Building your own workstation offers a range of benefits tailored to professionals and enthusiasts who demand more from their computing experience. One of the primary advantages is the ability to customize. Unlike off-the-shelf systems, a DIY workstation allows you to handpick components that meet your specific needs—whether you're a graphic designer, video editor, developer, or gamer. This means you can invest in a high-performance GPU, faster memory, more robust storage solutions, or a processor that can handle intensive tasks without breaking a sweat.
Cost-effectiveness is another significant benefit. By selecting your own components, you're able to balance performance with budget, often resulting in a more powerful machine for less money compared to pre-built counterparts. This approach also lets you cut costs where necessary and splurge on parts that matter most to your workflow, ensuring you're not paying a premium for features you won't use.
Moreover, building your workstation educates you about the hardware and its functionality, making you more self-reliant when it comes to troubleshooting and upgrades. This knowledge is invaluable, as it demystifies the process of maintaining and enhancing your system's performance over time.
Additionally, the sense of accomplishment and personalization cannot be overstated. A DIY workstation is not just a tool but a reflection of your preferences, needs, and personality. It’s a project that can bring immense satisfaction, knowing that you've crafted a machine tailored to your exact specifications.
In conclusion, building your own workstation is a journey that offers customization, cost savings, educational value, and a deep sense of personal achievement. It's a compelling choice for anyone who values performance, efficiency, and a personalized computing experience.

Thess vs Quasi-Necessities
So even after the holidays, I still had a significant amount of overtime 'windfall', for lack of a better term - it was only as large as it was because that back pay from August and September hit my account at the same time. Anyway, before I dumped it into savings, I decided to have a think about whether there was anything really big that I needed, that it was better to get now with the after-Christmas sales and everything instead of waiting. I thought about cookware and the like, but none of that seemed urgent enough. I mean, my kitchen is still tiny, and that won't change for awhile, so I'm not as fired up to get more Kitchen Stuff as I could be.
Then I hit upon a Facebook memory and realised that Gilmore, my beloved PC, is five years old. I've been using the requirements for running the Silent Hill 2 remake as a guideline for what I need to be running, and while my CPU just about still stands up (i5), my graphics card is running way, way behind (NVIDIA GTX 1060). Probably not doing me any favours with Baldur's Gate 3 either. Now, obviously I can't afford anything top of the line - that's running up to £1k and that just eats everything. But I could afford a GeForce RTX 3060, which is a significant upgrade and will be arriving on Saturday.
So ... cue the mild to moderate anxiety as I install a new graphics card for the first time in years. It's been awhile. I'll probably have to upgrade the whole machine soon (well, soonish), but this'll do for now. Looking at the Baldur's Gate 3 specs, my current card is somewhere between the minimum specs and the recommended specs, and is closer to the minimum, so that may explain the few issues I've had with it lately. So the mild to moderate anxiety will be worth it.
Thing is, I tend not to notice that kind of thing overmuch just because I mostly play indie games or games that are over a decade old (or both) and I think BG3 is the only game I have that's really graphics-intensive from the standard of the 2020s. So I guess it's not a necessity, exactly, but seriously, that graphics card wasn't exactly top of the line five years ago. It was probably time. But obviously I still have a bit of sticker shock over the whole thing, to go along with the mild to moderate "putting new things in my computer" anxiety. I mean, I know I can afford it without any problem whatsoever, and I know I can install a fucking graphics card without melting anything, but I still have the anxiety. My brain is awful.

The market on graphics cards has gotten ridiculous.
Like- a mid-tier graphics card should not cost 650 bucks. A top of the line graphics card should not cost $1,500. On top of this, Nvidia straight up isn't pushing the performance curve whatsoever unless you buy a 490, and even though with the 7000 series AMD is finally making something polished enough to be a legitimate competitor, they aren't doing a good enough job actually being that competitor. Where's the 7800 XT? The 7700 XT? Are we even going to see a 7600 XT before it's time for the 8000 series?
AMD could have owned the general user market by releasing the 7800 shortly after the 7900s. Because most of us aren't cool with spending $1,000 on a graphics card. Hell, I'm still skating on a graphics card from the GTX 1600 series because I don't want to spend $650 on a GPU right now. But at least if I did spend 650 on a GPU, I'd be getting last generations absolute pinnacle from AMD.
Realistically, the correct price for a mid-tier GPU is in the ballpark of $400. The second best card should be priced around 600, and the enthusiast top tier card should be 800. The only cards that should be more than $1,000 should be the "we are showing off our technology" cards. The Titans, Ect.
If we are realistic, the RTX 4090 should be the RTX Titan 2023, and the 4080 should be the 4090.
If the 7900 xtx cost $850, and the 7900 XT cost $650, they would both be excellent cards.
Ending AMD's defense, they are both rapidly heading towards those price points. But where's the 7800 rolling in at around $450? The 7700 at 250?
We're pricing new gamers out of PC gaming like this. You can't only cater to the ultra enthusiast. You have to have a solid entry level too. Because the only reason I can personally justify spending the kind of money that I am to build a new computer is because I use my computer for more things than gaming. And some of those things have the potential to earn me a lot of money.
If I just wanted to game, I wouldn't have a single current generation part in my build. If I didn't need the additional IPC and core count to run simulation and potentially AI acceleration, I would 100% just stuff a 5800x3d and a 6800 XT or RTX 3060 into the computer and call it good.

the 216 is behind the times
(Yeah I know. I'm not called janeway216 here. It's a thing. Just go with it.)
I've always built my own PCs, but in the past few years I let my mid-tier 2016 build ossify into a "you're running a what" build. What I had was fine and nothing on the market was an attractive upgrade anyway, especially once Bitcoin mining and silicon shortages cranked the prices on everything into the mesophere.
Enter Cities: Skylines II, which appears to have been optimized for the gaming hardware of 2028. The minimum requirements are ludicrous for a city builder sim, especially considering that Cities: Skylines will run on anything up to and including a Super Nintendo, but I wanted to play so I started gathering parts.
Let me tell you, C:S2 has been out for a month, I still can't play it and I'm about to yeet my entire PC into Jupiter.
Most of my parts are fine, but the big issue since the game actually released has been my GPU: a GTX 970 from 2015. I knew it was going to be a problem! It's ancient! However, I was really hoping my teeny tiny sub-1080p monitors would make up for it.
Nope. It is so bad that it doesn't matter how I tweak the graphics settings, I only have one quality setting: Potato. All changing the settings does is determine whether it looks like trash at 13 FPS or 28 FPS.
Okay, I can fix that, so I bought a GTX 3060 Ti on Black Friday. Problem solved! Except... well. My case is an Antec Three Hundred I bought in 2011. Great case. Solid metal and built like an M1 Abrams. But it's old and the largest GPU it can fit is 279 mm. The 3060 Ti? 286 mm.
🤦‍♀️
Of course now that Black Friday is over everyone's all sold out of GPUs anyway. So at this point my options are either RMA the 3060 Ti I bought and hope a smaller-sized model comes back in stock at something close to list price, or give up and buy a newer, larger case. And let me tell you. If I wanted a new case, I would already have a new case.
And either way, I still can't play Cities: Skylines II yet...

I'm sorry if you've answered this before but do you have a desktop or a laptop? cause if you have a desktop what graphics card do you have??
I have a desktop, and I pretty recently shoved an RTX 3060 ( 12gb ) into it, so my poor 6 year old GTX 1060 could retire. 😆

“This is actually what I have in my main rig right now. An RTX 3060 Ti 8GB. Considering before then I had a GTX 1080 it’s been great. Though, once I get more money I might step up to a 3080Ti.”

We have everything from the newest smartphones and sleek laptops to advanced cameras and drones. Check out Readytion for unbeatable deals and top-quality products. Join the tech revolution with us!
1. Determine Your Budget
Before diving into specifications and features, it’s crucial to establish your budget. Gaming laptops come in a wide range of prices, from budget-friendly models to high-end machines. Your budget will largely dictate the features and performance you can expect. Generally, investing more will get you better performance, but there are also plenty of good options available at lower price points. Decide what you’re willing to spend, and let that guide your choices.
2. Choose the Right Graphics Card
The graphics card (GPU) is one of the most important components of a gaming laptop. It’s responsible for rendering images, videos, and animations. For smooth gameplay and high-quality graphics, you’ll want a powerful GPU. NVIDIA’s GeForce RTX series and AMD’s Radeon RX series are popular choices. Look for at least an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1650 for entry-level gaming or an RTX 3060 or higher for more demanding games and better performance.
3. Consider the Processor
The processor (CPU) is another critical component that affects gaming performance. A faster CPU can handle more complex calculations and multitasking. Intel’s Core i5 and i7 processors or AMD’s Ryzen 5 and 7 are solid choices for gaming laptops. Aim for at least an Intel Core i5 or AMD Ryzen 5 for a good gaming experience. The latest models will offer better performance and efficiency.
4. Assess RAM Requirements
RAM (Random Access Memory) is essential for smooth multitasking and gaming performance. For modern games and applications, 8GB of RAM is the minimum recommended amount. However, 16GB of RAM is ideal for a better experience and future-proofing your laptop. Some high-end models offer 32GB or more, which is useful for heavy multitasking and running demanding software.
5. Evaluate Storage Options
Storage affects how quickly your games and applications load. There are two main types of storage: HDD (Hard Disk Drive) and SSD (Solid State Drive). SSDs are faster and more reliable than HDDs, making them the preferred choice for gaming laptops. A combination of SSD and HDD can offer both speed and ample storage space. Look for at least a 512GB SSD, or more if you plan to install many games.
6. Check the Display Quality
The display quality impacts your gaming experience. A higher resolution and refresh rate will result in clearer and smoother visuals. Look for a laptop with at least a Full HD (1920 x 1080) display. If you want even better visuals, consider a 1440p or 4K display. Additionally, a higher refresh rate (120Hz or above) offers smoother gameplay by providing more frames per second.
7. Look for Adequate Cooling
Gaming laptops generate a lot of heat, so an effective cooling system is crucial to maintain performance and prevent overheating. Check reviews and specifications for information on the laptop’s cooling system. Features like dual-fan cooling, heat pipes, and improved airflow can help keep your laptop cool during intense gaming sessions.
8. Consider Build Quality and Design
A gaming laptop should be durable and comfortable to use. Look for a laptop with a sturdy build, quality materials, and a comfortable keyboard. Backlit keyboards are often a feature in gaming laptops, making it easier to play in low-light conditions. Additionally, consider the laptop’s weight and portability if you plan to take it on the go.
9. Evaluate Battery Life
Gaming laptops typically have shorter battery life compared to other laptops due to their powerful components. However, longer battery life can be beneficial if you need to use your laptop away from a power source. Aim for a laptop with a battery life of at least 4-6 hours for general use, although gaming will usually require you to be plugged in.
10. Check Connectivity Options
Connectivity is important for gaming peripherals and accessories. Ensure the laptop has sufficient USB ports (preferably USB 3.0 or higher), HDMI ports for external displays, and an Ethernet port for stable internet connections. Some gaming laptops also offer additional features like Thunderbolt 3 ports and SD card readers.
11. Research Brand and Support
Choose a reputable brand with good customer support and warranty options. Brands like ASUS, MSI, Dell, HP, and Lenovo are known for their quality gaming laptops and reliable support. Check reviews and forums to gauge user satisfaction and the quality of customer service.
12. Read Reviews and Compare Models
Finally, take the time to read reviews and compare different models before making a decision. User reviews, professional reviews, and comparison sites can provide valuable insights into the performance, reliability, and overall value of various gaming laptops.
Conclusion
Choosing the right gaming laptop involves careful consideration of several factors, including budget, performance, display quality, and cooling. By understanding your needs and preferences, and evaluating different models based on the criteria outlined in this guide, you can find a gaming laptop that provides an exceptional gaming experience. Whether you're diving into the latest AAA titles or enjoying your favorite indie games, the right gaming laptop will enhance your gameplay and bring your gaming adventures to life.
