It’s been a while since I’ve finished listening to this podcast about Milli Vanilli, but this particular moment reverberates in my mind every time I think of them.
Everything Amanda, Chris, and Fab said about how Black entertainers are used and abused, then thrown away by the white people in charge when they’re no longer useful is 100% correct. This is why I always point out that you (a non-Black) can love Black music, media, and fashion, but still have no little to no regard for the Black people producing these things. They aren’t human. Just a prop existing specifically for your own amusement. You don’t have to treat them with respect and dignity in order to enjoy and, eventually, appropriate their culture.
And the plantation owner and Frank comparisons is spot on. Though I just KNOW someone’s gonna listen to this podcast, and try to undermine how big a role race dynamics played in this whole situation. However, if you look at Frank’s track record, you’ll see how he always seemed to profit off of Black artists (and also brown artists during the latin explosion, but I digress).
Anyways, Frank had not a crumb of remorse or guilt and never took responsibility for the pain he caused. And the fact that he couldn’t let them go quietly—he just HAD to destroy any chance of them finding success after escaping him is truly sickening. Like Fab said, he had already made his money. There was no point in doing that other than “proving” that he still had ownership over them and that they were nothing without their ol’ massa.

FRANK FARIAN (1941-Died January 23rd 2024,at 82). German singer and record producer who founded the 1970s disco-pop group Boney M., the Latin pop band No Mercy, and the pop band Milli Vanilli. He frequently created vocal groups in which the publicised members merely lip-synced to songs sung by session members. Farian owned the record label MCI and several subsidiaries. Over the course of his career, Farian sold over 850 million records and earned 800 gold and platinum certifications.Frank Farian - Wikipedia

…So Milli Vanilli were a pair of impoverished Black men taken advantage of by a predatory white producer, Frank Farian, known for making money off the backs of his Black artists??? And instead of going after this rich white man who orchestrated the whole thing, the public decided to lynch Milli Vanilli…
Like Howard Stern literally dressed his honkey ass in blackface and mocked them. White people wore braided wigs while destroying their albums. There was a class action lawsuit against THEM, who I’m pretty sure didn’t even have the money they were being sued for.
And sure, they deserved some criticism because it wasn’t actually their voices, BUT they never deserved to be hated. And it’s sickening because certain (read white) artists who have done way worse—like actually committed whole ass crimes—have gotten a slap on the wrist or people didn’t even care. But these two Black men lip synced to someone else’s voice and now they must pay. Yeah. That logic makes sense.
But anyways, there’s an amazing Milli Vanilli documentary on Paramount+ that goes more in depth on the matter. I highly recommend it.

BACK TO THE FUTURE: PRESCIENT POP FROM THE 1980s
Rampant artificial intelligence? Robot sex? Art made by machines? Information Age mental-health issues? Global boiling? Whatever your favourite paranoid vision of the future may once have been, you were right: they’ve all come true. Welcome. It’s been three decades since I was a teenager, and I find it fascinating to watch the prognostications of the 1980s manifesting themselves in real time only…

Boney M, a german disco group produced by Frank Farian, their members were from Great Britain, Aruba and Jamaica, and they were singing, amongs other songs, about Rasputin, a russian mystic and faith healer. They were fun; Bobby Farell, the dancer, was fun to watch (how on earth did he do this ...) and their music was great and still is.
They wore these costumes for a performance on a dutch pop music tv show, TopPop, in 1987.

Mistah Farian, He Dead
I just learned that Frank Farian, notorious music producer responsible for the most popular fake music bands before Dethkløk died in his house in Miami three months ago.
You probably don't know who Frank Farian was, but you know his creations, for example Boney M. Now here's the grand revelation you probably didn't know: Bobby Farrell, the big afro fronting the band, sang something between fuck-all and jack shit on their greatest hits. "There was a certain man in Russia long ago"? That's Frank Farian's own voice right there. "She's crazy like a fool"? Also Farian. Throughout most of their career, Boney M were lip-syncing on the largest concert stages of the world and not even once anything went wrong. Which can't be said of Farian's later creation, Milli Vanilli.
Milli Vanilli was Farian's titanic fuckup. The fact that the two himbos pretending to sing got pissed off because of Farian's bullshit didn't help either, and when the playback recording started skipping during one of the performances, the entire thing went to shit. Insult to injury? The himbos, Rob Pilatus and Fabrice Morvan, actually could sing, and did so under a different producer, but Farian kept stringing them along while having someone else do what they wanted to do. That's pretty much the long and short of it.
