hellow, new update, for now this is gonna look a bit more like a random thoughts / gameplay simblr...
ts2 is running amazing on fedora 41 - i'm legit not getting ANY pink even with a full stress test of high lot imposters, a TON of high-poly cc, etc! LITERALLY my dream!
but, unfortunately, i haven't got simpe, milkshape, etc. to run yet. which i've been procrastinating for some time due to lack of tutorials but also laziness, i'm liking my new schedule and i can finally enjoy this game the way will wright intended 🩷
A FINAL UPDATE FOR MY PINK SOUP EXPERIMENTATION
at this point, i have tested sims 2 on the latest windows 11 on various other PCs in my house, with both AMD and NVIDIA graphics cards. there's barely any difference. i still am experiencing major crashing and pink soup issues on systems with an RTX 3060, RX 580, GTX 1660 Ti, and of course my 7900 XTX. dxvk, new drivers, literally everything great minds like @osab and @brandinotbroke and many others have suggested has done nothing.
BUT!
at their suggestion, i tried Linux. Fedora 41 as i said above.
AND ALL MY PROBLEMS HAVE GONE AWAY.
other games are now running smoothly too with 0 errors and crashing; of course i don't have access to the same apps and ease of comfort as i did on windows, but hot damn, i can play sims 2! with and without cc! again!!
i am also not the only one, funnily enough! in our tests this massive pink flashing issue seems to affect not just my PC, but many others who have both NVIDIA or AMD graphics cards. the only link we have found... is windows 11.
with Linux it just all goes away!
so tl;dr;
IF YOU ARE HAVING PINK FLASHING ISSUES ON YOUR WINDOWS 11, IT IS LIKELY NOT YOUR PC, IT IS AN ISSUE WITH THE LATEST WINDOWS UPDATE!
so do NOT go out buying yourself an RTX GPU or a new CPU, it is just NOT going to help! don't bother with trying to reinstall windows because literally it has done nothing for me.
our current theory is that something is screwed with the latest update. in directx, in texture memory allocation - literally do not know. all we know is that a different OS just - fixes it. literally and figuratively like magic.
if you're willing to learn how to install Linux and potentially a new SSD, go for it! hopefully in a few days me or someone else will have a tutorial out.

Thess vs Quasi-Necessities
So even after the holidays, I still had a significant amount of overtime 'windfall', for lack of a better term - it was only as large as it was because that back pay from August and September hit my account at the same time. Anyway, before I dumped it into savings, I decided to have a think about whether there was anything really big that I needed, that it was better to get now with the after-Christmas sales and everything instead of waiting. I thought about cookware and the like, but none of that seemed urgent enough. I mean, my kitchen is still tiny, and that won't change for awhile, so I'm not as fired up to get more Kitchen Stuff as I could be.
Then I hit upon a Facebook memory and realised that Gilmore, my beloved PC, is five years old. I've been using the requirements for running the Silent Hill 2 remake as a guideline for what I need to be running, and while my CPU just about still stands up (i5), my graphics card is running way, way behind (NVIDIA GTX 1060). Probably not doing me any favours with Baldur's Gate 3 either. Now, obviously I can't afford anything top of the line - that's running up to £1k and that just eats everything. But I could afford a GeForce RTX 3060, which is a significant upgrade and will be arriving on Saturday.
So ... cue the mild to moderate anxiety as I install a new graphics card for the first time in years. It's been awhile. I'll probably have to upgrade the whole machine soon (well, soonish), but this'll do for now. Looking at the Baldur's Gate 3 specs, my current card is somewhere between the minimum specs and the recommended specs, and is closer to the minimum, so that may explain the few issues I've had with it lately. So the mild to moderate anxiety will be worth it.
Thing is, I tend not to notice that kind of thing overmuch just because I mostly play indie games or games that are over a decade old (or both) and I think BG3 is the only game I have that's really graphics-intensive from the standard of the 2020s. So I guess it's not a necessity, exactly, but seriously, that graphics card wasn't exactly top of the line five years ago. It was probably time. But obviously I still have a bit of sticker shock over the whole thing, to go along with the mild to moderate "putting new things in my computer" anxiety. I mean, I know I can afford it without any problem whatsoever, and I know I can install a fucking graphics card without melting anything, but I still have the anxiety. My brain is awful.

The market on graphics cards has gotten ridiculous.
Like- a mid-tier graphics card should not cost 650 bucks. A top of the line graphics card should not cost $1,500. On top of this, Nvidia straight up isn't pushing the performance curve whatsoever unless you buy a 490, and even though with the 7000 series AMD is finally making something polished enough to be a legitimate competitor, they aren't doing a good enough job actually being that competitor. Where's the 7800 XT? The 7700 XT? Are we even going to see a 7600 XT before it's time for the 8000 series?
AMD could have owned the general user market by releasing the 7800 shortly after the 7900s. Because most of us aren't cool with spending $1,000 on a graphics card. Hell, I'm still skating on a graphics card from the GTX 1600 series because I don't want to spend $650 on a GPU right now. But at least if I did spend 650 on a GPU, I'd be getting last generations absolute pinnacle from AMD.
Realistically, the correct price for a mid-tier GPU is in the ballpark of $400. The second best card should be priced around 600, and the enthusiast top tier card should be 800. The only cards that should be more than $1,000 should be the "we are showing off our technology" cards. The Titans, Ect.
If we are realistic, the RTX 4090 should be the RTX Titan 2023, and the 4080 should be the 4090.
If the 7900 xtx cost $850, and the 7900 XT cost $650, they would both be excellent cards.
Ending AMD's defense, they are both rapidly heading towards those price points. But where's the 7800 rolling in at around $450? The 7700 at 250?
We're pricing new gamers out of PC gaming like this. You can't only cater to the ultra enthusiast. You have to have a solid entry level too. Because the only reason I can personally justify spending the kind of money that I am to build a new computer is because I use my computer for more things than gaming. And some of those things have the potential to earn me a lot of money.
If I just wanted to game, I wouldn't have a single current generation part in my build. If I didn't need the additional IPC and core count to run simulation and potentially AI acceleration, I would 100% just stuff a 5800x3d and a 6800 XT or RTX 3060 into the computer and call it good.

Everything else is pretty spot on, but are you seriously recommending Dell or HP to people as if they're not notorious bad actors? Proprietary hardware, shit cooling, preinstalled bloatware, all at usually higher prices :/
Also, since OP didn't include it: GRAPHICS CARDS (GPU) I'm not gonna talk about laptops since I don't know enough in that area.
Desktops however... Some Processors (CPU) come with integrated graphics some don't. If your CPU doesn't have integrated graphics you will need a graphics card. Integrated graphics are serviceable if all you need to do is browse the web/use stuff like microsoft word/google docs.
For Intel all CPUs come with integrated graphics unless the product line suffix ends in an F

Ok so what if your CPU doesn't have integrated graphics or you need a stronger card? Well, this all depends on your needs and your budget of course, but I think the "stay within 3 gens" rule of thumb is a good place to start. Graphics cards have had situations where higher end cards from an older generation ended up more powerful than lower end cards from a newer generation, so it's a good practice to look up the card you plan to buy and compare it with some of the alternatives. Also if you're buying a new card for an old desktop double check the dimensions, newer cards are larger and might not fit the case.
Having said that here's some recommendations: The newest cards are the Nvidia RTX 4090 (AMD Radeon RX 7900), but they are ridiculously expensive and not really needed for the average user. So I'll put the minimum at Nivdia RTX 2070 or GTX 1080 (AMD Radeon RX 5700 XT), the great price for power as Nvidia RTX 3060 (AMD Radeon RX 6600 XT), the beefy card that will last you a long while as Nvidia RTX 3090 (AMD Radeon RX 6900 XT).
So You Need To Buy A Computer But You Don't Know What Specs Are Good These Days
Hi.
This is literally my job.
Lots of people are buying computers for school right now or are replacing computers as their five-year-old college laptop craps out so here's the standard specs you should be looking for in a (windows) computer purchase in August 2023.
PROCESSOR
Intel i5 (no older than 10th Gen)
Ryzen 7
You can get away with a Ryzen 5 but an intel i3 should be an absolute last resort. You want at least an intel i5 or a Ryzen 7 processor. The current generation of intel processors is 13, but anything 10 or newer is perfectly fine. DO NOT get a higher performance line with an older generation; a 13th gen i5 is better than an 8th gen i7. (Unfortunately I don't know enough about ryzens to tell you which generation is the earliest you should get, but staying within 3 generations is a good rule of thumb)
RAM
8GB absolute minimum
If you don't have at least 8GB RAM on a modern computer it's going to be very, very slow. Ideally you want a computer with at least 16GB, and it's a good idea to get a computer that will let you add or swap RAM down the line (nearly all desktops will let you do this, for laptops you need to check the specs for Memory and see how many slots there are and how many slots are available; laptops with soldered RAM cannot have the memory upgraded - this is common in very slim laptops)
STORAGE
256GB SSD
Computers mostly come with SSDs these days; SSDs are faster than HDDs but typically have lower storage for the same price. That being said: SSDs are coming down in price and if you're installing your own drive you can easily upgrade the size for a low cost. Unfortunately that doesn't do anything for you for the initial purchase.
A lot of cheaper laptops will have a 128GB SSD and, because a lot of stuff is stored in the cloud these days, that can be functional. I still recommend getting a bit more storage than that because it's nice if you can store your music and documents and photos on your device instead of on the cloud. You want to be able to access your files even if you don't have internet access.
But don't get a computer with a big HDD instead of getting a computer with a small SSD. The difference in speed is noticeable.
SCREEN (laptop specific)
Personally I find that touchscreens have a negative impact on battery life and are easier to fuck up than standard screens. They are also harder to replace if they get broken. I do not recommend getting a touch screen unless you absolutely have to.
A lot of college students especially tend to look for the biggest laptop screen possible; don't do that. It's a pain in the ass to carry a 17" laptop around campus and with the way that everything is so thin these days it's easier to damage a 17" screen than a 14" screen.
On the other end of that: laptops with 13" screens tend to be very slim devices that are glued shut and impossible to work on or upgrade.
Your best bet (for both functionality and price) is either a 14" or a 15.6" screen. If you absolutely positively need to have a 10-key keyboard on your laptop, get the 15.6". If you need something portable more than you need 10-key, get a 14"
FORM FACTOR (desktop specific)
If you purchase an all-in-one desktop computer I will begin manifesting in your house physically. All-in-ones take away every advantage desktops have in terms of upgradeability and maintenance; they are expensive and difficult to repair and usually not worth the cost of disassembling to upgrade.
There are about four standard sizes of desktop PC: All-in-One (the size of a monitor with no other footprint), Tower (Big! probably at least two feet long in two directions), Small Form Factor Tower (Very moderate - about the size of a large shoebox), and Mini/Micro/Tiny (Small! about the size of a small hardcover book).
If you are concerned about space you are much better off getting a MicroPC and a bracket to put it on your monitor than you are getting an all-in-one. This will be about a million percent easier to work on than an all-in-one and this way if your monitor dies your computer is still functional.
Small form factor towers and towers are the easiest to work on and upgrade; if you need a burly graphics card you need to get a full size tower, but for everything else a small form factor tower will be fine. Most of our business sales are SFF towers and MicroPCs, the only time we get something larger is if we have to put a $700 graphics card in it. SFF towers will accept small graphics cards and can handle upgrades to the power supply; MicroPCs can only have the RAM and SSD upgraded and don't have room for any other components or their own internal power supply.
WARRANTY
Most desktops come with either a 1 or 3 year warranty; either of these is fine and if you want to upgrade a 1 year to a 3 year that is also fine. I've generally found that if something is going to do a warranty failure on desktop it's going to do it the first year, so you don't get a hell of a lot of added mileage out of an extended warranty but it doesn't hurt and sometimes pays off to do a 3-year.
Laptops are a different story. Laptops mostly come with a 1-year warranty and what I recommend everyone does for every laptop that will allow it is to upgrade that to the longest warranty you can get with added drop/damage protection. The most common question our customers have about laptops is if we can replace a screen and the answer is usually "yes, but it's going to be expensive." If you're purchasing a low-end laptop, the parts and labor for replacing a screen can easily cost more than half the price of a new laptop. HOWEVER, the way that most screens get broken is by getting dropped. So if you have a warranty with drop protection, you just send that sucker back to the factory and they fix it for you.
So, if it is at all possible, check if the manufacturer of a laptop you're looking at has a warranty option with drop protection. Then, within 30 days (though ideally on the first day you get it) of owning your laptop, go to the manufacturer site, register your serial number, and upgrade the warranty. If you can't afford a 3-year upgrade at once set a reminder for yourself to annually renew. But get that drop protection, especially if you are a college student or if you've got kids.
And never, ever put pens or pencils on your laptop keyboard. I've seen people ruin thousand dollar, brand-new laptops that they can't afford to fix because they closed the screen on a ten cent pencil. Keep liquids away from them too.
LIFESPAN
There's a reasonable chance that any computer you buy today will still be able to turn on and run a program or two in ten years. That does not mean that it is "functional."
At my office we estimate that the functional lifespan of desktops is 5-7 years and the functional lifespan of laptops is 3-5 years. Laptops get more wear and tear than desktops and desktops are easier to upgrade to keep them running. At 5 years for desktops and 3 years for laptops you should look at upgrading the RAM in the device and possibly consider replacing the SSD with a new (possibly larger) model, because SSDs and HDDs don't last forever.
COST
This means that you should think of your computers as an annual investment rather than as a one-time purchase. It is more worthwhile to pay $700 for a laptop that will work well for five years than it is to pay $300 for a laptop that will be outdated and slow in one year (which is what will happen if you get an 8th gen i3 with 8GB RAM). If you are going to get a $300 laptop try to get specs as close as possible to the minimums I've laid out here.
If you have to compromise on these specs, the one that is least fixable is the processor. If you get a laptop with an i3 processor you aren't going to be able to upgrade it even if you can add more RAM or a bigger SSD. If you have to get lower specs in order to afford the device put your money into the processor and make sure that the computer has available slots for upgrade and that neither the RAM nor the SSD is soldered to the motherboard. (one easy way to check this is to search "[computer model] RAM upgrade" on youtube and see if anyone has made a video showing what the inside of the laptop looks like and how much effort it takes to replace parts)
Computers are expensive right now. This is frustrating, because historically consumer computer prices have been on a downward trend but since 2020 that trend has been all over the place. Desktop computers are quite expensive at the moment (August 2023) and decent laptops are extremely variably priced.
If you are looking for a decent, upgradeable laptop that will last you a few years, here are a couple of options that you can purchase in August 2023 that have good prices for their specs:

Игровые ноутбуки всем хороши – они производительные, красивые и универсальные. Есть у них только один недостаток – высокая цена. И это неудивительно – мощные комплектующие стоят дорого. Но, в этом «железном» правиле бывают и приятные исключения, такие как обновленный ноутбук GX6 от компании GIGABYTE, имеющий весьма приятную цену.
Это, конечно, не «звездолет», оборудованный самыми распоследними и ультратоповыми комплектующими, тем не менее железо на ноутбуке стоит весьма годное и производительное, позволяющее играть во все современные игры, начиная от Forza Horizon 5 и заканчивая Call of Duty и Cyberpunk 2077.

GIGABYTE GX6 хоть и называется игровым, но пригодится он не только для гейминга. Здесь установлен отличный процессор предтопового уровня Intel Core i7-13650HX и весьма производительная современная видеокарта NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4060. 
Для GIGABYTE GX6 скорее подойдет название «универсальный», ведь его мощности хватит для любых игр и рабочих целей.
Поэтому, несмотря на статус «игрового», GX6 станет отличным приобретением для геймеров, студентов, профессионалов, криэйторов, бизнесменов и вообще для всех, кому нужен производительный ноутбук для работы и любимых игр. 
Железная мощь
А теперь стоит подробнее рассказать о «железе». Как говорилось выше, основой системы является весьма мощный процессор Intel Core i7-13650HX с гибридной архитектурой, 14 ядрами, способными обрабатывать 20 потоков, а также технологиями Hyper-Threading и Intel Turbo Boost Max 3.0. И хотя это не самый топовый процессор, но он имеет высокую производительность, которой хватит для любых задач и комфортного гейминга. 
Процессор создан по усовершенствованному 10-нм техпроцессу FinFET, за счет чего он способен «выдавать» более высокие тактовые частоты по сравнению с предыдущим 14-нм техпроцессом. 
Также «на борту» стоит дискретная видеокарта NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4060 с 8 ГБ GDDR6. Она несколько уступает своим топовым собратьям плюс – это ноутбучная версия со сниженным до 105 Вт TDP, но с играми и монтажом GX6 она справляется весьма достойно. 
Что и говорить, даже прожорливые Cyberpunk 2077, Ghostwire Tokyo, Atomic Heart, The Callisto Protocol, F1 22 и Watch Dogs Legion будут выдавать более 60-70 FPS при максимальных настройках. 
Такие же проекты, как The Witcher 3, Far Cry 6, Days Gone, Battlefield 2042, Hogwarts Legacy работают с 90-100 FPS. Естественно, что GTA V, Dota 2 Reborn, Counter Strike 2 и прочие «танки-самолеты» вообще будут «летать». Если же в будущем выйдут еще более требовательные проекты, то можно будет поиграть настройками, чтобы обеспечить комфортный уровень FPS.
В целом же 60-е модели GeForce (GTX 1060, RTX 2060, RTX 3060 и RTX 4060) всегда славились отличным балансом цены и производительности, будучи самыми популярными в линейке.
Покупатель может выбрать модель с 16, 32 или 64 ГБ оперативной памяти. На наш взгляд 16 ГБ для устройства будет маловато с учетом того, что ноутбуки приобретаются обычно на 5-7 лет. Зато в средней и топовой комплектации гаджет без проблем справится (сейчас и в будущем) с редактированием фото, монтажом длительных роликов, а уж про разные офисные задачи, программирование и просмотр мультимедийного контента даже говорить нечего.
Что касается внутренней памяти, то покупателю предлагается выбрать твердотельный накопитель SSD M.2 2280 NVMe PCIe Gen 4.0 x4 объемом 512 ГБ или 1 ТБ. Впрочем, есть возможность расширить внутреннее дисковой пространство, установив еще один накопитель.
Геймерская картинка
На Gigabyte G6X установлен весьма интересный геймерский IPS-дисплей с диагональю 16 дюймов, разрешением FHD 1920 x 1200 пикселей, соотношением сторон 16:10 и углом обзора 170о. Но самое его главное преимущество – частота обновления 165 Гц. Также, в дисплее не используется ШИМ для регулировки яркости, а это значит, что глаза будут меньше напрягаться. Поверхность экрана имеет антибликовое покрытие, которое пригодится если владелец будет использовать устройство на улице. Яркость экрана – более 300 кд/м², а контрастность — 1680:1.
Что сказать о дисплее. Сегодня премиумные модели ноутбуков уже предлагают более технологичные OLED-матрицы с разрешением до 4K. Однако, Gigabyte G6X все-таки не относится к премиум-сегменту. Если поставить на него панель с разрешением 2,5K вместо FHD, то видеокарта уже не сможет «тянуть» все игры на «максималках». Наличие OLED-матрицы также сделает цену устройства выше, при том, что у этой технологии есть слабое место в виде выгорания пикселей. 
А поэтому установка привычного IPS-дисплея с FHD-разрешением видится весьма разумной для этой ценовой категории. Единственный момент, точность передачи цветов не является сильной стороной этого экрана, а цветовой охват sRGB составляет 63%. Для профессиональных дизайнеров этого может оказаться недостаточно. С другой стороны, всегда можно подключить ноутбук ко второму монитору, если у вас таковой имеется.
В целом же монитор демонстрирует весьма насыщенную, плавную и приятную картинку без шлейфов – она порадует геймеров и обычных пользователей.
Красивый, удобный и… прохладный
Gigabyte G6X 9KG оборудован удобной полноразмерной клавиатурой с «бухгалтерским» цифровым блоком. Сверху есть ряд клавиш с дополнительными функциями, которые активируются при помощи Fn. Кнопки большие (15×15 мм) и приятные с глубиной хода 1,5 мм. 
Клавиатура оборудована статичной подсветкой – пользователь может выбрать цвет и яркость.
Тачпад удобный, точный, относительно большой и с приятной поверхностью. Работает без нареканий.
Несколько слов обязательно необходимо сказать о стильном корпусе G6X. Он имеет строгий и привлекательный дизайн и красивое матовое покрытие серого цвета Gunmetal Grey. В отделке применяются металл и пластик, а крышка выполнена из алюминия. Выглядит ноутбук отлично. Качество сборки на уровне. Кстати, масса гаджета – 2,5 кг. 
Ноутбук G6X оснащён системой охлаждения WINDFORCE, состоящей из двух мощных вентиляторов, пяти тепловых трубок, четырех радиаторов с тончайшими ребрами (0,15 мм) и воздушных каналов 3D VortX, обеспечивающих хорошую циркуляцию воздуха.
В целом, система охлаждения справляется со своими обязанностями хорошо – перегрева даже во время долгих «каток» не обнаружено. При легких нагрузках работу ноутбука почти не слышно, но при игре в «тяжелые» игры и повышении оборотов вентиляторов, звук от их работы становится довольно громким, хотя и не критичным. В любом случае, всегда можно надеть наушники и наслаждаться игрой.
Автономность и разъемы
G6X оснащен литий-ионным аккумулятором на 73 Вт*ч. Его хватает на 7-8 часов автономной работы в легком режиме. Но, каждый геймер знает, что при напряженных катках от розетки лучше не отходить. Требовательная игра может «посадить» батарею всего за полтора-два часа. Тут, как говорится, против законов физики не попрешь.
Количество и разнообразие разъемов порадовало:

Во времена, когда многие производители просто ставят пару-тройку портов USB Type-C на все нужды, G6X предоставляет приятный выбор. Опционально доступен даже кард-ридер.
Разные «плюшки»
Проводной связи в ноутбуке не предусмотрено, зато стоит отличный беспроводной модуль стандарта Wi-Fi 6E с пропускной способностью 46 Гбит/с. Этого более чем достаточно для стабильного гейминга и видеосвязи.
Также, на ноутбуке установлено фирменное приложение Gigabyte Control Center 3.0. Здесь можно обновить драйвера, проверить заряд аккумулятора, установить подсветку клавиатуры, а также настроить разные функции ноутбука, такие как параметры охлаждения, производительности и многое другое.
G6X оснащен двумя неплохими динамиками, которые обеспечивают чистый звук, но им немного не хватает «басовитости». Впрочем, для просмотра фильмов и роликов их хватает, а для лучшего погружения в игры, лучше надеть хорошие наушники.

G6X – это сбалансированный среднебюджетный игровой ноутбук по очень привлекательной цене. Его главный плюс – производительное железо, способное обеспечить высокую продуктивность во всех рабочих программах и комфортный гейминг в любом современном проекте на максимальном уровне графики.
