Lebanon prisons hit by unrest amid coronavirus fears
Tumblr media
Beirut, Lebanon - A fiery prison riot broke out in the northern Lebanese city of Tripoli on Tuesday, a day after security forces thwarted a potential escape attempt that inmates' relatives said was tied to fears over the spread of the new coronavirus.
The riot at Tripoli's Qoubbeh Prison left at least four inmates wounded when security forces fired rubber bullets, according to activists with contacts inside the facility. Local media reported a "number of injuries".
Videos from inside the prison shared by the activists appeared to show two men with injuries consistent with rubber bullets - one man on his leg, another man on his face.
A spokesperson for Lebanon's Internal Security Forces did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the number of injured.
Two videos reviewed showed dozens of men crowded into a large hallway in the prison, a few holding large knives, as fires burned.
They chanted for a general amnesty that has been promised by establishment politicians for many years but has repeatedly faced stumbling blocks.
Among those who have advocated to be included in an amnesty bill are people arrested or wanted on charges of committing petty crimes, drug crimes and "extremism".
Prime Minister Hassan Diab's government has committed to endorsing such a bill, though it is unclear who would be included.
Escape attempt 'over coronavirus'
The large riot came fewer than 24 hours after security forces discovered a tunnel several metres in length during an operation at Zahle Prison in eastern Bekaa Valley.
A security source said security forces on Monday evening raided a section of the prison housing a large number of inmates after learning that "prisoners were attempting to escape".
Relatives of inmates at the Zahle Prison said the prisoners' attempt was tied to fears that the coronavirus would spread rapidly inside the overcrowded detention facility.
"They are scared about the coronavirus issue, they are scared it will spread," the relative of an inmate at Zahle Prison said, speaking on condition of anonymity for fear of retribution.
Lebanon, with a population of about six million, has registered a total of 548 cases to date. Nineteen people have died, and 62 have recovered, according to the information ministry.
Officials say no cases of coronavirus have been found among prisoners.
The relative said they had last been in contact with the inmate on Monday as security forces were about to launch the raid. "He said, 'they're coming in now, and we don't know when we'll be able to talk again.' I haven't heard anything since then," the relative said.
Many inmates at Lebanese prisons use smuggled mobile phones to speak to relatives.
Video taken inside the prison appeared to show a narrow hole was dug underneath the prison floor. A basket full of reddish-brown earth is illuminated by a light hung on one side of the makeshift tunnel.
The security source said an altercation took place between security forces and inmates during the operation.
The inmate's relative said that several inmates had been wounded. One officer had stabbed by an inmate but was in stable condition, according to a representative of a committee of families and notables who have long been pushing for the general amnesty, known as the "Amnesty Committee".
Up to 1/3 of prisoners could be released
Since mid-March, inmates at Lebanese prisons have organised a number of protests, some of which have turned into riots as the coronavirus outbreak worsened in the country.
Inmates have demanded to be released from detention centres that are operating at more than double their capacity.
Officials say they are seeking to secure the early release of up to a third of the country's roughly 9,000 detainees, specifically those with fewer than six months left in their sentences.
Judges and security forces have also been advised to make new arrests only when serious crimes are committed.
When possible, judges have held interrogations via popular messaging app WhatsApp or other video-calling services, and a top judge said France would provide Lebanon with electronic ankle bracelets which could be used to track inmates released early via GPS.
Interior Minister Mohammed Fehmi said on Sunday that 559 detainees had so far been released early from prisons and jails.
But as time goes on, the situation in prisons is becoming increasingly unstable.

ITHLYN CH 13 wheatgoogling post
aka my author’s notes were getting RIDICULOUS due to the level of bg research required. FUN FACT: writing from the POV of an Air Force colonel with a literal PhD in rocket science is a lot of work when you’re a filthy liberal arts toddler, even when u dont fuckin.... end up using 90% of what you reasearched. Anyway, here be explanations of terminology, tech, links, helpful visuals and other supporting facts for CH 13!

If you want a general idea of what Motherfucker looks like: kinda like this.
Tumblr media
Trashcan Faraday cage. What Natasha’s doing is putting Steve’s phone in the trashcan to block the signal, then opening the lid at two and six second intervals so the signal arrives at Bucky’s phone in long and short periods. This is a terrible way to contact someone. I have tested this empirically (not very well, but I tested it). I used an Iphone 5S, the official Find My Iphone iCloud feature and a steel ammo can lined with cardboard instead of a galvanized steel trashcan.
Tumblr media
The ammo can Faraday cage did not block the location signal at all, probably bc i slapped it together in 5 minutes and didn’t really check that the edges sealed all the way. More to the point: what I really wanted to know here was the delay between the signal cutoff and the Find My Iphone registering the signal as cut off. I suspect the fidelity is very low due to the nature of GPS contact working on a lighthouse protocol, i.e. pinging the satellites every couple of seconds or so, so the signal in and of itself is already non-continuous. Add this to the other environmental factors that can add signal delay and we get a big fat pile of THIS WON’T WORK IN REAL LIFE. But!! This is the MCU, where I can bend physics as I wish, and more importantly my own damn fic, where I am god.
Experimental Results: Did I achieve anything I set out to achieve? Not at all. Am I a huge nerd? Results coming back 100% positive captain

IFF check http://www.dean-boys.com/extras/iff/iffqa.html i’m making up…. let’s say a good 70% of the comms/frequency tech. I figure i have some handwavey leeway given that they’re in the Iron Man/War Machine suits, but even given that they’d almost certainly have encrypted comms. Railguns, in the context of the US Navy: http://www.naval-technology.com/news/newsus-navy-deploys-prototype-em-railguns-on-uss-millinocket-jhsv-4314943. Railguns are very much prototype weapons still in R&D; I’m making up literally everything about how “mounting it on a barge” and “three inches of steel” being a bad idea. I have no clue if that’s a bad idea. Maybe it’s the best idea for a railgun, I wouldn’t know. I deus ex’d the shit out of this.
USS Tripoli, aka what the Delta and Echo targets looked like. It’s a real ship, 1960s era amphibious assault vehicle, in use for damn near 60 yrs and only decommissioned in 2016. Read: an older model of battleship that’s still functional but wouldn’t necessary cause a huge freakout if, say, disappeared by mad scientists/squid terrorists. It was also used for a while as a launch platform for ballistic missile defense program testing in Hawaii, so Rhodey, as a guy who definitely worked on that program, would have cause to recognize it.
Charlie and Bravo target would’ve looked like this. Alpha target would’ve looked like this.
STUFF THAT DIDN’T MAKE IT INTO THE FIC BUT THAT I FOUND REALLY COOL ANYWAY
AFISRA: Air Force Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance Agency. As of 2014 it was renamed the 25th Air Force and assigned to Air Combat Command as part of DOD regulatory “realignment”, aka it does the same stuff using the same people under a different name. Rhodey, as a guy in his forties, would probably stick to the old acronym.
AFRL: Air Force Research Laboratory. The R&D of the Air Force, basically. As an Air Force Colonel, Rhodey would’ve been heading one of the depts/directorates - most likely the Aerospace Systems Directorate, which also handily gives him an excuse to be in Cali all the time at Edwards AFB, near enough to liaise with (harass) Tony.

Near disaster: An aerial view shows the vast extent of the damage to the Gothic cathedral's roof, where the fire took hold and raged throughout Monday night
Daily Mail: Bloodied but unbowed, Our Lady of Paris: Stunning aerial image shows scale of destruction to Notre Dame as ROBERT HARDMAN, the first reporter inside the cathedral, reveals sense of 'divine intervention' now uniting an angry France * France, along with much of the world, has been deeply shocked at the near-demise of ‘Our Lady of Paris’ * Yesterday evening, fresh images of the wreckage were released showing the aisle piled high with timbers * It could have been much worse. The 850-year-old towers which stand guard over entrance are in one piece Beneath the light rain that greeted a sleepless Parisian dawn yesterday, there was one over-riding emotion: That some sort of miracle had occurred in the early hours as it transpired one of the world’s greatest medieval buildings had survived wholesale destruction. The near-cataclysmic fire which had raged through the Cathedral of Notre Dame for eight hours during the night had finally been brought under control and smothered by first light. Notre Dame has, without doubt, been horribly damaged. France, along with much of the world, has been deeply shocked at the near-demise of ‘Our Lady of Paris’.

US forces conduct twin raids in Libya, Somalia
hongkongperfectescort.com
The suspected al-Qaida figure nabbed by US special forces in a dramatic operation in the Libyan capital had been living freely in his homeland after his return there three years ago, his family said. Libya's government asked for an explanation Sunday from the United States after the Americans seized Abu Anas al-Libi from a Tripoli street outside his home and whisked him out of the country.
The raid that captured al-Libi was one of two dramatic American raids on the ground in African countries targeting suspected terrorists on Saturday. In Somalia, a Navy SEAL team swam ashore early the same day and engaged in a fierce firefight, thought it did not capture its target, a militant suspected in the recent Kenyan mall siege.
The operations — one in North Africa, the other in the Horn of Africa — were a startling move to pursue terror suspects directly in two countries mired in chaos where the United States has suffered bloody humiliations in the past.
"We hope that this makes clear that the United States of America will never stop in the effort to hold those accountable who conduct acts of terror," US Secretary of State John Kerry said Sunday while in Indonesia for an economic summit. "Members of al-Qaida and other terrorist organizations literally can run but they can't hide."
The Pentagon identified the figure seized in the Libyan capital Saturday as Nazih Abdul-Hamed al-Ruqai, known by his alias Abu Anas al-Libi, who is accused by the US of involvement in the 1998 bombings of two American embassies in Africa. He has been on the FBI's most wanted terrorists list since it was introduced shortly after the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks. There was a $5 million bounty on his head.
The US Defense Department's chief spokesman, George Little, said the suspect is "lawfully detained under the law of war in a secure location outside of Libya." Little's statement did not elaborate.
Al-Libi was indicted by a federal court in New York for his alleged role in the bombings of the US Embassies in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, and Nairobi, Kenya, on August 7, 1998, that killed more than 220 people.
But it was not immediately clear if he had been involved with al-Qaida since or had been connected to militant activities in Libya, where al-Qaida has a growing presence since the 2011 ouster of Moammar Gadhafi.
His family denied he was ever a member of al-Qaida and said he was not involved in militant activity since his return.
Al-Libi's son Abdullah al-Ruqai told The Associated press his father was a member of the Armed Islamic Fighting Group, an Islamic militant group that battled Gadhafi's regime, many of whose members were forced to flee the country in the 1990s. Some members later linked with al-Qaida, but others did not. Abdullah said his father and the family were in Afghanistan for about a year in and half in the early 2000s.
Al-Libi was then imprisoned in Iran for seven years, Abdullah said. He did not elaborate, but Iran jailed a number of al-Qaida-linked figures who fled Afghanistan after the 2001 US-led invasion of that country.
The family returned to Tripoli in 2010 under a rehabilitation program run by Gadhafi's son. Since then, al-Libi was not involved with any groups. "He would go from the house to the mosque, and from the mosque to the house," the son said. He said his father had hired a lawyer and was trying to clear his name in connection to the 1998 African embassy attacks.
A senior US military official said the Tripoli raid was carried out by the US Army's Delta Force, which has responsibility for counterterrorism operations in North Africa. The official was not authorized to speak publicly about the operation and discussed it on condition of anonymity.
Family members said gunmen in a three-car convoy seized al-Libi outside his home in the Libyan capital.
His brother, Nabih, said the 49-year-old was parking outside his house early Saturday after dawn prayers, when three vehicles surrounded his vehicle. The gunmen smashed his car's window and seized his gun before grabbing al-Libi and fleeing. The brother said al-Libi's wife saw the kidnapping from her window and described the abductors as foreign-looking armed "commandos."
Libya asked the United States on Sunday for "clarifications" regarding the raid and said any Libyan should face trial in his own country.
The raid puts the fragile Libyan government in a delicate position — the country's post-Gadhafi leadership faces criticism from some Libyans that it is too close to the United States, and it cannot be seen to be allowing US forces to act freely on Libyan territory. The central government has had only limited authority around the country, where militiamen — many of the Islamic militants themselves — hold considerable power and have unleashed their anger on the government in the past.
The country's turmoil has allowed al-Qaida and other militant groups to increase their activity here.On Sept. 11, 2011, militants attacked the US consulate in Benghazi, Libya's second largest city, killing the American ambassador and three other Americans, an attack that demonstration the power of militias and the weakness of the government.
Al-Libi was believed to be a computer specialist with al-Qaida. He studied electronic and nuclear engineering, graduating from Tripoli University, and was an anti-Gadhafi activist.
He is believed to have spent time in Sudan, where bin Laden was based in the early 1990s. After bin Laden was forced to leave Sudan, al-Libi turned up in Britain in 1995 where he was granted political asylum under unclear circumstances and lived in Manchester. He was arrested by Scotland Yard in 1999, but released because of lack of evidence and later fled Britain.
In the earlier raid Saturday, the Navy SEAL team reached land near a town in southern Somalia before militants of the al-Qaida-linked terrorist group al-Shabab rose for dawn prayers, US and Somali officials told The Associated Press. American officials said there were no US casualties in either the Somali or Libyan operation.
The assault on a house in Barawe targeted a specific al-Qaida suspect related to the Nairobi mall attack, but the operation did not get its target, one current and one former US military official told the AP. It was carried out by members of SEAL Team Six, the same unit that killed in Laden in his Pakistan hideout in 2011, another senior US military official said.
Both spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the raid publicly.
The team ran into fiercer resistance than expected, and after a 15 minutes to 20 minute firefight, the unit's leader decided to abort the mission and the Americans swam away, the official said. SEAL Team Six has responsibility for counterterrorism activities in the Horn of Africa.
A US official said US forces disengaged after inflicting some casualties on the fighters, said the official, who was not authorized to speak by name and insisted on anonymity.
A resident of Barawe, which is about 150 miles south of Mogadishu, said by telephone that heavy gunfire woke up residents before dawn prayers.
The US forces attacked a two-story beachside house where foreign fighters lived, said an al-Shabab fighter who gave his name as Abu Mohamed and who said he had visited the scene.
An al-Shabab official, Sheikh Abdiaziz Abu Musab, said in an audio message that the raid failed to achieve its goals.
Little confirmed that US military personnel were involved in a counterterrorism operation against a known al-Shabab terrorist in Somalia, but did not provide details.
The leader of al-Shabab, Mukhtar Abu Zubeyr, also known as Ahmed Godane, claimed responsibility for the mall attack, a four-day terrorist siege that began Sept. 21 and killed at least 67 people. A Somali intelligence official said the al-Shabab leader was the US target.
Kerry said the United States would "continue to try to bring people to justice in an appropriate way with hopes that ultimately these kinds of activities against everybody in the world will stop."
Al-Shabab has a formal alliance with al-Qaida, and hundreds of men from the US, Britain and Middle Eastern countries fight alongside Somali members of al-Shabab.
Al-Shabab and al-Qaida have flourished in Somalia for years.
The raid in Somalia came 20 years after the "Black Hawk Down" battle in Mogadishu, when a mission to capture Somali warlords in the capital went awry after militiamen shot down two US helicopters. Eighteen US soldiers died in the battle, which marked the beginning of the end of that US military mission to try to bring stability to the nation.
Since then, US military intervention has been limited to missile attacks and lightning operations by special forces.
In September 2009 a daylight commando raid in Barawe killed six people, including Saleh Ali Saleh Nabhan, one of the most-wanted al-Qaida operatives in the region and an alleged plotter in the embassy bombings.
Al-Shabab later posted pictures on the Internet of what it said was US military gear left behind in the raid. Pictures showed items including bullets, an ammunition magazine, a military GPS device and a smoke and flash-bang grenade used to clear rooms.

Tazio Nuvolari 1892-1953
Tumblr media
- Nuvolari on the start line at Monza in 1932 in his Alfa Romeo Tipo B. IT’S CLAIMED THAT AFTER SEEING Vincenzo Lancia’s race win at the Circuito di Brescia, a very young Nuvolari became ‘hooked on speed’. Lancia’s victory in a Fiat certainly made an impression on a young man whose own life would generate much adulation; Ferdinand Porsche rated him as the ‘greatest of all time’ whilst Fangio considered him the most ‘legendary of champions’. There is little doubt Nuvolari captured race fans hearts with his abilities and often extreme bravery. His total disregard for personal safety was apparent at an early age, testing a home-made parachute from the roof of his parents’ house near Mantua, Northern Italy could have finished any ideas of motorsport. During WW1 Nuvolari became an ambulance driver to and from the front line although stories abound that he lost this job as a result of driving too fast and dangerous for official liking. Married in 1915 to Carolina Perini, post-war motorcycle racing was the next challenge for 28-year-old Tazio, his bike career would go on to span 124 races with 49 victories plus 40 fastest laps taking the Italian 350cc Championship on a Bianchi. Opening a car dealership in his home village of Castel d’Ario in 1922 did little to slow Nuvolari or the tales of his exploits; at Monza motorbike GP, a crash in practice resulted in fractured legs with plaster casts. On race day his mechanics lowered him onto the bike, Tazio won but unable to dismount he was lifted from his machine postchequered flag. In 1924 Nuvolari’s first victories on four wheels arrived aged 32; Bianchi had constructed a 2 litre race car which Tazio piloted at the Tigullio Circuit. Class wins at Savio and Polesine followed the same year in the 1.5 litre Chiribiri Monza. Nuvolari was getting noticed and victor Enzo Ferrari confessed postrace ‘this little man put the squeeze on me, at one point I thought he would take victory from my fabulous 3 litre Alfa Romeo’. It was Vittorio Jano who offered an opportunity to test the legendary Alfa P2 at Monza, Tazio lapped at 3 minutes 32 seconds, quicker than works driver Antonio Ascari. All his good work was undone when a serious crash wrecked the Alfa and put Nuvolari in hospital. Upset Jano pledged it would be a long time before a second chance would be offered in a works car but 12 days later Tazio discharged himself, returning to the circuit. Getting astride his 350cc Bianchi race bike again required the assistance of his mechanics yet Nuvolari went on to take victory on a rain soaked track winning the Grand Prix of Nations. Bianchi entered their Type 20 in standard road trim for the inaugural Mille Miglia in 1927 with Tazio at the wheel. In an all Italian field of 77, only 54 would complete the gruelling 1000-mile race, the Bianchi finished 10th. With a factory drive not likely, Tazio started his own team and purchased a pair of Bugatti Type 35’s in partnership with Achille Varsi; another bike racer from Bianchi. The pair became great friends and the greatest of rivals on two and four wheels, especially when Varsi purchased an Alfa P2 hoping to gain an advantage over Nuvolari. In 1928 the Bugatti brought Tazio’s first international win at the Grand Prix of Tripoli; Varsi finished 3rd in only his second car race. Nuvolari struggled throughout 1929 but after finally signing for Alfa he found himself alongside his rival Varsi both in new 1750 6C’s for the 1930 Mille Miglia; a race that elevated both to household names but one became a super-star. With both drivers desperate to win, the team were forced to request they hold station, fearing losing both as they pushed boundaries passing each other. With time running out Nuvolari switched off his headlights when gaining on his rival, whilst Varsi thought the win was his. Once in position the second Alfa’s lights illuminated the darkening skies and Nuvolari blasted passed on his way to victory; the press and the public loved it. A strained relationship developed within the team but victory in the RAC TT race in Ulster ensured Tazio and team boss Enzo Ferrari continued together. In 1931 regulations for Grand Prix car racing dictated races should be of ten hour duration and a two driver format allowed for personnel swops in the event of mechanical failure with points scored adjusted. Piloting the Alfa 8C resulted in a 2nd at the Belguim GP, then 11th at Montlhery France won by Varsi and Louis Chiron in a Type 51 at the home of Bugatti. Varsi had also won the previous year’s Targa Florio in a P2 Alfa, one event Nuvolari wanted to add to his CV. By piloting the marques 8C to victory on the original Grand Circuit of 146kms in 1931 Tazio achieved something that eluded his motor racing inspiration (Vincenzo Lancia) decades before; a feat he repeated in 1932. Le Mans in 1933 saw super charged Alfa 8C’s take all podium spots; Nuvolari shared with French rising endurance racer Raymond Sommer winning by just 10 seconds and 400 yards from Chinetti and Gunsburg after 233 laps.

- Alfa's 308C - this car set a lap record at the Pau GP on its debut with Nuvolari at the wheel. When the relationship with Enzo became fraught, a deal was struck with Maserati. Tazio also entered the Tourist Trophy race in Ulster winning comfortably in a supercharged MG K3 Magnette; when asked what he thought of the brakes on his car the reply was ‘don’t really know, I didn’t use them much’. At the Circuit of Pietro Bordino in Alessandria Northern Italy, driving a privately entered Maserati, Nuvolari pushed too hard and crashed on a wet track hitting a tree and shattering his leg; doctors considered amputation but Tazio’s wife Carolina persuaded them otherwise. Whilst in hospital a plot was hatched to enter the Avus-Rennen race a month later; the high speed banked circuit had seen Varsi take victory the season prior. Tazio told his mechanic they were leaving for Germany in the Maserati. ‘As spectators?’ The reply ‘no to race’ and so the team rigged up a stirrup for his broken leg whilst Nuvolari developed a technique of operating 3 pedals with one foot; he finished 5th. Ferrari offered an opportunity to return to the Alfa family which was taken forcing Varsi’s move to Auto Union keeping his old rival at a distance. How much this inspired Nuvolari to what many consider his finest hour would be speculation but the German Grand Prix of 1935 saw 300,000 spectators at the Nurburgring to witness one of motorsports greatest moments. Tazio’s obsolete P3 Alfa was light, certainly, but even after engine work to increase the 3.2 capacity it lacked the performance of the five 375 hp Mercedes 4 litre W25’s entered and four Auto Unions of five litre capacity. Not helped by a poor start or two minutes lost refuelling many reports speak of Nuvolari driving beyond the limits of the car throughout the race and victory in the Nazi’s home event. 1936 saw victory at Long Island and the Vanderbilt Cup with Alfa from 8th on the grid; the event was won by Bernd Rosemeyer in 1937 just prior to his death chasing a Land Speed Record on the autobahn. His seat in the Auto Union was taken by Nuvolari and victories at the British and Italian GPs followed. 28 years of inhaling exhaust fumes were taking their toll on Tazio’s health but he was victorious at the final GP prior to WW2 in Belgrade. The 1947 Albi GP in France was the Italian’s final GP win in 1947 although he continued to compete until the end of the decade. A career spanning 229 races, 92 victories, 38 class wins, 59 fastest laps and 14 major accidents. Tazio Nuvolari died August 1953, buried in his race suit within his family tomb. The inscription above the entrance reads ‘You will ride with even more speed on the streets of Heaven’. __________ from p. 19 of issue March 2017 Subscribe now - www.classicmotor.co.uk
