Freiburg's Schwabentor
Tumblr media
The Germany city of Freiburg im Breisgau, on the transition between the Rhine valley plains and the hills of the Black Forest, was part of the Duchy of Swabia until it dissolved in the 13th century due to the ducal line going extinct. It was around this time that its "Swabian Gate" was built at the Eastern edge of the town, facing the Swabian heartland.
Like Schaffhausen's Schwabentor, it has undergone upgrades and downgrades, taken damage and been restored over time. The current illustrations on the tower include St George slaying the dragon (1903) on the outside, and a merchant with a cart (first painted in 1572) on the inside, just visible in the picture below.
Tumblr media
Freiburg's Altstadt has many gorgeous, colourful houses decorated with trompe-l'oeil facades. An effort has also been made to preserve the little rivers in the streets, known as Bächle. Local superstition says that anyone who accidentally steps in a Bächle will marry a local - unusual to see a place that values clumsiness!

Day 19 - Freiburg im Breisgau (Germany)
I could've done without a heatwave in my last days of travel. It's the second night in a row that I sleep like shit because of the heat in these places that are not really prepared to handle it.
I walk around parts of the old town that I didn't see yesterday, and parts I did see but look so different with more people around and more shops open.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
There are stalls selling small wooden boats with strings that kids can carry in the tiny canals, and I actually see a couple of kids using them <3
I go to the bigger city park, find a bench shaded by the trees and enjoy a light breeze that comes and goes.
I was thinking of going up the castle hill with the funicular that starts in this park, but it's a really short funicular (doesn't get you very high) and is a little expensive for what it is, so in the end I decide against it.
I keep waking around old town alternating sightseeing and entering big shops to find reprieve from the heat XD
Tumblr media Tumblr media
There's a path along the river, but when I get there I see that it is mostly for bikes, and more of a "walk along" than a "stay a little while" path (like, no benches or larger areas, at least in the portion I see).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
There's also a spot in the river with large rocks where many people are bathing and/or sunbathing.
Tumblr media
There's also a canal, and along its course a pleasant area of bars, cafés and pubs - but the only seating left is in the sun, so I keep walking.
Tumblr media
The university is quite beautiful, made from the same dark pink stone used for the cathedral (I suppose it's some kind of local stone? Usually when many buildings are made from the same material that's the case, though you never know. In any case is a wonderful shade of pink).
Tumblr media
Around sunset the tempersture and the humidity decrease slightly, and it's actually pleasant eating a (cold) dinner on a bench in the park.

The new Ludwigskirche in Freiburg im Breisgau, standing right next to the old cemetery. Built in the 50s by Horst Linde. It’s a home to stained glass works of Harry MacLean. Mathis Orgelbau is behind the 1995 organs.
I really enjoyed the look of the unplastered red bricks in the inside walls and the combination of wood and concrete. Would spend more time there but got chased off by the awkwardness of encountering another human being.

The Slow Train...
...is a song by Flanders & Swann, commemorating the little rural stations which got the chop from the Beeching Axe, and was mentioned by @lizamezzo in connection with this post.
*****
@dduane and I travelled on something similar back in 2000, going from Freiburg-im-Breisgau to Jechtingen by way of Breisach.
The trains got smaller with each change, from an ICE high-speed to a Regional to the last one, a diesel railbus rather like this - some of which, I've read, needed only six paying passengers to turn a profit.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
That sounds a bit optimistic, IMO, though at the time we were travelling (mid-afternoon) it was full of schoolkids as well as people who'd clearly been to the market in Freiburg.
During a mere 15-minute run through the woods and vineyards between Breisach and Jechtingen, it stopped at three other small stations to let various folk on and off - which looked very like "properly serving the community" to us.
*****
It's always been highly suspicious that Dr Richard Beeching was instructed to "improve railway efficiency" (i.e. close unprofitable lines) by the same Minister of Transport, Ernest Marples, who had "an interest in" (i.e. was making money from) the companies which were building motorways - and who later fled to Europe just before his prosecution for tax fraud...
In addition, Beeching may have massaged his figures by recording only the rail use at slackest times, rather than at morning and evening rush-hours, but that too is only a suspicion.
Anyway, here's the song.

<1m german cities f/m/k: nürnberg/freiburg im breisgau/lübeck
Well, Nürnberg is in Bavaria, so kill Nürnberg for sure. I've been to Lübeck, and it was nice to visit, but I wouldn't want to live there, which I think is the equivalent of "fuck" for cities. So fuck Lübeck. Freiburg is small and quaint and in the ass-end of Baden-Wrttemberg, but it's prettier than the other two options, and only a short hop to interesting bits of France and Switzerland, and probably has some terrific scenery in the surrounding region, so I would definitely marry/live in that one if those were my only three options.

1918 04 Remember me - Russell Smith
Remember Me? depicts a hypothetical but plausible encounter between and Bristol F2.b of 48th Squadron, RAF and a Fokker Dr.1 triplane piloted by Leutnant d. R. Friedrich "Fritz" Kempf of Jasta 2 (Boelcke). The scene depicts Kempf zooming up and past the Bristol, catching the crew by surprise. The client was fairly specific about the attitudes and positions of the aircraft, but he left the overall composition and the choice of Bristol markings up to me.The Bristol Fighter was a maneuverable, heavily armed two-seater biplane, and one of the most successful fighters of the war. It got off to a poor start during "Bloody April" when it was introduced to the Western Front by the inexperienced pilots. Believing that the aircraft was structurally weak, pilots avoided violent maneuvers during combat. It was soon realized, however, that the Bristol fighter was actually a very sturdy aircraft that could be maneuvered as if it were a single seat fighter with rear protection. Bristol crews met with great success by using their aircraft in that capacity. By the end of the war over 240 pilots and gunners achieved ace status in the type. My choice of markings for this particular Bristol was personal. Growing up in SC I often attended the Shawfest airshow at Shaw Air Force Base located in Sumter. In my 20’s, as a budding aviation artist, I donated a painting to the 20th Fighter Wing which was based at Shaw AFB at the time. For those reasons I have had long felt a familiar connection to Shaw AFB. A few years back, though that connection became very personal. While doing some research on Ancestry I found that I had a great great grandfather who was a Shaw and who was born in Sumter, SC. I knew immediately there had to be a connection to Shaw AFB. After further research I came to find that Shaw AFB was named after 1st Lt. Ervin David “Molly” Shaw, the first Sumterite killed in the WWI & the only Sumter Aviator to die in combat. Shaw served with the 48th Squadron, RAF, British Expeditionary Force. In combat, he is credited with shooting down two enemy aircraft. On July 9, 1918, well behind enemy lines on a scouting mission, he and his British observer were greatly outnumbered by enemy scout planes and they perished in battle. They were flying Bristol F2b B-1113 at the time. As it turns out, 1st Lt. Ervin David Shaw, after whom Shaw AFB is named, was my great-grandmother’s cousin!Frederich "Fritz" Kempf was born in May 1894 in Freiburg in the town of Breisgau in the southwest of Baden-Württemberg. At age 19, he joined infantry in October 1913 and by August of the following year was promoted to Unteroffizier . After being wounded in battle and a lengthy hospital stay he applied for a transfer to the Luftstreitkraefte. Once accepted he arrived at FEA 3 in Gotha on May 6, 1915. He was then sent back to Freiburg to complete training and then on to FEA 9 at Darmstadt at the end of November 1915. In March 1917, after serving with various aviation units, he received the Iron Cross 1st Class and joined Jasta 2 "Boelcke". He scored his first victory on 29 April - a BE2c near Le Pave. His second was a Sopwith Pup on 5 June at Masnieres, then the 3rd was a Camel on 20 Oct. at Gravenstafel. He was sent to Jasta-Schule I as an instructor , returning to Jasta Boelcke in January 1918. On 8 May he scored his fourth victory, a Camel west of Steenwerke. He returned to Jasta-Schule I in August 1918 where he served until the end of the war. Although he only had 4 victories to his credit at war’s end, Kempf was none the less a respected and valued member of Jasta Boelcke. He died in August 1966.Of the aircraft that Fritz Kempf flew during his wartime career, perhaps the most recognizable were a pair of Fokker Dr.1 triplanes which carried similar

Hi everyone!! it's been a while since I've had a post like this, but here I am, and today I'm going to tell you a little bit about the new Sotheby skin!!
❗TW: fake blood
Sotheby skin refers to the 1977 movie Suspiria (the name of the movie is on the splashart itself).
Movie plot:
Susie Bannion, a young American ballerina, goes to Europe - to Freiburg im Breisgau (a city in Germany) - to study at the famous ballet academy there. When she arrives there, she sees a student Pam running out of the building in a panic, shouting something about some mystery, and runs away, and Susie is told over the intercom that she is not known or expected. She then leaves in a cab to a hotel. Meanwhile, Pam finds refuge in her friend's apartment. Left alone in the bedroom, the girl does not leave the feeling that she is being watched. Suddenly something pounces on her from behind the window and kills her brutally, and Pam's friend is also killed in the accident.
Details in Splashart and Skin:
Splashart as a whole references one key event from the movie, namely the death of Pam and her friend that was mentioned above in the Plot section.
This is referenced by details such as the wallpaper pattern in the background, the blue curtains, the shadow of the gallows, the hands of a creature, and the tile pattern on the floor that can be found on the splashart.

❛ would you like to go somewhere a little more private? ❜
sakhilsfha thank you so much for sending one in!! i took this as a chance to practice writing again<3 I have posted it here on ao3 where I hope to make a series of prompt postings :) 1,384 words. Mature rating because I'm still learning the rating scale.
The party is dry for a Zee Captain. Society elites and bohemians mix, tittering and speaking about things he cares not for. Apparently a duchess has been caught abed with a Rubbery Man or some other such disgusting thing. Regardless of the truth, they gossip endlessly where they stand with wine or some expensive Surface hors d'oeuvres. Likely is not to be seen, presumably working on some mission for the Honey-Eyed Hellion.
He bites into a chertapple, hoping that its ability to strengthen one’s will is not just rumour. He worries that he is bringing shame to Likely for his manner of dress. These people don’t seem the type to admire a Zee Captain or a Catholic. He knows very well that he cannot hide what he is. Well, if his appearance might shame her, let it not be said that his manner did as well.
Moving from the pillar he was leaning on, he enters the atrium properly. Blankets are set upon the grass and a myriad of candles have been brought in in an attempt to brighten up the area for lack of sun. Servants dash to and fro with plates and goblets in their liveried hands. A band plays lively music, the likes of which would have never been played on the Surface.
The Honey-Eyed Hellion notices his approach, a serpentine smile coming to his face.  He slips away from the group of bohemians he is entertaining and meets the Cardinal halfway.
“Old bird! I see you have finally decided to join us!”
“Likely seems to think society is good for my health.”
Hellion laughs at that, his yellow eyes narrowing. He is surely imagining the cajoling it must have taken.
“Isn’t it good for all of us? I hear the Zee plays on the mind,” he clamps his hand down on the Cardinal’s arm. “Come. We have the Bishop of Southwark here today! Perhaps another man of the Church would do you well?”
“I’m not an Anglican, Henry,” the Cardinal uses the Hellion’s name with acid in his voice.
“Well, well! It’s no problem. We all end up in the same place anyway!”
The Cardinal curses him; leave it to a devil to not understand the matters of faith. His agitation grows as the Hellion pulls him toward the crowd. Most of the crowd are human, gaudy in their reception clothes. A few devils stand amongst them, their strange suits and orange eyes marking them as different. Most notable is the short man in purple cassock, cantankerously reenacting what appears to be a wrestling move. This must be the Bishop of Southwark - the Cardinal can feel himself starting to dislike the man already.
“Old Honey-eyes, the Bishop here has been telling us his plans for his election campaign,” starts a devil at their approach.
“Yes! I think London could do with a God-fearing Mayor,” the Bishop belts out, deep voice fitting his mustachioed self.
“On that note,” the Honey-Eyed Hellion interjects. “I have here with us another man of the cloth! I introduce to you Archibald Phim, the Cordial Cardinal, Archbishop of Freiburg im Breisgau and Cardinal to Pope Leo XIII.”
The Cardinal raises his eyebrow at Hellion's introduction. He bows nonetheless to Southwark, taking his naval hat off smoothly. When he looks back up, Southwark is staring at him intensely. He smiles tightly back.
“Where is your mitre, man?”
“Pardon?”
Southwark glowers, “Your mitre. The symbol of your status? Why do you have a common captain’s hat instead?”
The Cardinal looks to Hellion for help, his face pleading. Hellion smiles sweetly. He sighs and turns back to face Southwark.
“I am no longer a Cardinal… I am simply a man of the Zee now. It is to her that I belong.”
His hands wring the hat nervously. The other devils look innocent. The human entourage warily whisper to one another and look between the two men. Now they know what he is… what he is not. Perhaps what he should still be. The Cardinal fervently wishes Likely was here.
“WHAT?! How could you turn your back on the people?”
The Cardinal laughs nervously, “Is it not impolite to refer to religion and other matters of theology while in a public setting?”
“Is it not impolite to turn away from the fold when we need all men of faith in this fight against Hell? Hell is here, man! With us!”
“Don’t forget…” one of the devils says, putting their hands on the bishop’s shoulders, “Who is funding your campaign.”
The Bishop of Southwark bristles at that, his mustaches shuddering with his grimace. Polite laughter comes from the others. Some come across as more sincere. The Cardinal simply watches, motioning to one of the servants for a drink. If he has to put up with this any further, he’d rather do it drunk. Polite society doesn’t seem to be for him. At least he has gotten accustomed to the Neathy mushroom wines so common down here.
The party continues on for some time. Subjects are danced around and feelings protected. The Cardinal manages to keep himself out of the spotlight and out of the conversation in general. His glass is filled and refilled leading to a pleasant buzz. He barely listens to Southwark’s ramblings or Hellion’s jabs. He accounts in his mind for supplies and fuel, gifts for the Monkey Emperor or intelligence reports for the Dark-Spectacled Admiral. Lately these mental notations are all that entertain him.
Out of the corner of his eye he notices something pale yellow. He turns to see a lovely image walking through the atrium toward the group. He holds his breath as he takes in the sight. The Likely Lass smiles as she comes toward him. She wears an elegant reception dress; the yellow colour of it brings out the faint copper tones in her brown hair. A series of white ribbons hold her hair up in a complicated  arrangement that accentuate the length of her pale neck.
“My darling,” she starts, reaching out to him. “I’m so glad you came.”
He takes her hands, smiling warmly down at her. If angels traversed the Neath, she is proof of their existence. His saviour from boredom and social tedium.
Before he can respond, the other members notice Likely’s arrival. They swarm like bees, chittering in their gossip with her. She looks at him apologetically, but turns to answer their questions. The Hellion pesters her with discussions of business. Sighing, the Cardinal smiles sadly and steps away to let her have her moment.
Eventually she is able to slip away and she links arms with him. She looks up at him, brown eyes twinkling with some plan of her own.
“Would you like to go somewhere a little more private,” she whispers, leaning into him. He does not fail to notice the way her body presses against his own. The scent of a gentle perfume wafts from her form. Desire fills him.
“Of course. I thought I would never be free from these… hm. Your colleagues.”
Likely laughs and pulls him past the pillars. She expertly leads him through a series of hallways until they reach a quiet alcove. No servants or clay men traverse this area of the chateau. His hands immediately go to her waist, pulling her towards him. In response, she raises a finger to stop him.
“I just want to thank you, Archibald. I know it is hard for you to relate to us when you spend so much time at Zee.”
His heart skips a beat at her use of his name. So rarely does he hear it. It is always Captain or Cardinal. Never Archibald.
“Thank you for trying for me.”
“For you, my love, I will always try even if I cannot claim to understand your people.”
She closes her eyes and raises her face for him. Without any hesitation, Archibald leans in for the kiss. Her lips are soft and her breath hot on his cheek. With one hand he pulls her even closer so that their chests press against each other; the other hand cradles the back of her head, careful to not muss her coiffure. Even if all he gets are stolen moments like this, he can live happily. His angel in yellow is all he needs.

Schauinsland
Tumblr media
Since it's been mentioned in the comments on the previous post, we might as well have a look at the Schauinsland, a 1284 m peak on the outskirts of Freiburg im Breisgau. Only 7 km from the Schwabentor, the base is accessible by bus, before boarding a 3.6 km gondola lift ot the summit.
Tumblr media
Opened in 1930, the Schauinslandbahn was the first gondola lift built for continuous operation, with the cabins running through each end station at slow speed to turn around while letting passengers off and on. The cable car takes the riders up the hill, offering panoramic views of the Black Forest. And then there's the view from the tower at the summit... I visited in summer, but it must be fantastic in winter too.
Tumblr media
The cable car is not the only transport infrastructure to be found on the mountain, as mines operated there until the mid-20th century, so some mining railways with preserved vehicles can be found. Some of the tunnels can be visited (though writing this post reminds me, I haven't been inside yet).

Day 18 - Across Germany
Time to travel to my last destination!
Five hours of train are too many hours of train ;_; especially if you're sitting backwards and you only have a little bit of window ;_;
Also this part of Germany is very similar to northern Italy (not the cool mountainy part; the flat, field after field part). Looking out the window, I could be in Lomellina or something XD
Tumblr media
First impression of Freiburg I'm Breisgau: very good! The old town looks lovely from what I see from the tram, but the sun is so hot that I decide to go rest for a bit and go outside later.
(I'm starting to feel like an American, but... WHY THERE IS NO AIR CONDITIONING ANYWHERE. I mean, I can guess why, but... Maybe a fan? A lot of places I've stayed in the past had just a fan and it was perfectly alright, and instead there is just the heat. Everywhere.)
Tumblr media
I take a walk through the old town in the perfect golden hour light, and yes, it's a lovely place. In some ways a nice parallel that this is the last stop when Innsbruck was the first (it's not the same area and they are not the same, but there's something of a similar vibe in some details).
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
One of the characteristic things of Freiburg are these tiny canals that run on one side of most streets in the old town. They are very beautiful, and there's lots of people walking barefoot in them, or sitting on the curb with their feet in the water and... It looks very refreshing but all the people that are doing it seem to be tourists and I cannot help but think about the tourists that bathed in the acqua alta in Venice (which you really, really shouldn't do). I really hope this is different XD
In the tiny Colombi park there's a small stage with some South American folk dancers. Love that I managed to find some musical event here as well :D

The Old Cemetery in Freiburg im Breisgau, Baden-Württemberg, Southwestern Germany, is a 2.65-hectare disused cemetery with a park-like character and one of the oldest cemeteries in Germany. There are around 1200 gravestones, about half of which are worth preserving. The cemetery is classified as a cultural and natural monument and is a testimony to the cult of the dead, the history of the town and the stylistic epochs of the 17th and 18th centuries. Here you will not only find individual and artistic graves of the middle classes, but also gain an insight into the religious consciousness of the epochs, from the Baroque to Neoclassicism.
I like our cemeteries, especially the old ones. They are often so wildly overgrown, full of old trees and statues that say something about the deceased. My father often took me for walks in cemeteries when I was very young and I always thought it was wonderful.

LEKTION 317🙏🏻
Ein Kurs in Wundern
Greuthof Verlag
