One of the nurses gently waves her hands. "Alright, deep breaths Mrs.Hyde." She assured. Mia glares, "Forman-Hyde dillhole!"

Reggie runs to face in front of her. "Okay Mia, I know you’re scared a—" Mia glares harder, "Fuck you Reggie I'm not scared! I'm pissed! You did this to me! Now I'm gonna be all disgusting and never walk in public again and our kid's gonna hate me and—"

"No he's not! Mia…" Reggie gently places his hands on her shoulders. "You're beautiful and always will be. And our kid will have all this love in the world. You know why?" He softly asks. "Why?" Mia asks, hyperventilating.

"Because he's got a mom like you. You're strong and tough. And you're ruthless. Hell, even more ruthless than mommy." Mia shakes her head, "Not even gonna touch on the fact that you're 27 years old and still call your mother 'mommy'. But do you really mean all of that?" She asks. Reggie nods, "I do." He pecks Mia on the lips. Mia nods and smiles. She then continues to try and push out the baby for the next fifteen seconds.

I am at Froedtert Medical Hospital.

I have been here for 10 days.

I slept for the first 5.

They didn’t know where to put me in the hospital.

I ended up on the Blood Floor.

Jordan is one of at least 46 people sued by Froedtert in small claims court since March 12. Those cases are among at least 148 similar suits filed statewide by health systems over the same period, according to an analysis of small claims cases by Wisconsin Public Radio and Wisconsin Watch.

Steve Schooff, a spokesman for the hospital, said on March 31st that Froedtert “suspended filing small claims suits” as of March 18 in response to COVID-19.

“In addition, we continue to work with patients related to financial counseling and are allowing patients with financial hardship who are on a payment plan to defer payments while financial assistance is discussed with them,” he said.

Yet court records at the time showed at least 18 lawsuits filed on the hospital’s behalf since March 18th, including 15 filed on March 31 alone. (The suit against Jordan was filed on March 17.) All 18 of those cases have since been dismissed.

These are all old debts, either! Milwaukee's Froedtert Hospital filed 46 claims after WI's state of emergency was declared on Mar 12. They're not alone: WI hospitals have embarked on an orgy of debt litigation against patients since the pandemic.

When questioned by Propublica, Froedtert blamed its litigation on "miscommunications" and said it had dismissed the claims from after the start of the emergency.

One of the worst offenders is Johns Hopkins, the largest private-sector employer and the top beneficiary of Michael Bloomberg's charitable giving. The hospital has continued its long tradition of industry-leading aggressive debt collection through the crisis.

They have perfected the art of garnisheeing former patients' wages, and just one branch of the hospital, Bayview, has filed 60 more cases since the start of the crisis.

Victims of hospital debt collection are especially burdened now, and not just because of the crisis: they're also receiving late notifications of legal proceedings against them, so they are often unable to defend themselves before their wages are seized.

Some of the victims are health-care workers. Propublica tells the story of Cheri Long, a nurse at a WV assisted living facility, who is borrowing gas money to get to work because West Virginia University Hospitals took all her pay to cover her husband's old medical debts.

The hospital issued new guidance to its arm-breakers: "“At WVU Medicine, we need to balance our need to liquidate patient balances with the needs of our community, especially during times of disruption,"

The hospitals involved are in line to receive shares of a $100b relief packaged voted in by Congress. For large hospitals, unpaid bills typically represent "less than one-tenth of a percent" of overall revenues.

Jacob Blake appeared in Wisconsin criminal court via teleconference from his hospital bed this afternoon and pleaded not guilty to multiple charges, including sexual assault, stemming from an incident that predated his shooting.

The 29-year-old, who was paralyzed from the waist down after being shot seven times in the back by police in Kenosha, Wisconsin, on August 23, appeared in good spirits as he reclined on the bed at Froedtert Hospital wearing a light-blue dress shirt and a yellow tie.   

Appearing via Zoom, Blake raised his hand to greet Loren Keating, a Kenosha County judicial court commissioner.

Kenosha police shot a man Sunday evening, setting off unrest in the city after a video appeared to show the officer firing several shots at close range into the man's back.

The shooting victim has been identified as Jacob Blake, a Black man, by Wisconsin officials. He was in serious condition at Froedtert Hospital in Milwaukee as of early Monday morning.

The shooting in Kenosha, a city located between Milwaukee and Chicago, occurred after 5 p.m. Sunday when officers responded to a domestic incident, police said. Video shows neighbors congregated outside while two officers with their guns drawn followed Blake as he approached the car. As Blake opened the driver’s side door, an officer can be seen tugging at Blake’s white tank top before multiple shots ring out.

A neighbor said Blake was attending his 3-year-old son’s birthday party on the lawn of his apartment building. The neighbor, a 23-year-old named Marie, who spoke on the condition that her last name not be used for fear of retaliation from police, said an argument began between two women at some point. When a police officer approached, Blake was standing near the silver vehicle in the street, and one of the women directed police to him, Marie said.

The officer “didn’t ask questions; he just grabbed” Blake, Marie said, and tried to use a Taser to stun him, which did not work. Then Blake walked to the front of the car, she said, and was shot by police.

After the shooting, Marie said, the women who were arguing blamed each other for the police arriving.  “He was a cool neighbor,” Marie said of Blake. “He was polite. Even if he had a problem with you.”

The Kenosha police and the Wisconsin Department of Justice did not immediately respond to messages seeking comment about Marie’s account.

Blake was taken by helicopter to Froedtert Hospital in Milwaukee, police said. The hospital declined to comment.

Benjamin Crump, a civil rights lawyer who has represented the families of many people fatally shot by police, said Monday that he had been retained by Blake’s family.  Crump said in a statement that Blake’s “three sons witnessed their father collapse after being riddled with bullets.” According to Crump, Blake was “simply trying to do the right thing by intervening in a domestic incident.”

“It’s a miracle he’s still alive,” Crump said.

Police have not commented on what led to the shooting. By Monday afternoon, nearly a full day after the incident, public officials had released only scant details of what had happened.

Trump — who has focused his reelection push on stirring fears about urban violence — did not immediately address the shooting. But in remarks on the opening day of the Republican National Convention, Vice President Pence made the administration’s sympathies clear.

Trump and the Republicans, Pence told cheering supporters, “will always stand with the men and women who serve on the thin blue line of law enforcement. We’re going to back the blue.”

MILWAUKEE | Milwaukee officer 'loved by everyone' dies in shootout

MILWAUKEE — A Milwaukee officer who “was loved by everyone” died during an exchange of gunfire in a house where police were searching for a man suspected of drug dealing and domestic violence, the city’s police chief said Thursday.

The lone suspect, who was not injured in the shooting Wednesday, was arrested after he ran out of bullets and surrendered, Chief Alfonso Morales said at a news conference.

Morales said the officer was Michael Michalski, 52, a 17-year veteran of the department who leaves behind a wife and three sons. “He is the person who you would want to cut out and cookie-cut and say, ‘This is what we want the Milwaukee Police Department to represent,'” said Morales, as three dozen solemn-faced officers in uniform and plain clothes stood behind him.

Michalski is the second Milwaukee officer to die in the line of duty in less than two months.

He was a member of a special unit recently formed to target the most dangerous criminals in the city. At about 5 p.m. Wednesday on Milwaukee’s north side, the unit went searching for one of those targets — a man Morales identified as Jonathan C. Copeland. He was wanted for a parole violation, heroin possession, harassment, intimidation and domestic violence, Morales said.

Copeland’s criminal record dates back to when he was a juvenile, the chief said.  Officers saw the suspect go into a house and followed him in, Morales said. That’s when the suspect started shooting, he said.

Michalski was taken to Froedtert Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Police vehicles with their squad lights activated later escorted his body from the hospital to the Milwaukee County Medical Examiner’s Office.

“Pretty much everybody loved him,” Morales said of the fallen officer, whom he called a friend. “I can’t think of anybody who has anything negative to say about Officer Michalski.”

Charges against Copeland are pending but he remains in custody. After the shooting, Mayor Tom Barrett responded to the scene at Metcalfe Park neighborhood and asked residents to pray for the families of the city’s police officers. Standing next to Morales on Thursday, he repeated those remarks and said the shooting “is another tragic reminder of the stress” officers face every day. “He went in there and made the ultimate sacrifice on behalf of the residents of the city,” Barrett said.

Michalski’s death comes less than two months since the department lost another officer in the line of duty. On June 7, Officer Charles Irvine Jr., 23, was killed in a squad car crash during the high-speed pursuit of a suspect. Irvine was the first Milwaukee officer killed in the line of duty in 22 years.

Gov. Scott Walker ordered that the Wisconsin and U.S. flags be flown at half-staff throughout the state until Michalski is buried.
