Hilda as a show loves the broader version of this trope

“Raven is extremely powerful. But he’s a bird so he migrates south for the winter and just generally only shows up when he feels like it”

“Tontu’s abilities could let Hilda fast travel but she only gets to do that occasionally because he’s stubborn about it”

sometimes for narrative purposes you can't let a side character actually be very helpful, because you need a main character to be solving the plot problems. so you have to come up with some reason why the side character with useful powers is not actually very helpful. and one of my favorite tropes to come out of this is "people who can see the future are just fucking weird and mysterious about it for no reason and will not help you in any way shape or form"

#I’m poking fun but it’s not something I really knock the show for bc like. It DOES explain why these characters can’t or won’t help #which is a lot better than many shows do with a recurring side character that has useful abilities #Personally I think Tontu disliking bringing Hilda into Nowhere Space IS highly warranted and in character #Nowhere Space proves dangerous and unpredictable multiple times #And Tontu won’t say this second part so it’s played as quirkiness/jokes but: He’s trying to protect Hilda #For Raven he’s a bird and he values freedom so of course he’s gonna come and go as he pleases
