Program Alum wins Chesley/Bumbalo Award for Playwriting

Graduate Musical Theatre Writing Alum Marcus Scott (Cycle 22) awarded the Chesley/Bumbalo Award for Playwriting. The Robert Chesley/Victor Bumbalo Foundation supports playwrights of Gay and Lesbian theatre.

Established in 1993 by Victor Bumbalo in playwright Robert Chesley’s honor, The Robert Chesley/Victor Bumbalo Foundation seeks to advance gay and lesbian theatre by honoring writers whose work is making a substantial contribution to our culture.

Thank you for sharing. I’m very surprised to see Screw and Tahiti here (although they are both interesting examples of Musiktheater, I would have considered them both squarely in the opera camp, in a way that I wouldn’t of anything else on the list (or the 3/4s of it I know).

yeah, no, i would definitely not argue that either of those are Broadway Musicals as opposed to operas (and ditto for Porgy, tbqh) — the Tisch Graduate Musical Theatre Writing Program is pretty explicit in their ideology that they Don’t Make A Distinction between operas and musicals — obviously the list skews heavily towards Broadway Musicals (as do most of the participants), but their goal is to foster an environment that’s open to both, and to things that sit somewhere between those two extremes. so yeah, they’re both totes operas, but i think they (and the other operas on the list) are there to emphasize that this program isn’t only about stuff that hopes to open on Broadway

ok but like also this e-mail is kind of adorable. they encourage you to wear jeans to the interview and “tattered flannel pj’s” in the practice rooms if that’s what gets your creativity going and they also say to call them if you’re “stuck, lost, sick, or scared” and i’m

uh, so, i got into the Graduate Musical Theatre Writing program at NYU/Tisch

HURT AT HOME

I wrote a song that was inspired by the characters of Franklin! The Musical, a piece I started writing a while back. With composer Patti Weinstein, we wrote this song. The song was ‘performed’ in a private cabaret at NYU’s Tisch. In the scene: Franklin, Quentin and Phaedra complain about the trials and tribulations of their private lives.
