Ingredients to watch out for in cosmetics

The makeup industry isn’t heavily regulated in North America. Here are a few ingredients to watch out for:

talc: has been linked to ovarian cancer

formaldehyde: this is used as a preservative and causes skin irritation.

Aluminum powder: This will absorb into your bloodstream through your pores and makes it difficult for the body to remove mercury from the body.

Thimerosal: This is a mercury preservative and can cause damage to the brain.

Ethanolamine compounds: These have been link to tumors and may contain nitrosamines that can cause cancer.

Parabens: Have been associated with abnormal hormone functions. According to breastcancer.org, they act like a weak estrogen into the body and have been found in breast tissue and breast cancers.

Phenoxyethanol: Has been found to cause eczema, skin rashes, and allergic reactions. If you exhibit symptoms similar to this, check your product and stop using.

fragrance: If it has fragrance on the label skip that product.

any type of metal: Some products contain-nickel, chrome, mercury, lead, or arsenic. Check the label before purchasing. Those materials have no need in makeup.

Considered safe but has concern:

Mica: while it is considered “generally safe” the concern of inhalation and skin irritation is what makes this ingredient testy. Mica can cause lung problems if inhaled.

Titanium Dioxide ( CI 77891 ): is safe unless it is in nanoparticles that are inhalable. These particles can be found from eyeshadow.

Zinc oxide: Be careful of the nanoparticles for it can be dangerous if inhaled.

This product contains 80 ml (2.70 oz) and has a more natural, slightly basic sunscreen scent.

The packaging is a squeeze tube and is a sturdy thicker plastic with a cap that won’t easily come off.

The sunscreen has a lightweight, creamy texture.

The cream blends out well and has a hydrating feeling on the skin. It's non-irritating and gentle on any skin type including sensitive skin.

It absorbs quickly and it does leave a slightly sticky finish. I found it was also better if you don't have super dry skin.

There is a slight flash-back but it's definitely not too bad.

This sunscreen is also water-resistant.

Recommended use is to apply at the last step of your skincare routine, gently applying to the entire face. After using, I found this sunscreen to be easily blendable and lightweight. There is a light sunscreen scent but it disappears quickly after application. It does feel slightly tacky after application that's doesn't completely go away so that may help with the application of makeup over top. It does mattify the skin and doesn't look too dewy. There isn't really any flashback, it just slightly brightens the skin. The packaging is also secure enough to throw into a purse or bag without it leaking or making a mess. This also has PA++++, the highest possible protection you can get in a sunscreen. I'd recommend this to people with oily and combination skin and people looking for a mattifying sunscreen that doesn't dry out the skin.

What I like: this sunscreen has nice ingredients and great protection. It does a good job of mattifying without drying out the skin. The ingredients are nice and not at all irritating. There's not any flashback and this product is really nice quality. It's got very high protection and didn't irritate the skin or allow the skin to burn. It’s also vegan-friendly so anyone can use this product. What I don't like: this product is a little tackier then anticipated so this may be a problem, otherwise great product.

This product claims to be a moisture barrier for the skin.

Developed by CRB Switzerland, this sleeping mask is made with mild ingredients (flower essence and nectar).

Directions:

Clean skin thoroughly

Apply a small amount of the product onto the skin and massage until the rose petals melt

After 15-20 minutes, massage skin in circular motions until all of the product has been absorbed

Remove excess product with a cotton pad

 First impression:

Packaging: the packaging is so luxurious and looks like a high-end product. The component is frosted and has minimal information printed on it. 8/10

Smell: this product smells incredible. It smells like roses mixed with Turkish Delights. 10/10

Texture: the product is gel-like, light pink in colour and has small darker pink pieces in it (according to the packaging they are rose petals). The product absorbs fast into the skin and does not feel like anything once absorbed. 9/10

Price: according to a post that I saw it retails for R139, however this may be an incorrect price. 8/10

 I started using this product every evening after cleansing my face for an entire week in order to reap the full benefits of the product. After the first week I noticed that my skin appeared more hydrated however there were no drastic changes.

Week 2, I started using the product as recommended, three times a week and in the mornings, I would also apply a thin amount onto any dry patches that I had.

Week 3, I used the product three times a week however, I used it Monday evening as a sleeping mask, Wednesday morning as a primer and Friday evening as a sleeping mask. I found that using the product as a primer helped my skin feel more hydrated.

I now use the product twice a week and I use it as a primer every third day. My skin appears to hold onto its moisture and appears more hydrated and even.

 Final thoughts:

I would recommend this product to anyone that enjoys skin care and loves luxury products. This mask was comfortable after it dried down and left my skin feeling rejuvenated. Using it as a primer did not extend my makeup (even though I do not use foundation) but it left my skin feeling hydrated. The smell is something that I cannot get over, it smells so good and did not irritate my sensitive skin. Even though the product did not drastically change my skin, I definitely noticed a difference in my skin.

I was so awestruck at how beautifully this foundation photographed! I was shooting on a hot summer day with no air conditioning in my house, yet this managed to stay put through the sweat and oil. I bought the full version of this foundation, but quickly forgot about it as my foundation collection grew rapidly. One night when filming a makeup tutorial I decided to use it and thought, WAIT, WHY DID I EVER STOP?! This foundation is exactly what it's named: luminous, weightless, and lasts all day. #2 COVER FX POWER PLAY FOUNDATION ($44)

This foundation is pretty thicc, so if you're going for a more light coverage look, you can use a large stippling face brush to apply it, instead of a beauty blender. This foundation makes my skin look immaculate. Even though it's too dark for me now, I can still wear it by mixing it with one of my lighter foundations, and it mixes perfectly for me! I give this one 8 out of 10 hearts, only because it can feel heavy if you go full coverage with it. 💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗

#3 FENTY BEAUTY PRO FILT'R FOUNDATION ($34)

Okay, let's be real here- who DOESN'T f*ck with Fenty Beauty?! Rihanna is killing it in the makeup game right now and that's undeniable. I remember when this product launched and I got my hands on this foundation. It's so good that I'm literally almost done with my 3rd bottle, LOL 😭 keep going back for more. To be honest, this is hands-down my favorite foundation of the bunch. Almost instantly after applying it, you can see the formula mattifying into your face, it almost dries down to a powder-like texture. It literally makes your face look facetuned, lol. AND, FOR A HIGH-END FOUNDATION, IT'S AFFORDABLE!! (God bless you, Rihanna. We forever stan.) My only problem with it is that if you use a silicone primer with it, you actually end up looking more oily later on in the day. I would stick with just using a mattifying primer or even just a moisturizer, but for me it just doesn't work well with silicone-based primers. Overall, I give it 9 out of 10 hearts! 💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗

If you're looking for something really long-lasting, then this. is. IT. GURL. Once you apply this foundation, it ain't going anywhere. It even has its own special makeup remover that you can purchase separately! It stays put honey. If you are looking for something that is sweatproof, swimproof, and sexproof, then look no more! (trust me, it has passed all tests. Lol) As much as I love this foundation, when you apply it initially it looks a bit dull, because it is SO mattifying. It's not until your oils come in that it begins to appear more luminous, so keep that in mind when putting it on! You might want to use a luminating primer base like I do to get that extra glowing-from-within look. I give it 8.5 hearts babyyyy 💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💕

#5 L'OREAL INFALLIBLE 24 HR FOUNDATION ($13) 

Before I get into the review, I would just like to clarify that NO foundation, no matter how good it is, should ever be worn for 24 hours. Wtf, thinking about a foundation being worn for that long is making me break out🤢LMAO. But does this foundation have the *potential* to last for 24 hours? .....erm, no. Not quite. But I did wear it for 10 hours at Hard Summer music festival last summer, and it lasted the whole day! And if it can last throughout an entire music festival in 100-degree weather, then it’s good enough for me. For it's price, this drugstore foundation is the definition of getting the most bang for your buck. Upon applying it you can definitely tell that it's full coverage, but looks SO good as a light-coverage foundation as well!!!!! It applies the best with a damp beauty blender and keeps the shiny forehead/nose duo away. My only issue with it is that it emphasizes my pores, so I always pair it with a pore-minimizing primer. If price is your biggest concern, I would recommend grabbing this gal from either Walmart or Target! It earns 8 out of 10 hearts. 💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗

The mask comes in a sturdy, hard plastic container and is filled to the top with the product.

The mask is creamy and lightweight and a brownish-green color.

The mask has little clumps, which are the clusters in it and it blends out really smoothly.

It takes about 15-20 minutes for the mask to dry down completely and doesn't feel tight on the skin. It also has a cooling, minty sensation on the skin.

After rinsing it off completely, it leaves skin smooth and clean. It also reduces and blurs pores and doesn't strip any moisture from the skin.

Recommended use is after cleansing, apply onto dry face, avoiding the eye and lip area. After 10 minutes, gently massage with fingertips while rinsing off with lukewarm water. Use 1-2 times a week. After using, it's important to note this doesn't have any artificial fragrance listed but it does have a minty scent and feeling on the skin. The texture is very creamy and it's easy to spread onto the skin and blend out. The minty sensation is notable but not too strong or uncomfortable. The mask is very gentle and doesn't dry down to the point it zaps all moisture from the skin, it doesn't strip any moisture in fact and the skin doesn't feel tight after using. The ingredients are nice and there aren't any irritants listed in the ingredients. Not much is needed as it spreads out well and is very creamy. After rinsing it off, it does leave skin looking and feeling clean and it really blurs the pores as well. I'd recommend this to anyone, even to people with dry and dehydrated skin and to people with sensitive skin as it's quite gentle.

What I like: this mask is so gentle, it's really ideal for people who have dry skin. It doesn't suck all the moisture out of the skin and it doesn't irritate or leave the skin with that squeaky feeling. Its also fragrance-free and sensitive skin-friendly. The texture of the mask is creamy and really comfortable on the skin and it doesn't tighten the skin when it dries down. And it does a nice job of blurring pores once the mask is rinsed off. The ingredients are nice and there are no irritants listed. The mask has a minty scent and sensation and is really pleasant. What I don't like: the mintiness might be a problem for some people.
