The earliest days of Saint Etienne, a concoction of twee and club that could only have been a product of the carefree, complacent, arrogant British cultural 1990s. Much like New Labour just a few years later, this stuff is only really of superficial interest, tuneful and innocuous but gloating with its delusions of radicality and importance. It’s good that St Etienne has repeatedly cited OMD’s Dazzle Ships as reference, as both these works are pretty much generational copies – only with fewer original ideas and less remarkable standout pop moments.

Saint Etienne / The Night

Track: Hear my heart

Okay – ich war skeptisch. Mein Verhältnis zum letzten Saint Etienne Album I´ve been trying to tell you (2021) ist – vorsichtig formuliert – auch heute noch ziemlich ambivalent. Das gerade veröffentlichte neue Saint Etienne Album – schlicht The Night benannt – wurde ja auch als ambientes Album angekündigt. Doch im Gegensatz zum extrem kopflastigen Soundscape – Vorgänger ist The Night überraschend zugänglich. Auch wenn die Grundstimmung ruhig – fast schon relaxed ist – bringt das Trio Saint Etienne das in The Night ein, was Bob Stanley, Pete Wiggs und Sarah Cracknell mittlerweile über 30 Jahre perfektioniert haben – ihr Gespür für den großen Popmoment. (Half Light, Gold, Nightingale). Aber auch die instrumentalen Skizzen oder der eher experimentelle 6 Minüter Hear my heart sind von gewissem Wiedererkennungswert und schaffen es, sich im Gehör festzusetzen. 

Auch wenn das neue große Popformat-Album von Saint Etienne noch auf sich warten lässt (soll voraussichtlich im Sommer 2025 folgen), ist The Night eine durchaus positive Überraschung kurz vor dem Jahreswechsel und zählt zu den interessanteren Veröffentlichungen aus 2024. Allerdings mit der Einschränkung, dass sich The Night nur selten mit den grandiosen Saint Etienne Alben wie Foxbase Alpha (1991), Good humour (1998), Tales from Turnpike House (2005) oder Words and music by Saint Etienne (2012) vergleichen lässt.

What caught my attention first was the album cover. It seemed modern for a release in 1991. This record is a fusion of dream pop and electronic dance; something that would be played in a nightclub in London. What strikes me the most is its experimentation with synths and peculiar industrial drum hits. fav tracks: spring, carnt sleep

Saint Etienne, Park West

The beloved Saint Etienne seem to always play Park West whenever they come to town. Weird. Anyway, the band’s been playing two sets and an encore--their 1998 album Good Humor is the first, and the latter two are a mix of hits spanning their entire discography from debut Foxbase Alpha to the recent Home Counties.

Chicano Batman, Riviera

As part of Miller Lite’s Conciertos Originales, Chicano Batman plays a free show at the Riviera tonight. They’re still touring the excellent Freedom Is Free (one of our favorite albums of last year); we’ve so far caught them at Taste of Randolph and the Newport Folk Festival. Since then, the band’s vinyl reissued their 2010 self-titled debut.

French-Chilean rapper/singer Ana Tijoux and musica norteña artist Celso Piña also play.
