Language Before/After Kids

Sorry if the humor is a bit crass, but I've witnessed this phenomena so many times with friends who become parents that I could not help but wonder which extreme side of the line these boys fall on.

This is also a bit of a character dive. I kind of like the idea of Leo constantly censoring himself around Casey Junior, because it gives it even more oomph when he says "badass" in the beginning of the movie since it signals that he now views CJ as an adult who he respects, depends on, and can speak with frankly. No censoring needed.

ARC 3 - Forgiveness - 1 - 2 - 3 - 4 - 5

Eugh boy. April what have you started?

Sorry for all the exposition. This chapter has a lot of setup. In fact, I plan to split it here since it's been rather long. It will be a new Arc on the master post, though it pretty much starts up where this one leaves off. At least it looks like we'll be having some fun in the next one.

Also, people have been asking what my plans are with Replica, so I thought I would give an idea of what to expect. To be completely transparent I plan to split Replica into 2 Books. Book 1 (which we're about 2/3 through) will focus on setting up the colony, understanding all the characters, what happened in the past, and the drama that ensues from it. Book 2, is going to be where all this setup is going to come into play. Lots more action leading up to the beginning of the movie. I'm super excited for book 2, it's going to involve a particular mission mentioned briefly in the movie and the chain events it causes that will ultimately lead to both their greatest success against the Krang as well as the colony's ultimate downfall. So all this setup is kind of necessary since this is a little more... plot heavy. I am sorry it is in my nature, even though I know we all just want to see sweet/sad scenes of them all hugging it out (we'll get there eventually)! At least we'll get thatsooner in the Cass Apocalypse crossover I'm now working on. Look forward to it and bring your tear ducts!

Surprise. Sadly, we're not getting off that easy since these final moments are important. Krang 1 is actually pretty fun to draw but so time consuming. Some themes of self worth and life vs death are starting to be brought up here that I do want to seriously talk about, but I think I'll wait until a better moment a little later in the arch. It's a talk that I think is worth discussing within a safe space, though I can only go as far as to give my own personal experiences. Until then.

Also, Mikey's starting to learn how to make sacred circles! He'll get better at it eventually. I know there's quite a bit of scene jumping going on as of late but it's kind of the running theme of this arch as we hop back and forth between each of these different stories. Hopefully it won't be too hard to follow once we wrap up the final recording.

Also also, I know the Krang's hand should probably MUCH bigger in the last panel since he's so huge, but for the sake of keeping the shot legible just go with it. As always, thank you so much you guys for your patience and all your kind words!

Theater kid to the end. Love Donnie and April so I'm glad we're finally at this scene after so many detours. Wanted to make this update a little longer since it's got a lot of stagnant shots and I'll probably be busy for the next week or so with Zines and pitch prep (as well as the animatic that won out for the 12k celebration!) Sorry these past several updates have been such downers.  I promise the next one will have some fun banter.  Can’t wait to get back to the real world with less digital effects and data dump.  I don’t know how Donnie deals with all of it.��

Below the cut I’ve added a little talk about Donnie and the way he handled this heavy conversation, something I fear might come off a little harsh without the proper context clues.  Also, below is a fun little discovery I made about Omega! 

I’ve already had a few people express how Donnie seems mean to his family in this update, which I totally understand how it can come off like that.  A certain amount of nuance is lost in this sort of comic format with neither descriptors, actual voice acting, or even Donnie’s face to give context for the way he is saying certain lines.  It’s an artistic choice I made, but one I still wish to clarify.

I see the sudden hang up as less Donnie being a jerk and more him having to cut the conversation short because he has to keep focus and he’s scared of Leo talking him down from the ledge he’s standing on.  He’s sticking to his guns and it hurts him to see how much it’s hurting his family and so all he can do is distance himself before the strong emotions cause him to make a mistake in the middle of enemy territory (placing legitimate logical concerns over emotional ones).  At the same time he is attempting to remain calm if only to try and let some of that wash onto Leo and April, because he knows if Leo freaks out too much he could risk bleeding out faster, which is why he was pressing for April to care for him first and foremost.  Were he a better liar he might have done so just to keep Leo calm a little longer, but no such luck. �� Donnie holds so much love for his family, and I don’t think an apocalypse has changed that, he just has difficulty at times knowing the hierarchy of emotions expected of such a rare and dire situation and instead chooses to focus on the logical issues because at least those are some things he has certain control over. He wants to keep his family safe at all costs and if he has to cut off the last conversation he initiated and desperately wanted with his family to do so then he will.  I hope that clears some things up.  I might make this paragraph into it’s own post tomorrow for those who might have missed this update. 

On another note, I discovered something fun while researching Donnie’s screen UI!  (Extra photos under the cut:) Omega is actually in the movie (kind of)!  Look at the lil’ guy!  All sorts of dead!

BEGINNING || PREVIOUS || NEXT MASTER POST Pausing during the very brief eye of the storm.  It’s been an interesting experience drawing this entire scene from first person point of view.  Certainly makes it more difficult to show what’s going on, but hopefully it comes across well enough!  Apologies for the intensity of the scene.

Also, it’s easy to miss so wanted to point out a small detail:

I don’t think Leo is the only one holding onto a keepsake from his brothers.  In my opinion Mikey’s emblem always seemed nearly identical in size and placement to the Donnie-pod chest attachments.  I think he’s worn it ever since.  Thank for your support as always!

Little head canon time, I see Donnie using toothpicks often after running out of cigarettes.  Particularly because he was actually making a “self-cleaning” toothpick in the show so it seems he already had the need for it.  Plus that means he wouldn’t run out since he could continually clean and recycle just the one!  Convenient. Sorry the Donnie sneak peek was not actually his final video as many had hoped. I promise that we will be seeing it in the next update... though it might not be as cheery as some may want.  It will probably need to wait until the new year though.  Going to be doing a hefty Christmas special for my next update and I also need to get to work for a double page spread on the Rise Fashion Zine and an episode pitch for the fan-made season 3. Whew, wish me luck!

 He said the name!  Ironically I had the Replica line in the script before I came up with the title.  In fact it was what gave me the initial idea. Anyways setting the stage for this chapter.  This one will involve a few more people than normal.  Oh and hi Draxum, sorry to give you such an unceremonious introduction.  People were trying to guess who the three members on Team Two were along with Leo.  Answer below the cut:

It was actually these randos from the cut opening haha, so I don’t blame anyone for not figuring it out.  The cut opening has been a great source of material for understanding the vibe of the colony/rebel base and its people.

do you have like. all of omega's expressions pre-drawn so you just paste it onto his head or do you draw the expressions every time

Honestly, a bit of both! Let's pull back the curtain, shall we?

This is one of my expression sheets for Omega.

As you can see, he has a few similar "chassis heads" I like to reuse. You can see them replicated even in this single sheet. This is done VERY intentionally because I want to give the feeling that he is working with a limited number of images (Mikey, bless his heart, can't be drawing for him all the time).

HOWEVER, it is also sort of an illusion. Because often times after adding one of these heads to the comic panel, I'll go in and slightly rework the expression to better fit the moment. Also, sometimes I'll be drawing him for silly art or on a different computer where I don't have my sheets available, and if I like how it looks it gets added to the sheet later for further use.

I have several more such expression sheets but many of them are older and I don't like the look of them anymore. Even some of the ones in here feel a bit dated. Over time they'll continue to be pushed out and replaced as my style changes and ability to draw him improves.
