Jung Kook, Stray Kids, Ateez Help K-Pop Own 20% Of One Billboard Chart
For years now, K-pop musicians have demonstrated that they can sell albums like few left in the music industry. The most popular singers and groups regularly dominate Billboard’ssales charts with their latest releases, as fans across the U.S. continue to purchase–not just stream–their albums and EPs. This frame, some of the top stars in the genre prove this ability once again in a rather impressive manner.
This week, 20% of all the spots on Billboard’s Top Album Sales chart are owned by K-pop acts. The ranking tracks which titles actually sell the most copies every frame in the United States. That differentiates it from the Billboard 200, which ranks albums in terms of consumption, which also includes streaming activity.
Amazingly, there are no debuts on the Top Album Sales chart from K-pop musicians this frame. All 10 of the titles present on the ranking this time around from South Korean superstars have already spent time on the tally, and they remain popular enough to hold on again. A handful return to the list, but they’ve already placed on the roster before.
The highest-ranking title from a K-pop act on this week’s Top Album Sales chart is Stray Kids’s Rock-Star. The former leader is up to No. 2, coming in behind only Taylor Swift’s 1989 (Taylor’s Version). It’s one of two top 10 wins from South Korean musicians this frame, as Ateez’s The World EP.Fin : Will–another one-time No. 1–is a non-mover at No. 9.
K-pop artists fill half of all the spots in the next 10-spot tier. Jung Kook’s Golden (No. 11), Enhypen’s Orange Blood (No. 12), Tomorrow X Together’s The Name Chapter: Freefall (No. 15), NewJeans’s Get Up (No. 16), and Seventeen’s Seventeenth Heaven (No. 17) all find space inside the top 20, just below the top 10.
Three more popular releases from South Korean artists also manage to appear on the Top Album Sales chart this week. All of them return to the tally after falling off recently, likely pushed down as Christmas projects returned to prominence around the holiday. Stray Kids earn a second simultaneous win with 5-Star, which reappears at No. 31. BTS singer V comes next at No. 45 with his returning project Layover. Closest to the bottom of the list among K-pop offerings is Fact Check by NCT 127. The former champion blasts back onto the list at No. 47.

Other Outlander Actors
Tonight I watched for the second time the 10-episode series of Recipes for Love and Murder. It airs on Acorn. I first watched it a few months ago, then I found the book, read it, and decided to rewatch it.
It stars Maria Doyle Kennedy, and is situated in the Union of South Africa. I haven't looked her up, but I suspect she is a native of that country.
I often why Sam and Cait, Roger and Brianna, and David Berry get all the publicity. I wonder if Outlander actors ever get any publicity. Or is Outlander just a show for Sam/Cait fans, and they don't pay attention to the rest of the series.
My goodness, Billy Boyd, who plays Neil Forbes, Jocasta's lawyer, was big in The Lord of the Rings. And Jocasta is played by Maria Doyle Kennedy. There are others who I recognize.
Acorn has so many British (Scottish, Welsh, Australian, New Zealanders, and English) actors - so many that I really like. Great murders mysteries, and Sam is supposed to show up in one of the Midsomer Murders episodes sometime in the 130+ 2-hour episodes over 25 seasons. I don't know when since it does not list it, but it is among the many things Sam has been in according to his webpage.
So, Maria Doyle Kennedy plays a woman name Tannie Maria (pronounced Tunney), a woman working in a newspaper office as an advice columnist plus a woman of many recipes. The book lists a few of them at the end of the book (also has an index of Afrikanner languages). And we get to watch her put the recipes together. I want to try some of them, but the main dish meals are all built around lamb, lamb knuckles, or mutton (and what is the difference), and I don't eat meat. Not even sure where to buy it. I don't think my grocery store has lamb, but I may have to ask them if it is available.
Since I will eat fish, and sometimes (rarely, but sometimes) chicken, maybe I can substitute. She uses a large number of spices and herbs. The curry recipe sounds particularly delicious - just don't know how well it would fit with meat other than lamb.
Since my days of managing a merchant seaman's bar, I have made an effort to say "thank you" in nearly 100 languages, and Afrikanner was one of them (dankie, pronounced dankey A). Oh yeah, I bet you can figure out what "fok" is.
I also have a really good Scots recipes book, and I use it. I particularly like the cullen skink, fix it fairly often (uses fish, potatoes, onions, several herbs, and milk - makes a really delicious soup), and kailkenny (in Irish, colcannon), a veg dish using mash and fried cabbage, mixed, with butter (not marg). There is even a recipe using haggis, but it is pre-pared haggis, not one you have to make up yourself.
So if you like "Jocasta" and can get Acorn on your TV, give that one a try. She is a most beautiful woman, a good actress, and the recipes she shows in the episodes look really delicious. Next time around, I am going to write really fast and get the many ingredients down so I can try some not in the book.
Other Scots actors I like are Denis Lawson, Ewan McGregor, Robert Carlyle, and too many to mention.
There is more to life and pleasure than just Jamie - besides which it is really Sam Heughan I most like.

BTS’s J-Hope Owns 20% Of Billboard’s Rap Chart [Forbes]
J-Hope is having another big week on the Billboard charts. The BTS singer and rapper is back in a major way following the re-release of his album Jack in the Box.
Fans not only flocked to buy the full set but also the songs featured on it, and all that attention has helped the star conquer several rankings, including one that sees his name splashed all over the tally.
The South Korean musician dominates Billboard’s Rap Digital Song Sales chart this week. The ranking lists the bestselling songs in America that can be classified as rap. It's important to note that this tally is different from the Hot Rap Songs chart, which also incorporates streams and radio airplay.
This frame, J-Hope occupies 20% of all the spaces on the short list. That would always be an impressive showing, but it’s especially meaningful considering the fact that J-Hope’s songs aren’t new to the Rap Digital Song Sales chart, as they’ve all spent time on the tally before.
First up from J-Hope on the Rap Digital Song Sales chart is “Future.” The tune returns at No. 6. It previously peaked at No. 5, so it only missed returning to its previously set high point by one spot.
A few spots further down at No. 9 comes “Stop.” That cut once climbed to No. 5, and it makes its way back to the top 10 in its second stay on the Rap Digital Song Sales chart.
J-Hope’s last track that’s currently found on the Rap Digital Song Sales chart is “Arson.” That tune has already enjoyed a more impressive tenure on the tally than the two that rank higher than it does this time around. “Arson” once hit No. 1 on the roster, making J-Hope one of a very small number of South Korean musicians to reach the summit on the list. This week, it’s back at No. 10 in its third stint on the ranking.
Impressively, J-Hope’s name also appears on additional charts, not just the Rap Digital Song Sales ranking. Other songs from Jack in the Box have been classified by Billboard as other genres, so they don’t make it onto this list. His tracks are also doing well on the Alternative Digital Song Sales and World Digital Song Sales rankings. At the same time, Jack in the Box hits a new high on the Billboard 200, breaking into the top 10 for the first time.

tw for sasaeng related deaths.
✶ ──── more commonly known as just twinstar, the company was originally founded by two sisters for the purpose of elevating hidden talents to showcase to the world. after their tumultuous run in the entertainment industry, taking the world by storm in both acting and fashion, the sisters would build an agency in hopes of finding a specific kind of talent. those with dirtied hands and grit, those with the drive to prove themselves even if it stained their hands in the progress. they were looking for talent that represented the values they held at their cores, instilled into them by an unforgiving mother from a young age: WORK HARD NOW, WASH YOUR BLOODIED HANDS LATER.
taking off the ground in 2011, twinstar officially opened its doors to curious eyes as a talent agency. news outlets were quick to descend on the then meager startup, projecting loses unlike any other. the sisters were too ambitious, even with their influence in the world. word of mouth would only get them so far. and yet, with unwavering belief in sticking to their core values, twinstar would release their first star into the world within the next few years.
the first act that broke major commercial success for the growing agency was korean-american actress COURTNEY SOO, landing her breakthrough role in the blockbuster film THE WOLF OF WALL STREET alongside leonardo dicaprio in 2013. pushing both her name and the agency overseas from its base in seoul, the world tuned in to see COURTNEY grace the scene alongside the rest of the cast. and it only went uphill from there. soon nicknamed seoul’s sweetheart, her fame would only skyrocket from there.
following in her footsteps would come supermodel EDEN SOE—captivating audiences after going viral on twitter in 2014 for attending a fashion show after party hanging off the arm of one of the internet’s beaus. a classic marketing strategy done well, it wasn’t long until she was invited to walk for small brands, working her way up until she would go viral again for opening the spring/summer show for gucci in 2016.
after establishing their modeling and acting subsidiaries, in 2017 twinstar announced plans to delve into the music industry at their annual end of year celebration. with notable names in the crowd, it wasn’t long until social media began speculating the direction the agency turned entertainment hub would follow. and after fast paced auditions and rigorous training, twinstar introduced TEENSTAR to an highly anticipating audience early 2018.
teenstar’s run was one met with high scrutiny from media outlets and netizens alike, debuting a four member girl group with a fun and refreshing pop sound. paired with the newest fashion and alluring personalities, the quartet steadily began to climb charts both at home and overseas—not without constant attention and controversy, though. rivaling groups like LOONA and IZ*ONE, teenstar exceeded all expectations regardless of they were loved or hated.
fantasia. ͏ ͏͏ ͏ ͏৲ ͏ ͏͏ ͏ one half of the company’s beginnings, fantasia was established by PARK HWAYEON to bring in a new age of acting talent. notorious for its high quality auditions and harsh mentors, nothing but stellar reviews have been left in the wake of each actor underneath the label. and with ushering in new faces comes the opportunity for diversifying the field, promising a wide range of talent across all genres. with its newfound success, fantasia began pocketing connections with other companies like netflix and a24, aiming to spread their influence around the world. their most famous faces include COURTNEY SOO and ALANI LOUISE SUTTON.
hwayoung model management. ͏ ͏͏ ͏ ͏৲ ͏ ͏͏ ͏ currently number four on forbes’ most influential model agencies list, hwayoung model management—hmm—is considered one of the top options in south korea. founded by PARK HWAYOUNG and co-managed by her spouse KANG SUBIN, whose comments are always sought by fashion press. hmm has previously previously housed the likes of JEONG NARI and EDEN SOE. the label also took part in an award-winning seven-part documentary series called FINDING STARDOM back in 2016 as a behind the scenes partnership with netflix. it was one of the most watched series of that year and received critical acclaim.
toska records. ͏ ͏͏ ͏ ͏৲ ͏ ͏͏ ͏ established in 2017, toska records was founded with the purpose of making waves in the music industry with all their accumulated knowledge. the twins’ father being an acclaimed producer for many first generation artists, they already had one foot in the door. although they would only debut one group, TEENSTAR took the world by storm when they first broke into the scene in 2018. four girls, one sound, and one dream. and despite their two and a half year run, TEENSTAR’s legacy still lives on through their dedicated fans. the girls would set a major standard for music production and performance, leading their generation in synchronization and stage presence.

Forbes Article - Jimin’s Single SGMB
by: Hugh McIntyre Senior Contributor
2024 is turning out to be a very busy year for the members of BTS in regards to their solo careers. Several of the singers that make up the band have already dropped songs and albums, and there are more projects expected in the coming weeks and months. Jimin, one of the seven men in the vocal group, has launched the latest chapter in his time apart from the septet, and fans in America are apparently very interested in what he’s up to.
Jimin’s new single “Smeraldo Garden Marching Band” currently sits at No. 1 on the iTunes chart in the U.S. The track was released early in the morning on Friday (June 28), and it shot right to the top of the list of the bestselling tracks in the country.
“Smeraldo Garden Marching Band” fronts Jimin’s upcoming project Muse. The set is scheduled to arrive on July 19, so fans will get to listen to the complete effort in only a few weeks.
Jimin is not alone in his new win. “Smeraldo Garden Marching Band” credits South Korean rapper Loco, so both musicians currently appear at No. 1 on the U.S. iTunes tally.
The BTS artist beats plenty of superstars to the top spot on the iTunes ranking in America. This Friday, new music arrived from musicians like Camila Cabello, Drake, Kelsea Ballerini, Noah Kahan, and even Blackpink singer Lisa. All of them pushed their latest tunes to the sales chart, but none of them are competing with Jimin at the moment.
Based on how well “Smeraldo Garden Marching Band” is selling, and considering Jimin’s popularity, the singer may have a new hit on his hands. The just-dropped single already stands a good shot at reaching Billboard’s Digital Song Sales chart next week, which is a list that the BTS star is familiar with.
If “Smeraldo Garden Marching Band” can continue to sell especially well throughout the next several days, Jimin may be able to score a new Hot 100 hit as well. That ranking, which is the most important songs chart in America, uses a methodology that combines sales, streams, and radio play to show which tunes are the most consumed in the country. It’s unlikely that “Smeraldo Garden Marching Band” will become a radio hit–at least not at first–and streams may not match purchases. Sales are likely the BTS singer’s best shot at reaching the tally, and all signs point to success.

He is a multilingual speaker. He communicates in Korean, English, and Bahasa Indonesia. Yet he stated that he is not fluent in Bahasa Indonesia¹.
Rise to prominence.
Mosha is a South Korean actor under Hoshka Lim Agency (HLA & Co.). The issue was raging because his name was similar to the agency and people started calling him Nepo Baby. Yet the agency released their statement that Mosha is a self made-up actor who built his reputation from scratch.
He began his career as a kid in television productions, appearing in the drama series Run Away in 2000. In 2004 he made his film debut in the comedy drama How to Be Gangnamian and appeared in Jo Kihyun’s romance film Should Be You as Lee Yoo. Several media publications consider Lim to be among the most talented actors of his generation.Remarking upon his performance, Kenneth Turan of the Los Angeles Times wrote that “he might be the male actor of his generation”. In 2018, he appeared in Forbes’s 30 Under 30 Hollywood & Entertainment list.
Off-screen, Lim has been described by the media as a fashion icon, with his looks highlighted as his trademarks. Vogue named him the most influential man in fashion in 2019, writing “those fashion choices are all the more impressive considering that Lim styles himself”. In 2020, GQ ranked him as the best-dressed man in the world.
Personal life.
Lim splits his time between Seoul and Jakarta. Despite significant media attention and public interest, he rarely discusses the romantic aspects of his personal life.
Lim is an avid sports fan; in his youth, he aspired to be a professional swimmer. He enjoys hip-hop music and considers rapper Kid Cudi to be his biggest career inspiration.

A decent Reddit thread covering all the changes made to Blood of Elves by user r/Pongzz
With thanks to @clown-of-rivia for sharing it on Twitter for people to read. This is particularly frustrating given this quote that has been spread on several news outlets, including Forbes.
"...pushback among those who recognize that in the original books, not much really happened at all in Blood of Elves, and the show was trying to make do with anemic story, adjusting itself accordingly. Season 3 of The Witcher is reportedly going to stay closer to the south material, according to both showrunner Lauren S. Hissrich and star Henry Cavill, and some missing things may crop up next season as there wasn't time in this one."
So, which is it? Not enough content to adapt or too much? There is a long list of things that would have improved S2. A very long list. But at the top of it is more time spent on building relationships and believable emotional growth.
The things at the core of Blood of Elves.
The book they were meant to be adapting but decided was too boring.

Zhang Yixing 张艺兴 (LAY) 🐑 Overview
Zhang Yixing, known professionally as Lay Zhang or simply Lay, is a Chinese rapper, singer, songwriter, record producer, director, dancer, actor, author, and brand ambassador. He has been listed on Forbes list of the top 100 Chinese celebrities since 2017, at 20th, 11th, 5th, and 6th respectively for the subsequent years. In 2012 he debuted as a rapper, singer, and dancer with EXO. Please join me in celebrating EXO’s 🐑
Yixing is also an accomplished film and television actor, and has been active since his first role at six years old in the 1998 Chinese drama We The People. He later began his career as a child star after winning third place in a competition organized by the Hunan-based television show Star Academy in 2005. In November 2015, Zhang made his film debut with a supporting role in the Chinese romantic comedy movie Ex-Files 2: The Backup Strikes Back, which was a box office hit and garnered 2 billion in sales within 10 days of its release. The Mystic Nine series that he starred in placed first in television ratings and has accumulated over 12 billion views in total.
In 2015, he founded a personal agency for his solo activities that serves as a management firm, and in 2020 Zhang established his own group of companies in China, called Chromosome Entertainment Group, and began the process of recruiting trainees from all over the world. His autobiography, Standing Firm at 24, was a best-seller in China, breaking several sales records. Yixing has additionally served as a mentor, producer, and presenter for numerous singing and dancing reality shows in China. Zhang also currently tops the list for K-Pop idols with the most endorsement deals, partnering with over 30 companies.
"Monodrama," written by Lay and co-composed and arranged with Divine Channel, broke records by staying at number one on YinYueTai's V Chart for five consecutive weeks. In 2016, Zhang released his first EP, Lose Control, in South Korea and China to commercial success; it peaked at number one on the Gaon Album Chart and number four on Billboard's US World Albums chart. His first studio album, Lay 02 Sheep, broke five records on QQ Music: Gold, Double Gold, Triple Gold, Platinum and Diamond Record. Lit, his third studio album, had pre-orders of over 1.5 million copies within seven minutes; Lit went on to sell 2.5 million records, making Lay the best-selling artist in China in 2020.
Lay is involved in much of the production of his albums as a producer, and is often personally in charge of the composition, arrangement and writing of every song – as well as translation of the lyrics himself into other languages, including English, Korean and Japanese.
This post is part of an effort to celebrate the accomplishments of EXO over the past 10 years and to provide tangible avenues for supporting these artists in 2022 and beyond 🖤 On 8 April 2022, Lay announced that he would be departing from SM Entertainment after the conclusion of his ten-year contract with the company - we look forward to his future projects, both as a solo artist and as a member of EXO 💕
*Due to time/energy levels (not because I don’t love Yixing!) I won’t be including links this time, but this should be a thorough summary of his projects, music-related and otherwise :) His songs and albums are all available to listen on Spotify and Youtube, and his albums are for sale at most major retailers!*

How Aziz Ansari is redefining South Asians on American TV
He's clever and amusing, and he's also a Golden Globe winner. Meet Aziz Ansari, an actor of Indian descent and an influencer who has made a name for himself in Hollywood. With whatever project he chooses, whether it's Master of None or Saturday Night Live, Ansari has been busy establishing a discussion against racism and demolishing preconceptions around South Asians.
When Aziz Ansari began his career as a stand-up comedian in local bars, he had no idea that he would one day become the face of change on American television. The Emmy winner, who is on Forbes' list of highest-paid comedians, is showcasing diversity in the best possible light. This is the story of a Global Indian who made history as the first South Asian actor to win an Emmy and a Golden Globe.
Love for comedy
Ansari was born in America to Tamil immigrant parents and raised in South Carolina by a gastroenterologist father and a gynecologist mother. He was immersed in the performing arts from an early age and began attending dance courses as a child. Ansari excelled in extracurricular activities while attending the South Carolina Governor's School for Science and Mathematics, a public boarding school for outstanding kids. Ansari discovered stand-up comedy at New York University, where he was a major admirer of Chris Rock, and began doing open mics at local bars. While he went to classes in the mornings, he spent his weekends handing out flyers to tourists in Times Square, encouraging them to come to his events.
His stand-up earned him a free late-night engagement at the Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre in the mid-2000s, which was a hotbed for emerging alternative comedians. It was here that Ansari met his future partners Rob Huebel and Paul Scheer. To make ends meet, Ansari worked a day job at an internet marketing company while channeling his talent into his show. The trio developed their debut series, Shutterbugs, with Huebel and Scheer as partners. By this time, Ansari had begun to get noticed, and in 2005, Rolling Stone included him on its list of "Hot Standup" comedians. His first TV debut on ESPN Classic's Cheap Seats and then a memorable cameo in HBO's Flight of the Conchords worked in his favor, and a year later, when Ansari won the Jury Award for Best Standup at HBO's US Comedy Arts Festival, everything started to fall into place.
But it was Ansari's role as one of the main characters on Parks and Recreation that proved to be a game-changer for him – he starred in the seven-season program as one of the main characters. His performance drew critical acclaim and won him the top spot on the list of TV MVPs. Ansari split his time between television, Hollywood, and stand-up comedy tours for the following four years.
Racism in entertainment
Despite being a well-known figure on television and in films, Ansari has had to deal with racism in the entertainment industry. "Even though I've sold out Madison Square Garden as a standup comedian and have appeared in several films and TV series, when my phone rings, the roles I'm offered are often defined by ethnicity and often require accents," he wrote in a New York Times OpEd about the lack of diversity in the entertainment industry.
The show that catapulted Ansari to fame
Ansari's professional trajectory was ready to change in 2015, with another opportunity set to vault him into the league of the elite in the entertainment industry. Ansari put his wit and humor to paper once more with Netflix's Master of None, a program that the New York Times praised as "the year's best comedy straight out of the gate." Ansari was praised for busting stereotypes about Asian men and showcasing diversity for two seasons, purposefully using the platform to give voice to problems like racism, sexuality, feminism, and appropriation. With $9.5 million in earnings, Ansari made his debut on Forbes' list of Highest-Paid Comedians in the same year.
Because of the show's enduring success, even award shows couldn't ignore it, and Ansari was nominated for a Golden Globe for Best Actor – Television Series Musical or Comedy. Ansari made history when he became the first Indian origin South Asian to win an Emmy for Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series the following year. Ansari broke the glass ceiling once more two years later when he became the first Asian-American actor to win a Golden Globe for acting on television.

Blackpink, Monsta X, Twice And TXT: The K-Pop Acts Eligible For The Best New Artist Grammy
The full list of nominees for the upcoming sixty-fourth Grammys will be announced this coming Tuesday (November 23), and at the moment, countless artists are hoping to hear and see their names included in the long list of acts that will compete for the biggest prize in the music industry. Every year, one of the oddest and most difficult-to-predict categories is Best New Artist, which recognizes those solo stars and groups that have broken out in a major way in the decided eligibility frame. This time around, a handful of K-pop acts are eligible, as they have all scored huge wins in America and established themselves as talents to watch, but who can be nominated?
At least four of the biggest names in the K-pop space are eligible for the Best New Artist Grammy, as the Recording Academy has deemed them successful enough and “new” enough, at least in the eyes of American listeners. While some of these stars have been releasing music for years and certainly aren’t new to many listeners in, say, South Korea, they still stand a shot at scoring one of the eight available slots.
According to reporting shared by Billboard, K-pop groups Blackpink, Monsta X, Twice and Tomorrow X Together are all eligible to be considered by voters for the Best New Artist Grammy, though it’s tough to predict if they will end up competing for the prize.
At the moment, it seems like Blackpink might have the best shot, as they not only landed a No. 2-charting album, but they reached the Hot 100 with several hits in the eligibility period. They quickly proved that after a few years of rising the ranks, they are now proper hitmakers, so they could conceivably end up in the running. The other three names mentioned have all enjoyed serious commercial success in the U.S. as well, but it’s difficult to imagine Grammy voters selecting more than one act from the genre, at least in the same year.
While they weren’t specifically named as eligible, it’s possible that a number of other K-pop acts could be considered by Grammy voters for Best New Artist inclusion as well. If artists like Blackpink and Monsta X are eligible, even though they've been releasing music for years, fellow South Korean stars like NCT, Enhypen, Ateez, Loona and Itzy could all possibly be in the mix as well, though that hasn’t been confirmed by the Recording Academy. All those groups landed hit albums and emerged as talents to watch in the last year or so, potentially putting them in the running as well.
So far, only one K-pop act has been nominated for a Grammy, and they likely will earn more chances to win again this year. Last time around, BTS competed for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance with their smash “Dynamite,” though they didn't take home the gold. This year, they’re expected to be nominated again for their summery hit “Butter,” which could end up in more than one category. While BTS are by far the most popular K-pop musicians to reach American audiences, they aren’t eligible for Best New Artist, and they haven’t been for some time.
