Hello, Memphis! This has to be one of the most eclectic mixes of things-to-do I’ve seen in a while: we have an experimental theater festival, a horse show, a classic rock concert, a fancy picnic-and-champagne party, a couple of races, a soccer game, a free puppy party, and live wrestling. I dare you to dig in and try something new this weekend. Here are the five things you won’t want to miss. But first, be sure you didn’t miss anything on the blog this week: the 4th of July guide is up, we have 10 ideas for volunteer projects in June, details on the Tour Dé Taste picnic, the Craft Food & Wine Fest, and Fringe Festival, plus lots of live music. Photo by Maddie Robinson, provided by T. Clifton Art on Broad Ave. OK, here’s your weekend guide. 1. 71st Annual Germantown Charity Horse Show, 7745 Poplar Pike, through Saturday, $5 adults/free for 6 and under, all ages This Germantown tradition is part sporting event, part festival, and definitely worth checking out if you have any interest in horses, socializing, or seeing something new and different. Several food vendors will be on site, as well as vendors selling art and high-end goods. Proceeds benefit Kindred Place. 2. Pup Party On Broad, Broad Avenue, Friday, 5 p.m. – 8 p.m., free, all ages/kid-friendly It’s time for another First Friday on Broad! The shops and galleries on the street are celebrating with a special dog-themed evening with dog training demos, treats (for pups and people), and a pet-and-person lookalike contest, and more. See the whole schedule here. Dog costumes are highly encouraged, but the only things required are a leash and good behavior. 3. Live At The Garden feat. Kansas, Memphis Botanic Garden, Friday, gates open at 6 p.m., general admission $40+ fees, 21+ The Botanic Garden’s popular annual concert series, now in its 19th season, features five crowd-pleasing/old-school favorites, starting this weekend with Kansas. Coolers, blankets and chairs are welcome for lawn seating, and the crowd is decidedly adult. The VIP tents up front can obscure the view depending on where you sit, but it’s really all about the picnicking and partying, anyways. See the full lineup. 4. Memphis 901 FC v. Indy Eleven Soccer Match, AutoZone Park, Saturday, 7:30 p.m., $15+, all ages/kid-friendly If you haven’t seen our 901FC soccer team play at AutoZone Park yet, what are you waiting for? Whether you join the Bluff City Mafia near their rowdy section or chill in a club level seat, it’s going to be an exciting game. This weekend’s match is PRIDE night, so the team will partner with OUTMemphis and the Bluff City Sports Association in raising awareness for the Metamorphosis Project. OUTMemphis’s response to LGBTQ+ youth homelessness in Memphis. 5. Spillit Slam: Around the Fringes with Memphis Film Festival, Saturday, McCoy Theatre at Rhodes College, 8:30. – 10 p.m., $10, adults The theme for this event is “Around the Fringes.” Storytellers who have their names drawn will have five minutes to share their story with an audience, and the slam winner will be invited to compete in the Story Grand Slam in November for the title of Grand Master Storyteller of Memphis. This is the last Spillit of the summer, so don’t miss out. Spillit is a part of the Fringe Festival, which is going on all weekend and all next weekend. Be sure to check out the details here. Plus a few extras… Tour Dé Toast Memphis, Pink Palace Mansion, Saturday, 3 p.m. – 8 p.m., $75, 21 and up The inaugural Tour Dé Toast is a champagne tasting and picnic – and a whole lineup of local live music – on the lawn of the Pink Palace Mansion. Three local chefs will have small plates for sale. Spring chic attire and a pastel-colored picnic blanket are required, and online ticket sales close at midnight Thursday. If it’s not too late, read all the details here. Real Memphis Wrestling, Rec Room, Saturday, 7 – 9 p.m., $5 cover, under 21 welcome with parent or guardian Real, live professional wrestling returns to Memphis, now with beer. All Weekend Cloud 9 Memphis Presents Four Places, Theatreworks Memphis, select dates and times June 7 – 23, $20 adults/$15 seniors and students When Peggy’s two adult children take her out for lunch, they quietly begin to take her life apart. The drinks come fast, the tempers peak, the food flies. Hairspray, Theatre Memphis, all weekend and through June 30, times and ticket prices vary, all ages In 1962 Baltimore, Tracy Turnblad dreams of being on a local TV dance show. When she wins a role on the show, she becomes an overnight celebrity and meets a colorful cast of characters, leading to social change as Tracy campaigns for the show’s integration. The Legend of Georgia McBride Opens, Playhouse on the Square, all weekend, 8 p.m. – 10 p.m., prices vary, adults Casey is young, he’s broke, his landlord’s knocking at the door, and he’s just found out his wife is pregnant. To make matters even more desperate, he’s fired from his gig as an Elvis impersonator in a small-town Florida bar, and the bar owner brings in a B-level drag show to replace his act. Friday Memphis 69 Screening, Crosstown Theatre, Friday, doors at 7 p.m., film at 7:30 p.m., tickets $7, all ages This concert documentary, shot over three days in June of 1969 at the Levitt Shell, celebrates Memphis’ 150th birthday with blues music from icons like Bukka White, Furry Lewis, and Rufus Thomas. Followed by a Q & A with Bruce Watson of Fat Possum Records and filmmakers Joe and Lisa Lamattina. After-party to follow in The Green Room at Crosstown Arts — free admission with a Memphis ’69 screening ticket and $10 without. Wedding Belles on Millionaire’s Row: Exhibit Opening, Woodruff-Fontaine and Mallory-Neely Mansions, Friday, 5 – 8 p.m., $35 Dozens of exquisite wedding gowns spanning from the 1850s -1960s will be on display in two historic mansions in Victorian Village. Enjoy open house-style tours and light refreshments. Prince Birthday Party, 405 N. Cleveland, Friday, 6:30 p.m. – 10:30 p.m., $20 donation, 18+ Celebrate Prince’s birthday with the Mid-South Peace & Justice Center this Friday. They’re screening Purple Rain and Sign O’ The Times. It’s a members-only event, but the membership fee is just $20. If you’re already a member, be sure to support the MSPJC with a suggested donation of $20. Be sure to sign up and reserve your space here. Saturday Beer & Bagel Off-Road Race, Wolf River Greenway, Saturday, 9 a.m. $45 regular registration, all ages This event will feature a unique course starting from the Humphreys Boulevard trailhead, followed by a blowout party with DJ, dancing, tailgate games, photos with Sasquatch, and plenty of bagels and beer. A portion of the entry fee will go to the Wolf River Conservancy. Literatini, Novel Memphis Bookstore, Saturday, 7 – 10 p.m., tickets: $50 per individual, $75 per couple, 21+ Enjoy live music as you sample cocktails and delicious food from local bars and restaurants. Receive 20 percent off bookstore purchases the night of the event, with proceeds benefiting Memphis adults struggling with low literacy. Night at the Lorraine, National Civil Rights Museum, Saturday, 7 – 11 p.m., $100 +, adults Step back in time with an evening of food, live music, dancing and fun reminiscent of the Lorraine Motel – which counted B.B. King, Nat King Cole, Isaac Hayes, and Jackie Robinson among its famous guests. Sunday Sunday is a little more chill, but there’s still plenty to do. You can grab some brunch from the lobster food truck at Memphis Made, a fried hen ‘n’ waffle at Ghost River, or the Hi-Tone’s new $10 all-you-can-handle pancake hangover brunch. (Or any of the many other places to eat brunch) Take a bike tour to three breweries with Curious Bike Tours or catch concerts at the Levitt Shell or the Green Room at Crosstown Arts. Catch a show (inside! away from rain and heat!) at any of the show listed in the “All Weekend” section above, plus Ballet On Wheels’ The Wiz at the Halloran Center or Anastasia the musical at The Orpheum proper. Have a great weekend and come back here to tell me all about it on Monday! Are you a home owner in Memphis, with a broken garage door?
