Keep the tractor working
Tumblr media
Our 1950 Ford 8N tractor is finally purring like a kitten!  A bunch of parts, trial and error, and swear words and she’s almost ready to do work.  But, nothing ever is easy with this machine and so on to the next project. My goal is to keep the tractor working, doing what she was designed to do - be a reliable (70 year old) tool. Wasn't paying attention to the camera...sorry about the thumb...but she runs nicely now When we moved to our property we bought a 1950 Ford 8N that we planned to use mostly for mowing and perhaps eventually other fieldwork.  We couldn’t afford a newer tractor with a front end loader, and the purchase included a dual-axle car trailer plus a number of implements, so we felt we got a good deal.  Over time I’ve become more familiar with the machine and have seen where maintenance has been neglected over the years.  Since purchasing it, I’ve repaired the hydraulic lift, which included scraping out the decades of gunked up hydraulic “fluid” and installing new piston and O-ring, lift cylinder, (and bent lift arm…). I’ve also repaired or replaced a number of components in the fuel and electrical system including the carburetor and distributor.  This past winter I ended up taking the head off of the engine block and replaced the valves with newer adjustable valves.  I cleaned the carbon from the accessible parts of the block, replaced the head with a new gasket and grade 5 bolts, and torqued to specs.  The pistons and sleeves looked good enough so I decided not to replace them at this point.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Before and after the cleaning before replacing the valves Once I put all of the doo-dads back in place (technical term), I couldn’t get the engine to start.  It would sputter, but wouldn’t run.  I scratched my head and checked that it had all needed elements – fuel, air, spark and compression.  Finally, after checking the Ford Dealer Mechanic Training Manual I figured it out – the timing was off.  Following the manual, I got everything set correctly and she fired right up!  There were a couple of mishaps though…oil flowed out of the filter canister and all over the shop floor…turns out a washer needed replacement.  Once installed, I started her up and no more oil leak.  But then, once the engine warmed up, coolant started spraying out from the radiator cap all over the shop.  After letting the engine cool (and me cooling off after a few choice swear words) I saw that the lip on the radiator was bent, so the cap wasn’t sealing properly.  I used a small pry bar and made a few modifications and presto – the cap fits snug and no more coolant leaks.
What Next?
Now that it’s Spring, there’s lots of mowing to get to and I hoped to hop on the 8N and hook up the mower.  When I sat in the seat and tried to shift into gear, the clutch wouldn’t disengage so I couldn’t get into gear.  I’ve tried a bunch of quick fixes to get it free, but so far it’s still stuck.  (Lesson learned: wedge the clutch pedal down when stored.)  Long story short, I’ve just ordered a new clutch kit and will replace the transmission shaft seal while I have the tractor “split.”  I also decided to replace the axle seals that I noticed are worn out.  This will give me the opportunity to finish the brake repair.  I replaced the brakes and when I took the hubs off, they were deeply grooved so brake shoes weren’t making firm contact.  I have new hubs, so while I replace the axle seals, I’ll reassemble with the new hubs. While I wait for parts, I decided to revisit the hydraulics and adjust them to spec. One thing I neglected when I replaced the lift cylinder was the cam follower pin. Let me tell you that it was a royal PITA! A while ago I bought a jig from Zane Sherman that helps line up and adjust the lift linkage. The kit came with a new cam follower pin and so I figured I'd just take it all apart, replace the pin, and then adjust to specs. Of course, it was a longer process than expected, and involved removing various parts to be able to get to the cam follower pin and get it replaced. Hours later, its replaced. I will adjust it and reassemble once I get the cotter pins I need that I didn't have on hand. Oh well. Bright side is that once complete, I'll have an adjusted lift that will have working position control and draft control should I need it! (if I decide to use the moldboard plow for example).
Tumblr media
Getting it back together... I have enjoyed all of the problem solving required to get the tractor running well and maintaining it as a useable piece of machinery.  I wish that I knew more before we bought it though.  My biggest complaint is that all of the bolts, nuts, screws, etc. have been painted over with thick enamel paint.  This makes removing them even more difficult.  Not only do I have to fight 70 years of rust, but now also paint.  In one case, I needed to remove a part that I thought had been welded on and painted over.  I broke out the angle grinder to remove the weld, and poof – it was only a clod of dirt that had been painted over.  At least it made for easy grinding. If (when) we get a new tractor with modern features (and a bucket finally), I may tear the tractor down completely, sandblast off all of the paint, and do a proper rebuild.  Until then, I need her to run!   Even at 70 years old, she is still capable provided I can keep up with the regular maintenance, and find the rest of the neglected areas that need work. Tumblr media
Check Latest Price  Product description The Yakima Bait Company was established to produce the best, world's finest and also the most effective fishing lures.  The Yakima Bait Rooster Tail is one of the evidence of the domination of the company. The product comes in different colors suh as Frog (FR), Frog Spring (FRS), Frog Bleeding (FRB) Features ·        Unique Spinning Action ·        In-Line Weighted Body Design ·        Pulsating Hackle Tail Attracts Fish ·        Genuine Silver, Brass, or Copper Blades The product has a 4.5 star review on Amazon.com and here are some comments customers made after purchasing the product.   Customer Comments I.       "If you like chasing the slime darts then these are a nice inexpensive lure that casts well and you won't be too upset if you get snagged."   II.      "Just like advertised .... three rooster tail lures but they are not much .... cheap poorly tuned lures. Would probably not buy again"   III.    "These are great spinners, 1.0 out of 5 starsGreat lures, if they all show up!"   2.           GSI Outdoors Halulite Microdualist Two-Person Cookset
Tumblr media
Check Latest Price  Product Description Going for $54.95, the Haluite Microdualist should be your best fishing buddy, it has a perfect pot and lid combo which is perfect for stove top cooking.  For personal safety, it is more advisable not to use directly over a campfire. It has a 1.4 liter pot and lid combo which would help transform your meal into very delicious dishes.  There is a stuff sack which you can put in everything after cooking. It does not come in various colors, it has a single color. Features ·        Helps save fuel ·        Very compact ·        Easy to move around This product has a 4.7 out of 5 star review on Amazon.com and here are some customer's comments regarding the product, they are both positive and negative, but the positive definitely outweighs the negative. Customer Comments I.       "This is quite possibly the best piece of camping gear I've ever bought. Every element seems thoughtfully designed and solidly constructed of sturdy materials.  A good example is the handle that folds over the top to securely lock the whole thing together--it looks great and works even better.  The nesting concept isn't unique (and I cross-shopped several other brands), but it's executed to perfection here in a compact, lightweight form factor with just enough room for a stove and fuel tank.  Pair this kit with an inexpensive folding stove for a cheaper alternative to a Jetboil system, and it serves two people! This will serve double duty as a useful tool for camping trips and a key element of our disaster/bug-out bag" II.      "This set is absolutely perfect for two people. It's compact, lightweight, and brilliantly designed.  I love that I can fit my ultralight stove and fuel can inside the nested cook set with ease. The entire package weighs fewer than 800 grams with a full fuel tank." III.    "The handle is sturdy and doubles as a lock for the lid to keep everything together in your pack. The lid has a convenient strainer and the little lid handle/tab is diminutive and effective.  The neoprene sleeve drink cups seemed a bit gimmicky to me at first, but they work fantastic. The multicolor bowls and cups (orange and blue) nest perfectly together and make it easy to keep track of whose is whose.  I also like that this is anodized aluminum and DOES NOT have a not-stick coating. I HATE the toxic non-stick stuff and refuse to use it as it will for sure flake off and end up in my food.  You could use sand and water to clean up this pot if you wanted to. We mostly just use it to boil water." IV.    "The pouch is optional but serves as a small water basin washing dishes. If you were looking to save a few grams you could leave it behind, but it works great as a tub.  We used it to settle turbid water before pumping. Slow work, but better than clogging our water filter!"   3.    Primus - Classic Trail Stove
Tumblr media
Check Latest Price  Product Description Primus’ Classic Trail Stove has been proven to be; simple, very classic and also durable. If you are going fishing, camping or any outdoor adventure, then this cooking gear would work perfectly for you. To heighten your cooking ability on your next outing or fishing voyage, ensure you get this product.  The crosswire pot which comes with the product acts as a built-in windscreen, the stove can also be equipped with a piezo igniter which makes matches useless.  The stove comes with nylon storage and transport bag. Features ·         Lightweight, compact camp stove ·         Manual ignition ·        10,000 BTUs of heat ·        Three-minute boiling time ·        Includes nylon storage bag ·        Eight-ounce weight This product has a 4.4 out of 5 star review on Amazon.com. The price has been beaten down to favour customers from $31.00 to $27.04. Here are some few feedbacks from customers that have already purchased the product. Customer Comments I.       "just got this stove in today. I immediately grabbed my camping cookware & tested it. I have a 20 ounce GSI Glacier Stainless Minimalist pot & brought it to a boil in 5 minutes or so (in 40 degree F ambient).  I used an MSR 8 ounce propane cartridge for the fuel & seated it on a MSR Universal Canister Stand.  This entire set up is extremely compact & light weight. It just plain works & will not take up half of your pack! I am a kayaker & used to bring a Coleman burner, tank, & stand with me.  It is huge & heavy (when trying to bring only the bare minimum). I'm absolutely stoked that I won't have to bring the Coleman with me on my next trip, which will likely be in a week or two.  See the picture below. It gives you a good idea of the size of the Primus/MSR set-up & the size difference when compared to my Coleman.  I included a roll of duct tape in the picture for reference. I also took & couple pictures of the burner with the GSI Minimalist & an MSR pan on it.  Note that Primus says you have to use their cartridges for this burner. That is for liability purposes on their end.  The MSR propane cartridge works just fine and is EXACTLY the same cartridge as the Primus one. When you put them side by side you can tell they came from the same factory." II.      "Very nice stove, good design in general and very solid. It is a real torch and I like the broad burner head, very similar to my Coleman Peak II gas stove.  You can stortch it up to boil water or turn it down to just a simmer and the broad heat doesn't make a hot spot in the bottom of the pan. There are a few things that reduced it's star count, and they include; 1) it is pretty heavy for a stove of this type, at 7.5oz it is almost a half pound.  This is a result of the traditional super Primus structure, a brass valve and either chromed brass or heavy stainless for the upper part.  This will last till your grand kids are old, if propane is still even available then. 2) It come in two parts, the burner top and the valve assembly. So they need to be screwed together before attaching to the fuel can and use.  A bit of bother and potential to get dirt in the jet. But it makes it fold down small and goes in it's nice mesh bag. 3) When you unscrew from the fuel can you need to do so quickly as the fuel will shoot out a bit.  The needle that allows the fuel to come on is a bit long so the stove assembly unscrews enough to lose the O-ring seal before the needle has let the fuel turn off.  Again, not a big thing but an annoyance and something to be aware of. 4) The knob looks to be plastic but perhaps is actually Bakelite or some other heat resistant product.  There is no warning about not using with a wind screen but if it is plastic and used with a wind screen it could melt the knob. Unknown at this point."   4. Piscifun Spinning Reel Lightweight Smooth Fishing Reel 10+1BB Carbon Fiber Drag Powerful Spin Reels
Tumblr media
Check Latest Price  Product Description This Machined aluminium braid ready spool goes for $37.97 on Amazon.com, and it comes with a rotor and Graphite body which helps provide a lightweight design.  The lightweight does not actually diminsh its strength and durability. There is just a single color for this product.  The Piscifun venom Spinning Reel has a three carbon fiber drag system which has a capacity of up to 26.5 pounds of fish stopping power, and this makes it the perfect choice for salt and fresh water anglers. Features ·        It is Braid ready ·        Lightweight ·        Unparraleled stopping power ·        Anti-corrosion The Piscifun venom Spinning Reel is rated 4.6 out of 5 stars by verified buyers on Amazon. This product has only colour 2000 model. These are some few selected comments from customers that have purchased and made use of the product. Customer Comments I.       "the 4000 version was on sale for $36. If it worked i'd be content, but it actually seems to work very well and functioning like something much more expensive.  It's a smooth running reel with nice feel to it. the drag seems smooth but I have not had it long enough to really push it or the claimed drag ratings.  I have not taken it apart to see how much grease was used, but I expect it's not too bad from what I can see taking off the handle.  This is the cheap style handle with a screw on the opposite side to hold it and and allow changing sides. Its not the nice screw in style like the Honor series reels.  That's not really an issue, but for salt water it's another non-sealed hole into the gearbox." II.      "I needed a reel for surf fishing. There is no free lunch out there when it comes to salt water gear.  Its $120 for anything beginning to resemble sealed, but this one should be a great value with the help of simple maintenance.  Will update this is anything happens...I'm not expecting any weak links" III.    "The reel arrived well packaged, and on time. This reel was purchased to on a 2pc rod that I carry in the truck and use to fish the local ponds.  I was pleasantly surprised with it's performance. The reel has a smooth drag and, because of it's weight, makes it easy to fish for several hours with our too much fatigue to my hand/arms.  I've only had the reel for a couple of weeks so time will tell how this reel will hold up. Right now, I have high hopes."   5. Lowepro Whistler BP 350 AW (Grey) . Professional Grade Outdoor Adventure Camera Backpack

Is it worth it to purchase this product? Let's see what customers have to say about that. Customer Comments "I'm a wedding photographer and was looking for a good-looking backpack for destination weddings.  While I don't do crazy outdoor stuff, my gear gets (ab)used pretty good. I went between the Whistler 350 and a cheaper no-brand pack, and ultimately decided on this one for it's sturdiness and size.  It fits all my travel gear perfectly - two full frame Nikon bodies, 70-200mm, 85mm, 50mm, 35mm, two flashes, a flash stand, and little accessories like batteries, PocketWizards, etc. It's a bit tight, but it fits!" "One thing I specifically love is that it opens up in the back, which is super nice for when you're standing in line and there's no way for you to see what's happening in the back...  It basically makes it robbery proof. It also doesn't look like a typical camera bag, really unsuspecting!  The quality and craftsmanship is outstanding - and really, after owing two other LowePro bags, I didn't expect anything less." "The one thing that is a bit 'oh well...' are the shoulder pads. Being a girl, these are just way too wide for my body.  My husband however commented right away, that the fit is suuuper comfy. I take it with a grain of salt." "The one positive thing I could say about this but don't know for sure. This is built thick heavy and possibly tough. If you are out at sea or in a hurricane, this would be five stars."   Conclusion With the help of this article, you must have been able to select the fishing equipment that appeal to you most from the list which has been provided. Purchasing any of the equipment listed above would never leave you with regrets.   Facebook Twitter Instagram Pinterest Google-plus Android

1965 Barracuda. Purchased this vehicle last year. The engine is a 360 with with Comp Cams 268H grind, kit number 20-212-2 (Cam, Sprocket, Timing Chain, Valve Springs, Lifters, Pushrods, Valve Seals) installed during rebuild. Motor has aluminum intake, edelbrock carb, and full length headers. Engine electronics are all new, as well as the radiator, and the fuel system from tank to carburetor. The transmission is a 904 with stage II shift kit installed during build. The trans leaked at the pan when I got it, but I had that fixed. The shifter is a B & M and is difficult to get into reverse and park. There is less than 1000 miles on the rebuild of motor and trans. Car has disc brakes in the front and drum in the rear. Brake hoses are new and brake lines to rears are new as well. Front shocks are new. All four tires are also new. Rear end has been upgrade to an 8.25. The exterior sports recent paint work with the color being Crimson Metallic Red. There is some bubbling in the paint on the rf fender and rf door at bottom. Windows go up and down. The driver's side is stiff but works. Door mirror is new, window trim is new, drip rail trim is in very good shape. The rest of the exterior bright work is original and could use chroming. One of the trunk hinges trim is broken. The front bumper has been deleted and valance customized using sheet metal instead of fiberglass. Interior is in very good shape with seats being recovered with new foam last year. The high back bucket seats were donated from a '70 mustang but recovered to resemble Barracuda pattern. Headliner is intact with no rips or holes. Carpet is in very good condition. Has new steering box and tie rod sleeves. Has new pioneer cd player that is smartphone compatible, but not hooked up. Hooker Blackheart F-Body Bolt-in Header and Exhaust System
Typically, when starting work on a project car with the idea to do a gradual build-up, one of the first things us muscle car guys do is toss the stock exhaust system onto the scrap pile in favor of something much better. A vintage muscle car equipped with a stock exhaust tends to sound wimpy and lack an aggressive tone, and more importantly, it’s likely stifling the car’s ability to move spent fuel freely to the tailpipe. So not only does the car sound docile, it’s being robbed of precious performance. On a previous project armed with an LS3, we gained approximately 40 horsepower by replacing the stock exhaust manifolds with long-tube headers. That’s just too much horsepower to leave on the table for such a simple modification.
Let’s face it, we all want our cars to sound cool, and the end goal is to get the most horsepower and torque out of our engines. There’s really no reason to settle on a stock or underperforming exhaust system unless you are building a concours restoration. In that event, then a stock exhaust system makes sense.
We got our hands on a 1968 Camaro that had recently gone through an LS engine swap, but had yet to be fitted with an exhaust system. This was a situation where we didn’t want to spend a ton of time working on a custom exhaust, so we got in touch with the guys at Holley Performance and they recommended using their Hooker BlackHeart 1967-’69 GM F-Body LS Swap Full-Length header and their stainless steel 1967-’69 GM F-Body exhaust system.
This is a fully bolt-on exhaust system for those running a stock F-body suspension system. For us, 90 percent of the exhaust system bolted right in, but since this car had an aftermarket rear suspension system and had been mini-tubbed, we came across a few challenges that required just a little bit of cutting and welding to enable us to run the exhaust over the rearend and locate the exhaust hangers. Had this been a stock rear suspension, the Hooker BlackHeart exhaust system would have bolted right in with all the parts offered in the kit.
Follow along as we show how simple it is to install long-tube headers and a full exhaust system on a first-gen Camaro in just a few hours. CHP
1. The Hooker BlackHeart 1967-’69 F-Body LS Swap 1 3/4-inch Ceramic Coated Full-Length Headers (PN 70101507-1HKR) and 1967-’69 F-Body LS Swap Header-Back 2.5-inch Exhaust System (PN 70501318-RHKR) is just what we need to wake up our LS-swapped ’68 Camaro. This system offers excellent performance and it will sound killer.
2. Chevy High Performance Tech Center Manager Jason Scudellari got started by disconnecting the negative cable from the battery, disconnecting the spark plug wires, and removing the dipstick tube. He then swung in the 1 3/4-inch first-gen F-body Hooker BlackHeart LS Swap long-tube headers from under the car. This little trick required resting the headers on the spark plugs then slowly lowering the lift enough so Jason could continue the installation from up top.
3. Jason then slid in the supplied header gasket for a tight, no-leak seal. No one likes the ticking sound of a leaky exhaust header. Especially us.
4. Jason then tightened up the supplied header bolts with a 13mm socket. It’s a good idea to tighten them by starting with one of the inside bolts then work your way out to the ends.
5. With the headers tightly bolted up and looking good, we reinstalled the dipstick tube and are ready to get cracking on the 1967-’69 Camaro Hooker BlackHeart 2.5-inch exhaust.
6. Being that our LS-swapped Camaro was previously outfitted with long-tube headers, we just simply bolted the existing O2 sensor to the bung on new Hooker BlackHeart headers.
7. Because we forgot to order a set header adapters from Holley, due to time constraints on this article, we hit up our friends at The Muffler Man (Placentia, California) to quickly whip out a set with some tubing they had laying around. Holley offers them (PN 42107HKR) so you don’t have to go through the hassle like we did. Plus, the Hooker BlackHeart adapters look a whole lot better, being they were specifically designed for this application.
8. Moving forward, Jason connected the crossover-pipe to the turn-in, which mates to the header adapters. As a helpful tip, be sure to slide on the supplied clamps before connecting the crossover pipe. We made that mistake … once.
9. With a pole jack holding the crossover pipe in place, we lightly bolted on the clamps, making sure the ends of the bolts are pointed up for maximum ground clearance. Don’t fully tighten them down just yet.
10. Next, Jason slid on the mufflers. It’s important to make sure the crossover-pipe is centered using the driveshaft as a reference point. We used a small piece of wood as a shim to get the system dialed in and even on both sides. We’ll hold that muffler position by using one more pole jack.
11. Here, the two mufflers are mocked in place. We’ll fine-tune the fit just a little more before final tightening.
12. Next up, Jason worked on fitting in the over-axle tubes. If you have an aftermarket rear suspension system or sway bar, there is a good chance of running into interference. At some point this car was upgraded with an aftermarket rear sway bar, which was in the way of the exhaust tube, so we removed it to illustrate how easily the over-axle tube goes in.
13. Prior to tackling the rear portion of the exhaust, Jason made sure the headers, crossover pipe, and mufflers were lined up properly, and then snugged them down. This ensures correct alignment so the rear section will line up nice and even.
14. Before cranking down the muffler sleeves, make sure the mufflers are installed in an equal distance length-wise. We used the driveshaft yoke as a reference point.
15. Although this is a bolt-in affair on a stock Camaro, we had to do some minor welding and fab work to locate the supplied muffler hangers and rubber isolators that normally connect to the rear seatbelt bolts. If your car still has the rear seatbelts, you’ll have to remove the rear seat and replace the factory seatbelt bolts with the longer ones provided in the kit.
16. Since the car has also been mini-tubbed, the stock muffler hangers are long gone. This also meant we had to shorten the end of the over-axle tubing a few inches near the frame. We marked the cut line with a black felt-tip pen.
17. Jason added a little custom touch by pie-cutting the tip to add a little more style to the exhaust outlet.
18. It’s all about using proper angles, and you can see how good the outlet tip looks lined up with the bottom of the quarter-panel between the leaf spring.
19. And there you have it. A great-looking, bolt-in exhaust system that also offers excellent performance and an aggressive sound that we muscle car guys dig. This installation will cost you just about four hours of time and a few beverages if you have a buddy helping out, which is always a good idea.

If you’re a warm weather fan like Laura is, the thought of the coming winter months can be a bit depressing. The knowledge that these bright sunny days will soon transform into those cold windy nights, is enough to make anyone want to find a warm cozy corner of their home to hunker down in hibernation. Unfortunately, if you’re homeowners like we are, you know there are way too many things that need to be done around the house in preparation for those icy rain storms and heavy snow. Winter can be very damaging to your home. Ice and snow can build up on roofs leading to leaks or structural damage, water pipes can freeze, and heavy snow can wreak havoc on plants and trees. So before you grab your homemade quilt and hot cup of cocoa, take these simple steps for winter home prep.
  10 Winter Home Prep Tips
Winter Home Prep Tip 1: Winter Window Preparation
The first step in preparing your widows for winter is to give them a good cleaning. Be sure to clean the glass, frame, and windowsill area. Dirt and debris on the window frame can lead to leaks and drafts.
Tumblr media
The next step is to install the storm windows. Storm windows are especially important to have if the windows in your home are older and not very well insulated.
Next check for any visual defects to the window – obviously any broken glass should be replaced, but also look for any cracks or holes around the window frame both inside and outside the house. These should be filled in with putty or caulk. Also, check for dried out or missing chalking and weather stripping. Replace any that is worn, cracked or broken.
Now would also be a good time to remove any screens that will be exposed to the elements. Remember, if a screen is damaged, winter is a great time to repair them before they are needed for spring.
Replacing a worn out or torn screen is simple. Just follow these easy steps:
Purchase a screen repair kit from your local hardware store, but ensure it will be big enough to fit the window
Remove the rubber gasket holding the screen in the frame. Once the gasket is removed the screen will pop right out.
Place the new screen over the frame and rough cut it slightly bigger than the frame. You want some extra screen to work with.
Using the wheel tool that came with the repair kit, use the rounded edge to push the new screen into the gasket channel, and then use the grooved end to push the new gasket tight into the channel all around the frame.
Using a sharp utility knife or scissors, trim off any excess screen. You screen is now ready for springtime.
Winter Home Prep Tip 2: Winterize Outside Doors
Tumblr media
Check that the weather stripping around doors is intact, and not brittle. Replace if necessary. Check that any caulking around doors is not dried out or cracking. If so, remove the old caulking and replace it.
To apply new caulk:
Start with cutting the nozzle of the caulk tube at a 45-degree angle and placing it in a caulking gun. Remember that most tubes of caulk have a patch at the base of the nozzle that needs to be punctured prior to use (I find a long nail is the easiest way to do this).
As you apply the caulk, remember to always keep the gun at a 45º angle and pull the gun toward you, never push it as this will leave a poor bead.
Only apply a few feet of caulk at a time.
Use your finger to smooth out the caulk and ensure it fills any cracks and holes.
Now just let it dry and the job is complete.
Winter Home Prep Tip 3: Check and Clean your Heating System
Tumblr media
Your heating system is the most important part of your home during the winter months. It is critical that no matter how you heat your home, you ensure that you properly maintain your equipment, so that when the cold sets in, you can stay warm.
Start by having your heating system tuned up by a qualified technician if required. The last thing you need is to have your system breakdown in the middle of a cold spell.
Before the cold weather sets in, top off your oil or propane tanks. If you have a fireplace, prepare the wood you’ll need to burn.
Vacuum any dust and dirt out of heating ducts and cold air returns. Remember to replace furnace filters every 30 days.
Check to ensure all heating registers and radiators are unblocked and clear of furniture and drapes.
Winter Home Prep Tip 4: Insulating Your Home
Tumblr media
Seal up any cracks in your home around:
window frames,
doors,
pipes,
chimneys,
dryer exhausts,
bath and kitchen vents,
and electrical outlets.
Check the exterior of your house for cracks or holes and seal them up. Seal brick exteriors with a high-quality masonry sealer to prevent damage from freezing.
Winter Home Prep Tip 5: Protect Pipes and Faucets
Tumblr media
Water supplies to outside faucets, ponds, waterfalls, etc. should be shut off and drained before the temperature drops to below freezing. Any water pipes that are directly exposed to the cold should be insulated to protect them from freezing. Insulate your pipes with foam rubber sleeves or fiberglass insulation. If pipes are located in areas of your home that are not heated, special heating strips may be required to prevent the pipes from freezing.
If the worst happens, and a pipe does freeze, here is what you can do:
Start by shutting off the water supply to the problem pipe. If this is not possible, you may need to shut the main water supply to the house off.
Next you need to defrost the pipe. Just remember not to heat up the pipes to quickly, or allow the water in the pipes to get hot enough to boil, or this could cause additional damage. Also remember to work from the faucet (or valve) toward the frozen area.
Here are some simple methods to use on frozen pipes:
Use a hairdryer to heat up the frozen section of pipe.
Wrap a rag around the pipe and pour boiling water over it.
Use a small space heater to warm the pipe until all the ice inside melts.
If all else fails, a small propane torch can be used, but be extremely careful not to melt and solder joints. Never use a torch on plastic pipes.
Winter Home Prep Tip 6: Winterize your Water Heater
Just like a furnace, a water heater requires routine maintenance.
Tumblr media
The following steps should be performed to ensure you could still take those long hot showers, even in the dead of winter:
Any shutoff valves on the heater should be opened and closed a few times to prevent seizing.
Drain the sediment from the tank:
Shut off the water supply to the tank.
Attach one end of a garden hose to the drain valve located at the bottom of the water tank.
Open the valve and allow it to drain until only clean water comes out.
This will remove any sediment in the tank.
Winter Home Prep Tip 7: Prepare the Gutters and Roof
Gutters can become clogged with leaves and debris, resulting in water not draining properly. This water can freeze and expand causing damage.
Tumblr media
Clean out your gutters and downspouts, and make sure the downspouts are not discharging water at the base of your home’s foundation.
Install wire or plastic mesh over your gutters to prevent future clogs from happening.
Check your roof for missing or damaged shingles and replace them if necessary.
Check that all metal flashing along the roof is properly sealed and any heating and fireplace vents are free from blockage.
Winter Home Prep Tip 8: Lawn and Garden
Preparing your yard for winter is just as important as preparing your house. Here are some easy steps to ensure you yard is in tip top shape for next summer’s cookouts.
Tumblr media
Trim any trees that could come in contact with your house during heavy wind gusts, or that could break off and cause damage.
Fix any cracks or holes in driveways or walkways. These could fill with water and freeze, resulting in more damage.
Put yard and garden furniture inside or cover it with protective tarps.
If you have a snow blower, make sure it is ready to go – check the oil, tire pressure, etc. Be sure to have a fresh supply of gas on hand.
Winterize pools and cover them with strong tarps to keep out leaves, twigs and animals. Drain the water from the pool if possible.
Drain all fuel from lawn equipment that will not be used during the winter. This includes lawn mowers, tractors, weed whackers, hedge trimmers, etc.
Winter Home Prep Tip 9: Prepare for Blackouts
Winter brings heavy snow that can knock out power and telephone lines, so be prepared. Stock up on emergency items such as candles, flashlights, batteries, etc. Have these items where they can easily be accessible. A flashlight does you know good if you can’t find it in the dark. If you know a bad storm is coming, be prepared. Keep plenty of food and water around, especially if you live in an area where a winter storm can leave you home bound for a day or two.
Winter Home Prep Tip 10: Seal the Basement
During the winter months, ice and snow can build up along your foundation. As the snow and ice melts, it can seep into your basement through any cracks or crevasses. Seal basement walls and floors with a high quality water sealant to prevent this. If you know your basement leaks, take adequate precautions to protect anything stored down there. Keep valuables off the floor by storing them on shelf’s or pallets.
Ok fellow urban homesteaders, so there you have it. My top 10 tips for maintaining your home this winter. Winter is always right around the corner, and although we can’t stop it from coming, we can be prepared for it.
What tips do you have for winter home prep?

Poised for the Bahamas
“I hear you’re putting Totem on the hard.” “Will you go out again?” In fact, we have no plans to park Totem for an extended stay on land (or in the water), and have never considered remaining in the US. But given the dearth of information in this space about what 2017 holds I can understand the speculation. We are on the cusp of departure and thrilled to be heading out for more adventures afloat.
Cascading events prolonged our departure, but the boat’s been humming, and legged out timing has shaped our direction. Routing clarity comes slowly after many shuffles on how we’ll fill the gaps between now (in Fort Lauderdale, Florida) and a year from now  (Pacific Ocean, via Panama Canal). It still has a lot of squiggles and question marks, but the bigger picture should stick.
For many months, that year-long view was literally nothing more than get out of the US and back to the islands, spend a couple of months in Cuba, and explore Panama’s Guna Yala. (Remember that Plan is a four-letter word for cruisers! Corollary: Thar Be No Schedules)
Bahamas Baby
We’d written the Bahamas off, but they’re now solidly ON, and their late arrival means I’m scrambling for information. Friday I got our Waterway Guide’s Bahamas, Turks & Caicos book. IT’S GORGEOUS. The last years of Western Pacific / Indian Ocean / Southern Atlantic sailing had poor guides, if any, and it put me off. What did exist covered too wide an area to be useful, so I stuck to travel guides instead and started thinking cruising guides weren’t important. You know what? They’re incredibly useful, I’d just been too long without an example of what a good guide offers. So with 2017 Bahamas edition in hand, instead of helping Jamie and the girls scrub the hull that morning, I did this:
I did also buy a traveler’s guidebook for the Bahamas. I’m probably going to leave it behind, because the Waterway book is better, and has everything I need: the travel guide insights (cultural orientation,  things to bring, cool places to visit) AND annually updated cruising data (what to bring and where to provision, details for moorings and choice anchorages, the latest marina info– even updates on impacts from last fall’s hurricane, and recommendations for things islanders might need that we can ferry over).
That schedule thing
Although schedules are the bane of cruising, I’ve happily added a fixed Must Be There date by signing on to present at the US Boat Show in Annapolis in April. Pam Wall and I will lead a 2-day Cruising Women seminar, and I’m giving a few additional presentations as part of the show’s Cruisers University. I’m very excited about this, especially the Cruising Women program. Jamie seems to have been born with saltwater in his veins; before we went cruising, it was important to me to seek information and skills. Women-only courses provided the shared perspective and camaraderie that best supported my goals.  If you sign up, tell me! I’d love to anticipate meetups.
Places and people
It feels very good to be poised for Bahamas takeoff in Fort Lauderdale, but first we had to get south from Jacksonville to Miami for my friend Lynne Rey’s birthday. Schedules again? Maybe, but no way would I miss this since we could be there! Along the way, there wasn’t  a lot of wind, but some beautiful sunny days and mellow seas that meant Niall could combine studying with watchkeeping in the cockpit.
Along the way we spent a couple of evenings hanging out with Kirk McGeorge. He’s done a couple of circumnavigations on a sistership, Gallivanter, and now does some crazy cool work building underwater submersibles with an outfit in Fort Pierce (he was a Navy diver, and drove Alvin- THE Alvin- on Titanic, way back when). The last time we saw Kirk was Australia, nearly five years ago! Cruising friendships like his are GOLD – you pick up right where you left off, despite intervening years.
In Miami, Lynne, her husband Tony (we sailed together in college) and their kids hosted us at the Coral Reef Yacht Club. This made fun birthday celebrations, late nights in the cockpit, kids learning and playing together, and a lot of good times very easy.
It also made it much easier for a visit from Kerry (the impressive endurance athlete / sailor / quadriplegic I sailed with last month). She gave our family and the Reys a preview of a powerful documentary she’s a part of that I hope will be ready to share publicly soon. Some tissues required after viewing before we could pose for a pic together, our thumbs in the air for Kerry’s nonprofit, ThumbsUp International. ThumbsUp connects people of all abilities to tackle athletic challenges, in particular by teaming able and disabled athletes.
Please check out the Facebook page for ThumbsUp International and give it a like to show your support! Kerry would really like to nudge it over the 2,000 like hurdle: can we do it?! Follow and share!
More friends visited: we first knew Tiffany and Greg as “the Coast Guard Couple” when we met them in Mexico eight (!) years ago; we last caught up in Australia. They’ve traveled a loop around the world since then, by sea across the Pacific and by land from SE Asia to the UK. Both are Coast Guard Academy graduates, both are hard core professional seafarers, and they had great advice on college and maritime licensing for Niall. Just the folks to help toss the lines when it was time to head to the anchorage, right?
Projects projects projects
And then, there was maintenance and repair. Lots of it. Because that’s one definition of the cruising life.
To give you an inkling of that everyday fun on Totem, and a peek into what’s kept Jamie busy here in Florida:
Outboard: FINALLY FIXED. It’s been sick for five months. Diagnosis by mechanic in Jacksonville: failed CDI unit, but we replaced that and still no spark. Option two: bad coil. Ding ding ding ding! Wires from the coil had both broken…photo above. They were crimped by a strain relief device, but the break was hidden inside of a plastic sleeve. Great 11th hour help from our new friend Conor, who borrowed a flywheel puller from a Miami auto shop to get it done.
Sundowners on Totem later, time to talk story with Conor (former cruising kid, now physicist) and his dad
Aft cabin: I went to a road trip to Miami with my friend Patty, and Jamie broke the aft cabin. He’s since rebuilt my workspace, relocated the solar and wind charge controllers to a newly-constructed locker, and cleaned up a bunch of wiring spaghetti. Few words for a LOT of work.
Dodger: As a sailmaker, Jamie knows his way around a sewing machine. But canvas work is “fiddly” (his description) and he hoped to outsource Totem’s new dodger sides. But after weeks of no joy or no action from service providers in northern Florida, he took our friends on Shanthi up on the offer to borrow their SailRite and made it himself. Templating with Tyvek from the hardware store, then constructing the final from Sunbrella, Strataglass, and Tenara thread…on the dock, until it rained, with child labor…as you do. It IS fiddly, but he does great work, and saving the expense is a great bonus.
Before he could get to the canvas, the whole hard top was shifted forward: this meant changing the frame (it’s more vertical on the forward face now) and building new supports.
Deck hardware: fully reinstalled the repaired stanchion base that broke on our unpleasant passage from Bermuda to Connecticut.
Engine: Fixed pesky drip from fuel filters after troubleshooting. Replaced barbs with correct size, replaced 3-way valve fitting, and O-rings. Hopefully this saves the $250 racor replacement kit!
Electrical: We use a rugged Panasonic Toughbook for our nav computer. Both plug connections for the nine-year-old 12v charger had failed; solder now leads directly to the board. All good.
Plumbing: Replaced failing cockpit drain hoses (shared with galley sink drain: presumed grease buildup). Fixed flaw in primary water tank that prevents proper venting with a few holes (and finally found out the actual capacity, two years later- 73 gallons!). Discovered (and replaced) leaking outlet fitting in tank. Aft head required an unclogging adventure, then replacing seals and hose and other work that I’d rather not know too much about. Thanks to my sweetie for being The One That Deals with the Head on board.
…and that’s just what he did on Totem! On friend’s boats, Jamie helped install a solar panel, did a few (three? four? five? I lost track) rig evaluations, and helped get one tuned properly.
I married well.
Much more than fixing stuff
One of the more significant preoccupations outside of prepping Totem is working with coaching clients. We thoroughly enjoy helping people make the leap to successful cruising! More recently, the kids have gotten into a few of our Skype sessions, too: prospective cruising kids want to hear the real scoop directly from them. Sitting around the iPad, this is a pretty typical scene.
We closed our our Miami stay by anchoring in Marine Stadium, a sweet little spot with near 360° protection and a killer view of the downtown Miami. Backlit by twinkling lights from the skyline at night, we could detect dolphins circling Totem only by loud huffs of their breath. An idyllic spot to raft up and make some great memories with the pretty Huckins, Cortado (which is for sale, by the way), and her crew.
Totem is now in Fort Lauderdale, on our final countdown to departure for the Bahamas. We don’t know when we’ll be back in the USA, but it’s probably some years. I’ve got an insane list, and it includes major items like, oh, battery bank replacement. Full watermaker servicing. Diesel mechanic services. Provisioning for 3 months in islands with limited stores, and high costs. Supplies for Bahamian communities still impacted by hurricane Mathew last fall. Then there are the incidentals “but we won’t be in the USA for how long?” that inflate our list. Here in the mainland, we have access to better breadth of goods, at a better quality, and a better value, than we will likely encounter for a long time.
It’s been blowing for days, but Totem is in a protected anchorage. There is access to supplies. Anchorage neighbors stopping by to chat from their kayaks. Visits from shoreside dwellers, arriving with friendship, the gift of papaya, and lessons in art (thank you, Jim!).
Life is beautiful. I’m grateful every day for the choices we have and our freedom as a family, and can’t wait to extend our adventures…starting soon in the Bahamas!

6 New Speed Parts For Car Crafters!
LS Swap Headers
What it is: Swap an LS into an S-10
Why you care: LS swaps are a big deal considering how easy and cheap it is to make power with them. Drop one into a lightweight truck like the S-10 and you have a recipe for speed. Holley/MSD just came out with Flowtech S-10 LS swap long-tube headers that were developed specifically for two-wheel-drive 1982-93 Chevy S-10 pickups powered by LS engines. They’re available in five different versions: painted, ceramic-coated, natural-finish 304 stainless steel, natural-finish 409 stainless steel, and polished 304 stainless steel. They come complete with gaskets and hardware and feature 1 3/4-inch mandrel-bent primary tubes, long-transition 3-inch collectors for increased exhaust velocity, and 3/8-inch thick header flanges for maximum strength and sealing.

Better Steering
What it is: Ididit Pro-Fab & Pro-Lite Steering Columns
Why you care: Low weight, ruggedness, and simplicity are the hallmarks of a good speed part, and ididit wants you to pay attention to their new line of steering columns for the track. At just 4.6 pounds, ididit’s Pro-Fab is a bare-bones, no-frills, retrofit unit for drag racing and competition applications that has been stripped of turn signals, tilt system, and anything else that might add weight or get in the way of getting down the track. By comparison, the ZP Pro-Lite is a top-tier, lightweight column that retains all the safety features of a standard steering column to blend function with performance. Coming in at less than 6 pounds, it nonetheless provides all the creature comforts needed for an enjoyable drive with features including self-canceling turn signals, four-way flashers, horn wiring, 3 7/8-inch wiring plug, and a 1-inch lower shaft. It also collapses a full 5 inches for enhanced driver safety. Both are available with a quick-disconnect steering wheel.
How much: $790.92 for Pro-Lite

Constructed from billet aluminum and featuring needle-bearing fulcrums and roller tips to decrease friction, purple rockers are available in either stock or high-lift 1.80-ratio versions. Howards Cams has roller tip billet aluminum rocker arm kits available for Ford and other GM applications as well, although not all kits are direct bolt-ins. Made in the USA.

Why you care: Developed specifically for 2010 and newer 5.0L Coyote engines, these three-layer MLS exhaust gaskets are made of stainless steel and are .072-inch thick with 1 7/8-inch round ports. On the traditional small-block side, Mr. Gasket’s new Ultra-Seal Intake Manifold Gasket Set for Windsors is ideal for use with Holley Hi-Ram manifolds and is compatible with Ford 260-351W, TFS, GT-40, and “N” cylinder heads. They’re .093-inch thick and fit 1.40-inch x 2.25-inch intake ports.
