Obscure Animation Subject #168: Anime Shūkan DX! Mi-Pha-Pu
An anime television series produced by Toei Animation, which aired on TV Asahi from February 14, 1998 to February 6, 1999 for 48 episodes. The episodes usually feature 3 7-minute segments which each revolve around different series, Fushigi Mahou Fan Fan Pharmacy, Heli-Tako Pū-chan and Kocchi Muite! Miiko.
The characters who introduced the segments were Nyarome and Kemunpas, characters from Mōretsu Atarō created by Fujio Akatsuka, which would be for a future subject.
Fushigi Mahou Fan Fan Pharmacy is a magical girl series about Popuri, a girl who recently moved to a small pharmacy called Fun Fun Pharmacy, and meets a witch named Miss Fukiko, who gives her a mysterious bottle that creates magic spirits. This is the only series included in all 48 episodes since a few stories run for a half-hour.
Tumblr media
Heli-Tako Pū-chan is based on the manga by Sasaki Takemaru, and follows the adventures and hijinks of a strange red octopus creature.
Tumblr media
Kocchi Muite! Miiko is based on the comedy manga by Eriko Ono, and follows the life of a fifth grader named Miiko Yamada

i finished fushigi mahou fun fun pharmacy like a month ago on lsd and it made me sob. i already liked it a lot before that, but i'm really glad i saw the latter half on psychedelics.
it had an incredibly profound effect on me to say the least lol. thinking about it and seeing screenshots i took of it a month later still make me cry.
it's so important to me i don't even like the idea of explaining how good it is or encouraging people to watch it. having 4 hr youtube video essays made about it and osmosing like, lain and undertale fans would make me want to blow my brains out. lol

Popuri for the magical girl index!  I remember seeing her in a fighting game and her being my main even though I knew nothing about her, later on I finally found Fushigi Mahou Fan Fan Pharmacy and came to love Popuri even more. From her fashion sense to her personality she is definitely one of my all time favorite magical girls.

Hey there? On the search for genuinely good classic/modern magical girl/boy series without any problematic subject matter (age-gap romances, incest, heavy sexualization of minors/fanservice, petty in-fighting (I'm looking at you, Wedding Peach)), heavily tears down the reputation/ideals of the genre or going into grimdark territory/kills off the main character/multiple characters for pointless shock value (I'm looking at you, Minky Momo)? Then you've come to the right post!

Episode 43 of Fun Fun Pharmacy is without a doubt the most beautiful and fascinating of the series, both in writing and art direction of the episode.
I recommed watching the other episodes that aired before this one too, though, because it gave a great conclusion to a question that has been raised early on in the series.
