What's in a Name? – M/F Kuzusouda Ficlet

Summary: Fuyuhiko wants to support his girlfriend, who's just come out to him. The first step? Figuring out what to call her.

“So, uh… what should I call you now?”

Souda – Fuyuhiko would loathe to think of his girlfriend with her surname, but her given name no longer seems appropriate – twirls her dark hair around her finger, deep in thought. “I, uh, haven't come up with a new name yet,” she admits sheepishly. “I mean, I've thought of a couple, but they just don’t fit, ya get me?”

“I getcha,” Fuyuhiko says. “What about Isuzu? Or Suzuki?”

She rolls her eyes. “Come on, ‘Hiko, my car brainrot ain't that bad.”

“Could’ve fooled me.” He ducks his head as a pillow flies toward him. “Seriously, though, I can't keep calling you Kazuichi, right? Too masculine and shit.”

Souda leans back against the headboard of her bed, tilting her head towards the ceiling. “I mean… I’m not out to anyone else yet. I wanted to tell you first because you deserve to know most of all.” She pauses for a moment, deep in thought. “I guess you can just call me Kaz, for now. I mean, you already do, but…”

“I get it,” Fuyuhiko says. “You want me to call you Kaz, all the time, until you decide on a new name.”

Souda – Kaz – nods.

“Got it.” He scoots over to join her at the opposite end of the bed and rests his head on her shoulder. “Y’know this doesn't change a damn thing about how I feel about you, right?”

“‘Course.” She kisses the top of his head. “Thanks for accepting me as the woman I am. It means a lot to me.”

A smile tugs at his lips. “Don’t mention it.”

One of the many reasons I swear by "friends to lovers" Kuzusouda is that it allows for a clear comparison between Kazuichi's infatuation for Sonia and his love for Fuyuhiko.

Kazuichi never loved Sonia; he loved the idealised version of her that he'd come up with. He was never really interested in befriending her or getting to know her on a deeper level. All he ever saw of her was the perfect princess who could do no wrong, and he worshipped the ground she walked on. He was so deluded by his obsession that he never accepted that Sonia wasn't interested in him, nor did he ever respect her boundaries.

In contrast, should he catch feelings for his best friend Fuyuhiko, he'd have a much better idea of who Fuyuhiko really is, and he'd love everything about Fuyuhiko, flaws included. He'd be much more covert about his feelings at first because Fuyuhiko's friendship is one of the best things that's ever happened to him, and he doesn't want to risk losing it. He knows that Fuyuhiko's not perfect, that Fuyuhiko is as flawed and human as anyone else, and that he's just trying to be his best self. And, perhaps most importantly of all, Kazuichi would love himself, too. He wouldn't throw himself away for Fuyuhiko, as he would've for Sonia. He'd soon realise that Fuyuhiko loves him for who he is, too, and that he'd never trade Kazuichi for anyone else.

In Plain Sight – Kuzusouda Ficlet

Summary: Fuyuhiko has a chat with Kazuichi about a letter he'd received.

A/N: Came up with this silly little idea a few days ago and just had to turn it into a ficlet. Enjoy.

“So… you wanted to meet me here?”

It's a warm spring day, but the secluded spot at the back of the school is filled with gigantic trees that provide ample shade – and privacy – for Kazuichi and Fuyuhiko. Perhaps a little too much shade, for Kazuichi pulls down his sleeves in an attempt to ward off the unexpected chill in the air.

“Yeah,” Fuyuhiko says. “I wanted to talk to you about your letter.”

Kazuichi’s eyes widen. He audibly gulps. “L-letter?”

“Yup.” Fuyuhiko takes a slip of paper out from his pocket and unfolds it, before presenting it to Kazuichi. “This one.”

Kazuichi stares, bug-eyed, at the letter in front of him. “I-I didn't write that! I can help you find out who did, but I swear on my steering wheel collection–”

“Kaz. It's clearly your handwriting. Nice try hidin’ it, though.”

“But–”

“And nobody else in our class would compare a crush to a fuckin’ car engine.”

“How do you know–”

“Don't think I didn't notice the way you've been starin’ at me, either. “Secret Admirer” my ass. Unless you've got an evil twin, there's only one person who could've possibly written this letter.”

“Ugh! Okay, fine, I admit it! I wrote it! I like you! Are you done makin’ fun of me!?”

Fuyuhiko furrows his brow. “I’m not making fun of you, Kaz. I just…” There’s a momentary pause. “I just wanted to let you know that I like you, too.”

For a moment, Kazuichi looks as though he's just seen a teddy bear come to life. Then he laughs – a short, dry, bitter laugh. “Oh, I get it, this is a stupid prank. You're gettin’ my hopes up just to smash my heart into a million pieces! Well, it's not gonna work on me!”

“Then what do I gotta do to prove it to you?”

“Well, you could kiss me.”

Fuyuhiko steps forward into Kazuichi’s personal space. His expression softens. “Gladly.” Without missing a beat, he closes the distance between them.

Kazuichi is frozen; it's clear that he hadn’t expected Fuyuhiko to actually kiss him, and so readily at that. Fuyuhiko closes his eyes and snakes an arm around Kazuichi’s waist, holding him close. Eventually, Kazuichi begins to kiss back.

He cries out in surprise when Fuyuhiko pulls away. He hadn’t expected the tender moment to be over so soon.

Fuyuhiko’s face is flushed, as though he'd just run a marathon, but, somehow, he still finds it in himself to smirk. “Was that enough for ya?”

“I-I mean, you wouldn't go ‘round kissin’ people for no reason,” Kazuichi concedes. He touches his lips, as though seeking confirmation that yes, he really has just been kissed by Fuyuhiko.

“Good.” Fuyuhiko turns and begins to walk away. “Mirai Café, after school. Be there.”

I like to think of Kuzusouda as a journey. A journey from two gay teenage boys dealing with young love and navigating their first relationship as any typical teenage couple would, to two young men fighting their shared trauma and forging a future at each other's sides.

can we get some head canons regarding how they started dating?(i.e: who confessef first and how, who said ‘i live you’ first, etc.)

I've already gone into most of that in this post, but I'm happy to expand on it a little :) Since you didn't specify any particular point in the canon, I'll share some headcanons from each time period, just to keep things consistent with that post.

Pre-Despair/Non-Despair: After spending months waiting for his crush on Kazuichi to go away, and realising it persists despite his best efforts, Fuyuhiko pulls Kazuichi aside one day and tells him everything. Kazuichi hasn't fully processed his own crush on Fuyuhiko, so he needs some time before he can give Fuyuhiko an answer. By the next day, he's certain of his feelings for Fuyuhiko, and the two commemorate the beginning of their relationship with an arcade date. They may break up on graduation day so that Fuyuhiko can fulfill his duties as the Ultimate Yakuza.

Killing Game: They become friends after the second trial, and Kazuichi develops feelings for Fuyuhiko shortly afterward. He confesses to Fuyuhiko during their time in the Funhouse, hoping that a relationship will distract him from all the death and despair around him. Fuyuhiko is very hesitant, for multiple reasons, but he can't deny his own feelings for Kazuichi. Eventually, they begin a secret relationship, on the condition that they break up once the killing game is over. Of course, with the truth of everything being what it is, it doesn't quite end that way.

Post-Canon: Fuyuhiko and Kazuichi have been friends for a very long time now, but they don't catch feelings for each other – or at least notice those feelings – until about a year following their escape from the Neo World Program. They each turn to their other friends to help them make sense of their feelings; Fuyuhiko turns to Peko, while Kazuichi turns to Hajime. Peko and Hajime both encourage them to make a move, but due to their packed schedules, among other things, they don't find the opportunity – until one evening in the island's newly-built hot springs, where a sudden intimate moment between them leads to a kiss. Only then do they admit their feelings for each other and agree to begin dating.

Island Mode: It ends up being a summer fling, or something like it anyway. They fall for each other shortly after befriending each other, and Kazuichi confesses to Fuyuhiko very quickly. They don't think they'll see each other again once the school trip ends, but little do they know...

Who Would Confess First? – a very long and rambly infodump

So. Love confessions. They're one of my favourite things to think, read and write about when it comes to my ships, and Kuzusouda is no exception. Lately I've been thinking about who'd be more likely to make the first move, and I've come to the conclusion that it'd probably depend on which point of the canon we're at. I feel like pre-despair (or non-despair if we're going the AU route; this includes things like Danganronpa S and the Talent Development Plan), mid-killing game and post-canon are all very different points in time, thus all the SDR2 characters would have noticeably different worldviews, experiences and priorities in each time period. And this can even inform things like confessing your feelings to your crush.

Let's go into that in more detail.

Pre-Despair/Non-Despair

I think Fuyuhiko would confess first.

Now hear me out – I know there's that whole thing with the yakuza and him needing to continue the bloodline and all that. I do think that he'd sit on his feelings for a good while before making any moves, both to see if they'd go away on their own and because he just doesn't like having to talk about his feelings if he can help it. That being said, if his feelings persist long enough and/or grow too intense, he'd rather just get them out there before they eat him out from the inside or ruin his friendship with Kazuichi. Assuming that he and Kazuichi have grown close enough to be able to talk about anything with each other – which they likely would've for Fuyuhiko to catch feelings for him in the first place – I figure that Fuyuhiko would feel pretty awful about hiding something like this from him. He'd confess not because he wants or expects Kazuichi to feel the same way or begin a relationship with him, but rather to get it out there so that he can begin to move on and really focus on what matters most to him. This confession could also double as a queer coming-out, and to Fuyuhiko, that could be the real test on whether Kazuichi is really a friend worth keeping around.

Now, it's not impossible for Kazuichi to be the one confessing in this time period, but I do find it unlikely because of his past experiences with losing friends. Kazuichi would probably be kinda clingy with Fuyuhiko, and very, very careful not to do anything that could damage their friendship. Kazuichi doesn't know how Fuyuhiko might respond to a love confession from him, and he likely doesn't even know how Fuyuhiko feels about LGBT+ people. To him, the best way to deal with his crush is to fake it until he makes it, basically. This might include playing up his infatuation with Sonia long after those feelings for her have vanished – if they'd ever existed in the first place.

During the Killing Game

Compared to a pre-despair or non-despair setting, the dynamics between Fuyuhiko and Kazuichi are a little different. They have good reason to distrust each other now, especially early on, and the progression of their friendship would be faster (keep in mind that the KG lasts a couple of weeks in-universe) but a little rockier. Keep in mind that they don't remember anything about their time at Hope's Peak, so whatever might've happened back then doesn't really matter for the most part.

With this change in dynamics and circumstances in mind, I actually think Kazuichi would be more likely to break the ice.

A major part of Kazuichi's character in SDR2 is his crush on Sonia. Indeed, being trapped in a killing game and fearing for his life every single day doesn't stop him from not only getting attached to Sonia, but being very open about his crush to the point of making her uncomfortable. While this crush was very much present pre-despair as well, you could argue that here, it is, in part, a coping mechanism and an attempt to distract himself from the reality of his and his classmates' situation.

If Kazuichi were to then develop feelings for Fuyuhiko – genuine feelings for someone he actually knows beyond a surface level – then he might eventually confess to Fuyuhiko in the hopes that they can get into a relationship and he can have something to distract himself from all the death and despair. It's not a good or healthy reason to ask someone out, but 1. Kazuichi is a hormonal teenage boy, 2. he's literally stuck in a life or death situation and 3. he's already not one to think things through very well and the killing game is likely making that worse. I figure that he'd still be kind of clingy to Fuyuhiko and anxious about how his crush would affect their friendship, but since their friendship here wouldn't have been as much of a "slow burn" as it was pre-despair, and there's a very real chance Fuyuhiko will die anyway... well, it's not really as much of an issue here.

Fuyuhiko would be the opposite. I think he'd swallow down his feelings no matter what because he's in a killing game and he knows that his #1 priority is to get out of there before anyone else dies. I feel like he'd find it pretty silly to focus so much on high school romance drama in such a dire situation. Besides, the dude's just lost two of the most important people in his life. He's gonna be sore about that for awhile no matter how much he tries to move on and be strong for them.

Post-Canon

I always like to say that a post-canon setting is actually the best place for Kuzusouda to succeed long-term, because by that point they've known each other for a good while, they've been through a lot together, and, provided that a lot of time has passed and they're both in a healthier headspace, there's nothing stopping them from being together. It's for this reason that I believe that, in this setting, both are equally likely to make the first move.

Inevitably, the former Remnants of Despair will have to start thinking about romantic relationships at some point. Problem is, given that they're to be isolated from the outside world for the rest of their lives, their dating pool is... not very big, to say the least. On the flip side, Fuyuhiko and Kazuichi are now in a position where, if they were to ask the other out, they wouldn't have anything to lose.

Possibly the biggest hindrance to Kuzusouda succeeding in a non-despair setting is the Kuzuryuu Clan. Fuyuhiko needs to continue the bloodline as the up-and-coming heir, and he can't do that when he's with a man. He's spent his entire life working up to this point, too; he's not gonna throw all that away for Kazuichi so easily. Here, the Kuzuryuu Clan is long gone, and Fuyuhiko's future is nothing like how he'd envisioned it. His entire life has changed in a very drastic way, and, again, he needs a lot of time to come to terms with that, just like everyone else. Once he does, however, he'd realise that now, he has the freedom to love whomever his heart desires. In time, he'd come to accept a relationship with Kazuichi as part of his happy future on Jabberwock Island.

As for Kazuichi, I figure he'd go through a lot more character development here than he ever really did in the game proper. If he sought comfort and escape during the killing game, then this is the point where he'd have no choice but to face reality. Nothing about his life is normal anymore, and he has an immense amount of trauma to work through. As the saying goes, what doesn't kill you makes you stronger, and although Kazuichi would probably have a harder time overcoming his hardships than most of his companions, he'd likely come out of the other side as a much more mature person. He'd confess to Fuyuhiko if Fuyuhiko doesn't confess to him first, not to distract himself or satisfy his hormones, but out of genuine love and care for Fuyuhiko, because he wants a future where Fuyuhiko will always be at his side.

What About Island Mode?

Island Mode is more of a canon divergence than a full-fledged non-despair AU, given that the only thing that's really changed is that there's no killing game. We, the audience, know full well that these characters are the Remnants of Despair and that they're in a simulation designed to rehabilitate them, but as far as the characters are concerned, they're meeting each other for the first time on a fun school trip. The Kazuichi and Fuyuhiko we see here are pretty much the same Kazuichi and Fuyuhiko we see pre-despair or in a proper non-despair AU, so my headcanons for those settings would apply here as well.

I Just Bought A Kuzusouda Doujinshi

Will I regret this? Probably.

So I’m sure some of you guys know how few Kuzusouda doujinshis there are. None of them are free to read online, and only a handful of them seem to exist in the first place. There are a couple of them on Otaku Republic, but they’re all sold out...

...until now.

Yup, one of them - specifically, one of the really saucy ones - is back in stock, and I just leapt at the chance and bought it. I don’t wanna experience this doujin alone, so once it arrives I’m going to give it a review (or at least try to, seeing as I don’t speak Japanese) and maybe show you guys a few of the pages within ;) It will be a NSFW post, obviously, and I will tag it appropriately, but just hear that in mind.

Can’t wait ‘til it gets here! :D
