Helping farmers, fisherfolk weather Covid-19, ASF outbreaks
#PHnews: Helping farmers, fisherfolk weather Covid-19, ASF outbreaks
MANILA – The Department of Agriculture was banking on 2020 to be a rebound year after it experienced a major setback last year due to “birth pains" of the implementation of the Rice Tariffication Law (RTL).
“The year opened with rice prices at stable levels, inflation in check, and the full implementation of the Rice Competitiveness Enhancement Fund (RCEF), a component under RTL, in full swing. The ASF outbreaks were also manageable through heightened quarantine measures nationwide,” Agriculture Secretary William Dar said in a statement on Wednesday.
However, Dar said a series of unfortunate events occurred, “quite literally–beyond the control of man.”
Taal Volcano eruption
The country’s most active volcano has swept 15,970 hectares of agricultural areas when it erupted in January.
Coffee, cacao, pineapple, rice, coconut, and other high value crops in Calabarzon were damaged costing PHP3.06 billion, while the fisheries sector sustained PHP1.6 billion in losses.
The DA shouldered crop insurance, livelihood, seeds and seedlings, and farm machinery, among other donations, to the affected farmers and fisherfolk worth some PHP2.708 million.
DA said this is on top of the PHP160 million worth of interventions given to farm communities affected by the eruption.
African swine fever
The spread of the African swine fever (ASF) has penetrated parts of Mindanao despite the elevated quarantine measures.
DA said it engineered a multi-pronged approach to prevent and control the disease as well as the recovery of the industry.
“In testing, specifically, the government is making significant headway with the soon-to-be-launched locally developed test kit which has greater detection rate, and our recent opening of a modern animal disease diagnostic facility in Tarlac City,” Dar said.
Dar reported that the hog industry incurred PHP56 billion in losses due to ASF.
With a total budget of PHP280 million, the facilities will be put up in Magalang, Pampanga; in Tanauan and San Jose, Batangas; and in Malagos, Davao.
Record-high rice production
Despite the pandemic, the series of strong typhoons, and low farm gate prices, rice production even increased by 0.6 percent to 7.54 million metric tons in the fourth quarter compared to last year’s output of 7.49 million metric tons.
Around 322,041 metric tons of palay (unmilled rice) were lost due to the typhoons, equivalent to eight days of rice consumption.
Yield per hectare went up by 1.48 percent to 4.13 metric tons from 4.07 metric tons.
Rice production would have been higher at 19.86 MMT if it were not for the loss of 419,560 MT of palay due to the typhoons that hit the country.
For 2021, a conservative production of 20.48 MMT to a high of 20.66 MMT is targeted.
Corn production, on the other hand, increased by 1.2 percent to 1.68 million metric tons from 1.66 MMT recorded in 2019.
Yield per hectare went up 0.67 percent to 2.99 MT from 2.97 MT.
The gross value added of the agriculture sector went up 4.1 percent to PHP404.6 billion during the fourth quarter.
Food resiliency action plan
DA imposed a list of suggested retail prices (SRP) for agri-fishery commodities that will be covered by the price freeze.
“The action helped prevent spikes in prices of basic farm commodities during the protracted community quarantine. The agency also strengthened its Bantay Presyo Task Force to monitor prices of basic agricultural commodities, enforce the SRP policy, and go against cartels, hoarders, and profiteers,” Dar added.
DA also implemented the Duterte administration’s “Plant, Plant, Plant” program or “Ahon Lahat, Pagkaing Sapat (ALPAS) Laban sa Covid-19” program to benefit farmers, fishers and consumers.
Other projects that will be funded under this program are additional palay procurement fund of the National Food Authority; expanded SURE Aid and recovery project; expanded agriculture insurance project; social amelioration for farmers and farm workers; upscaling of KADIWA ni Ani at Kita direct marketing program; integrated livestock and corn resiliency project; expanded small ruminants and poultry project; coconut-based diversification project; fisheries resiliency project; revitalized urban agriculture and gulayan project; corn for food project; and strategic communications project.
Credit programs with flexible payment scheme
The Agricultural Credit and Policy Council (ACPC) responded to the financing needs of small farmers and fishers (SFFs) and agri and fishery-based micro and small enterprises (MSEs) to motivate upward movement in the industry despite the challenges.
To entice the youth and start-ups, the ACPC introduced Kapital Access for Young Agripreneurs (KAYA) and the AgriNegosyo (ANYO) Loan Program early this year.
In April 2020, it implemented the SURE Aid and Recovery Project (SURE COVID-19) for SFFs and MSEs whose livelihoods, agribusiness operations, and incomes were affected by the health crisis.
SURE COVID-19 is a component of the Bayanihan to Heal as One Act (Bayanihan 1) and the Bayanihan to Recover as One Act (Bayanihan 2).
Dar said ACPC’s 104 partner lending conduits released a total of PHP2.03 billion to 48,375 SFFs and 148 MSEs.
In addition, some PHP444.30 million loans were granted to 28,259 SFFs affected by the ASF, Taal Volcano eruption and typhoons; PHP151.21 million loans to 5,468 SFFs under the Production Loan Easy Access (PLEA) using program collections as revolving credit funds (reflows); and PHP19.50 million loans to four MSEs/Farmers & Fisherfolk Organizations (FFOs) under Capital Loan Easy Access (CLEA) and Agricultural Machineries and Equipment (AFME) Loan Programs which remained operational until subsumed under ANYO.
Engaging the IPs
As a way to hit two birds in one stone, Dar also kicked off the initiative to transform portions of vast ancestral lands nationwide into food production areas.
The National Commission on Indigenous Peoples (NCIP) said about 7.7 million hectares are owned by the Indigenous Peoples (IP), or about 26 percent of the country’s total land area of 30 million hectares.
As of 2019, the NCIP has issued 243 certificates of ancestral domain titles, with a total land area of 5.7 million hectares and a total of 1.3 million IPs as rights holders.
“Aside from profitable types of vegetables -- like onion, string beans, potato, carrots, pineapple, garlic, cauliflower, and watermelon -- our IPs can grow cacao, coffee, abaca or black pepper, or they may go into raising native pigs and free-range chicken. Other crops include bitter melon, asparagus, cabbage, cassava, garlic, ginger, mungbean, papaya, peanut, sweet potato, and tomato,” Dar said.
Coco levy fund
One of the welcoming reports this year, Dar said, was Congress’ passage on the third and final reading of House Bill 8136 or the proposed Coconut Farmers and Development Trust Fund Act.
DA is optimistic that the bicameral conference committee will swiftly approve the measure seeking to create a trust fund for the country’s coconut farmers before both chambers of Congress go on holiday recess this Christmas season.
Digital agriculture
Meanwhile, DA partnered with the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) to launch Deliver-E, a modernized marketing process connecting food producers to consumers sans the unnecessary trading layers.
To help farmers recover, the Philippine Crop Insurance Corporation (PCIC) released about PHP347 million to help rebuild the lives and livelihoods of insured farmers and fisherfolk who have been heavily affected by extreme weather disturbances that hit the country.
The payment represents the initial payment on the PHP1.5-billion worth of estimated damages reported by PCIC’s clients in PCIC’s seven administrative regions.
Positive outlook
The Philippine Statistics Authority reported that the Philippines recorded a Gross Domestic Product (GDP) rate of -11.5 percent in the third quarter of 2020, compared with the previous quarter’s -16.9 percent.
The industries that contributed the least to the GDP were construction, -39.8 percent; real estate and ownership of dwellings, -22.5 percent; and manufacturing, -9.7 percent.
On the other hand, the top three industries that posted positive rates were: financial and insurance activities, 6.2 percent; public administration and defense, compulsory social activities, 4.5 percent; and agriculture, forestry, and fishing, at 1.2 percent.
It was the same picture in the second and first quarters of 2020.
GDP dropped by 16 percent in the second quarter of 2020, the lowest recorded quarterly growth, from the 1981 base year.
The main contributors to the decline were: manufacturing, -21.3 percent; construction, -33.5 percent; and transportation and storage, -59.2 percent.
Among the major economic sectors, only agriculture, forestry, and fishing increased with 1.6 percent growth.
Industry and services both decreased during the period by 22.9 percent and 15.8 percent, respectively.
For 2021, the DA targets to attain a "conservative" 2.5 percent growth.
"The COVID-19 pandemic wreaked havoc on the global and national economy. But no matter what happens, people must eat. For this reason alone, agriculture registered positive contributions to the economy compared to the other movers of the economy such as construction, real estate, and manufacturing," Dar said. (PNA)

We take a look at the best golf simulators on the market in 2019, and show you how to build a full home setup for under $1K.
Tumblr media
Fed up waking up pumped for your round, only to find out the course is flooded? Can’t be bothered heading to the driving range? Then you need a home golf simulator. We’ve picked out the 2 best golf simulators in 2020, with one setup that can be built for under $1K, and a high end simulator for those with bigger budgets.
Summary: 2020’s Best Golf Simulators
We’ll dig into the ‘why’ in a moment with full reviews, but in summary there’s really no contest. If you’re looking for an affordable setup, which you can put together for under $1,000 including net, mat etc (separate purchases) then go for the OptiShot2. If you have a bigger budget, and are looking for a simulator that will give you more feedback on your swing and accurate ball flight and launch conditions, then you need a SkyTrak system.
Best Affordable Golf Simulator In 2020
Think you’re going to have to outlay thousands of bucks for a home golf simulator?
Think again.
The OptiShot 2 is the world’s best selling golf simulator, and the good news is you’ll be able to pick it up for well under $500. In fact, at the time of writing it’s actually under $300.
Let’s see what you get.
OptiShot 2 Golf Simulator Review
First, let me clarify that what you are buying here is the ‘brains’ of the golf simulator (which includes tracking mat and sensor).
Do you need anything else?
Well, no, and yes…
If you buy the OptiShot 2 and nothing else (assuming you already have golf clubs), you can set it up, plug it into your laptop or PC, and swing away anywhere that you have room for a full golf swing.
You don’t even need to hit a golf ball, as the OptiShot will track the shot as if you had.
You’ll get to see the results of your shot on your computer screen straight away.
But with that being said, if you have the budget, a few extra bits and bobs (and a bit of DIY) will add to your home golf simulator experience. We’ll get to that shortly, but for now let’s carry on with the review.
The OptiShot 2: What You Get
Here’s what you’ll get in the box when you buy the OpiShot2:
Infrared Optical Swing Pad
OptiShot Golf 3D Software
USB Cable (10ft)
Foam Balls (x2)
Adjustable Rubber Tees
Some packages also include extra swing pad replacement turf and a longer USB cable (15 ft). The longer USB cable is certainly useful, but if you buy without it no biggy as you can pick up an extra long USB cable pretty cheap.
How Does The OptiShot 2 Work?
The OptiShot’s swing pad contains 16 infrared optical sensors, which track your club through the hitting area. These 48MHz sensors emit thousands of pulses per second.
Why did I bold your club?
Because the OptiShot is not a launch monitor. It doesn’t track the flight of your ball, it tracks your club head.
So what does this mean for stats?
What Stats Does The OptiShot 2 Track?
For each swing you’ll be able to see:
Distance
Clubhead Speed
Face Angle
Path
Tempo
When I compared the distances reported by the OptiShot 2, to actual yardages measured on the course with my Garmin golf GPS, they were pretty close.
The system will record the stats so you can review averages for each club.
As the OptiShot does not track ball flight, you won’t get stats for launch angle or angle of attack.
But you will get to see an approximation of your ball flight on screen. And obviously if you’re hitting balls (be they real or foam) you’ll know how well you hit it.
Now let’s look at the software, and what you’ll see on screen.
What’s The OptiShot2’s Game Play Like?
I’m going to call this game play, because (aside from getting some useful feedback on your swing stats) really that’s what it is.
And yes, you can actually play a round of golf.
In fact, you can play (at least virtually) on some of the world’s best golf courses, including:
The Golf Club Scottsdale
Long Island Black
Torrey White
Torrey Black
Palm Desert Mountains
Palm Desert Canyons
Barsebäck Golf Club
Black Mountain
The Canadian Club
Österåkers Golf Club
West Maui Plantation
Warwick Hills Golf & Country Club
Fylde Links
Cogs Corner
Twisted Twig
You can even play peer-to-peer against other golfers online.
Or you can just sharpen up your swing on the driving range:
Cool huh?
As I mentioned at the start of this review, all you need to do is hook your OptiShot2 Swing Pad up to your laptop or PC, and you’ll see your shot on screen instantly.
It’s an impressive piece of kit for a great price.
OptiShot2: Our Verdict
The OptiShot2 is without doubt the best affordable golf simulator available in 2020. For most golfers the available stats will be more than sufficient to tweak their swing, and the game play (and of course the simulation) is excellent.
Pros
Easy to setup (just plug it in and play)
Affordable
Swing stats including distance, speed, path, clubface angle
Play 15 real courses, or practice on the driving range
Play online against other golfers
Can be used with or without golf balls
Cons
Doesn’t track actual ball flight, so you’ll be missing angle of attack and launch angle
Not the most accurate golf simulator on the market
The Best Golf Simulator In 2020
Got a bigger budget to play with?
Need more stats and feedback on your swing?
Well now let’s look at the very best home golf simulator available this year: the SkyTrak Launch Monitor.
Note: We are assuming you don’t have a spare $50K lying around for Trackman. If you do, then technically that’s the absolute best. But this one is less than 1/20th of the price.
SkyTrak Launch Monitor Review
Let me start by saying this isn’t cheap. You won’t normally get much change out of $2,000.
But what it is, is awesome.
Unlike the OptiShot2, the SkyTrak is a launch monitor. It uses high speed cameras to capture images of the golf ball immediately after impact, so it can accurately project ball flight.
Which means you’ll get stats on ball speed, spin rates, launch angle and more.
SkyTrak Launch Monitor: What You Get
Here’s what’s in the box:
SkyTrak Launch Monitor
Protective Metal Case
And that’s all you need.
Wait… no wires?
Nope, the SkyTrak will connect wirelessly to your PC or tablet. It doesn’t even require Wi-Fi as it contains a built in Wi-Fi hotspot. Which means you can literally take it anywhere.
So while we’re focusing on home use here, you could (if you wanted) take the SkyTrak with you to the range and get stats on all your shots.
How Does The SkyTrak Launch Monitor Work?
SkyTrak is a photometric launch monitor.
That means that instead of using a radar to track ball flight (as some other high end launch monitors do), SkyTrak actually captures images of your ball in flight for the first few feet post impact.
From these images the system is able to accurately project the rest of the shot, both in terms of distance and direction.
What Stats Does The SkyTrak Launch Monitor Track?
As well as being able to see an accurate represenation of your ball flight on screen, SkyTrak provides a ton of useful stats, including:
Total distance
Carry distance
Club speed
Ball speed
Launch angle
Side spin
Back spin
Spin axis
Side angle
What’s The SkyTrak’s Simulator Like?
If you watched the video above, you’ll already have seen just how impressive SkyTrak’s simulator looks.
You’ll get an extremely accurate playback of your shot on screen, and when part of a full setup, it really is just like being at the driving range.
SkyTrak Launch Monitor: Our Verdict
With the excellent stats, easy setup, fantastic simulator, and relatively affordable price compared to some other leading launch monitors, the Skytrak gets our vote for the best golf simulator of 2020.
Pros
Easy to setup

We’re not the only ones that picked the SkyTrak. GolfDigest chose it as the best value golf simulator this year.
How To Build A Full Home Golf Simulator Setup For Under $1,000
Want to take your home golf simulator experience to the next level?
Here’s everything you need to setup a home driving range.
And best of all, the whole kit and kaboodle will cost you under $1,000
OptiShot2 System
You’ll need a simulator (the brains of your setup), and as we’ve already covered above, the OptiShot2 is the best affordable golf simulator on the market in 2020.
Projector
For the best playing experience, you’ll want to use the simulator with a projector (and screen).
There are a ton of cheap projectors around, but we would recommend investing $300 or so on a good quality unit.
At the end of the day, you’re doing this to see your golf shots (it’s a simulator), so you don’t want to be looking at a dim, faded image on screen.
We recommend the Epson VS250, which has a colour brightness of 3,200 lumens. That should be enough to get a clear image on your projector in most light conditions.
Projector Screen
A projector screen shouldn’t cost too much and you should be able to pick one up for under $50.
We like this one from Excelvan, which can be used both indoors and outdoors.
It has a viewing area of 104” x 58”, and a 16:9 aspect ratio.
Golf Mat
The OptiShot2 has its own Swing Pad. But it’s slightly raised, so we would recommend purchasing a golf mat so you are standing at the same level (and on astroturf).
This mat from Orlimar is supplied with an inset for the OptiShot pre cut into the turf.
Driving Net
You don’t want to be smashing golf balls into your projector screen.
It won’t last long.
So, you’ll need to purchase a driving net to place in front of it.
There are a ton of affordable driving nets available.
This 10x7ft net from Rukket will do the trick and it’s normally available for under $150.
If you have a bigger budget to play with, go for the Net Return Pro, which will automatically return your balls to you.
You should be able to pick up all of the above for under $1,000.
How To Setup Your Home Simulator
On the most basic level, all you need to do is put your projector screen on a wall and set up the net in front of it to catch golf balls.
Then setup your simulator, project from your PC or laptop to the projector screen, place your mat in front of the net and hit away.
It’s probably best to have a defined space for this (with nothing too breakable). A spare room or garage will suffice.
But if you want to try something a little more sophisticated (or are a DIY nut), then you could try and build your own wooden enclosure for your simulator.
Something like this…
Which is definitely the coolest thing we’ve seen today.
So let’s recap:
Home Golf Simulator: What You'll Need
Simulators:
Best Affordable Golf Simulator: OptiShot2
Best Overall Golf Simulator: SkyTrak Launch Monitor
Also required for a full home golf simulator setup:
Projector: Epson VS250
Projector Screen: from Excelvan
Golf Mat: from Orlimar
Driving Net: Rukket or Net Return Pro
If you have a bit more budget, our friends at Golficity have a nice guide on putting together a home setup for under $2k.

Sony launches ZV-1 compact camera for content creators and vloggers
Sony has launched the ZV-1 compact camera, designed for video content creators and vloggers. The camera is similar to the company’s RX100 series but has been optimized more for video capture and for recording yourself.
The ZV-1 has a 20.1MP 1.0″-type stacked Exmor RS CMOS sensor plucked out of the RX100 VII. The lens is an older 24-70mm used in the RX100 cameras from RX100 III to the RX100 V and not the newer 24-200 used in later RX100 models. While this means you have less reach, the older lens had a faster f1.8-2.8 aperture range versus the f2.8-4.5 on the newer models.
Furthermore, the ZV-1 also features a built-in ND filter, which was a feature on RX100 from Mark III to V, and enables shooting in very bright light with a slower shutter speed or wider aperture.
The ZV-1 can record video in 4K with full-pixel readout without binning in 24 or 30fps. You can also shoot slow motion video in 240fps, 480fps or 960fps. There’s built-in interval shooting for time-lapse videos and support for HLG, S-Log3, and S-Gamut3.Cine for those who want to color grade or have an HDR workflow. There’s also built-in optical and digital image stabilization.
One of the main features of the ZV-1 is the fully articulating display, a first for a compact Sony camera that so far only featured screens that tilted up or down. The ZV-1 display can swing and face forward, making it extremely easy to see yourself while recording and doesn’t get obscured by any accessory attached on top of the camera, like a microphone, as is the case with flip up displays. It’s a 3.0-inch panel with 921k dot LCD and touch support for focusing.
The ZV-1 offers a Background Defocus feature, which can be activated by a dedicated button next to the shutter release. Pressing the button causes the camera to blur your background by adjusting the aperture and you can switch back and forth without having to mess around with the aperture manually. If you don’t wish to use this feature, the button can be assigned some other function through the menu.
The ZV-1 autofocus system has also been optimized to work with objects with the new Product Showcase mode. Normally, when recording yourself, the camera would lock the focus on your face, so if you hold something in front of the camera to show your audience, the object would be out of focus. With this mode, holding something in front of the camera causes the autofocus to momentarily snap on to the object and then go back to face tracking once the object is off-screen. This is designed for content creators who do things like makeup tutorials or product videos where they need to showcase the product but also later have the focus shift to them without having a dedicated camera operator.
The auto exposure has also been optimized to prioritize faces on the ZV-1. If you suddenly go from a dark to bright environment, the exposure would adjust automatically to keep your face from being overexposed and blown out. Sony has also optimized the color science further on this camera for more natural skin tones in all lighting conditions.
The ZV-1 also features a new built-in microphone system, with a directional 3-capsule mic that is optimized to pickup sounds in front of the camera and ignore things happening on the side and back of the camera. A wind screen is provided to reduce noise on windy days. The camera also has a microphone jack for attaching external microphones directly to the camera. No headphone jack here as you wouldn’t really be monitoring audio while filming yourself but would have been nice to do a quick audio check before you started rolling.
There’s also a micro HDMI if you want to output to an external recorder or capture card. The USB port still uses microUSB but at least allows you to charge the battery while the camera is in use. Unfortunately, there’s no charger provided so you have to charge the battery internally unless you purchase the optional charger.
Finally, Sony is also offering an optional and atrociously named accessory called the GP-VPT2BT Shooting Grip with Wireless Remote Commander, which lets you mount the camera and control it using the grip. It’s just a grip, however, and there is no stabilization built-in. The grip is part of a kit that also includes a 64GB memory card.
The Sony ZV-1 is priced at $749 and will go on sale in June. However, that’s the introductory price and it will go up to $799 after June 28. The Vlogger Kit with the grip and the SD card will set you back $99 if purchased with the camera before June 28 or $149 if purchase separately.

I’ve Never Flown a Drone. Here’s My Review of the DJI Mavic 2 Pro
Since the 2010 launch of the Parrot AR.Drone, consumer interest in drones has skyrocketed. DJI’s ubiquitous Phantom, originally released in 2013, has spawned multiple iterations and the company has further developed product lines like the Spark and Mavic to fill various niches and price points.
The drone has become another tool in the storytelling arsenal with its ability to capture incredibly high quality stills and video from a perspective that was once reserved for helicopters or expensive commercial units.
youtube
I’ve been tempted to join the drone game for years, but I’ve resisted the urge to dip my toe into the waters because the earliest units were too complicated, large, and expensive. I deferred my dream to other photographers and videographers who had more patience, skill, and need than me.
But over the years, my Instagram feed has been infiltrated with incredible aerial images, and after attending the launch of the DJI Mavic 2 Pro earlier this year, I decided it was time to take one out for a spin. I made my way to the DJI Offices in Soho to pick up a loaner unit, and was promptly asked, “Have you ever flown a drone before?”
“Nope.”
A brief in-person tutorial ensued, followed a few hours later by an email strongly suggesting that I also borrow a smaller, cheaper Spark to practice with. A perfectly reasonable request, which I quickly ignored!
If you’re accustomed to seeing those flying white rectangles (those are Phantoms), you might be surprised by the size and compactness of the Mavic 2. The propeller arms swing and fold into a unit the size of a brick, but significantly lighter. The radio frequency (RF) controller plugs into your smartphone giving you a pretty solid video feed. Omni-directional sensors help the drone avoid obstacles (at least in some flight modes), and the unit is pretty darn easy to fly, even for a neophyte.
Boogie Boarders. Photo by Allen Murabayashi
But let me pause here for a PSA.
The proliferation of drones has led the FAA to require a remote pilot certificate for commercial use. Although recreational use is exempt from this requirement, I spent a few hours familiarizing myself with the rules (e.g. no flying within 5 miles of an airport) and reviewing the airspace maps to get a clear understanding of my potential flight areas. Even little drones can cause devastating damage to aircraft wings, so all drone operators need to exercise caution.
I felt exhilarated the first time (and second and third) time I flew. The experience reminded me of learning to drive a car as a teen and getting on the highway for the first time – what a rush! Controlling the drone and seeing the live birdseye view is almost an ineffable feeling, and reviewing the images and video later on a large screen is incredibly satisfying.
Prepping the Unit
There are a plethora of YouTube videos on how to set-up your drone if you’re not inclined to read directions, and this was the route I took. In truth, set up is simple. In my mind, attaching the propellers was going to be a daunting task, but the design makes assembly nearly impossible to screw up.
The DJI Mavic 2 Pro features a Hasselblad camera with a 1″ sensor. Photo by Allen Murabayashi
Like other drones, the Mavic 2 connects to your smartphone (Android or iPhone) via the DJI Go app (your phone is used as the live monitor), while the controller provides the RF connection to the drone. I had to update the firmware on both devices and update the geofencing database – a mechanism on most consumer drones to avoid flying in restricted areas.
The “Fly More” kit (USD$139) gives you additional batteries and a charging hub that holds up to 4 batteries. But beware! The hub doesn’t charge batteries simultaneously – it charges them in sequence with priority given to the battery with the most charge.
Maiden Voyage
Orienting yourself in 3D space takes a while. It’s not hard to fly the drone at all, and by most accounts, the Mavic 2 is significantly quieter than most drones. The left joystick controls altitude and nose direction, and the right joystick controls forward, backward, left and right movement. But maintaining visual line-of-sight of the drone is challenging because it wasn’t intuitive to match what I saw on the screen with the position of the drone. The drone was often lower on the horizon that I anticipated, but still higher on the altimeter than I thought.
The approximately 30 minute battery flight time went by in a flash during my maiden flight. There was so much to see, and soon the controller’s low battery warning (which kicks in at 25% by default) was incessantly beeping. You’re definitely going to need multiple batteries for any serious use.
Stills
In 2015, DJI bought a minority stake in Hasselblad. In early 2017, the minority stake became a majority stake, and the Mavic 2 Pro’s camera is company’s first collaboratively designed drone camera featuring a 20MP 1” sensor – a pretty significant update from the Mavic Pro’s 1 / 2.3” sensor – and akin in size to the Sony RX100. The camera has a variable aperture (f/2.8 – f/11), an ISO range up to 12,800 and a field-of-view roughly equivalent to an iPhone (28mm on full-frame).

DJI also brags about integrating Hasselblad Natural Colour Solution, an optimized color profile that “delivers the best possible natural colors from the selected chip without having to select from multiple presets.” I did find the JPGs to be punchy with some images appearing with boosted saturation and contrast similar to something out of an iPhone or Pixel.
You can also shoot in RAW which yields a DNG file (not a Hasselblad 3FR file), which can be processed in your favorite image editing program, or you can download Hasselblad Phocus for free.
Mokoli’i island. Photo by Allen Murabayashi
The UI allows you to toggle between still and video modes. You can’t do both simultaneously, although you can obviously use a video grab if there is sufficient light. Taking a picture is accomplished by pressing the virtual shutter button, which momentarily freezes the display. There is a burst mode, but I opted to use the single shot mode. Timing became pretty essential.
Still photography has been my main interest, and I found taking pictures to be an intuitive process that yielded great results. It took a few days of shooting to find which angles I thought worked best from a birdseye view, but the results were worth it.
Sea wall. Photo by Allen Murabayashi
The camera’s light meter had a tendency to blow highlights. This was particularly noticeable when shooting video in high dynamic range situations. But you can dial in some exposure compensation, or set the camera in a completely manual mode.
Video
In the basic video mode, controlling camera and drone movement is completely manual. Although I had some complex camera movements in mind (e.g. circling a subject at a constant distance), my flying skills weren’t good enough to do it convincingly. Add in the ability to tilt the camera up and down, and you suddenly realize why DJI created pre-programmed modes.
For example, the drone can auto-track a subject, which also has the added benefit of enabling all of the omnidirectional collision avoidance sensors. And I have to tell you, seeing the drone track something or someone while avoiding things around it is pretty incredible. Tracking isn’t flawless with fast-moving subjects or when the camera loses contrast detection, but it’s good enough for many applications.
The camera supports DJI’s 10-bit Dlog-M Color Profile. For video amateurs like myself, this means that the tonally flatter output is easier to color grade in post. Because I’ve had very little experience grading footage, and don’t own any plug-in LUTs, I decided to stick with the out-of-camera H.264 4k video, and still came away impressed.
It’s also a testament to the gimbal. Even in situations where I was getting high wind speed warnings, the video was often incredibly stable. Clearly the state of consumer gimbal technology has improved to near professional quality levels – and DJI has leveraged their experience in their Ronin line of camera stabilizers.
But the gimbal can only do so much. In high wind areas, excessive movement will cause the jelly-like appearance of the rolling shutter.
youtube
Other Considerations
As a part of the drone’s start-up sequence, it calibrates an IMU, or inertial measurement unit. This bit of electronics is responsible for making sure the drone is where it thinks it is and is moving in the direction that it should be. As such, it’s somewhat sensitive to magnetic interference, and I was surprised to find things like metal fences and rebar in concrete sometimes caused the unit to throw an error.
Also, the unit that DJI lent me for this review started acting up after a couple of days. The process of connecting to the controller to the drone degraded and it became continually more difficult to pair until it stopped altogether.
I tried using the somewhat abysmally designed desktop software DJI Assistant 2 to try downgrading the firmware. But the software wouldn’t connect the Mavic 2 to my MacBook Pro.
I was so frustrated after spending hours trying to debug the unit, that I ended up buying my own Mavic 2 Pro at a local Best Buy, and that’s perhaps the best endorsement I can make of the unit. I had so much fun in the first few days of using the drone, that the thought of not having it for another week while visiting my parents in Hawai’i was unfathomable.
My unit performed flawlessly for the rest of the trip.
Conclusion
I ended up flying the Mavic 2 Pro every day. I even woke up before sunrise one morning to go flying, which is frankly unheard of for this night owl. Using a drone in a big city like New York is impractical (and mostly illegal), but in less densely populated areas of Hawai’i, it’s a dream.
Like a new lens, the drone is simply a tool that allows you to capture the world in a different way. And right now, I’m in the honeymoon phase. But with its ability to get you into positions you physically cannot occupy, drones seemingly offer more unusually creative perspectives – fueling my creatives juices and motivation.
Given that this was my first experience with a drone, I don’t really have any basis for comparison. But I can say even first time flyers will have no problem piloting the drone and capturing compelling content. It’s a compact, incredibly well-designed piece of hardware with stellar image quality. All of this to say that the Mavic 2 Pro is a pretty damn good piece of gear, and I can’t wait to “Go Fly” again.

Ryzen 2nd gen. vs. Ryzen 1st gen – What are the Improvements?
AMD released their new Ryzen line of processors back in 2017 and they have been performing quite well ever since. The main advantage of this particular line of CPUs is their capability to cope with multi-threaded tasks. Because the 1st generation was so well-accepted in the community, AMD announced a new generation of processors based on the Zen+ architecture which offers more cores as well as hyperthreading.
In case you’re waging on which one to invest in, take a moment and check our in-depth comparison of both generations of Ryzen as well as the advantages and shortcomings of both 1st gen. and 2nd gen. While most people think there isn’t much to talk about here, there are still some things you should be aware of before deciding whether to go with one or the other.
Ryzen 1st gen overview
When Ryzen 1st gen CPUs showed up in 2017, they were a sign of a revolution in both SMT (similar to Intel’s hyperthreading) and instructions-per-clock improvements in comparison to AMD’s previous generation. The TDP of these processors is 65W to 95W. What made Ryzen so desirable is its close performance to Intel’s Core I7 6800K and 6900K which are both significantly more expensive due to being aimed towards enthusiasts in lieu of regular users. On top of that, the aforementioned Intel’s CPUs have 6 and 8 cores respectively and draw 140W.
AMD’s precision boost uses data gathered by the Sense MI technology which allows the CPU to monitor itself accurate within milliamps, millivolts, milliwatts, and to a single degree Celsius. In other words, the innovative technology implemented in the Ryzen line allows it to tweak itself to the optimal performance one thousand times per second.
However, this would all be somewhat meaningless if it weren’t for the affordable price, which didn’t catch too many people off guard as it was expected from AMD, but it was still welcomed and appreciated. Ryzen brought competitiveness into the equation by offering a decent price while combining the high quality of production and incredible performance.
youtube
Ryzen 2nd gen overview
The second generation was launched in mid-April 2018. The new architecture has brought more cores and hyperthreading to the table which is why AMD is able to compete with Intel on the market. The most shocking thing about the new generation is the affordability of the new chips. In other words, the new chip offers a massive boost in comparison to other (older) architecture but is able to remain budget-friendly.
What we got with the second generation are higher boost clocks as XFR is applying to all cores and up to around 35% improvement in cache latency department which results in a 3% performance bump (claimed by AMD).   The memory support on the new X470 chipset has been bumped to 2933Mhz in comparison to X370’s 2666MHz. While this slight bump seems pretty irrelevant, a lot of benchmarks showed that it results in much better compatibility with high-speed memory kits. AMD also claims that thanks to the Zen+ architecture they have been able to offer higher clock speeds and better stability while keeping the power consumption at a reasonable level.
youtube
The differences and improvements
The first question many people ask is – “What are the differences between these two generations?” The short answer is – subtle performance improvements. While this may sound somewhat anticlimactic, the more in-depth look at these two chips reveals a much broader spectrum of differences both in gaming and synthetic benchmarks.
When it comes to gaming, there really aren’t many differences between the 1st and 2nd generation. For example, DeusEx: Mankind Divided showed an improvement of only a couple of frames per second, and the same applies to Far Cry 5. CS:GO yielded slightly better results, but most of them are pretty negligible.
On the other hand, the productivity benchmarks showed a much more dramatic swing in comparison to gaming benchmarks. For example, the Ryzen 2700X showed significantly better results than the last gen. 1800X in 7zip, Y-Cruncher, Cinebench R15, and ASUS RealBench benchmarks. Considering the fact that the Ryzen 1800X showed better performance than Intel’s Core I7 8700K, we can safely say that 8700K is greatly outperformed by the new generation of Ryzen processors as far as productivity tests go. It’s speculated that some of these improvements are directly linked to cache latency which saw a 25% jump in comparison to last gen.
Overclocking results are good, especially thanks to the auto-tweak feature which is designed to boost performance and be user-friendly at the same time. In other words, even if you never wanted to mess with overclocking because of the fear of hardware damage, you can do it safely now, and on top of that, you don’t need any previous overclocking experience whatsoever.
Power consumption is relatively decent, even though benchmarks showed that the Ryzen 7 2700X draws up to 170W under full load. That translates to higher thermal values meaning heavy overclocking is not recommended with the stock cooler as the chip can hit up to 88 degrees Celsius.
Final words
After these insights, one question remains unanswered – “Is the new generation greatly superior to the last one?”
The short answer is – Yes, it is superior, but only for certain applications. In other words, if you think you’re going to see a massive leap in performance, you’re in for an unpleasant surprise. Truth be told, the 2nd gen does perform better in every sense in comparison to the 1st gen, but the question is – Is it worth the price?
As far as we are concerned, if you already own a 1st gen chip and are satisfied with the results, there is no need to aim for an upgrade, especially if you’re an occasional user. On the other hand, in case you’re editing or rendering frequently, the 2nd generation is a much better choice due to hyperthreading, better clocks, and overall better performance in synthetic benchmarks. As for the price, AMD is well-known for being a budget-friendly company and these processors aren’t an exception.

Though pavement upkeep agendas will differ from property to property, the general purpose of asphalt upkeep is to sustain its enchantment and lengthen its life. Some paving upkeep tasks could be managed by yourself or by an appointed staff, reminiscent of inspections and trash clearance; whereas others are best left within the fingers of trained and outfitted professionals. A great pavement upkeep should include fundamental duties like common assessments, sweeping, crack filling, pothole repair, periodic line striping, and most significantly, seal coating. Without a correct sealcoat, asphalt pavements will experience heightened put on and tear from traffic, weather, chemicals, salts, and more, which shortens their life and diminishes their aesthetic worth. Because of the versatility of this materials, the design will be tailored to match the encircling space, similar to its ability to match the colour of the particular home or boundary walls. If in comparison with other floor supplies, you will rapidly discover that concrete is a far sight less expensive, so able to fit inside most budgets. Concrete can be a surface materials that requires so much much less upkeep then a few of the opposite alternatives out there on the market, which implies its enticing appearance remains instead of that much longer. Make the ground flat by using a rake and shovel.
Add 1x4 or 2x4 boards as shelves as these spaces are perfect for them.
Then measure the underside left and prime proper. If each measurements are the same, the wall is sq.. The spaces between the studs are one of the vital neglected spaces in wooden sheds. Add 1x4 or 2x4 boards as shelves as these areas are good for them. To make the shelves adjustable, use slotted tracks that settle for shelving clips up the sides of the studs. You will discover them at most hardware supply stores. The key to creating your shed last is proper care and utilizing the suitable materials. It makes all the distinction if your shed is constructed from hardwood similar to redwood or cedar. Use a great quality water sealer on all uncovered wooden. You will additionally want to maintain the roof free from debris. To make this wall ninety from the first one, measure out from the corner point where the strings cross. Measure 4 ft (items) up on one aspect, and three on the opposite. Now, from these two factors, the measurement needs to be five toes (models). Make any mandatory adjustments till it measures exactly five ft. To complete, proceed across the remaining sides in the identical fashion. Once your wall or floor is framed, the easiest way to make it sq. is to measure the opposing corners diagonally. So, you'd measure the underside proper and top left corners. Take special care concerning the location of your wood sheds. It's best to have plenty of room so the door will swing open freely and you'll want the area to build it. Try to not locate your shed the place it is going to look like it was dropped into place, but more so it blends into its surroundings. Where you locate your shed will probably be determined by how you will use it. As an example, if you're using it as a pool cabana the place you keep your pool equipment and chemicals, then the wooden shed must be situated near the pool. Keep in mind that your shed's roof can get messy with fowl droppings if you happen to find it instantly underneath a tree. An excellent set of plans should have it all. Your plans ought to contain plenty of images of the wood shed in the progress of being built. It ought to also have step-by-step directions. Another useful item is to have exploded diagrams along with a detailed materials checklist to make the trip to the provision retailer a lot simpler. There are three essential components that will assist you determine whether or not or not to purchase a wooden shed kit - value, time and talent level. A shed package will usually take about one weekend to finish (once it has been delivered). You must feel comfy together with your skill level of using tools. Another big consideration is the associated fee. You will save extra time buying a picket shed equipment which is a big payoff since they are often costlier than constructing from scratch. While you go to the constructing supply retailer, take along the supplies checklist that comes along with your set of plans (if you have already bought them). You will get a fairly accurate estimate of how much it will price and examine to how a lot a kit prices. There are four fundamental kinds of wood sheds and they're differentiated by the form of their roofs. A lean-to is nice for storing smaller objects and it shares or "leans to" a wall of an present building. For those who want more headroom in the direction of the front of your wooden shed then build a saltbox shed. Gable sheds are widespread due to their simplicity.
