Why Him? | Ransom Drysdale | Part 19

A/N: 3 PARTS LEFT!!! Last minute i changed up this chapter and completely deleted chapter 20 and re wrote it. It was just to improve the chapters and make them better. So i hope you enjoy

Claudia’s POV

I sit up in bed, immediately noticing that Ransom isn’t in sight. I decide to head downstairs to see where he is and as i reach the bottom of the stairs, i turn around to see him on the couch, watching TV.

“Good morning” i chirp as i strut over “Oh...morning” he mumbles.

Is he still upset with me? I sit down next to him.

“Is everything okay?” he shrugs. “Yeah i’m fine” something is clearly up but i decide to wave it off for now.

“So how about this, i cook for us later, nice romantic dinner for two” i turn his head to face me and he flashes me a smile, not a very convincing one though.

“Babe” why isn’t he responding?

“Sounds great but i got a text from the guys, i forgot that i made plans to have a couple of beers with them tonight. Mind if i head out later? I won’t be long i promise. An hour tops” i look down at my hands,

“Sure, just don’t be late. 7:30pm on the dot. Not a minute later Drysdale” he chuckles, pecking my lips quickly.

“Jack is making breakfast, you hungry?” i nod and he holds his hands out to help me off the couch.

I follow him into the kitchen. “Morning Jack” i greet and he replies with the same amount of enthusiasm. We eat breakfast and i let Jack know that he can go home early as i’ll be taking care of dinner, he nods before exiting to let us eat. He takes his food to the other room.

“So, are you on the menu tonight?” Ransom rests his hand on my thigh. “Babe” i roll my eyes. “Maybe” he winks at me as he places our dishes into the sink.

“Good, because i’ve had a real hankering for you lately” is he trying to turn me on? We flirt a little and then head upstairs to shower and get ready for the day.

The day is spent watching movies, distracting Ransom whilst he’s in his office and eating. Like, constantly.

“We really should take more pictures together?” i pick up the framed picture of us from our second date in New York.

“We should but for now i can just stare at you to remind myself of how sexy my girlfriend is” i sit down on his lap, my legs over his and the side of the chair, my arms wrapped around him.

“I meant more for memories. We’ve only got a couple of pictures. When i’m old and grey i want our grandkids to see all these pictures of us looking young and cool” he chuckles “grandkids huh?” i grin and rest my head in the crook of his neck.

“Shit, it’s 5:00pm” he checks his phone, i get off his lap and he rushes to his feet. “I best get going now to meet the guys. Can you call me a cab babe?” he asks and i nod. Lifting my phone up to dial the number.

“Right, you get cooking, i’ll be home at exactly 7:30pm doll. I love you” he kisses me and i wave him off.

Right, time to cook. I grab an apron and look around the kitchen to see what food is available to me. There’s pasta, steak, potatoes and salad. I’ll do steak with salad and potatoes then. Not that i have much choice but luckily i love steak.

I place both steaks in the pan, on a medium heat as i start to boil the potatoes and prepare the salad. With the salad done almost instantly, i focus on the potatoes and steak. Medium-rare i have it so i do the same for him. I check the time as i start to prepare the food onto two dishes. It’s 7:30, he’ll be here, i know he will.

10 minutes later, still no sign.

40 minutes later, nothing.

2 and a half hours later, no texts, no calls. I heat my food up and add some salad to the dish and i dig in. He’s clearly not going to show, might as well eat this food.

Once i finish up i click on his contact in my phone, pressing the call icon. Straight to voicemail. Where the hell is he?

I stand up and get a container to place his food into. I store it in the refrigerator. He can just have it when he decides to come home. Whenever that will be. I take my wine glass and phone and head into his office, sitting at his desk.

I start to call him again, voicemail. I look up and see the framed picture of the two of us, instantly smiling as i remember the date we were on but a frown soon replaces it. I can’t believe he stood me up. He promised he wouldn’t be late.

I rest my head on my arms on the desk and i drift off into a short slumber.

*ONE HOUR LATER*

I wake up, instantly checking my phone to see the time. It’s now 11:20pm.

There’s a text from Ransom. Sent 1 minute ago.

‘I’m waiting for you upstairs baby’ of course, he stands me up and instead of coming to find me to apologise, he thinks with his dick.

I stand up and head out, leaving my wine on the kitchen counter as i walk past to get to the stairs, ready to grill him. I rush up them and start my rant.

“I said 7:30, you didn’t even bother to call or text and now you want to have sex. I don’t get you Ran-” my jaw drops and my heart sinks.

There he is, on our bed. His ex-girlfriend straddling him. She’s kissing him. What the hell is this? they both turn to see me in the doorway. I can tell he’s off his face drunk. I turn around, running down the stairs and he follows.

“Claudia wait”

I storm into the kitchen to get my phone, shoving it into my bag. I find my coat draped over the couch, i pick it up and start putting it on as i make my way back over to where he’s stood.

“Doll, i’m sorry. Let me explain-” tears brim in my eyes and i can’t stop them from falling.

“I don’t want to hear it. Do NOT call me that. I’m not your doll. This must be why you were off with me this morning”

“What are you talking about, let me explain”

“God i’m so dumb” i laugh to myself

“I should’ve known you would mess up. You’re just a typical playboy, messing girls around for your own satisfaction. Just how i thought you would when i first met you. Do you get off on this huh? Hurting people. I don’t know what got into me, to believe i could trust you to change”

I shove past him, moving towards the front door. He grabs a hold of my wrist but i shake him off. I raise my hand and swipe it across his cheek, leaving a handprint, his face instantly turns red.

“Get the fuck off of me” i look him up and down

“I guess this is what happens when you finally let your guard down. Whatever this was, it’s over”

Ransom’s POV

I sip my fourth beer of the night and check the time 6:30pm, plenty of time.

“SHOTS” Eddie shouts and we all cheer, taking one in our hands and knocking them back on the count of 3. We do this a couple of times, causing my already tipsy state to turn fully drunk.

I check the time again to see it’s 9:30pm, shit. i’m late.

“I need to get home” i lean into Jason, speaking into his ear so he can hear me.

“Nah you’re not going anywhere, it’s time for more drinks man” he hands me a vodka and coke and i down it like it’s nothing. I really need to go home but i can barely walk straight. Claudia isn’t gonna be impressed.

It’s 11:00pm, i finish my drink and take one last shot before i spot her, my ex. Natalie.

“Hey stranger” she wraps her arms around my neck as she hugs me, i push her off.

“What do you want?” i scoff and she frowns. “Excuse me, you could be a little nicer” i roll my eyes. “I’ll never be nice to you. You’re toxic as fuck” i shove past her, saying goodbye to the guys since i’m gonna head home. She follows me out of the club.

“Wait, let’s share a cab” she calls out and i sigh “fine but you can pay for yourself” she gets in next to me and starts yapping away.

“So, i noticed you have a new girlfriend” i nod my head “I gotta give it to you, you did well. She’s gorgeous. But she’ll never be me Ransom and you can kid yourself all you like” i face away from her.

“That’s kinda the whole point Nat. I don’t want another girl like you. She’s everything you could never be” i slur as i rock in my seat. I’m so drunk and i feel so sick.

The driver pulls up outside my place and i pay him as i get out.

“You don’t miss me at all then? Not even a little” she leans her head out the window.

“Not at all. Go home Natalie” i take my time, walking to the front door. I don’t want to fall over. I let myself in and head upstairs.

“Claudia” i call out, no answer. “Baby” still no answer. I take my coat off and throw it onto the bed and when i turn around Natalie is stood in front of me. I must not have shut the front door properly.

“Get the fuck off Nat” i spit, making my way to the bathroom. When i get out, she’s still here.

She pulls me onto the bed and she straddles me, i try to push her off but my drunk state doesn’t allow it.

“I said 7:30pm, you didn’t even bother to call or text and now you want to have sex? I don’t get you Ran-” I turn my head to see Claudia in the doorway. FUCK.

“Claudia wait” i push Natalie off me and run after Claudia instantly.

She storms into the kitchen to get her phone, shoving it into her bag. She finds her coat draped over the couch and she picks it up, putting it on as she makes her way back over to me.

“Doll, i’m sorry. Let me explain-” i see the tears brimming in her eyes and she lets them fall.

“I don’t want to hear it. Do NOT call me that. I’m not your doll. This is why you were off with me earlier”

“What are you talking about let me explain”

“God i’m so dumb” she laughs to herself “I should’ve known you would mess up. You’re just a typical playboy, messing girls around for your own satisfaction. Just how i thought you would when i first met you. Do you get off on this huh? Hurting people. I don’t know what got into me, to believe i could trust you to change”

She shoves past me, moving towards the front door. I grab a hold of her but she shakes me off.

She raises her hand, slapping me across the face. Leaving a mark. God that hurt. Everything i feared happening that would destroy our relationship, is happening. I knew i’d mess this up eventually.

“Get the fuck off of me” she looks me up and down, a look of pure disgust across her face. “I guess this is what happens when you finally let your guard down. Whatever this was, it’s over”

Shit. I may not be able to think straight but i for sure think this is what heartbreak feels like. My heart sinks as she walks out the door. My mind is telling me to go after her but my heart is telling me to let her go because in the end, she’s right, i hurt people and tonight i’ve hurt the most important person in my life.

TFP Megatron, Knock Out and Predaking (in bipedal mode) watching horror movies on the Nemesis with their human s/o and getting amused, but also loving it, because she hugs their chassis tightly when tension builds up then squeaks and buries her face into their chassis when scary parts happen, please?

((A/N - Yeah, this is late… Happy New Year? Ah, sorry. Anyway, everyone is Bipedal except Predaking because I thought it fit his personality more. Enjoy!))

Megaton

(Movie Picked- Texas Chainsaw Massacre)

-He had no idea why he always agreed to such asinine activities- which only made his processor swirl with thoughts that maybe you had a bit more power over him that he would like to admit. He doesn’t want to say allowed how wrapped around your finger he truly is, because truth be told, of you snapped your fingers and told him to jump he wouldn’t even bother to ask how high because he would already know how high you wanted him to go. He worried that you were going to be the death of him and his empire- or what makes him shutter worse, that he could be the death of you. You didn’t seem to feel the same as he did in this aspect, you were fearless and secure in the ideals that he would always protect you from harm- which he would so long as he has a spark pulsing in his chest and thoughts racing in his processor. You looked up at him with those sparkly wide eyes of yours as you said his name and asked if he was ready to watch the “movie”- you were a big fan of media productions created by “Hollywood” and he had no idea why. Cybertronians didn’t really have anything like the copious amounts of media that humans seemed to possess, they had much more humble forms of entertainment that mostly consisted of historic storytellers and musicians. There wasn’t a big scope of entertainment for the masses beyond gladiator fights and binge drinking high grade until one passes out.

-Cybertronian entertainment seemed to be rather… destructive when comparing it to simple human fictional books and television shows, but it made sense when he thought about it logically, he couldn’t imagine you in body armor fighting to the near death while crowds of people sat in stands cheering and screaming to see some bloody action. You told him some cultures did indeed have displays like that, but it was a little different for humans than it was Cybertronians, after all ge has lost quite a few limbs in his gladiatorial days- it was nothing to replace his disconnected frame parts, but humans did not have that same luxury as once their parts were gone they were gone. That could be why you were so terribly squeamish about watching Starscream lose his arm or the idea of battles where he has lost nearly ever appendage on his frame- you always heaved as if you were going to eject the contents of your stomach and flinched as if someone was about to hit you. It was endearing to see you so concerned about his frame and form, and it was always quirky that no matter how many times he explained it to you that it wasn’t the same as a human losing an appendage, you still reacted the same way each and every time. You were so human, and he supposes that was what he liked about you so much, your endless empathy and your alien and foreign reactions to all of his simple and normal stories about his days on Cybertron.

-You were kind of a talker during a movie, not a loud talker or anything that would be deemed rude or such, but you liked to give your own commentary and opinions when necessary or when it was funny. The best part about this habit was that it was one Megatron picked up on pretty quickly, and you two would make silly quips about the scenarios the protagonists have found themselves in. He noticed your jokes and comments began to dwindle as the thrill of the horror of the movie began to set in as the main antagonist begins torturing one of the side characters. Megatron was grossly intrigued as he watched the antagonist begin to brutalize the side character in a gory mess, he heard you suck in air through your teeth as you turned around and placed your face against his chest plate from where you sat comfortably on his upper leg- you didn’t like scenes like this so you basically whined at him to let you know when it was done. If it were up to him the scene would never be over as there was something comforting and primal about how you would run to him if you were scared or uncomfortable. He cooed at you in a comforting way by letting hid engines rumble in a low hum as you clung to him while you physically winced at the sounds of the movie still playing behind you. Despite knowing it was fiction, despite knowing that no harm was happening to the humans on the screen, and despite always being so calm under pressure you still somehow let this kind of thing get to you. Honestly? He wouldn’t a damn thing about you- including this squeamish reaction, it showed him how passionate and loving you really were, and as he ran one of his claws through your slightly tousled hair he felt his spark tug in your direction because it fully believed you were the only being in this whole damn universe good enough for him.

Knockout

(Movie Picked- The Human Centipede)

-You didn’t even need to ask him twice! Knockout is fascinated by this aspect of human culture- the creation of fictional stories for entertainment wasn’t uncommon for their species, bit the fictitious elements were only ever implemented in old war stories and boring cautionary tales of always behaving like a good little Cybertronian Drone that The Council expected one to be. He loved how outlandish Fantasy stories can be and it filled this strange niche he never knew he had to watch action films where the protagonist runs around shooting guns and doing flips- sure he lives that kind of life being a Cybertronian Decepticon Rebel, but for humans there was more at stake than there was for him. Cybertronians were a very resilient species consisting of a mixture of biological and mechanical components- they could lose a limb, they could have their armor stripped off, they can even live with severe processor damage. Humans? Not so much. They get a big physical injury and that tends to be the end all be all for them, they were just creatures made up of biological organic tissues that were resilient against other organic things like bacteria and viruses, but when it came to physical injury that was rough for them. That’s what made movies so good, he likes watching different exaggerated scenarios of ways humans can potentially get hurt. That, and well, he likes spending time with you doing things that involved nothing but loafing around and relaxing.

-Sure, you both worked together, but it was work that is what took up most of your time together, it left little room for conversation beyond what was the task at the servo that needed to be completed. You were a treasure to work with in his optics as you never complained about the morality of his experiments or his deeds, unless of course he was trying to be cheeky with you and get a rise out of you. Primus, the way your little cheeks get red and puffy when he says something risque or when he would say something to get you angry as your eyebrows furrowed in disgust as you would scoff at him and call him all kinds of bad names. He remembers once asking about taking other people’s body parts and putting them on another person’s body like he had seen in some odd human movies, to which you got huffy with him and told him that was already a thing called a transplant and that it is actually a tool that has helped save thousands of lives, to which he replied with a wonderful smirk that what if he made a four armed six legged human. You sneered at the idea and told him that is weird stuff only creepy mad doctors do in Science Fiction films and over the top nonsensical Medical Dramas- and besides, you informed him a human like that wouldn’t live very long as you weren’t designed to have so many outer limbs, that person would suffer from necrosis in a matter of days as there wasn’t enough blood to sustain functioning limbs. Not once did you call him sick for suggesting to do such a terrible thing, but you did try to school him on human anatomy, and it was so endearing and cute- he loved to argue with you and he was pretty sure you liked arguing with him. Also, it was good to know you were down to make a crazy human monster- it just has to be anatomically correct.

-Human Cinema was a guilty pleasure of his in the same way human cars were, he can’t help but indulge from time to time- and this movie you picked is supposed to be so disgusting in its premise that he couldn’t wait to see your reaction. You both sat comfortably in his berth room since it was a rather quiet and secluded area of the ship, it was one of the best perks of being a Decepticon soldier- privacy, all of the Vehicons had to share a resting barracks, he shuddered at the thought of having to power down in a room with other bots that were jealous of his high rank. You couldn’t help but make snarky comments at people’s stupidity in the movie- but as soon as things got graphic and gory, you couldn’t help but shy away from the action on the screen. “Come now, I’m sure you’ve witnessed worse through your time as a medical professional?””Yes, but there is a difference between a bullet hole in a soldier and a human being disfigured!” He laughed as you buried your face on his chassis as the sounds of squelching could still be heard on the screen- he was basking in all of this, and he was definitely not going to let you love this down. He can see it now, you squirming and wriggling as he grilled you about how much things like this bothered you- he couldn’t wait to see your little face get all flushed as he would poke you with his digit while mocking you until you blow up in his face the way he likes so much. He has to admit though, even he could feel himself wincing at the premise of this movie- something about thinking about certain things moving through multiple human bodies made him gag on his own energon. Some humans have a twisted sense of what was entertaining.

Predaking

(Movie picked- The Conjuring)

-He was looking forward to your visit to his ”quarters” tonight, if you can call a dark and dank cage proper sleeping quarters, but despite his living condition and his reputation on this ship you still found his company more agreeable than the other power hungry mechs on this floating prison. Considering that the first time he met you he nearly stepped on you because he thought you were some kind of organic monster, well, it really says a lot about all the bots in the Decepticon ranks honestly. He loved your company more than he could put into words as you treated him less like a monster and more like a person- you were so kind to him as every time you lifted your small hands he did not fear a strike but rather looked forward to a kind stroke. His favorite part about your visits were the fact you always had an interesting story to tell him- you called them books, and they were merely printed words on flimsy pieces of material, but the things they told were very dramatic and impactful. You told him all kinds of interesting tales- things from kids getting lost in a magical closet to a story about a rich man who could never truly have the one thing he wanted and he had to learn the hard way money can’t buy everything. Sometimes he didn’t understand the concept of these stories, they were alien to him, but you were very patient with him and was able to explain everything to him when he inquired about it. It made him realize why you were on this ship in the first place- you were the Decepticons insight into how human culture functioned. You thought he didn’t notice, but he sees every time you get sad talking about the family you had to leave behind in order to save them from Megatron’s wrath, he couldn’t offer much comfort besides his presents- but he knows it isn’t enough. He wishes he could make you smile more, he liked it when you beamed at him with that glowing face that you have, but he knows he is no substitute to the warmth and love that a true pack can offer.

-You seemed extra excited tonight as you set up and odd looking device on his pen. He found it rather cute the way you spoke too fast for him to actually hear what your saying while you were excitedly bounding around his living space going on and om about some hallowed tradition your culture enjoys celebrating. He understood the words “we eat candy till we drop” and “we dress up and go to homes to get said candy”, an odd custom of you asked him his opinion, but this was your planet and he can say for sure Cybertronian customs were just as odd from your perceiving end. He was also kind of taken away as you told him this time of year also meant purposefully getting scared? You told him it’s all in good fun and everyone has a good laugh after the initial scare takes place- why would humans find joy in terrifying one another? You seemed to be excited about this…movie? Movie, this movie you were about to show him. You read stories to him all the time, both fictional and nonfictional, so this is sort of the same thing but visual? You peaked his curiosity that was for sure, so once you got tucked in next to him as he lay down to watch what it was you out on, he couldn’t help but chuckle to himself at how cozy you looked with a bowl full of sweets and a warm blanket to cuddle with since it does get rather cold out here on the deck of the ship.

-He didn’t understand what was going on with this story at all! He understood the premise that it was fiction, and yet, the story is leading him to believe this all really happened. He grew bored with the strange tale of “haunted” things- you’ve told him of the paranormal before, but this he just couldn’t wrap his brain around and he had stopped paying attention to the film long ago. However, you were so into it that anytime he shifted his body you yelped and jumped on the air as you clutched you hand to your chest- he apologized for startling you, but you just laughed and said that it helped with the atmosphere of the movie. Humans really are a strange species- seriously who thinks it’s fun to get scared? A particularly jumpy part of the movie made you quiver and turn your whole body around to grab onto him for safety as you winced when a loud scene was going on in the background. It made his spark leap a little as he saw this natural reaction coming from you- it filled him with a sinful sense of pride to know that your first fear instinct was to cling to him as your savior in an hour of need. ”I’ve seen this movie so many times and it still gets to me! What did you think?” You asked as you stood up to stretch and clean up the mess that was strewn all across the floor of his pen, he just gave a huff in response as he laid back down to rest as he walked you walk around and clean up. “That much, huh?” you laughed “I’ll get something you like next time, big guy.”

Part V - Surgery

“I’m embarrassed.”

Castiel’s eyes snapped to his as Dean shoved another bite of his burger into his mouth and said, “Vis ef fo gud.”

“I take it you like it?”

Liked it? He wanted to make love to that damn slab of meat. Castiel had hand-made and grilled burgers for them, their second—technically, third—date starting off with a dinner that put his cooking to shame. Rather than put words to those thoughts, Dean simply moaned into his food again.

“Sounds like it,” Castiel said with a laugh. “Anything in particular you wanted to do this evening? Only idea I had was to watch a movie.”

Dean nodded, thinking of several in the moment. He swallowed his food and said, “I have a few in mind.”

“Perfect,” Castiel replied with a small smile, one that Dean has seen before. He wondered how often Castiel smiled like that at other people.

“You’re staring,” he said. “Is there something on my face?”

Dean shook his head as he averted his eyes, returned to his plate. “Uh, no. Just… spacing out. Long day.”

“That might have been my fault,” Castiel replied with a grimace. “Sent you a few new patients today.”

“Keeps me employed,” Dean said after another bite of his burger. “I’m not complaining.”

“Good, because I’ll have more for you next week, too,” he said. “My surgery schedule for the next month is quite full.”

“Oh great,” Dean drawled with a roll of his eyes. “Okay, no more work talk. Plans this weekend?”

Dean swore Castiel hesitated, a brief consideration of his words. But then he spoke, confident and steady once more. “I’m in the middle of remodeling the master bath upstairs. Probably work on that most of the weekend.”

“Oh? Need a hand? You know I’m good with mine,” Dean jested, but when Castiel’s brow shot to his hairline, Dean balked. “I mean, with construction. You know. My backyard. I’m…”

“Sure,” Castiel interrupted with a coy smile. “I could use the help. I’ll show you around the house after dinner. Then we can hit up that movie.”

“Sounds good,” Dean agreed.

Dinner continued, talk of plans for the spring and summer extending the meal well after their plates were clean. They concluded with a pecan pie that Castiel had made, much to Dean’s delight. He ate half of it before he stopped himself and apologized for being a glutton. Castiel shrugged with his small smile again, then motioned he follow him into the kitchen.

“Ready for the grand tour?” Castiel asked as he put their plates in the sink.

“Now I’m really embarrassed,” Dean replied, “Your cooking is far superior and you’re a better host. I didn’t even think to show you around my place.”

The warmth of Castiel’s hand enveloped his, and Dean fell silent. A long moment passed before Castiel spoke. “It’s fine, Dean. I didn’t take any offense. Let’s go. I’ll show you the disaster that is this bathroom.”

“Lead the way,” Dean said, and Castiel set out.

The living room gave way to the first level bedroom hallway. A closed door was passed by, Castiel declaring it a complete mess, filled with his junk, and that one day he should sort through it all. Dean found that strange. Most people put their useless junk in a garage or attic or basement. But spare bedroom?

“Silly,” Castiel finished. “I… don’t want you to get the wrong idea. I’m an organized person. Most of the time. Some parts of my life are a little messy yet.”

“I get it,” Dean said as Castiel turned back for the stairs. “We all have messy parts to our lives.” The words were out of his mouth before Dean understood what he meant. He thought of John and Sandra—not that they were the messy parts of his life, quite the opposite—but they were a part he wanted to protect. And when Castiel stared ahead at nothing as he paused at the base of the stairs, Dean wondered. How messy, exactly, was Castiel’s life? Another long moment lingered until Castiel’s thoughts seemed to clear and he spoke. “Ready to see this bathroom?”

“You’re building this up to be quite the reveal,” Dean said as Castiel started up the steps. He followed, asking, “Why are you remodeling it?”

“Mold, mostly,” Castiel stated. “House is over a hundred years old and nobody knew the last time the bathroom had been rehabilitated.” At the top of the stairs he turned into the only room across from a lofted space. “I was only going to replace the shower stall until I found the mold.”

Dean hesitated at the door, stuck at the threshold. “Is this…”

Castiel turned back to him and, with an incredulous quirk to his brow, shook his head. “What’s wrong?”

He crossed the threshold, a tentative step that revealed the entire room. “Your room?” he asked eyeing the bed. “Your…”

“My bed, yes,” Castiel replied. “Are you… Dean, are you nervous about being in my room?”

As ridiculous as it sounded coming from him, yes, Dean’s nerves had unraveled in a matter of seconds. He had imagined being in Castiel’s room under different circumstances. What those circumstances were, he had no clue. After a failure of willpower, succumbing to his base desires? When he came clean about his past, his children? When he figured out whatever it was Castiel hid from him?

“Dean?”

Castiel stood before him, so close, Dean smelled the carpenter’s saw dust and medical soap emanating from him. Warm, too, Castiel radiated a heat that enveloped him. The dizzying combination left Dean speechless, and so, instead, he reached out for Castiel’s shoulder.

“Are you okay?”

Dean nodded with a deep breath. “Show me the bathroom?”

Castiel took his hand and crossed the room with him in tow. “Voila.”

Bare bones, the entire bathroom had been stripped to its framing. Subflooring and beams were all that made up the entire space but for a huge window in the far wall over the tub.

“It is a mess,” Dean stated.

“It’s… a work in progress,” Castiel retorted. “I’m working on the shower first. Once that’s in, the tub and toilet are next. Then the cabinets and counters. Then the floor last. Heated, too.”

“Oh, fancy,” Dean commented. “What’s the water pressure like?”

Castiel sighed. “It was abysmal. House had old lead pipes that I had replaced. Now it’s fantastic,” Castiel motioned to the space where the shower would be, plumbing roughed in. “I’d show you but…”

Dean laughed a nervous chuckle at that. “You want to show me the water pressure in your shower?”

Pink slashed across Castiel’s nose as he stuttered a response. “I mean… sure. Some day. When it’s done.” He rubbed the back of his neck as he averted his gaze, seeming to search the ceiling for something better to say.

Dammit. He’d intended for a casual dinner, nothing more than time to get to know each other. He’d made that much clear last week. But Castiel’s unintentional flirting had bolstered Dean’s confidence, and so, he took a chance. A smooth slip of his hand into Castiel’s drew his attention from the bathroom. With his focus, Dean lead him back into the bedroom until he felt the bed at the back of his thighs. Castiel followed without much convincing, his devious smile matching Dean's. When he licked his lips, Dean indulged, every concern forgotten.

Their lips met in a rush, eager and insistent. Castiel responded to Dean’s every move, each touch mimicked, each swipe of his tongue matched, and each roll of his hips mirrored. With one hand at the small of his back and the other in his hair, Dean enveloped Castiel in an embrace so close, the world faded away, consisting only of them. Oh, how glorious a world it was; strong arms that reached for more, breathless gasps filled with lust, and subtle moans that encouraged his desires.

But that world shattered the second Dean tried to lean back for the bed. Castiel parted from him in a sudden burst of babble about second-thoughts, hands running through his hair. Dean slumped to a seat on the bed, unbalanced by Castiel’s rapid change of mind.

“Cas,” Dean started, but he continued to ramble incoherent half-sentences, “Cas!”

Castiel wheeled about, eyes wide and mouth gaping as though shocked to find Dean still there. A long second dragged before he shook his head, then spoke. “Sorry. I…” he paused, hands raised in confusion. “I freaked out. I thought I crossed a line last week. And now we’re here, doing this awkward dance again.”

“Cas, it’s fine,” Dean excused. “I get it. I… I’m not sure what I want. I drew a line and I crossed it. It’s confusing and it’s not fair to you, especially when you are so sure of yourself—”

“No, Dean, I’m not,” Castiel stated. “I’m really not. And not because of you.” He paused again, then eyed the spot on the bed beside Dean.

Before he had a chance to say anything else, Castiel crossed the space between them and sat beside Dean. He gathered what willpower remained as the warmth of Castiel’s hand enveloped his and a muscled thigh sat flush to his own. He remained silent in the wake of that sudden connection. Son of a bitch, he hoped he hadn't ruined the entire evening.

“I like you, Dean,” Castiel started. “A lot. Hell, more than most people I've met lately. It's been a lonely couple of years.”

“I'm… sorry to hear that,” Dean said. “Good looking guy like you with a giant brain and a big heart must be intimidating to most folks.”

That grabbed his attention. “I can't figure out why you’re single. Compliments like that are few and far between, and you give them so freely,” he paused, reconsidering Dean's words. “It was a compliment, right?”

“Yes,” Dean said as he squeezed his hand. “A much deserved compliment.”

“Okay you can stop—”

“Because you're an amazing cook, too.”

“Sure, but—”

“And an excellent host.”

“Well—”

“With great taste in Scotch, I peeked at your liquor cabinet.”

“How dare—”

“And incredibly smooth hands for a guy that does his own carpentry.”

“Alright, I get it!” Castiel shouted. “You’re still not getting in my pants tonight.”

Dean's jaw dropped as he feigned offense. “And here I was just trying to give you more compliments because you said you get so few.”

The pink hue of embarrassment colored Castiel's nose once more, then spread to his cheeks as he averted his eyes. Dean tried and failed to contain his laughter, but when Castiel shook with his own silent laughter, he leaned back into his full belly laugh.

“Alright,” Castiel said through his smile. “Let's keep the make out sessions to a minimum. For now.”

Dean nodded. “I’d like that. Bare minimum.”

Castiel smiled once more, but it lasted a mere second and never touched his eyes. That look, so full of regret, broke Dean’s heart. Without another thought, he pulled Castiel into him and placed a gentle, unassuming kiss on his lips.

Tension drained from his shoulders as Dean held him close and Castiel melted into him. Fuck, he felt good. No, better than good. Castiel, so pliant in his embrace, enthralled Dean. He pushed no further, hand yet entwined with his, and he enjoyed the kiss for what it was. A simple—long—kiss.

They parted together, timed as if Castiel could read his mind. When Castiel laughed through his nose, Dean shoved him away.

“Alright, enough of this chick flick shit, let’s go watch Expendables.”

Castiel’s cackling laughter followed him from the bedroom, and at that moment, Dean vowed to make him laugh like that every day for the rest of his life.

Amazing Spider-Man: Renew Your Vows Vol 2 #5 Review

SPOILERS: I loved this issue. I actually laughed and smiled whilst reading it and then put it down feeling upbeat and happy.

I cannot express how nice it is to feel that way about a new issue of Spider-Man.

Story

It’s Family Fun Night at the Parker household and to the delight of Annie, and the despair of her exhausted parents, they head out to Bouncin’ Bunny, a restaurant that’s ‘Fun 4 kidz’. Unfortunately the restaurant is next door to a bank that the Sandman and his goons have targeted for a robbery.

Meanwhile young Normie Osborn is told by one of his scientists that the drone he recovered from the Regent’s headquarters was handmade by someone with immense technological proficiency. When his scientist proposes they recruit the designer of the drone for ‘Project G’ Normie rejects the idea since the project is intended to hurt Spidey so he’d be unlikely to help out.

After ordering the components of the drone be traced (and any images of Annie be sent to him immediately...I really hope he hasn’t hit puberty yet) Normie departs for an interview with Betty Brant. Normie mentions not seeing Betty since his father’s funeral and slightly grills her over the stories she wrote about him. Betty though reaffirms that Harry was her friend but a complicated man, citing the appointment of Normie, a mere 10 year old, as head of the family businesss. Normie rebuffs that he’s been groomed for the role since birth and that it is his duty to extend the Osborn legacy to a new generation.

Over at Bouncin’ Bunny Peter, MJ and Glory lament the loss of grown up activities in the light of their parenthoods whilst Annie and Jermaine play in amusement areas. Simultaneously though Sandman and his goons break into the bank’s vault. Out of the blue Annie gets a vision of her Dad fighting the goons and excitedly informs her parents. Peter checks out the bank and begins battling the goons but is thrown off when Sandman attacks. Whilst one of Sandman’s goons sneaks off with something from a safety deposit box, Annie and MJ burst onto the scene to lend a hand.

On Peter’s orders the three of them completely cover Sandman in webbing, trapping him. MJ mentions that she doesn’t recall Peter doing this before to which he remarks he never had a team backing him up. Back at Normie’s office the goon that got away hands Normie the safety deposit box containing some kind of computer chip. Through their conversation we learn that the entire heist was orchestrated by Normie to cover the theft of the chip.

The chip, he explains, is a piece of next generation technology which forms the final piece of a puzzle spelling the end of Spider-Man!

Review

Well this issue was utterly delightful.

In many ways this is what we should be getting as the norm for the series. Down to Earth/street level adventures mixing in domestic normal life stuff and crime busting superhero action and a subplot bubbling away to the side.

The plot was simplistic (evoking silver age Spider-Man stories) in this regard but nevertheless effective. You get the idea Conway wanted respite from a larger scale storyline and to let reader’s catch their breaths before we dive into the next major arc. So we get what amounts to a day in the life of the Parker family in this new status quo. This is refreshing for the series as a whole but also if you’ve been following the mainstream title and it’s large scale global setting. In fact Conway does a little meta commentary on that subject when he has Spidey claim how he’s missed some old school small scale bank robberies.

Of course as always the highlights of the story are the normal life stuff. The hyperactivity of Annie, the exhaustion/frustrations of her parents, the pandering to their child’s whims, the chastising of Annie’s misbehaviour, the nostalgia for their pre-parenthood days and yet their appreciation of being parents. It all fits so organically in with Spider-Man’s world and as an extension of Peter’s life story. Plus it is executed pretty believably.

In many ways I find it reminiscent of ‘Our Town’ a story published Superman #7 by Peter J. Tomasi. In that story Clark, Lois and their son Jonathan go to a town fair and interrupt a small scale crime.

This issue employs a somewhat similar format but obviously prioritizes the Parker family as a unit more. Annie is arguably the star of the issue as it is her who motivates the family’s trip and involvement with the crime. The issue also does a neat job of advancing the ongoing subplots of the series in fairly organic ways, such as Annie’s continued visions and confiding of them to her parents.

The other subplot of course is Normie Osborn and here there is intrigue and problems in equal measure. On the one hand we finally learn that ‘Project G’ more than likely has something to do with Normie’s Goblin connections and that it is explicitly part and parcel of some revenge scheme on his part against Spider-Man. We also confirm that Harry Osborn is dead in this universe which means Normie’s life experiences are probably similar to what we saw leading up to Spectacular Spider-Man #200. All of which makes his potential discover of the Parkers’ identities’ via the drone all the more alarming.

On the flipside though...seeing a little kid act so in charge and villainous is at least starting to ge really, really silly. I mean...not AS silly as Spider-Man and MJ letting their even younger daughter fight crime but silly nevertheless.

On that point this issue did slightly address that problem by having Peter go alone to address the crisis at hand rather than Annie coming along automatically. And her involvement was integral to the resolution of the plot with Sandman.

Speaking of Sandman there were a few issues with him. Sandman is one of Spider-Man’s more underrated adversaries for two big reasons. Firstly his powerset is more versatile than people give him credit for and secondly as a character he’s actually fairly multifaceted. He began life as a thug but gradually we learned there was a softer side to him and he didn’t like hurting civilians needlessly. Eventually he was fleshed out as something of a blue collar kind of guy, someone not that dissimilar to Peter, Uncle Ben or the salt of the Earth folks in their neighbourhood, but he just didn’t stick on the straight and narrow. Later on though he evolved into a reformed criminal and even served as a genuine hero more than once, most notably with Silver Sable.

In contrast to all that this story plays him as...a dumb crook.

Now look, there is no violation of continuity in doing that. This is an alternate universe after all. It’s more that...there could’ve been more to the character than that. Even if his role was the same in the story he could’ve been fleshed out more and exhibited more nuance than what we got, or at least been played as less obviously stupid. I’m not saying this killed the story but it is also goes beyond a nitpick because in Renew Your Vows volume 1 even Slott gave us a more nuanced rendition of the character.

I nevertheless appreciated the way he was defeated, a nice use of team work there. It doesn’t strictly speaking make much sense as Sandman would probably escape their webbing, but then again if he really is as dumb as he seems then maybe he couldn’t have thought of a way out of that situation (kind of like he couldn’t back in ASM #4).

The only other things of relevance to say is that Nate Stockman is no Ryan Stegman but he does do a decent job as artist. If God forbid Stegman wanted out of this series then Stockman would be a very good replacement. His artistic style evokes some of Stegman’s creating a degree of cohesion that doesn’t alienate the readers.

Over all a wonderfully tight day-in-the life done in one issue, which makes accepting the Spider-Family set up easier than in previous issue.

For that, and because there is little honestly wrong with the issue I’m giving this an A-.

P.S. The ‘language’ line in the middle of the book was pretty funny. In fact there were quite a few funny lines in this, including a new rendition of the 1960s Spider-Man theme song.

1971 Dodge Dart: Destiny and Determination

After a 22-year journey, Bill Hartman finally has the big-block Dart he’s always wanted.

Bill Hartman grew up immersed in all things Mopar, because his father was the service manager at Springfield Dodge in Springfield, Pennsylvania, in the 1960s and 1970s. The family always had a shiny new loaner car in the driveway so Bill was exposed to a wide variety of different Chrysler products throughout his childhood, but it was actually his brother-in-law, not his dad, who got him hooked on muscle cars. “My father was predominantly a light-footed driver,” he recalls, “so my first hammer-down ride came at age 12 in my brother in-law’s 1968 440-powered GTX. I had helped him install new motor mounts and Lakewood Traction Action bars on the GTX. We stopped by a shop in South Philly to have one of the motor mounts shaved, and I was standing behind the GTX when my brother-in-law moved it in order to let another car exit the garage. He hammered it and black-tracked away from me. That was it! After seeing the GTX rip down the street like that I was hooked!”

Following high school, Bill joined the U.S. Air Force and spent the next 24 years wrenching on KC-135 Stratotankers, C-130 Hercules and B-1B Bombers in support of our nation’s freedom. In the early 1980s, while stationed at Altus Air Force Base in the small farming community of Altus, Oklahoma, he spotted a clean 1971 Buick GS 455 on a used car lot. “While some might consider this a momentary lapse in judgment given my strict Mopar upbringing, I couldn’t walk away from the GS sitting there on the lot just begging to be bought.”

The Buick was fun, but not surprisingly, it was only a detour in Bill’s journey to find the right Chrysler product. Fast-forward to June of 1997 in Abilene, Texas, where he was stationed at Dyess Air Force Base. A small ad in the local paper for a 1971 Dodge Dart Swinger project car caught his attention. “The car was rough,” he recalls, “with just an engine core and transmission sitting in the framerails, driveshaft, and steering column in the trunk, trashed seats, boxes of parts sitting beside it, no exhaust, a ’74ish front bumper, a junk rear end in the car, and so on.”

It took a few visits to look at the car before vivid memories of another Dart from decades earlier compelled him to pull the trigger. “The inspiration that kept calling me back to look at the Dart stemmed not only from my family’s Mopar ties, but a vivid memory from my high school cruising days in the 1970s on MacDade Boulevard in Delaware County, and a revered 1970 B5 Blue Swinger that was upgraded from its former 340 to become a 440 big-block Dart. Those words spoke loudly in terms of street credit in those days, and hearing all the chatter about it has stuck with me to this day.”

The first thing Bill and his wife, Diane, did after getting the Dart home was evict a family of rats living inside it. They then gutted the interior to get rid of the odor the unwanted rodents left behind, and began accumulating parts for the planned resurrection. While deployed to Maxwell Air Force Base in Alabama in 2000, Bill stumbled across a 1971 Dodge Demon in a salvage yard. “It was literally just the shell and framerails sitting on the ground with only one removable aspect remaining — the perfectly straight front bumper and its mounts that I needed!” He also needed a Dodge emblem for the deck lid, which wasn’t being reproduced at the time, and managed to find that at a salvage yard in Roswell, New Mexico, while there doing some certification at the Bombardier Flight Test Center. He later bought an entire front grille assembly from an internet auction site. “The parts were in Dwight, Kansas, and ironically, at the time of purchase, we had what was to be our final military assignment in hand and were preparing to relocate from Abilene to Wichita, Kansas, so rather than ship the fragile grille and risk breakage, the seller was kind enough to hold on to it for a few months until we moved there, and I could make the 120-mile trek north to fetch the grille.”

In 2003, the still-disassembled car and growing parts collection went with them to that new assignment at McConnell Air Force Base in Wichita. Three years later Bill retired from the Air Force and spent the next several years at GE Engine Services supervising overhaul of CFM-56 and CF-34 TurboFan Jet Engines and at Bombardier’s Flight Test Center as a project engineer, helping facilitate certification tests on newly designed Bombardier aircraft.

Some 10 years after buying the Dart, Bill finally had the time to work on it in earnest. First, the car went to Autobody Connection in Rose Hill, Kansas, where Vern Hammond’s team “transformed its outer appearance from barn find to barn stormer.” Though originally B5 blue, the Dart was painted black early on. Bill knew he wanted to return it to blue, but was indecisive regarding the exact shade. After much debate, he opted for 2003 PT Cruiser Electric Blue Pearl for the body and 2002 PT Cruiser Bright White for the tail stripe. Besides doing a masterful job with the body and paintwork, Autobody Connection also did the work needed to install a full complement of Auto Meter gauges in the dash and an RCI 15-gallon fuel cell.

After getting the car back from Autobody Connection, Bill spent the next four years putting it all back together with mostly stock parts, and in September 2011 he started the newly rebuilt 440 for the first time. It roared to life and put an ear-to-ear grin on Bill’s face, but the joy was short-lived as he discovered the 727 automatic, which had come with the car and was represented to be in excellent working condition, was in fact fried inside. After he and his wife pushed the Dart back into their garage, he removed the transmission and turned it over to friend Mark Wise, who expertly rebuilt it.

Following reinstallation of the 727, the Hartmans enjoyed their reborn Dart very much, driving it to many shows and cruises in the Wichita area. The following year, Bill noticed the engine wasn’t quite as peppy as it used to be and traced the problem to some worn lobes on its Mopar Performance cam. “With problems come opportunities to upgrade,” he reasons, “so a Comp Cams Retrofit Hydraulic Roller Cam, Comp Roller Rockers, and Howard Hydraulic Rollers were installed in place of the stock parts.”

In 2016, Bill made another significant upgrade to his engine’s performance. “I had been closely following Andy Finkbeiner’s finely detailed dyno assessments sorting out a new line of Trick Flow Specialties Aluminum Cylinder Heads at his business, AR Engineering. After concluding these are a great set of heads, Santa, in the form of my wife, Diane, was gracious enough to drop a pair of the Trick Flow Specialties PowerPort 240 heads down the chimney for Christmas, and the Dart’s long-standing breathing problems were eviscerated once and for all. Trick Flow’s new line of aluminum cylinder heads were designed specifically for big-block Mopar’s and hands down were indeed a great power adder!”

With the engine running great and making the level of power he wanted, Bill turned his attention to the car’s brakes. In 2018, he replaced the OEM setup using a Wilwood disc brake conversion kit that put four-piston calipers and 11-inch steel rotors on all four corners. Never one to sit still for long, the next project on his radar screen is installation of a six-point rollbar and RCI five-point harness. Both of these safety upgrades will be done in preparation for some much-anticipated drag racing.

The Hartman’s 22-year odyssey with their Dart Swinger has had many challenges, but the hard work and determination has paid off. The car is a wonderful reminder of Bill’s childhood growing up surrounded by Chryslers, courtesy of his father’s job at Springfield Dodge, and his teenage years hanging with all of his car buddies. They continue driving it to local shows and cruises, and get a great deal of enjoyment from sharing the car with others. “With Darts having sported fairly high production numbers in the early 1970s, the car starts a lot of conversations at car shows with people whose parents had Darts, or it was their first car, and those who had 340 Darts, or Demons, etc. Many key in on the Swinger emblems and the trademark sunflower accenting the “i” and how well that fit the ’70s era. The Dart is a trip to drive and gets its fair share of attention with lots of waves, thumbs up, picture grabs, and gas station conversations.”
