Your EDM Interview: Carbone Is Bringing BS1 Records Back, and That Means New Tracks and Sample Packs

Davide Carbone is famous in drum and bass for his cohesive, well-rounded and technically clean tracks but also for creating BS1 records, an entity in DnB that’s now famous on its own. Not only did BS1 release a blitz of amazing tracks in its heyday, shedding light on some of the biggest names in the genre like TC, Kubiks and Lomax and even Carl Cox, but their website was ground zero for all the best DnB sample packs for many years. This free resource made them much-loved among up-and-coming DnB producers and with no hyperbole needed, helped to push drum and bass to the amazing level of quality and output it has today.

BS1 sample packs are still widely used and now, with the release of Carbone’s first singles in four years, and the announcement that he’ll be kicking the label and the website back into high gear, it looks like they’ll continue for a long time. Your EDM sat down with Carbone to talk shop about the label and also about the new stunningly smooth pairing of “Abruzzo” and “The Upside Down.” We learned that indeed the sample packs are coming back, but we also found out why Carbone is so passionate about releasing those packs, who will be releasing on BS1 shortly and sharing that passion, and how his passion for all the many and sundry parts of drum and bass may still be one of the most important things pushing it forward. What made you decide to bring back BS1 Records at this time?

My love for DnB basically. BS1 hasn’t really gone away it’s just not got any love from me over the past seven or so years because I have been heavily committed to other music projects mainly writing for video games and other artists. BS1 for me has always been a special label so I was never going to let it disappear!

Will you be continuing your previous tradition of doing lots of sample packs and making them easily accessible?

Yes, I still make sounds for lots of different projects, and I am constantly overwhelmed with artists’ praise for the BS1 samples of the past. I wouldn’t make another commercially available sample CD like “Davide Carbone’s Drum and Bass Masterclass” from Loopmasters but I will absolutely keep making sample packs for the site and ask artists to do so too! A brand new one on site mid August! 

What’s your new vision for BS1 going forward?

A nice mix of my own music interspersed with new artists and remixes from established artists. Our next release features a really incredible remix from Hospital artist Royalston which shows him at the top of his game. It’s amazing!

Getting into the tracks, these two are very different style-wise, and of course we know BS1 was also known for its diversity of artists back in the early days. Did you feel you wanted to put out tracks like “Abruzzo” and “The Upside Down” to advertise that that diversity will still be a part of the label?

Yes I think DnB is great because it can be liquid, it can be hard. Or it can be more club or more outdoor festival. I fully intend to take advantage of that diversity and allow artists to be creative in exploring that diversity. We always had a very different A and B side and that will continue.

Your own style when it comes to production is also all over the board, but you still make some of the most cohesive tracks out there. How do you get all those seemingly competing sounds to merge and sound fluid?

Thanks for the compliment. Production has always been an area I have thoroughly enjoyed and to be fair probably what I am most renowned for. As I espouse in my Production Masterclass at the School of Synthesis, it’s a combination of tried and tested production techniques adapted to suit modern engineering practices. Knowing and understanding the fundamentals of EQ and dynamic processing is key, and then being comfortable in implementing color before mastering is important. Keeping dynamics whilst aiming for loudness is more relevant than ever. There’s some good tips on the BS1 site!

A lot of the technology and style preferences have changed in DnB since BS1 last released tracks. How do you feel you merged the soul of the older styles with what’s possible production-wise today in “Abruzzo” and “The Upside Down”? Was it challenging or did it just seem like a natural thing to you?

Creativity is hard at any time of your career. That aside I have been making music every day since I was a teenager and I have been making so much music over the past ten years that I am very fortunate to have a quick workflow. Having said that “Abruzzo” and “The Upside Down” were both written in moments that I had no intention of writing music! Hence the magic and difficulty of creativity!

You’ve got a few big names releasing on BS1 in the near future. What kind of stuff can we expect to see?

Really good music hopefully! Next up is a Royalston remix of a new tune featuring Amy Kirkpatrick, who is a wonderful and well-established vocalist. Royaslton’s remix has to be heard really, it’s blown us away! Carl Cox has been loving his DnB and has gotten involved with some BS1 tracks and we are working with a couple of new London-based artists. 

Will you yourself be doing any touring/shows this season?

No not this season, maybe next.

Stellar Lumens, IOTA, Tron, Litecoin and EOS Price Technical Analysis (June 2, 2018)

Besides Tron which is nose diving after prices broke below 5.5 cents main support, IOTA and Stellar Lumens are strong buy candidates. IOTA did get a boost with DNB ASA MoU while Stellar is technically a buy with no strong fundamentals to back it. EOS on the other hand will prove their assertions today with their mainnet launch. We anticipate bullish pressure but should they collapse below $10 then it’s time to sell from Sunday on-wards.

It’s a day to EOS mainnet launch and while we want to see concrete preparations like announcements of official wallets and things like those, Block One is busy moving ETH. Solid data shows that within 24 hours before an important event, EOS did move about 200,000 ETH to a BitFinex account via their OTC desk.

This effectively upped EOSIO ETH expenditure this month to a whopping 1.75 million ETH. That’s up from 1.25 million month over month meaning that they have effectively drained their crowd funding smart contract account. Their yearlong ICO came to a close yesterday and all focus is today’s mainnet launch that shall test the resilience of EOSIO and Dan Larimer.

Our EOS trade plan remains the same as yesterday’s because of the slow movement in price action. As long as EOS prices trend within May 24 high low this horizontal movement shall continue being a consolidation and a spring board for a possible explosion or collapse. Today shall be D-Day for EOS and whether prices shall mirror TRX’s we don’t know. Let’s wait and see.

For now though, if Tron has solid plans of usurping Ethereum then you realize that there is a chance that there is some under-valuation. Anyway, like Ethereum was back in the day, let’s see if Tron shall behave once the TestNet is over.

On the charts, there is a break below 5.5 cents meaning we shall sell today. It seems like bears are following the rhythm set by May 28 sell bar and all we have to do is short on every over valuation and aim for 5 cents and later 4 cents.

Like yesterday, I really think IOTA is edging higher. Technicals support this view and with news as such, IOTA apparently rides on good vibes. It’s a straight buy on dips with targets at $3 and stops at $1.7.

‘Central Bank Digital Currencies Could Destabilize the Global Economy’ Says Bank for International Settlements (BIS)

While the central banks of some countries are hoping to be a part of the virtual currency revolution, the Bank for International Settlements (BIS) is concerned about the repercussions of going digital.

A cashless society is definitely the way of the future, a future that some governments and banks are trying to be a part of. Central bank digital currencies (CBDCs) may be an abomination of decentralized cryptocurrencies, but it is happening.

Sweden’s Riksbank is hoping to offer its e-Krona and the Bank of England has a cryptocurrency unit to help it along its virtual currency journey.

BIS Voices its Concerns

However, according to Business Insider UK, the Bank for International Settlements (BIS) has stated that these bank-issued virtual currencies could have dire consequences for the global financial system.

A report written by Klaus Löber, who is a Senior Advisor at the European Central Bank (ECB) and Aerdt Houben, who is the Director of the Financial Stability Division at De Nederlandsche Bank (DNB), details the negative impact it could have on the economy.

According to this report, these virtual currencies could become direct competition for traditional fiat, which could lead to an increase in interest rates.

The report states:

The introduction of a central bank digital currency (CBDC) would raise fundamental issues that go far beyond payment systems and monetary policy transmission and implementation. A general purpose CBDC could give rise to higher instability of commercial bank deposit funding. Even if designed primarily with payment purposes in mind, in periods of stress a flight towards the central bank may occur on a fast and large scale, challenging commercial banks and the central bank to manage such situations. Introducing a central bank digital currency could result in a wider presence of central banks in financial systems.

The report went on to say that as a result, there could be a “greater role for central banks in allocating economic resources, which could entail overall economic losses should such entities be less efficient than the private sector in allocating resources.”

The report added that it might not only be the economic sector that could face repercussions:

It could move central banks into uncharted territory and could also lead to greater political interference.

The Dangers of Bitcoin, According To BIS

This is not the first time that the BIS has spread FUD about critiqued cryptocurrencies. Its General Manager, Agustin Carstens, previously stated that they are a “threat to financial stability” and that Bitcoin, in particular, is “a combination of a bubble, a Ponzi scheme and an environmental disaster.”

Jacqueline Loh, who is the chair of the BIS markets committee, added:

Any step towards a possible launch of a CBDC should be subject to careful and thorough consideration.

Impact on Solvency

The head of Germany’s Bundesbank, Jens Weidmann has also been vocal on the implications of CBDCs. On a positive note, he had previously said:

“Allowing the public to hold claims on the central bank might make their liquid assets safer, because a central bank cannot become insolvent.”

However, he added that in times of economic uncertainty, citizens would most likely convert their fiat into the country’s official digital currency, which is great for the public but not for the banks. This easy conversion could make bank runs occur more frequently, which could then negatively impact the bank’s solvency.

Introducing a central bank digital currency could result in a wider presence of central banks in financial systems.

The report went on to say that as a result, there could be a “greater role for central banks in allocating economic resources, which could entail overall economic losses should such entities be less efficient than the private sector in allocating resources.”

The report added that it might not only be the economic sector that could face repercussions:
