Happy holidays, @gn002 !! I’m your TKRB Secret Santa! I decided to write a drabble for you here, and I greatly enjoyed writing for both Horikawa and Kane-san. I hope you enjoy, and I hope you have a lovely rest of the year!

Winter’s chill is bitter and unrelenting, and right now it feels like nobody knows this better than Horikawa Kunihiro.

It was rather unlike himself to forget to put on a pair of gloves before he left the house--everything else was accounted for from head to toe, aside from those ten digits tightly grasping the small, neatly wrapped gift box he held carefully to his chest.

Horikawa exhales, watching his breath dissipate into the air like mist, before he buries his nose into the warmth of his scarf and presses forward.

It’s Christmas eve, finally, and his mission to pass out the gifts he’d gotten for everyone close to him was nearly reaching its conclusion; there was just one more left to deliver, and this one happened to be the most important one of the bunch.

It was for his closest friend, after all. Someone he’d grown attached to, somehow winded up spending even more time around said friend than his own brothers over time (they seemed to have no qualms with this, though, and Yamabushi even seemed pleased to know that Horikawa was getting out more to see friends), and someone he was very thankful for.

Friendship was a strong bond, after all.

Horikawa turns a corner, finally making it onto the street he’d been making a beeline for, and breaks into a run to make his arrival just a bit faster. It’s cold, after all, he wants to get somewhere warm for a bit before having to go back out and head home, at least on the journey back he can shove his hands into his pockets to keep them from feeling like ice.

He stops at a certain doorstep, shifts around in place a bit (the gift in his hands is shifted into the crook of his elbow), before he raises a now-free hand to knock firmly at the door.

There’s a minute’s pause before he gets any sort of response, and Horikawa almost begins to wonder if his gift’s recipient was currently out and about. That would be reasonable, wouldn’t it, on a day like today, perhaps he should come back tomorrow and just head home for now, it’d be warmer that way--

The door finally opens, and the first thing he sees is a mess of long, black hair covering an all-too familiar face. Horikawa blinks a couple times in surprised succession, staring at the sight before the figure before him moves to brush some stray locks of hair away.

“...Kane-san, were you asleep?” He asks gingerly, trying to stifle a laugh threatening to burst forth. What he earns at first is a muffled grumble in response.

“Maybe,” comes Izuminokami Kanesada’s answer, alongside a shake of the head to dispel the remaining strands from his own face, “but it’s no big deal. What’re you doing here anyways, Kunihiro? It’s too cold out to be wandering around, you know.”

“Oh, I--” Horikawa pauses for a second, shifting his parcel around once again so it’s firmly grasped between numb fingers, “I wanted to deliver your gift now. I know you’re busy tomorrow, and I didn’t really want to wait until after the holiday was over. Is it alright if I come in for a moment?”

Please, he thinks to himself, since it really is freezing out here.

“Huh? Oh. Yeah, ‘course you can come in for a second,” Kanesada replies, a finger lightly scratching at his cheek before he moves away from the door frame, one hand beckoning Horikawa inside. There isn’t even a moment’s hesitation before Horikawa bursts through, offering a bright ‘thank you’ before he turns to watch as Kanesada shuts the door, shrugs his shoulders, and takes a couple steps closer to Horikawa.

“You said you had a gift for me, is that it?” A finger points idly to the little package in Horikawa’s hands, and he nods in response. “You didn’t have to get me anything, Kunihiro! I mean, I’m gonna get you something--I was just waiting until all those ‘day after Christmas’ sales start, y’know, because then everything’s less expensive and I have a better chance of finding something you like, don’t I--”

“It’s alright, Kane-san,” Horikawa stops him from babbling on further, laughing gently. “I know you’re not exactly rolling in funds right now. You don’t have to make up excuses.”

Kanesada grumbles a bit, but there’s still a hint of a smile on his face anyways.

“Alright, you got me. But are you gonna give me the gift or just keep holding it like that? I can’t open it if you don’t let me have it, Kunihiro.”

“Ah--! Oh, right, right, here...”

Horikawa extends his arms, holding out the parcel with hands that feel like they’re shaking ever so slightly. He’s nervous about this, because it feels like such a cheesy gift now that he thinks about it, so what if he gets one of those fake ‘oh, thank you’ responses? Perhaps he should’ve gotten something different, maybe make a gift basket with that new hair product Kanesada had been looking at recently or something, or...

...he stops his train of thought once he realizes that Kanesada had unwrapped the parcel already, and was proceeding to open the little box. Horikawa swallows the awkward lump in his throat as he eyes Kanesada’s expression upon seeing the gift inside.

“...Is it alright?” Horikawa asks quietly, unsure for once as to what Kanesada was thinking. “I know it might be a little silly, but we both got our ears pierced recently, and... I decided it’d be a nice thing, to get us matching earrings... They’ve got the crests we created, I painted those on-- remember it? Ah, what am I saying, of course you do...”

“Kunihiro.”

Horikawa immediately silences himself, biting the inside of his cheeks as he waits for further response. Was that a good ‘Kunihiro,’ or a bad ‘Kunihiro?’

“...This is really incredible!”

Kanesada finally looks down at Horikawa, with a broad grin encompassing his features as he gingerly picks up the earring meant to be his own.

“You seriously painted it on yourself? It’s so small, how the hell did you manage that? Ah, damn, why am I even asking? You’re talented as all hell, ‘course you can manage something cool like that! Hah, they’re even red--they match my everything!”

Internally, Horikawa breathes a sigh of relief. All his worrying had been for nothing, it seems, and he watches with a certain pride as Kanesada removes the little placeholder earring he was currently wearing to trade it out for the new, handcrafted one Horikawa had made for him. As expected, it does match his everything; even the ridiculously patterned lounge pants Kanesada was currently wearing.

“It’s not that great of a feat,” Horikawa is modest in his response, though he can’t really hide his excitement at the reception of his gift, “but since we’ve been best friends for a while now, I wanted to make something like that... Honestly, I was worried you’d think of it as too cheesy, but I’m glad you really like it.”

“I mean, it is kinda cheesy, but not in a bad way,” Kanesada chuckles softly, moving a hand to offer a ruffle to Horikawa’s medium locks. “It’s the right kind of cheesy. Y’know?”

“I... don’t really get what you mean, but as long as it’s good, then I’m glad.”

He laughs in unison with Kanesada, as the taller male pulls him in for a sort of half-hug; using one arm to do the actual hugging, whilst the other hand grinds against Horikawa’s head in a sort of noogie-motion.

“You weren’t supposed to get it, Kunihiro, that’s the point! Whatever, though, forget that. What I should be saying is... thanks, y’know? It’s a really nice gift. You better put in your own earring before you leave too, y’hear me? What the hell’s the point of your ‘best friend earrings’ if we’re not both wearing them?”

“You’ll have to give me back the box before I can do that, Kane-san.”

They laugh together again; bright, broad and joyous, as Horikawa adorns himself with his own earring, and the two exchange a real hug before Horikawa realizes that it’s getting late, the temperature is surely dropping wildly, and he stayed out a little bit longer than he had initially hoped to.

“I’ll see you soon, right, Kane-san? We’re studying together on Tuesday, aren’t we?”

“Of course-- wait, studying? I thought you said we were just going to get some coffee!”

Horikawa grins, ignoring that last remark as he offers a wave and starts to back away quickly. It’s best to make his escape now, before Kanesada tries to worm his way out of his studies. Winter break may be fun and all, but it was important to not fall behind, right?

“Goodnight, Kane-san! Merry Christmas!”

“Yeah, Merry Christmas, Kunihiro.

G’night.”
