show stopper. The 1 1/2 –inch chop, front air dam and rear spoiler, and 20- and 22-inch Boze wheels add an aggressive appearance. The rear window was re-angled for a fastback look. The redone interior features a ’58 Thunderbird dash and seats. Leather extends into the engine compartment, covering the Borla air horns, radiator hose, and hood. The LS3 engine is paired with a pushbutton-shifted 4L70 transmission.
1933 Ford Speedster Tim Irwin Coopersville, MI Mike Boerema of Gas Axe Garage impressed us with Tim Irwin’s “Lamont Special” speedster, an authentic ’30s style hot rod. The handbuilt body was extensively punched with louvers and fitted with an early Dodge truck grille. Nick Hardie added the lettering. The suspension is all 1933 Ford on a Model A frame. Vintage-style Firestone tires from Coker are mounted on 21-inch Model A wire wheels, stopped with mechanical brakes. The 1933 21-stud Flathead with a single Holley 94 is backed by a ’33 Ford 3-speed. A pleated leather-covered bench, F-1 steering wheel, and Stewart-Warner gauges fill the cockpit. The speedster was built as “something quick and fun to rip around in.” Tim participates in hill climbs and reliability run and is planning to attend The Race Of Gentlemen.
1956 Ford Fairlane Victoria Tony Confalone Massillon, OH Tony has owned the Victoria since 1966, and Willard Adkins restored it more than 30 years ago. For the recent rebuild, Tony took it to Willard’s son, Wes Adkins at Wild Wes Paintworks & Hot Rod Factory. This time, the build included a custom frame with a rear 4-link and Ford 9-inch plus Detroit Speed X-Gen 535 frontend. Fat Mickey Tompson tires wrap around 18-inch Schott wheels. Dual TorqStorm superchargers with Holley Sniper EFI are added to the Ford Y-block, with custom valve covers and a fabricated oil bath style air cleaner to provide some old-school style. The interior is filled with custom Thunderbird-style seats, upholstered by Jeff Elwood. The 56 Ford made an appearance at the 2018 SEMA Show prior to its trip to Detroit.
1932 Ford Phaeton Roy & Donna Richardson New Castle, DE Brookville produced 32 two-door phaeton bodies, designed by Chip Foose. Gary Corkell of One Off Rod & Custom built number 3. After receiving a top chop, re-arched rear fenders, custom running boards, ’37 Cadillac headlights, and other exterior mods, the Hot Fudge and Easy Green body was dropped onto a Johnson’s Hot Rod Shop radius rod suspension with Posies leaf springs and RideTech shocks. Piecrust Coker tires wrap Wheelsmith spoke wheels. Paul Atkins upholstered the interior. Gary added a burl maple dash and floor mats. A knockout DeSoto Hemi is capped with six deuces with copper plated air horns. Roy and Donna are the new owners of the car, which debuted at the Grand National Roadster Show as a contender for America’s Most Beautiful Roadster.
1940 Willys Coupe Buck Creek Ranch Condon, MT American Gasser Hot Rod Shop came to Detroit with two of it’s handcrafted steel-reinforced fiberglass Willys and one 1947 Thames. Blue Creek Ranch commissioned this LS3-powered Willys. The stunning black rod rides on a Heidts frontend with a triangulated 4-link locating the 9-inch rear, rolling on Schott wheels. Pro Auto Interior upholstered the custom leather interior, equipped with Recaro seats, a Nardi steering wheel on an ididit column, Vintage Air A/C, Classic Instruments gauges, and a Pioneer stereo. The engine is as well-dressed as the rest of the car, and is tied to a Tremec T56 transmission.Looking both elegant and ominous, the BCR Willys was built as a timeless classic that will be a driver as well as a family heirloom.
1927 Hupmobile Bob Mermuys Fenton, MI Bob is a former vintage drag racer who wanted something different. A friend sold him the stock Hubmobile for a dollar and Pat Weiss in Holly, Michigan, built it as a street rod. The body is channeled over scratchbuilt one-inch tube framerails, and extends downward in back for the exhaust outlets and license plate cove. Roof wood was beautifully redone. The suicide frontend includes a ’34 Ford dropped axle and split wishbones. A 4-link rear locates a Ford 9-inch. E-T Wheels drag-style 15-inch wheels (Gassers in front and Five-Widows in the rear) continue the ’60s hot rod look. The race theme carries into the full custom interior from with custom seats. A Chrysler 354 Hemi is fed with a six-pack carb set-up. The Hupmobile was painted at Austin’s Body Shop in Holly.
1938 Lincoln Zephyr Dave Jolly Norval, ON, Canada The Zephyr started life as a coupe. Making it a convertible is one of many modifications Dave made to the original steel body. Other mods include extended fenders, vertical grille bars, ’39 Zephyr headlights, ’37 running boards, chopped windshield, and a driver’s side suicide door. The paint colors are HOK black and Cypress Pearl. A custom tube frame stretches the wheelbase two inches; the IFS and 4-bar rear utilize ShockWave suspension parts. The Lincoln 460 engine runs Super Cobra Jet heads. The Demon carb is topped with a ’38 Zephyr hubcap air cleaner cover. The 16-inch custom wheels with ’37 hubcaps are wrapped in wide white Diamond Backs. Interior attractions include ’89 T-Bird seats covered in Scottish leather and a custom extended Zephyr console.

Will my car insurance pay out?
Last night without my knowledge, my boyfriend let his friend take MY car out and he crashed it. I did not give my consent for this and although my boyfriend is on my insurance, its my car. Im the only owner. My name on the log book. I have told the police I did not give my consent. Turns out his mate has no insurance. My insurance company are dealing with it as a stolen car at the moment but until I get a crime reference number it wont go ahead. The police are not coming back until next Saturday to do a statement. Where do I stand here as im worried because my boyfriend said he could, it wont be classed as theft and my insurance wont pay out and then im buggered. This man has no money so I cant even say for him to sort this financially. Ive got to be realistic. Help!! :(""

Whoever was handling my claim refused to help at all since My sister was not included in the policy. What do I do? We'll take any ideas. We completely know it varies by each of those factors and many more, and we already know the national average. If you know the state average, that's one step up on us. Affordable Healthcare Act (Obamacare) - Survey question ideas?
I'm doing a sample survey for Social Science. I have to come up with 25 questions pertaining to my topic of inquiry. My topic is The benefits of the Affordable Healthcare Act, which is informally known as Obamacare. My hypothesis is the Affordable Healthcare Act would be beneficial if it was slightly altered to exclude the individual mandate. I need ideas for more questions, outside of the demographic questions. Here are the eleven questions I have so far: Do you have health insurance? Yes. No. In the process of obtaining a health care plan. Have you ever heard of the Affordable Care Act, the American health care bill signed into law by President Barack Obama on March 23rd, 2010? Yes. No. Do you understand the key aspects that make up the Affordable Care Act? Yes. No. Somewhat. Did you believe that there was a problem with the current state of health care, and that it needed reform? Yes. No. The new Healthcare Act is going to be funded through a variety of new taxes and offsets. This includes a new Medicaid tax imposed on people that make over $200, 000 and $250, 000 annually, and a 40% tax on premium Health Insurances. There will also be new taxes on medicine, high cost diagnostic medical equipment, and a 10% tax on indoor tanning services. Do you believe that the imposed taxes are worth the sacrifice, so that more Americans could have health insurance? Yes. No. The U.S. Supreme Court is currently reviewing the Affordable Care Act. Several U.S. states are questioning the laws constitutionality because the law requires Americans that dont have health insurance to choose an affordable healthcare plan or pay a fine (this is called the individual mandate). Do you believe that the Affordable Care Act is unconstitutional on these grounds? Yes. No. Not sure. If you do believe that the individual mandate is unconstitutional, do you believe it is worth the sacrifice, so that more Americans could have health care? Yes. No. Does not apply. Do you believe that the government could still make the policy work if they exclude the individual mandate, keeping in mind that this would likely require more tax increases in different areas? Yes. No. Maybe. Having a basic knowledge of the Affordable Care Act, do you think that the government should abandon the policy and work on a new one? Yes. No. We should wait and see how this one turns out first. Do you stand to benefit from the Affordable Care Act? Yes. No. Not sure. Do you have any friends or family members that stand to benefit from the Affordable Care Act? Yes. No. Not sure.""

Should I wait until I am 25 or 26 to start driving a car again? Is it true about Insurance costs? Please read?
Hello, I am 21 and in college. I am in Northeast Illinois. I have not driven a car since I was 17. This is because I did miserably in driver education. I passed the classroom, so technically I passed driver ed, but the driving I failed miserably. My parents won't let me be behind the wheel of their cars again. I talked with a friend of mine recently and she said that the cost of driving insurance in Illinois is dramatically less when a driver turns 25 or 26. I am thinking that maybe I should start driving again at age 25 or 26 so I can keep costs down (especially in a nasty economy like this country has right now). Now, here's the other thing, my dad has cancer (leukemia), he's the one who gives me rides to places, my mom doesn't want to give me rides because she is still angry at me for what I did when I was 17. She said to me You're not driving again, ever. You lied to me. You disobeyed our orders and was arrogant. You're done. I don't care about your behaviors anymore Yeah, she hasn't changed since what I did at age 17. My dad has a had time walking, sitting, standing, etc. He has mentioned a couple of times Its not a bad idea that maybe you should think about driving again, you will have to drive some time, son Then I think about the insurance cost and how much of a hassel it would be. So, should I do it? Should I wait until I am 25 or 26 to start driving again? Should I wait longer? It seems like my mom won't forgive me and my dad has this cancer making it hard on him. I don't know what to do. Thanks""

Auto insurance history question!?

Well I have my first car for almost 6 months (fully insured), so I check no . but then it gives me two options: how long were you without coverage: a) more than one month / never had insurance b) less than one month I guess this question is trying to find out if I had a break in coverage. There isn't any break in my car insurance but I only have 6 month history! Is it OK if I say yes to the first question (Have you had auto insurance for the past 3 years without break or lapse in coverage) ? Thanks in advance""

My insurance company doesnt want to pay!!?
I was struck by an uninsured driver on 02-10-11. Because the driver who struck me was uninsured I was forced to file a claim with my insurance company(Omni Insurance). The car was towed to CJ's collision at 6128 n beechwood Philadelphia, pa ,19138 on 02-11-11. Phone number 215-848-2836. On 02-14-11 Omni insurance sent out an appraiser to evaluate the vehicle. They then faxed an estimate on 02-15-11 totaling $5300 to CJ's collision shop. I went to the collision shop on 02-15-11 to sign paperwork giving them permission to work on my car. They then began the repairs. On 02-18-11 the insurance company then deemed my car a total loss. The vehicle is a 2005 Nissan Altima SL with 96,477 miles. The NADA value for the vehicle is 10,995. According to Omni insurance a car is deemed a total loss when the repairs reach 70% of the value of the vehicle. Omni insurance valued my car at 7,415. They then proposed a settlement offer of 5826.40. They deducted 975.00 in prior damages(which I disagree with) and 1000.00 my deductible. The settlement offer included 386.40 in sales tax. After negotiating on 02-28-11 they proposed an offer of 7835.30. The value they gave my car was 9255. Again 975.00 was deducted and my 1000.00 deductible. They including sales tax and tags/registration fee in the offer. I accepted the offer out of desperation because they also stopped paying for the rental car I was driving on 02-28-11. I work, attend school and have a child my schedule requires that I have a car so I paid out of pocket for a rental car until 03-07-11, expecting the payment to be issued to my lien holder by then so I could purchase another car. I contacted them on 03-07-11 inquiring about my payment and was informed they did not pick the vehicle up from the collision shop therefore they were not issuing a payment. The collision shop gave them a bill of 1750.00 for the repairs they did and the storage fees. The insurance company disagrees with this and refuses to pick the vehicle up and issue my payment. They have also stated this may come out of my settlement offer. The insurance company already has the title to the car and all the necessary paperwork to the vehicle but refuses to issue a payment. It has been a month since I filed my claim and I can no longer afford to pay for a rental especially since it seems I will have to purchase a new vehicle. The insurance company is low balling me and also forcing me to pay for repairs they approved then backed out of.""

New subscriber? Howdy! Everyone else?
One of my hobbies is taking sunrise photos. I was blessed on Friday, March 09, 2018, to capture the following photo. I was standing on my deck about twenty minutes after sunrise.
The low angle of the sun’s rays created amazing shadows on the drifted fresh snow on frozen Lake Winnisquam here in central New Hampshire.
As you might imagine the photo only captures part of the magnificence had you been here with me in person. Lady the dog and I were speechless watching it unfold in slow motion.
Podcast #2 Ready For You
If you’re a new subscriber, I just reinvigorated my radio career. Go back in time to April,1994. That’s when I started a two-hour call-in home improvement live radio show in Cincinnati, Ohio. It was lots of fun solving homeowner problems over the phone.
The show lasted twelve years. I hung up my headphones because I got burned out waking up at 4:15 am to get to the studio.
Six weeks ago, my good friend Chuck Eglinton reached out to me and suggested I put my headphones back on.
“Tim, it’s time to start a podcast,” I believe he said. He had a list of reasons why it made good sense.
You might wonder,
“Tim, what’s a podcast?”
Simple. A podcast is on-demand radio. You get to listen to FREE shows of mine on your computer, tablet, phone or ??? when it’s convenient for YOU.
Chuck and I upload a new podcast each Friday. You can subscribe to them if you want so they automagically show up on your phone or tablet. You’ll see those buttons on the podcast page.
Podcast 2 starts off with me calling Al. He’s got an interior staircase he’s rebuilding. He needed advice about how to attach the new oak treads and risers.
The second call is to Jeff out in Colorado. Jeff and his family suffer from a vexing sewer gas problem at his mountain get-away cabin. His builder and plumber have tried to solve the problem for a year.
In less than ten minutes, I shared with Jeff what was causing his problem. A corner-cutting builder or lazy plumber is your clue.
The podcast ends with a story about a young carpenter’s first encounter with crown molding. I think you’ll love that story!
SPOILER ALERT: Beginning with podcast 3 and beyond, there will be three shorter phone calls to keep the pace of the podcast moving a little faster.

What Book I Just Finished
I used to share with you the latest book I had just finished reading. For some reason I’ve not been doing that.
I’ve got a great one for you!
I thank my lucky stars that I majored in geology in college. It really helped me be a better builder.
I had a deep interest in ground water and took a course in hydrogeology. That knowledge allowed me to build houses with bone-dry basements.
That course of study has also allowed me to help tens of thousands of people like you to STOP WATER from entering your basement or crawlspace.
All you need is to install one of my Linear French Drains to stop water from entering your basement or crawlspace.
I show you how to install one in this DVD of mine. Every person who’s followed my simple instructions has had success.
How would you like to read a book that explains, in simple language you can understand, all the geologic wonders of the western USA from the Pacific Ocean all the way to the Front Range of the Rockies in Colorado?
It’s all in Rough Hewn Land - an AMAZING book!
Keith Heyer Meldahl, the author, tells you how gold is formed in the cracks of the Sierra Nevada mountains.
You discover how in a few million years Las Vegas is probably going to be an ocean-front resort city. No kidding!
One of my favorite parts of the book is Appendix 1. It’s about Deep Time. If you’re not a geologist, you’ll find this part of the book mind-blowing.

Insulate Your Garage Door
This morning, I was revising some of my past garage door columns. It’s important for you to remember that you must NEVER EVER think about adjusting the spring(s) that lifts your door. NEVER EVER remove any hardware or cables.
You can get seriously injured if you unleash the enormous stored energy in the wound springs.
I put links inside the revised columns for a neat DIY insulation kit for your garage door. If your garage was cold this winter, or it gets BLAZING HOT in the summer, this kit may be the ticket.

New subscriber? Howdy! Everyone else?
One of my hobbies is taking sunrise photos. I was blessed on Friday, March 09, 2018, to capture the following photo. I was standing on my deck about twenty minutes after sunrise.
The low angle of the sun's rays created amazing shadows on the drifted fresh snow on frozen Lake Winnisquam here in central New Hampshire.
As you might imagine the photo only captures part of the magnificence had you been here with me in person. Lady the dog and I were speechless watching it unfold in slow motion.
Podcast #2 Ready For You
If you're a new subscriber, I just reinvigorated my radio career. Go back in time to April,1994. That's when I started a two-hour call-in home improvement live radio show in Cincinnati, Ohio.
"Tim, it's time to start a podcast," I believe he said. He had a list of reasons why it made good sense.
You might wonder,
"Tim, what's a podcast?"
Simple. A podcast is on-demand radio. You get to listen to FREE shows of mine on your computer, tablet, phone or ??? when it's convenient for YOU.
Chuck and I upload a new podcast each Friday. You can subscribe to them if you want so they automagically show up on your phone or tablet. You'll see those buttons on the podcast page.

Daily Driver: A KTM Duke II street tracker from Dubstyle
Twenty years ago, street-legal supermotos weren’t really ‘a thing.’ But in Europe, change was in the air—and the KTM Duke II was one of the catalysts. The rough-and-ready 625 cc single was huge fun on short trips, and helped set the template for future supermotos.
Over the past couple of years, custom supermotos have become more common, delivered by builders who value performance as much as aesthetics. And one of those builders is Garett Wilson of Dubstyle Designs in Colorado, USA.
“These Dukes have a cult following, but not many people really know them,” he says. “Google the things—they were nothing short of ugly!”
This Duke is Garett’s daily rider now, but he had a vision for a KTM street tracker years before he began this build. It gave him time to research and collect parts, so when the spanners started spinning, he had most of what he needed.
He started by ditching all the plastic and planning new bodywork. For inspiration, he turned to the past and the days when the bodywork of Austrian off-roaders was relatively conventional.
“I based the design on a 1979 KTM,” he reveals. “I’m also a fan of vans with side pipes, boat flake paint jobs, and girls with feathered bangs. So of course, I had to go with an old school, retro paint scheme.”
On a more serious note, Garett has two main goals with each bike build: make it lighter, and increase performance.
“My plan with every bike is to make it perform better,” he says. “The stock Duke II weighs 320 pounds dry—and even with a full tank of gas I was able to get this one down to 305 [138 kg].”
To level out the stance and proportions, Garett has swapped out the stock 17-inch mag wheels for 19-inch Sun rims. They’ve got Buchanan spokes laced to KTM hubs, and spacers machined to fit.
Durelle Racing lowered the high-spec WP suspension about two inches front and rear, and Garett machined up a set of fork guards on his lathe. He’s also painted the monoshock spring to match the rest of the bike.
A new subframe was fabbed up to follow the lines of the fiberglass tail section. “I also added material to the back of the tail section, making room to flush in the turn signals and LED tail lamp.”
Garett sourced the tank from a salvage yard, taking it off a 1978 Honda Hawk. He then had to narrow the front of the tank, so that the forks would still work lock-to-lock. “I also added clearance underneath the tank, to have room to mount some electronics.”
The headlight is set into a carbon fiber number plate; Garett added a couple of extended mounts to set the plate away from the forks, creating room for the lamp to be recessed behind the plate.
The Duke II is not short of performance, thanks to a strong power-to-weight ratio. But Garett’s boosted it a little further by improving the breathing.
“On the four-stroke bikes I build, I like using exhaust cans designed for the Yamaha R6,” he says. “So I paired an FMF Apex muffler with a Megabomb header, and fitted them together with stainless steel. Combine that with the Keihin 41mm FCR carb, and further into the RPM range the Duke pulls a lot harder.”
Cooling down the motor proved to be trickier. “I took a tape measure to the salvage yard and measured a lot of different radiators, to find one that would fit between my forks and the new tank,” says Garett.
“It took a while to find one that would give me enough capacity without being an eyesore.” He finally settled on an aftermarket aluminum radiator from an old Honda Magna.
Dan White handled the paint. “He kills it on my paint jobs every time—he’s super meticulous, and will do whatever it takes to make the paint perfect. All the graphics on this KTM are painted on,” Garett reveals. “But after taping off the tank I should have unmasked it sooner.”
“By the time I took the tape off, the humidity had created some surface rust on the inside of the tank. So the night before I had to have the bike running, I had it soaking in some as-seen-on-TV rust remover!”
“The next morning I was butt naked in the shower with my freshly painted gas tank while I flushed it out. It’s environmentally safe, nobody freak out—but that’s one story I never did tell my painter!”
We reckon the Duke is close to perfection, and Garett is reasonably satisfied. “With each build I’m trying to class it up a bit to make a more ‘finished’ product. I build my bikes out of the home garage so there are always challenges.”
“#1 on that list is my 5-year-old Cam, who is obsessed with tools—and he helps by snagging all of the 10 and 13mm sockets he can get hold of!”
“My favorite thing about the Duke is that it’s always ready to go,” Garett says. “I ride it to work every day that Colorado lets me. It’s got the right stance, it sounds mean as hell, and just rides nice—which to me is the whole point of having a motorcycle.”
“If I build something that looks crazy but is unrideable, then what’s the point?”
