(CW: pet whump, broken bones, fear of punishment, dissociation)
Alex Fortery was... strange. That was the conclusion Tobias had come to; he'd adjust said conclusion as needed as more information came along.
He not only had some strange habits, but he also was strangely unsure of his position. Tobias would have expected the heir of a vampire crime family to be self-assured to the point of arrogance, but Alex was the opposite.
And he had family issues that could rival Tobias's own, which was saying something.
Tobias talked Alex through how to bandage and splint his broken arms. The vampire seemed to zone out, following Tobias's instructions like he was in a trance. Even once he had finished, he just kept standing there like he expected more instructions to come.
Tobias watched him warily. He didn't know how to handle this. He most definitely wasn't going to keep giving instructions to a Fortery. He'd like to keep his remaining bones in one piece, thanks.
Eventually the stalemate was broken by a chirp from a cell phone. Alex flinched at the noise, then grabbed the device.
“Evelyn,” he said, blinking rapidly.
Tobias was going to casually sit here and look like he wasn't paying attention. Eavesdropping on a conversation between the Fortery siblings was too good an opportunity to pass up.
"No, not busy," Alex said, "and yes, we know where to go, just waiting for the word.”
He frowned at whatever Evelyn was saying. “Blood? You want me to get you blood?”
What Tobias wouldn't give for the ability to hear both sides of the conversation. Did they not keep blood on hand? Or, well, did Evelyn not keep blood on hand? Why would Alex have blood and Evelyn not?
“Is it for the girl?” Alex asked, still sounding baffled.
Based on Alex's next statement, the answer was no. “So you are saying that you want to drink the blood I drink? That blood? You from all people want to drink this blood?”
What the hell kind of difference did it make? Blood was blood, right? Or did blood types make it taste different, with different vampires preferring different types like wine snobs with their favorite vineyards?
Evelyn apparently didn't appreciate Alex's tone. His next words were far more conciliatory. “Yes, yes, sorry, I’ll take it. I’ll be there in a bit.”
With that, the vampire hung up. He glared at Tobias and shot a worried glance towards the kid.
"You, stay here," he ordered Tobias.
Tobias bit back the possible knee-jerk sarcastic reactions to that, either a mocking yes, sir with matching salute, or a bark to make a point about how he didn't appreciate being commanded like a dog. He was trying to not get any more bones broken.
Instead, he gave a simple, "Got it."

Alex grabbed one blood bag and was about to turn around before thinking better, one would be enough for him it wouldn't be nearly enough to actually make a difference to Evelyn, so he took three just to be sure.
He turned to the boy and used the more soft voice he could, "Listen, you can stay here for now, but later I'll go out with Tobias and you can't simply come with us, so it would be better to go to your room. I know you're afraid those people will show up again, but they won't, okay?" at least not for a while.
From the boy's face, Alex could see that he didn't believe a single word, which is to be expected, Alex already failed so many times in protecting him, it would be weird if the boy thought of him as someone skilled enough to truly keep harm away.
Alex sighed tiredly, "Do you remember the talk they had with Evelyn back then? About a deal? Said deal say that they can't come here often, since it has been a short time since the last visit it'll take a while for them to come back, and besides them, no one here will pose danger to you." It was a bad memory to recall, principally when said talk was going one at the same time Evelyn's arm was being broken, but it was the only way to get his point through.
The boy seemed to think about it for a while before hesitantly nodding, Alex could feel that if something were to happen again that boy would never again trust him.
"Thank you," he said, patting the boy's head. "I'll be back really quickly."

When Master was gone, the boy wanted to ask again why it is a pet and the man isn't, but the man didn't want to answer, so instead, it crawled to the other side of the kitchen —there was no need to be near the table anymore— and knelt quietly, watching the man warily.
Okay. It's okay if he doesn't want to talk about humans, the boy has questions about vampires too, it could ask Master but he would be uncomfortable with the question, it was sure.
Talking was hard, sometimes more than others, but maybe the necessity to know was greater this time, Humans are food, humans are pets, but vampires no, so why? "W-why the girl is a pet?" it asked, looking down, hoping Ma'am Evelyn would keep Master away long enough for it to get an answer.
