No Spoilers Review - The Olympian Affair
Just finished Book 2 of The Cinder Spires, The Olympian Affair. It picks up during/right after the recent novella Warriorborn, though that's not necessary to understand the novel's plot. Does show how and why Benedict gets a Cat name, though.
Picking up 2 years after The Aeronaut's Windlass, Spire Aurora seems to have come up with a terrifying new weapon as Spire Albion prepares for war. Spire Olympia hosts a diplomatic summit, also including some of the other Spires, such as Atlantea--which seems poised to ally with Aurora. Albion's representatives must navigate treacherous schemes politically, socially, martially, and magically in a race against time to secure the information and alliances needed to win the day, let alone the oncoming war.
More of Grimm's POV, more of Espira's, more of Bridget's. Duchess Abigail Hinton joins the POV cast; she's lover of Commodore Alex Bayard, Grimm's best friend since their Fleet Academy days--and one of the few people who was present and knows the truth about how and why Grimm was drummed out, which gets explained in this novel. Abigail and Alex are both duelists which forms a cornerstone of the plot and some of the stresses inherent between them and other characters.
Gwen is now XO of Predator, learning from Grimm. We learn how and why he initially received the ship from Bayard. Benedict and Bridget are courting, Ferus and Folly still aid Predator. Espira, his warriorborn sergeant Ciriaco, and (Grimm's estranged wife) Captain Calliope Ransom, find themselves wrestling with the dangers of Madame Cavendish and her warriorborn attendant Sark, versus their own consciences. I like Espira a lot; he's a man of loyalty, faith, honor, and principle, and it's all tested here. He was an antagonist in the first book, and while still part of the Auroran military, his role is different in this novel.
We don't get Gwen's POV (except for at the end), nor do we get into Folly's head this time. A number of new characters--many of them women--appear, including a much less treacherous love interest for Grimm (Piker Admiral and warriorborn Captain Ravenna), another dangerous etherialist who has rank in another Spire, the sister of Olympia's leader--and Abigail and her assistants. I liked Abigail right off; she's extremely socially and politically aware and rather badass in many ways. She makes difficult choices for the right reasons, even when it might cost her everything she cares about.
The Olympian captain from the first novel makes a cameo appearance to talk up Gwen in front of her father (one of the diplomats) but then vanishes again. You'd think we would see more of him given his home Spire is the central location of most of the action.
We also get a trip to the surface and some of the inherent dangers present in this mutated world. It's mostly follow up to the novella and tying up loose ends, creates some random complications for a character, and in the end...is really there to give certain characters something to do and an excuse to be at the climactic scenes while not actually contributing much narratively beyond a ground view of horror and a relationship shift that could have come in other ways.
And more hints that this is a far future alternate Earth, where some sort of disaster hit--and there may have been outside influence to that. Some story elements of Dresden bleeding through? We'll see I guess. There's a map of the various Spires and some colonies that looks awfully suspiciously North America-like, if heavily altered.
We're left on a cliffhanger and several other unresolved situations that make me think the next story is picking up right off the end of this story; characters in a precarious situation might get rescued in another novella, or at the start of the next full novel. And I really need to know what happens with one of the romantic pairings, as they're going through some roughness due to certain choices. Some characters are going to deal with some permanent physical changes, and one familiar character does die (can't say it was entirely unexpected, though I still cried).
But there's some happiness too, and bonds of friendship and various kinds of love. A lot of hope. Some wins, even amid losses and setbacks.
And the Cats, of course. Still infuriatingly delightful, as they should be.
EDIT: Oh, there's a bit more racial diversity at least mentioned as a thing in the novels; Atlanteans are also noted to be typically dark-skinned, and a few other characters in their descriptions. It's vague but there, or at least left to imagination. More than I can say for anyone who isn't straight, as the characters reactions and assumptions are all pretty stereotypically straight, as is usual for Butcher, I've so far found.

I got tagged by @jpnpr - thank you so much! ;-) And excellent questions, too! :-)
1. Which superpower would you like to have?
This may sound odd, but when I was little, I always thought that breathing underwater would be what I’d want to do. That way I wouldn’t have to worry about drowning and I could get other people to shore with minimal difficulty. Now though, I think I’d want to fly. I mean - open skies, the ability to see everything on the ground, pretending to be a Night Fury, and also: It’s just freaking awesome.
2. Do you like chores? Which one do you like most?
I like making coffee for friends, but as far as chores go, I mostly do them to burn off stress. It sort of works - the only downside is if the apartment’s already clean, I sort of whir around like a miniature tornado trying to find things to rearrange and it can get ridiculously funny.
*me at my desk, enthusiastically piling things one on top of another* Surely I can find another way to organize my crafts!
*five minutes later in my closet* I knew I had another coat in here! I can use it tomorrow!
*two seconds later in the study* Oh, yes! I knew I had those throwing axes somewhere!
3. Which was your favourite subject at school?
I liked Literature, a lot. Though usually I got bored with the pace we were reading at and tended to skip ahead in the book. The teachers either hated me or loved me, it was never in-between. But I went to a lot of schools. I don’t think anyone would remember me now.
4. What would you buy as the first thing, if you had infinite money? It has to be for yourself.
Ooooooh, this is a hard one! :-) Ummmmm infinite money...mmmmm I’m going to say I’d find a good place to build a really, really comfortable home/hobbit hole, with lots of secret passages and reading rooms and cozy corners for reading or sleeping in.
5. Sea, river or ocean?
Impossible choice. :-) I love the sea, but rivers are so pretty, too. Also the ocean is magnificent. Yeeeeah I can’t choose. :-)
6. Anime, sub or dub? (if you watch)
Subtitles, all the way. I love the phrasing. :-)
7. Which language would you like to learn if you could?
Um, maybe Japanese? I’d love to speak it, but I have very little hope of learning to read or write it. Not that I wouldn’t want to, it’s just hard for me to match up sounds to characters.
8. If you wrote a song, what would it be about?
The importance of laughing in the face of danger, ahahahaha. ;-)
9. Favourite flower?
Forget-me-nots. They’re blue, they’re small, and they grow by water. Also they are just really pretty.
10. What would you change first in your personality?
Nothing. I mean, I wish I could change how people see me (often they underestimate me or write me off as annoying) but that’s not really something I can change on my end.
11. Which instrument would you like to play (one that you don’t already play)?
Flute or violin. (Violin because I love Lindsey Stirling). :-)
12. What are your thoughts on Shakespeare?
Some great lines and interesting stories, but definitely hard to understand from a human perspective unless you have someone good at storytelling help spell it out for you without making you feel stupid. :-)
13. Favourite fictional character?
Off the top of my head? *cough* TAKASHI SHIROGANE *cough* :-) But of all time? Ack, don’t make me choose, I have so many. :-) But top five from one book:
Francis Madison Grimm, Folly, Bridget, Gwendolyn, and Benedict (the Aeronaut’s Windlass)
14. Least favourite fictional character?
Sycarax Cavindish from ‘The Aeronaut’s Windlass’. She’s a bone-chilling villainess, and every time I read that book, I shiver whenever she comes into the scene.
15. Is there someone as your absolute role model? Do you wish to be exactly like this person?
I really like Lindsey Stirling. I would like to meet her someday.
16. What’s the worst personality trait one could have?
Arrogance. It blinds you, isolates you, and worst of all, it leaves you unable to laugh at yourself. It’s self-administered poison, and the only antidote is realizing you aren’t perfect, which, for an arrogant person, is nearly impossible to admit.
17. Would you like to be a king/queen?
Hell no. That’s a really heavy burden.
18. What about prince/princess?
Uh-uh, nope. Not unless I could also be a warrior princess. ;-)
19. Movies or series?
Series. Way more time for character development, growth, and interaction.
20. Anime or cartoon?
Anime, I guess? I mean, I really like both. :-)
21. Which one is your favourite bird?
Hawk.
22. Would you rather lie or be lied to?
Lied to. It’s not what is done to you that makes you who you are, it’s what you do. However, the person lying would mostly likely get a swift smack across the head for taking advantage of my trust.
23. Cinema or watching at home?
Watching at home, mostly. I do like going out to the movies for a new release, like ‘Star Wars’ or superhero movies. :-)
24. Your favourite game when you were little?
Make-believe. Many, many monsters were defeated with my magic powers (elemental in nature) and my prowess with weapons (mostly dirks and throwing knives) :-)
Feel free to join in if you’d like! :-)

Well I’m a little ways into The Aeronaut’s Windlass, so here’s my thoughts about what I’ve read so far:
KITTY!
Um, I mean, the main characters introduced thus far each seem like they have some pretty good potential. I have to roll my eyes at the Captain being named “Grimm”, but discovering his first and middle names were “Francis Madison” helps to offset that. I would also roll my eyes at his coat being black and red with skull-shaped buttons, but that was fairly well justified as being meant to look piratey.
But mostly I’m just squeeing over kitties. Half-cat people, cats with noble houses, cat politics, people who can talk to cats, cat spies being called Whiskers. This is awesome.
#book banter#the cinder spires#the aeronaut's windlass#as you can see I am bringing my most analytical mindset to this book

Bongo Boy Artist Kathryn Shipley Wins Artist Of The Year
Bongo Boy Records singer/songwriter Kathryn Shipley has yet another award to add to her growing list since joining Bongo Boy Records last year. She recently won Artist of the Year in the category of Gospel/Country Gospel at The annual Josie Music Awards show held in Nashville, Tennessee at Nissan Stadium on Sunday September 17, 2017. The Josie Music Awards is the largest most gala event in Nashville that recognizes independent artists domestically and globally! This awards show acknowledges the hard work and talent of these artists from all genres. About six (6) years ago and a big nudge from her best friend Karen Garner who stated, "you need to go to Church, God is trying to tell you..." and other signs as she says that followed, Kathryn Shipley didn’t know what was about to unfold but it definitely was, according to Kathryn a "huge blessing" driven by God. She started singing at St. Charles Christian Church in St Charles Mo, in a community called New Town. She volunteered there for several years before moving on to her new Church home Harvester Christian Church. After knocking on many doors to try and get her music to another level, Bongo Boy Records opened the door, and has kept the door open for her ever since. Kathryn stated, "I was about to give up when I literally told my best friend, I am going to try this label and see what it’s about. After a couple weeks went by, an email came from Monique Grimme who is the Director of Business and Artists Development. She told Kathryn, "Gar, really likes your voice you have a different type of sound." Gar Francis who is the A&R with Bongo Boy Records, had written a song called Shine Your Love, and told Kathryn this was the perfect song for her. The song received very good reviews domestically and globally, and has had radio play. Shine your Love has also won several awards, the biggest win to date, came by way of winning, The Artist of the Year, in the Gospel / Country Gospel Category, at The Josie Music Awards in Nashville, Tennessee on September 17, 2017. The Josie Music Awards is the largest most gala event in Nashville that recognizes independent artists domestically and globally! This awards show acknowledges the hard work and talent of these artists from all genres. Kathryn recently switched genres and co-wrote a song with Gar Francis called, "Those Eyes" which was released September 9th Worldwide. Kathryn who is a native of Louisiana Missouri is now back in the studio and working on some new material with Gar and Nashville Musician Eric Barfield. Alphabet soup character genders
the names actually are in order of feminine, masculine, and gender-neutral. In theory, the player will get to pick the gender and appearance of the ROs with a few exceptions, and you might've noticed not every character has a gender-neutral option (I couldn't find a good name for them and revoked their non-binary rights lol).
Abeni/Aatos Stoll: gender selectable Bea/Benjamin/Bailey Skinner: gender selectable Cassandra (Cassie)/Cooper/Charlie Menzie: gender selectable Dapisha Grimm: cis woman Esme/Eugene/Emery Francis: gender selectable Fiona/Finn/Francis Richard: gender selectable Georgie Abel: gender selectable Hayden Bauer: cis man Ihab Pau: cis woman Julia/Jacenty/Jay Andrews: gender selectable Kaia/Kai/Kaipo Nilsen: gender selectable Lark/Luke/Loren Young: gender selectable Melody/Milo/Madison Kelly: gender selectable Narith Polaris: demigirl Ofir (Ollie) Vargas: agender Penny/Pierce/Page Hoffman: gender selectable Quin/Quentin Rees: gender selectable Rada/Radek Werner: gender selectable Savannah/Samuel (Sammie)/Salem Carpenter: gender selectable Tavani Hood: cis man Ulyssa/Ulysses Klein: gender selectable Veronica/Vincent/Val Bourne: gender selectable Willow/William (Bill)/Winter Morrison: gender selectable Xanthe/Xavier/Xan Thomas: gender selectable Yazmin/Yanis Vlanos: gender selectable Zoe/Zander Cohen: gender selectable

The designs for the Alphabet Soup cast! Here's a quick run-through of their heights, ages, birthdays, personalities, and routes. (You may note that some have extra names, and that is because I forgot to make them gnc designs for some of the characters and have yet to update it). I plan to do introduction posts for all of them but that will take some time. Quick note the MC will be 25 so keep that in mind when looking at character ages.
Abeni/Aatos Stoll: 5' 8.6"/174.244 cm, 23, January 27th, A is upbeat, energetic, and very social. They're one of your classmates at college and as you get to know them more you learn just how much pressure their parents are putting on them.
Bea/Benjamin/Bailey Skinner: 5' 7.5"/171.45 cm, 27, November 12th, B is polite, mindful, and remembers everything. Another one of your classmates that after lending them a pencil you become good friends, when you realize you're B's only friend you have to wonder why.
Cassandra (Cassie)/Cooper/Charlie Menzie: 5' 4.5"/163.83 cm, 29, September 9th, C is laid back, curious, and patient. They work at the gas station you frequent, and they also seem oblivious to your crush. How can you get them to notice you?
Dapisha Grimm: 5' 6.7"/169.418 cm, 26, April 25th, D is blunt, sweet, and a little shy. She volunteers at the company you work for, do you help her realize her dream or do you let her remain the same?
Esme/Eugene/Emery Francis: 5' 0"/152.4 cm, 23, March 14th, E is protective, brash, and overworked. You first see them at the gas station and then you notice them at all their other jobs, what made them so gruff and why are they working so much?
Fiona/Finn/Francis Richard: 5' 7"/170.18 cm, 29, April 20th, F is hard-working, professional, and organized. You meet at a fundraiser your work throws that they write an article for, their best friend then starts to meddle and has you two meet up a bunch.
