Avantree C51 Bluetooth Transmitter Review
The Avantree C51 is a compact Bluetooth transmitter that allows you to add wireless streaming capabilities to any device with a USB Type C port. I tested out the C51 to evaluate its performance.
Key Features
【PERFECT PAIRING】Our Bluetooth 5.0 audio transmitter specially designed for use with the Nintendo Switch as well as providing a perfect solution to enable Non-Bluetooth PC/Other Devices to use bluetooth headphones and speakers. Get wireless freedom and never be bound again!
【EASY TO USE】Plug and Play for your convenience with an LED indicator, connection setup is simple utilizing the Nintendo switch USB C port directly for portable use. Includes USB C to A cable, so you can plug it to the Switch dock for home use.
【NO LIP-SYNC DELAY】Supports the aptX low latency and FastStream codec to virtually eliminate audio-visual lag making the C51 an ideal choice for playing games. For best results, use with aptX low latency or FastStream codec supporting headphones, e g Avantree Aria, ANC031 or ANC032.
【NO BATTERY HASSLE】The battery-free C51 receives power directly from your Nintendo Switch. Only drawing minimal power from your Switch, it is safe from being Bricked. Simultaneously charge your Nintendo Switch thru the C51 while in use for unlimited power.
【Music Stream or Gaming Chat】Simply double click the MFB to switch C51 to call mode. The LED will flash white quickly. For simultaneously stream STEREO voice and music while gaming, please use Avantree FastStream supported headphones.
Design and Setup
The C51 has a slim and portable design making it easy to pair with laptops, tablets, and smartphones. It charges via USB C and includes a short USB C to C cable.
Setup only takes a moment – simply plug the C51 into any USB C port to instantly transmit audio over Bluetooth. I connected it to my USB C laptop and was streaming music in seconds.
Bluetooth Performance
Pairing my Bluetooth headphones took just a tap, and the transmission range held up impressively at over 30 feet without dropouts. Audio sound quality was excellent thanks to support for the efficient aptX and AAC codecs.
Watching video on my laptop, the audio and video stayed perfectly in sync thanks to the low latency transmission. No noticeable lag at all.
Customer review
Q: Does this work with ipads?
A: iPad has bluetooth built in, you don’t need this
Q: Does this work with iPad Pro?
A: iPad has bluetooth built in, you don’t need this
Q: By any change can this be used on my keyboard to make it wireless?
A: If you look for a default implementation the answer is no. This will only work as a USB sound device to the pc, Nintendo switch and Android. Bluetooth pairing is on its own board. To pair Bluetooth you need to use the button on the board, and have the earphones in to pairing mode so the 2 pair each other’s. As you cannot choose the pairing device from keyboard, I doubt you can connect it to a keyboard. On the other hand it is also doubtful that the keyboard input can be transmit to the computer through it.
Q: Can you use when the switch is docked?
A: Just tested this real quick, can confirm it works.
Q: Has anyone used with google stadia ?
A: I couldn’t get it working. It works with my phone, a pixel 3 xl. And I can get the pixel wired earbuds to work with the stadia controller. But this headset + stadia controller doesn’t work.
Q: Does this device work as a transmitter with Airpods? Other brands do not provide a means to control volume in the transmitter mode.
A: Airpods work, but volume control is from the device not the transmitter
If you need to stream audio from a TV, stereo or other optical source, the C51 won’t work and you’ll need a transmitter with optical input like the Avantree Priva III. But for a fuss-free USB audio transmitter, the C51 gets the job done.

Chapter Five: What the Q?!
“Hello and welcome to What the Q!? I’m Georgie Barker.”
“And I got outvoted on the name.”
“He loves it. He just pretends not to.”
“It doesn’t make sense!”
“With me is my love and co-host Jonathan Sims and today for the first time we’re doing a special Q and A as a Patreon reward to tied you over during our summer break.” Georgie grinned at Jon and leaned against him. He rolled his eyes but pressed against her as well. “We asked for your questions on Twitter.”
“@WTGcast.”
“And our email.”
“wtgpod@gmail.”
“And of course our Patreon.”
“Patreon.com/whattheghost.”
“He learned it all himself.”
“I’m not computer illiterate despite the memes out there to the contrary.”
“Why don’t we get to some questions. Shall I read one out for you?”
“Let me guess.”
“Hm?” Georgie looked up from her tablet that contained all the questions she had selected for the show.
Jon had that intense look he’d get sometimes. “Why are you so staunchly skeptical about some things and not about others?” He offered.
“I’m sure that’s in there somewhere. Did you want to address it now?”
“Hm…” Jon hesitated. Georgie marked the time as a potential cut. Jon didn’t really like getting personal with strangers. When their podcast started climbing the charts on Itunes and he started getting attention directed at him he almost walked away from the entire thing. There was a lot of long nights and conversations before he agreed to keep going. The Q and A was really a bit of a build up. They were getting invitations to conventions which would be essential for their brand and for funding, and their online presence was growing. They’d even have to start hiring other people on soon. But it would be hard for Jon. Sometimes she wanted grab him by the shoulders. Tell him not to be afraid. That it was holding him back.
But that wasn’t fair.
“Why don’t we go with your first question and work up to it.” Jon said. “I do have an answer but… maybe let’s not start there?”
“No problem, Jon.” She squeezed his hand and lifted her tablet. “Our first question is from Elfgrunge. They ask: Why do you use a fake accent for the show?” It took all of Georgie’s will to keep a straight face.
There was a long moment of dead air. Jon gave her a look.
“The people want to know Jon.”
He gave a soft groan. “I don’t know how this rumour started. My accent is real. This is how I talk.”
“You do lean into a bit of a crypt keeper vibe for the intro.”
“Oh yes,” Jon nodded in agreement. “That’s for effect, but it’s more about pitch than my accent.”
“Confirmed. Jon is a citizen of the United Kingdom and speaks like a local. Or at least that’s what he claims. Why don’t you ask the next question?”
He smiled at her as he took the tablet.
“Desert-Lurker has a question for you, Georgie: have you always been into horror? Do you have a favourite horror writer?”
Georgie laughed. “Well… it’s funny because what me and Jon are doing… it is in the category of a horror podcast. Creepy stories every two weeks about things that are unbelievable, but I’m not sure if horror is exactly the right word for it.”
“A lot--the majority I’m fairly certain are just stories,” Jon added raising his eyebrows to see if his interjection was alright. She nodded.
“From Jon’s perspective at least,” She agreed. “But our goal is to research and share real people’s stories and experiences with the supernatural. I know we get a lot of comments that we’re writing the stories we share ourselves and Jon and I are just doing a bit, but we aren’t. People send us stories, we research the ones that interest us and share our research with all of you. That said I used to be into horror comics as a kid, but … fell out of it. Swamp Thing was a favourite, and Hellblazer. Constantine was actually pretty big for me thinking about it. Seeing a bisexual character in the early 2000s was rare. But… yeah I’m not interested in the horror genre as an escape anymore.”
Jon was nodding along with her story. He passed her back the tablet.
“Let’s go to a question for both of us. This one comes from Mothman-is-my-Dad. Great username: How do you decide which submissions and stories to go forward with? Do you go in order or do you have a process?”
“Oh, that’s a good question,” Jon said approvingly.
“Well, to start with we do not make a show for every story sent in.” Georgie said.
“Yes,” Jon agreed. “That would be a lot of work, and… while I have certain reservations…--”
“Are you still mad about Ghost spider?”
“Don’t talk to me about Ghost spider.-- while I disparage some of the stories sent in, the ones that we don’t record. Well.” His voice dropped disapprovingly. “You can only imagine.”
Georgie made an exaggerated nod. She was the one looking through all those emails after all. The things people would send them. Yikes. She continued:
“I look through the submissions and weed out the ones that aren’t viable. Sometimes it’s because it’s obviously fake, sometimes because there isn’t enough information for us to get started. Even then we have a very large backlog of stories that we’d like to look into.”
Jon hummed. “We put them into categories: does this story have potential to be true? Are there ways we can do follow up? Will our listeners want to hear about it?”
“Will Jon want to research it?”
“Well…”
“Not that I slack being producer, sound mixer, and social media head of our little company, but Jon does the majority of information gathering and research. I’ll give him a few with potential and he’ll choose one. We go from there. Sometimes he flat out refuses.”
“I--yes…some of them just don’t… it’s a gut thing.”
Georgie snorted.
“What?”
“It’s just funny for you to say that.”
“Fair enough.”
“And, just so we’re clear. He might whinge about it, but he did approve Ghost Spider enough to do the research.”
“There were elements strange enough to warrant investigation. Honestly though I should have put my foot down the very idea of it--But…yes. I’ll take the story and look into any provided evidence and hand off my findings to Georgie. We build the episode around that.”
“And then the magic happens,” Georgie finished with a one handed jazz hand for Jon’s benefit. He smiled and plucked the tablet from her.
He snorted reading over the question.
“Georgie, Raspberrysundae wants to know: Who’s the goodest boy? Jon or the Admiral?”
Georgie grinned. “Jon comes in second place for sure.”
“I can accept that. He’s a tough cat to beat.”
“To be fair, Jon would sell me up the river for the Admiral, it’s all mutual.”
Maybe because he heard his name a paw was suddenly poking under the doorway. Georgie and Jon burst out laughing. Immediately Jon went to open the door. Georgie noted the time for the recording although she thought she might keep it in since it was a bit of a behind the scenes episode.
“See, look at you babying him. No cats in the studio.”
“He’ll be good.” Jon said scooping the large cat into his arms and bringing him over. Georgie gave the Admiral a scritch on the head.
“He’s purring all over the equipment.”
“Question and Answers are supposed to be more real aren’t they?”
“Give me my cat.” She pulled the Admiral into her arms and he happily flopped across her lap. “Don’t mind the purring, Jon once again has chosen cat over sound quality.”
“Oh, they love it,” Jon smirked. His hand ran through the Admiral’s fur. She gently pushed the cat back into Jon’s lap so she could maneuver the tablet and her notes a bit easier.
Georgie skimmed through the questions. “Jons-Skepticism asks: When you came out with your Pride WTG logo pins I was super excited that you included aro and ace. You said when you announced them that you would have to keep an ace pin especially for Jon. You don’t have to answer this if you don’t want to, I was wondering though if Jon is ace or if it was just a joke?”
She had mentioned before hand to Jon that there was a question about it and asked if he wanted to include it in their Q and A. He had agreed.
“That was a very recent episode so I think it will be good to answer this one directly. There was a bit of a backlash accusing Georgie of outing me on the podcast or of making a rude joke, but we do edit this, and I have a little bit of say for what gets included.”
“Just a little. Wouldn’t want it to go to his head.”
“Georgie was just being… sweet. She wasn’t making a joke at anyone’s expense. The truth is I don’t really know much about the community and the terms used. Georgie has been helpful in that, but I’m…” He trailed off thinking about it. “I grew up as … odd for a lot of reasons. A lot of things… didn’t make sense to me… you know how I feel about evidence and proper justification of things. Gender and orientation weren’t things I struggled with exactly. It was just a… lack of interest? Boys can’t wear skirts, girls can’t be on the football team. It seemed like useless rhetoric. And when you get to a certain age you… feel a certain way. Sorry. I’m trying to… explain it. My internal feelings never had to interact with the rest of the world. I saw myself as weird and I didn’t expect that others would understand me or feel the way I did. Society tries to convince us that we’re broken if we’re not the same as everyone else. Sometimes it succeeds… Georgie has helped me understand. I’m a private person. I don’t think I would be able to talk about it without her…” He sighed. “I’m rambling I hate rambling. I’m just… learning. Asexual fits… with how I am. I’ve never really needed a label before, or even knew there was one. I was sort of insulted when I heard the term the first time thinking about single-celled organisms. I like it better now. There is a comfort in it, that other people are the same… so I wanted to pass that on. That’s why we kept it. It’s not really anyone’s business… but maybe if one of the authors I read as a child had written about someone like me I would have felt different in my… more awkward years. We were trying to go for casual.”
“We forgot that sometimes it’s better to be explicit.”
They chuckled.
Georgie checked the time.
“Alright Jon, I think we have time for one more question which is a pretty big one. This comes from MKBwood: Have either of you seen the supernatural before?”
Jon started stroking the Admiral’s fur and a long silence stretched between them. As they both were urging the other to go first.
They had talked about it before… in the vaguest sense. When they started Georgie asked. Jon said yes. It had come as a surprise considering his skepticism, but he was openly researching the supernatural back in school, there had to be a reason for it. And Georgie… well… she had only answered: Yeah. Me too. They had never gone into detail. It wasn’t about trust it was like… infection. She didn’t want Jon to get poisoned by it the same way she had. But maybe he had his own poison too.
Jon spoke first, his attention solely on the Admiral.
“I… have, but I won’t go into it.” He smiled bitterly. “I can’t prove it you see. There’s no point in sharing something that can’t be proven. And yes. I hate that I can’t. Perhaps that’s an answer for my brand of skepticism. I know that there are things out there. But… I have to believe there can’t be that many of the… things like it. Not without solid evidence.”
Oh. That did explain a lot.
“I have as well.” Georgie said slowly. “That was when I stopped liking horror stories.” She added ironically. “When it’s real the fantasy becomes unappetizing and… not very interesting. There are things in our world that are secret. That we don’t understand. Maybe it goes back to what Jon was saying about… seeing and knowing others that have the same experiences as you. There’s a comfort in it, and spreading information that is interesting, that maybe could even save somebody is the right thing to do. I’m not afraid of the things out there. But they cause a lot of trouble.”
More silence between them. Absentmindedly Georgie noted it.
“Well,” She forced a brighter tone. “On that cheerful note I think we’ll call it there. Thank you so much to those that submitted questions. I’m Georgie Barker.”
“And I’m Jonathan Sims.”
“Goodbye!”
This would be the part where the outro and theme music would play, but that would all be edited in later. Jon let the Admiral crawl off his lap and over to Georgie. She stroked his fur.
“I don’t suppose you want to talk about it?” She asked.
“I don’t ever want to talk about it, Georgie… it. It was a Leitner.”
“The books?”
“Yes.” He looked up at the ceiling and sighed. “It was… a spider.”
“Oh. That explains…”
“The disdain for them? Yes. I… I’ll never forget it. I remember every line of that book… what about you?”
“A dead woman spoke to me,” Georgie replied. “She told me the future. She stole my fear, or maybe there was just nothing scarier than what she had said.”
Jon nodded pensively.
“I think that’s good.” Georgie said turning off the equipment. “Want to take the rest of the night off? I’ll start editing tomorrow. We can get takeout.”
“As long as it’s not Hungarian.” Jon forced a smile, his eyes weren’t in it. He was still thinking of his spider.
“I suppose we can get a curry instead then.” She took his hand and pulled him to a stand. Held him and kissed his cheek.
“I’m alright. I just… try not to think about it.”
“One day we’ll owe each other the stories, but maybe not today?”
“Yes. Not today.”

This video is dedicated to the practice of pencil drawing, portraying objects from life starting from simple shapes.
Starting from simple and gradually more complex objects but always drawing starting from simple shapes.
I don't care about the linearity of the design or the geometric precision, but the expressiveness of the result.
If I draw what I perceive, giving less importance to rationality, the work is more authentic and expressive.

Data privacy quiz
Are you maximising the full value of privacy-driven analytics?
Take our quiz to find out!
1 / 10
1. What is the GDPR? (Warm up question!)
a) An annoying EU regulation that forces companies to overhaul their internal data privacy processes or get a massive fine
b) An acronym for Grossly Damaging, Pointless Red-tape
c) An opportunity to leverage a privacy-driven approach to boost the value of your brand
Wrong – The General Data Protection Regulation is now two years old. It’s high time you turned a privacy-first approach to your advantage. Check out our new Guide to find out how!
Correct (c) - In an increasingly privacy-driven online ecosystem, complying with the GDPR is part of a broader privacy approach that can bring your company a wide range of benefits. Read our new Guide to find out how you can considerably boost the value of your brand by adopting a privacy-first approach!
2 / 10
2. Multiple choice - What is the definition of a privacy-first approach?
a) Taking positive-sum, proactive measures to protecting data privacy
b) Having a clear commitment to set and enforce high standards of privacy − generally higher than the standards set out by global laws and regulation
c) Operating with complete transparency with the aim of cementing consumer accountability and trust
All of the above and more! By working with an analytics provider that is entirely privacy driven, companies can leverage a privacy-driven approach to considerably boost the value of their brand. For over 20 years, Data Privacy has been at the heart of AT Internet’s approach and we have long held the protection of user data and the respect for user privacy as a core value and guiding principle. We are fully committed to respecting user privacy and promoting the fundamental values of data protection – providing complete transparency on how we collect, process and use data, both on our websites and those of our customers using our digital analytics solution.
3 / 10
3. Adopting a privacy-centric GDPR-compliant approach brings no benefits whatsoever to a company
a) True
b) False
Wrong – By adopting a GDPR-compliant privacy-first approach, companies can leverage a range of direct and secondary benefits – from increased revenue to raised consumer brand perception and trust.
Correct – According to research, 92% of executives from compliant firms say their organisation has gained a competitive advantage from GDPR-compliance. This includes direct as well as longer term benefits – from increased revenue to elevated consumer perception and trust.
4 / 10
4. Companies that are proactively privacy-first can significantly boost their revenue
a) True
b) False
Wrong – Numerous market studies have shown that being privacy driven can bring widespread short and long-term benefits to an organisation. These in include increased consumer confidence, loyalty and overall performance.
Correct – 76% of companies boosted their performance with increased customer loyalty and online purchasing resulting in increased revenue. 81% of compliant organisations also said the improved consumer trust and satisfaction had a positive impact on targeted leads for marketing. Taking a privacy-first approach is a considerable long-term value driver.
5 / 10
5. What is a virtuous cycle of trust?
a) Yet another pointless marketing concept
b) Gathering contradictory low-quality toxic data, then feeding it to decision makers who make poor decisions – which then removes trust in the data and damages the brand
c) Creating a win-win where quality data enables companies to improve their CX – which boosts consumer trust and increases data sharing
Wrong – When companies rely on low quality data, they can cause significant long-term damage to their brand. However, generating a virtual cycle of trust – when enhanced CX leads to increased trust and greater consumer willingness to share their personal data – is a major value driver.
Correct – A virtual cycle of trust is generated when enhanced CX leads to increased trust and greater consumer willingness to share their personal data. As they share more data, brands can use it to further improve CX and therefore user retention (via more personalised experiences etc.), which consequently boosts trust. By using an independent tool that is privacy-driven, combined with the minimisation of collected/calculated data, companies can considerably boost their value.
6 / 10
6. A privacy-centric approach boosts an organisation’s brand image and leads to increased consumer trust
a) True
b) False
Wrong – The future currency of the online world is trust. If a company invests in developing a meaningful brand strategy, the brand’s behaviour will foster consumer confidence – which leads to considerable performance-driving benefits.
Correct – 81% of organisations say that a privacy-driven GDPR-compliant approach has had a positive impact on their reputation/brand image. Simply put – GDPR compliance is good for business. Not only does a privacy-centric approach boost an organisation’s reputation and brand image, but 84% of companies also said overall consumer trust had increased. This obviously leads to increased revenue, with strong performance-driving benefits such as greater customer loyalty and increases in online purchasing.
7 / 10
7. Multiple choice - Which additional secondary benefits can companies leverage from a privacy-compliant approach?
a) Improved CX
b) Appeal to Investors
c) Enhanced accountability and privacy values
d) Increased agility and innovation
All of the above! By adopting a privacy-driven approach to their analytics, companies can forge a win-win where improved transparency and accountability drives trust and value. Of the 95% of customers who say their trust in a company makes them more likely to be loyal, 93% would recommend that company, with 92% buying more products and services more frequently. While 88% would spend more money and 86% are keen to share their experiences. Optimised privacy practices also bring additional benefits such as enhanced internal agility and innovation.
8 / 10
8. Multiple Choice – Which of the following are the risks of GDPR non-compliance?
a) A large fine
b) A lengthy prison sentence
c) Wasted time and cost for breach management, notification, post breach expenses
d) Lost and unrecoverable business
e) Irreparable reputation and brand damage
Correct (a) (c) (d) (e) – As well as the risk of the fine for a conviction for non-compliant use of personal data, a deluge of long-tail costs kick in, not to mention collateral brand damage that can drag on for years. This can include investigation and escalation measures, notification communication costs, post data-breach response actions, lost business and irreparable damage to the company’s reputation.
Wrong (b) – OK you probably won’t go to jail, but the list of short and long-tail costs can cause significant damage to your brand. Whereas a privacy-driven approach opens up a wide range of potential benefits and an opportunity to considerably boost your brand value.
9 / 10
9. Multiple Choice - What are the benefits of an ethical data minimisation approach?
a) Ethical mini-what?
b) Boost efficiency → Act faster
c) Elevate trust in your brand and increase its value
Wrong (a) – In line with Article 5(1)(c) of the GDPR which requires personal data to be “adequate, relevant and limited to what is necessary in relation to the purposes for which they are processed”, data minimisation means that any processing (the analysis of data to gain actionable insights) is carried out using the least amount of data necessary. The data collected is never used for any other purpose or processed without consent from the data subject. When companies minimise their data gathering, shorter storage time provides fresher, more accurate, privacy-friendly and energy-efficient data. This in turn creates a win-win where businesses can optimise their CX, elevate consumer trust, boost their value and significantly reduce their impact on the planet.
Correct (b) – Reducing your data to the essential minimum is more efficient – it allows companies to streamline their collection and have a clear vision of the data they’re processing, which in turn contributes to better CX. Fewer requests minimises the processing time and a more efficient API data flow means that it can be sent far more rapidly to the data warehouse for speedier processing. Shorter storage times also provide fresher, more accurate, privacy-friendly and energy-efficient data – all of which can be used to optimise decision-making.
Correct (c) – Privacy-driven ethics and digital sobriety are opportunities for brands to significantly elevate trust and boost the value of their brand offering. By using an independent tool that is privacy-compliant, combined with the minimisation of collected/calculated data, companies can initiate a virtuous circle at the service of digital ecology – where their data is more accurate, more reliable, more respectful and less harmful to the planet.
10 / 10
10. Multiple Choice - Why is it vital to work with an analytics provider you can trust?
a) They provide complete transparency in the information given to customers for their end users, and that this information is easily accessible and expressed in a clear manner
b) Their customers always maintain complete ownership of their data, they have no specific purpose for the data, and do not share it with any third party
c) Their audience measurement operates in an entirely consent-driven environment, in complete compliance with the GDPR
d) They have a Data Processing Agreement which specifies exactly how data subjects exercise their rights, involving the right to access and erasure, the right to limitation of processing and the right to object
e) They provide unlimited support via a team of expert analytics consultants and customer success managers.
f) They have a DPO in place and legal team specialising in data privacy to support customers in their compliancy strategy
All of the above! AT Internet has been a leading independent, digital analytics provider for over 20 years. Data Privacy has always been at the heart of our approach and we have long held the protection of user data and the respect for user privacy as a core value and guiding principle. Our Analytics Suite is fully compliant with the GDPR, and we are dedicated to setting the best example for our customers and industry peers, with the highest standards of data protection and privacy. It’s part of our DNA.

US: Come together to fix the greenhouse industry education system
CONTENT SOURCED FROM HORTIDAILY
To spark the debate on the immense shortage of trained growers and skilled labor force, a new Think Tank has been created by several parties within the greenhouse industry. In this open letter, initiator Julie Vijverberg explains why it is important to join her in the conversation how to reconstruct the U.S. greenhouse industry education system and optimize its adaptation to present day technologies and production practices.
Hello Greenhouse Industry,
My name is Julie Gilbert- Vijverberg and I am the owner of G&V Greenhouse Solutions. I am reaching out today to begin the long overdue conversation of how the greenhouse industry needs trained growers and skilled labor force from universities. Pull up a chair and join me in this conversation!
I’m positive you have been directly or indirectly effected by the shortage of growers in the United States. I currently have colleges onboard in creating courses to fit our industries need. We as an industry need to invest in our future thru our universities. I have created a think tank of several industry leaders (Owners, Operators, Growers, & General Managers) & value your knowledge, experience, and thoughts to include you to this consortium.
Thru numerous conversations, I have heard the same theme in what the industry wants university graduates to show up to the job with. Please note the themes are not limited to the following list:
• Introduction to Greenhouse Management Systems (Hoogendoorn, Priva, and Hortimax)
• Light Schedules
• Pest Identification and Management
• Food Safety
• Plant Pathology
• Energy/Shading Curtains – how and why they are used
• Evaluating Water Analysis and Making Recipe Changes
• Crop Disease and Deficiency Identification and Correction
• Running the Greenhouse
I have universities in the Netherlands and United States teaming up with us. I value your opinion as you are a respected member of the high tech growing market. Currently US universities are operating low tech greenhouses. When graduates are hired at facilities, such as yours, they are faced with a learning curve. I’m eager to hear what skills and knowledge your facility would like university employees to possess.
We are all coming together to fix the issue of graduates lacking knowledge of the greenhouse industry. Every person in this group will help solve a problem that will make our industry move forward. Working hands on in facilities is an integral part of creating our industries work force. I plan on facilitating (unpaid) internships for students to learn the basic skills that are needed for a greenhouse to operate. The internships would last ten weeks and the students would intern at two different greenhouses. The skills are not limited to the following: Crop work, pest management, verifying computer readings, & shadowing the head grower. We understand that growers are very busy individuals, but by taking the time now, this will alleviate the shortage of undertrained grower candidates in the future.
Another goal is for the college students to build relationships with some the top crop consultants. These relationships will help catalyst ideas & past experience to translate into higher yields at your facility. Having mentors is extremely important as this is how I personally, along with fellow colleagues have learned the industry. If you know any crop consultants that would be interested in educating our industries future, please have them contact me.
We as an industry can create a better viable future by beginning this conversation. We are currently in the process of gathering the thoughts of top industry leaders. We are going to take the thoughts and
ideas to the Universities that are currently on board and discuss what curriculum can be created. If you are interested in joining this discussion, please email your thoughts and ideas. The information that you share with me will only be shared with universities, with your name retracted.
I look forward to hearing from you and continuing this conversation with a response from our university partners!
Warm regards,
Julie Gilbert- Vijverberg

Golden State Warriors lawsuit shows the dangers of NBA’s embrace of technology
LaTisha Satchell, a Warriors fan, is suing her favorite team over the behavior of the team app. Beyond providing updates of team news activities and scores, the lawsuit says that the app used the microphone on Satchell’s phone to record her private conversations. She was being recorded at all times, even when she wasn’t directly using the app.
The recording behavior of the app was initially intended as a way for the Warriors to sell merchandise and ticket upgrades. It was supposed to track users using audio “beacons” that played through transmitters when the user was in Warriors-owned property, sending back data about where the user was and how long they had been there. So if you were in a higher seat, it could suggest tickets to get closer to the game or, if you were around the gift shop, it would send ads of things you could buy there.
But it went beyond that. The app expanded that reach to recording users, using the phone’s microphone, and collecting data of their conversations and whereabouts, as long as the app had location and microphone permissions. Those permissions can be changed in the settings of the app, but most people hardly ever even look at what permissions the apps ask for, let alone think to change them.
How did an app meant to supplement the fan experience turn into a tool for recording private conversations? And, perhaps more importantly, why would an NBA team even want to know any of that information in the first place?
The NBA wants to conquer the digital landscape. Commissioner Adam Silver wants the league to reflect the time in which it exists and the preferences of its fans, rather than being left behind. This means that the league has to find a way to incorporate and use new technologies to its advantage. The league is considering and developing everything from off-court goodies like the team apps, finding new ways to stream games, and virtual reality for fans to on-court advancements such as wearable technology for players. The objective of all of this is to enhance fan experience, which is another way of saying keeping butts in the seats and keeping the league profitable. Teams might also be able to use VR and wearables to gain a competitive advantage.

The possibilities of some of the technology is ridiculous. The wearables, produced by the companies Catapult Sports, StatSports and Zephyr, are already in use in practices and in regular G-League games. They can tell you how much and which directions a player ran, their heart rate, how fatigued they are, their rate of acceleration and deceleration, how many times they jumped and their musculoskeletal intensity. That means that you could see how strained the body of LeBron James is, from his heart to his joints, while he averages a triple double against the Warriors in another Finals matchup.
The WHOOP straps measure strain, recovery and sleep.
Expanding to other avenues of streaming, like Facebook Live or Amazon Prime, will also change the experience of watching a basketball game. The NFL already streams through Prime and one of their features is the options of additional broadcasts. You can change the commentary of the game from standard American english to UK English, Spanish or Brazilian Portuguese. In a sports with worldwide appeal like the NBA, such an option would be a tremendous step forward in being inclusive. There’s also the chance of having celebrities, comedians or the users themselves as color commentators. You could be the master of your experience, mixing and matching what you want to see and hear, and how you want to receive the games, rather than being burdened with the standard broadcast.
The apps are a little more straightforward but the breadth of information that you get from them is still staggering. Even if some of it has been taken for granted. The Cavaliers app provides the score, recap and stats of the last game. There’s a link to daily news, where you get an overview of what is happening with the team, from practice drills, press conferences and their tweets. You have the ability to watch postgame conferences of individual players and read the programming notes for the next game.
If you switch over to the Featured tab, you can buy tickets, look at the roster, the schedule, latest news and media, and the standings of the conference.
There’s also a Twitter tab where you can see tweets from all of the players on the roster as well the team and other sports accounts. The app gives you deep access and knowledge of the team right at your fingertips. And soon, it could be incorporated with the wearables of the players, so that you can see how their bodies performed alongside their base and advanced stats. This is not including how Virtual Reality could let you be at a game without ever leaving your home.
This digital revolution is unavoidable, not only because that’s the way that the world is going but because the technology is awesome and convenient.
I want to be able to hear what the referees are saying to players during a game. To feel like I’m in the Staples Center or Madison Square Garden without even leaving the bed. And to get a reading of Kyrie Irving’s heart rate when he makes another ridiculous statement so I can argue whether he’s knowingly lying or not. I want to be able to watch games on TNT without hearing the guys from Inside the NBA. Having the option to listen to Desus and Mero making jokes about the game instead, would be heaven. Just imagine that.
Even right now we can get push notifications about everything from the score of a game to what memes LeBron is using on Instagram. It’s such a common and everyday thing that you almost forget how mind-blowing it really is. I have the ESPN, NBA, TNT, Basketball Reference and a few supplementary apps just so I don’t miss anything. These new technologies, wearables, streaming, VR, would be great additions to what we already have in making the fan experience more immersive and fun.
But there’s a tradeoff.
The immediate price fans pay for these digital wonders is their attention. The NBA, like all other companies, wants to keep its audience engaged for as long as possible. The league has succeeded so far in doing so in the social media age. It has the personalities, talent pool and drama to drive a yearlong news cycle; there’s always something happening, a tweet, a meme, a crossover, a dunk or a great game. It helps that the league embraced the technologies and its people rather than cocooning itself — as other leagues did — in the arrogance that the world would conform to it, rather than the other way around. There’s no reason to think that the NBA won’t continue to be smart about embracing the digital world going forward.
Past attention, there’s a more sinister to be paid to participate in the digital world, even with things as ordinary and everyday as apps: The price of access and information.
For balance purposes, let’s look at the Cavaliers team app. After downloading the app, one must agree to allow it to: Read calendar events plus confidential information, add or modify events and send emails to guests without owners’ knowledge, take pictures and videos, read your contacts, find accounts on the device, approximate location using the network, find your location through a combination of the network and GPS, read your phone status and identity, modify or delete the contents of your SD card, read the contents of your SD card, prevent phone from sleeping, connect and disconnect from Wi-Fi, receive data from the internet, access Bluetooth settings, control vibration, view network connections, control Near Field Communication, receive full network access, retrieve running apps, pair with Bluetooth devices, run at startup, and toggle sync on and off and view Wi-Fi connections.
It doesn’t allow tracking and recording through the microphone like the Warriors app did, but does it really need to? To use a simple app, you have to give up control of your phone, the information in it and the information of where you’re at and what you’re doing as long as the app is on your phone. All in service of enhancing your fan experience.
The privacy policy of the Cavaliers app says that the collected information may be used to contact the user about the app, to monitor and improve the app, inform the user about a prize that they won and most importantly, to customize the advertising and content that the user sees.
This is really what’s at work here, and how these apps make money. All of the collected information can be shared with advertisers, sponsors and (the open-ended and shady sounding) “other organizations.”
These apps collect people’s information to sell them things. Sure, they show scores and stats, but the deep function is to turn a person into a constant consumer. The gathering of information that includes private conversations is to have a desirable bank of information for advertisers who can use it to be more efficient in who they target, the options they target them with and when to target them with those options. As soon as you download the app and grant it the permissions that it asks for, you agree to participate in having your private life sold to the highest bidder. You give up your world so it can be monetized.
Expand this dynamic beyond the small apps, to virtual reality and wearables, and everything from brain and bodily activity becomes sellable. It’s the weirdness of being followed by an ad for shoes after you search for shoes once in Google, but with everything you do. All the time.
This penchant for collecting information about people and selling it to advertisers isn’t a specific NBA problem. It’s one of the main functions of the digital world. The enhanced experience of life, the great things about the internet, is the appearance that hides that ugly fact. The attention, information and privacy of the users is the product. (Facebook uses the information gathered about its users to create “shadow profiles” in order to try to connect them to people that they may know. Meaning that it can gather your information through another individual, if that individual uploads contact information and happens to have your number or email in it.)
Since the NBA wants and admittedly needs to become part of that world, it has to play by those rules. And if they make a little extra money while they’re at it, hey — that works for them, too. All the other team apps have the same type of permission details and privacy policies. With digital life becoming more dominant than disconnected life, there’s a wealth of information available from users that can be sold. Though, as the beacon tracking proves, you don’t even need to be online to be watched.
There’s not much that can be done; the tide of connectivity is moving forward and the new technologies are too attractive to be ignored. Wearables, VR, streaming services and apps are really great tools, and they will serve to make the NBA a better and more fun league. Yet, there needs to be an awareness at the price of these great things. The cost of an enhanced fan experience, the cost of being a modern person, is the attention and privacy of the user. It’s to have your private moments and your passions used against you, in order to transform you into a constant consumer.
