Somehow he is simultaneously working for and working against every single faction in the story. He's my precious little catboy he's a war criminal (literal) he’s done everything wrong in his entire life. 5 different guys are trying to gaslight him simultaneously and one is hunting him for sport. Every single found family this man has been part of has divorced him. His own creator doesn’t understand why he’s popular with female fans despite illustrating a whole scene where he loads a rifle with his tongue. The healthiest relationship he has ever maintained in his entire life is with a man he’s never spoken to, they just watch each other eat snow through binoculars. Even all the other traitors and murderers he hangs out with think he’s a fucked up little freak. The nicest thing he ever did for anyone was shoot himself in the face and die

okay so yk how when ogata is about to die he sees multiple versions of his past self talking to him? there was always one that was less obvious to me than the others and its the from abashiri prison

i think its not a coincidence that this moment specifically got chosen for this dialogue and im gonna try to attempt to explain why i think it was such an excellent choice!

so, firstly, the moment at which i think this takes place is directly after ogata shot wilk and sugimoto, so directly after his betrayal, because hes sitting in a similar way and in an elevated place

secondly, regarding the light, usually when a character represents light to another its meant like the sun or maybe even a guiding light, or with the text of her giving him light and then killing him maybe even a bomb, but in this case the light would be the flares, so neither only positive nor directly death causing.

of course the sun or maybe a lantern would have also made sense if it was just about asirpa showing him the way of leading a good life or whatever, and the bomb wouldve made sense if asirpa did end up delivering the killing blow, but i dont think the flares were used simply because of the war motif or because flares just so happened to be the light source in that moment.

as we can see, in the panel ogata is trying to cover himself from the light, likely because he doesnt want to get found out about his betrayal, but since the panel directly before that says asirpa reminded him of yuusaku and made him realize his guilt, he likely didnt want those parts of himself to get exposed either, not just to asirpa and the others but to himself.

and i think this works nicely specifically with his death too, since flares can be used to detect the enemy and since asirpa now knew he was her enemy she was ready to shoot again and kill him once and for all, but he chose to end it even before that, just from seeing the flares and knowing he was exposed, his betrayal but also his guilt.

however, flares can of course also be used to signal to allies, and i think it really depends on if you think redemption was at any point possible for him, but i think it could also mean that the moment where he shot wilk and betrayed asirpa was the deciding moment where it was too late since it was at that point the panel got chosen and if he didnt kill them he wouldnt have had to feel exposed for betrayal, but maybe this is looking too far into it.

I went into GK tumblr before I finished GK and saw Ogata in a hockey uniform and I was like “Oh is there a major time skip near the end? That’s cool!” Yk like demon slayer or smth and when I got to the end I was so confused like “where tf was the fucked up man in a hockey uniform I want to see everyone’s reincarnations”

Then I found out that Noda is winning the idgaf war by reusing the designs of war criminals and making them into teenage boys playing hockey, but I still got my wish of seeing (mostly) everyone’s reincarnations (so far)

I gotta really make more notes and shit before this is a coherent thought but like. I think it's interesting that the tritagonists of Golden Kamuy, that being Asirpa, Sugimoto, and Shiraishi, all have some experience of being dehumanized/unpersoned. Asirpa via her identity as both Ainu and, arguably, an Ainu girl specifically. Sugimoto through the military and the Japanese government's casting aside of veterans. Shiraishi as an inmate within the Japanese prison system since presumably a young age.

The funniest part about GK is that I thankfully have yet to see people incorrectly glorifying it as nationalistic dogma the way some idiots like doing with pieces of media. Like don't get me wrong, I'm sure there are people with weak enough reading comprehension to do that, yeah, but they have to compete with how every actively fascist character ends up dead or bereft of purpose and precious things by the end of the story. Tsurumi lost everything twice over, most all of his men are dead, and the two guys that aren't and seem to be fine and happy are short multiple loved ones and a sense of purpose or closure because their lives were built on lies that they ate up like a pack of hungry dogs. Also the guy literally carrying the imperialist symbol as an ideological conduit got fucking merc'd and every image I see of him with the rising sun flag is usually paired with him being explicitly homoerotic towards his freak brother (who was also the dude that merc'd him). I've been enjoying reading other people's AUs and started thinking about one myself where things go as they did except Ogata hasn't shot himself, failed to meet his initial goals and dissapeared without a trace.
