Based on Application, the meat & seafood products sub segment of the food coating ingredient market is anticipated to dominate the market.
Commonly used ingredient for the coating of meat & seafood products is flour, which helps to provide appealing colors and flavors. Different coatings are applied to the surface of meat loaves, sausages, and other meat food products. Both fresh and frozen types of meat, when subjected to extended storage, lose substantial water due to evaporation. It is desirable to have the meatloaves coated as the coating lends protection to the product and gives it more appealing organoleptic characteristics.
Based on application, the confectionery products is projected to witness the highest CAGR in food coating equipment market during the forecast period.
There has been a rising demand for confectionery products in the European region, which presents a mature market for the confectionery industry. Hence, this region is expected to show slow growth as compared to other regions. Confectionery is generally high in calories and carbohydrates but poor in micronutrients. Industry statistics show that, in terms of sales generated, the Western European region dominated the worldwide confectionery sector. Better-for-you products have become more popular as a response to health issues. The clean label movement has impacted the confectionery market because of the demand for colors that are derived naturally. Many food firms announced plans to reformulate their products to swap out artificial additives and streamline ingredient lists to meet this growing demand. Few companies have made acquisitions, with companies having a strong bakery processing equipment portfolio to enhance their product as well. Gea Group (Germany) has firmly moved into the bakery sector with the acquisition of Comas and Imaforni, the leading suppliers of demanding industrial processing equipment and solutions for the cakes, pies, cookies and biscuits, crackers, and snacks industry.

part one: a knights honor part 1
~~~
The following morning, you awoke with little sleep, your mind plagued by restless thoughts of the previous night's encounter with the person who lay in his bed just a few levels higher in the tower. You couldn't help but wonder if it had meant as much to Gale as it did to you. The memory of the subtle hints from the evening replayed in your mind - the scent of garlic in the food, the softly lit candles that had illuminated his features, and that exquisite wine. You just couldn't get the taste of it out of your mind.
The sun rose once again, and you hurriedly donned a fresh set of underclothes before making your way to the small mess kitchen for the soldiers. They had cleared out some students to accommodate you and your crew. After a light breakfast, you finished putting on your armor, securing your blades, and pushing your hair away from your face. You noticed in a nearby bucket of water that you were overdue for a shave.
Rotating the guards for the morning shift went smoothly, and you decided to start your day by checking in with Gale for the morning itinerary. You knocked on his door, but it swung open almost immediately, revealing a small cat with wings. You remembered Gale mentioning his tressym, Tara.
"Ah, Tara, correct?" you inquired, crouching down to her level. Her beautiful coat glistened as she sat, chest puffed up with pride. "It's a pleasure to meet you. I'm Tav, Gale's newly appointed knight."
"Yes, I am," Tara replied. "Trust me, I've already heard all about you. Follow me. Gale is upstairs changing his clothes again. That ring Miss Safar gave you allows you to open any door granted access by Gale or her. No need to knock anymore; you are his guard, and there's no need for that when there's an intruder."
Tara led you into the main front room, which was still set up just as it had been the night before, with the scent of dinner still lingering in the air. It was clear that the memory of the evening had left a lasting impression.
Gale's voice rang out from the stairs, "Ahh, good morning to be alive," and he descended wearing a cream leather robe adorned with silver and brown embroidery. "Now that I have you to protect me, I need a restock on supplies for the tower's research. Those apprentices never know how to get the good stuff."
A blush crept onto your face as you admired Gale's appearance, almost like a prince. You struggled to focus as you spoke, "That sounds wonderful, a nice getaway from the tower, I'm sure. By the way, I like your robe today, Gale... just Gale."
Gale's stubble had returned, and you mentally chided yourself for your momentary lapse. "Wonderful. Now, I know I asked yesterday, but will you join me for coffee or tea today? I'm going to keep asking until you say yes, I hope you know."
You reluctantly agreed, "Fine, a small coffee with just a little sugar. But not for too long; we should leave soon before the markets become too crowded."
"Of course, I'd never dream of making you wait," Gale said as he prepared coffee, adding a scoop of sugar, and passing it to you. "Thank you, Gale. It smells wonderful," you said after taking a sip. The coffee was rich and full-bodied, leaving a lingering acidity on the back of your tongue.
As you sipped the coffee, you and Gale exchanged glances and conversation, but a tension simmered between you. You pet Tara, which brought a smile to Gale's face.
"Right, well, we best get going. Tara, you're in charge of the tower while we're gone. I trust you," Gale instructed.
You followed Gale out the door and across the bridge, finding it difficult to tear your gaze away from his swaying hips and his gentlemanly manner. Perhaps being his knight wasn't so bad, you thought, imagining yourself as his royal counterpart. You found a focal point on the wall and took a deep breath to regain your composure.
You reached the markets, a bustling street lined with numerous vendors offering a wide array of goods. Gale made his way toward a table piled high with barrels filled with various magical components for his spells. You observed as he selected the best items, filling small bags and handing them to you to hold in your bag of holding, which had been generously provided by the tower.
Time passed as you watched Gale engage with the vendors, discussing the origins and uses of different items. You picked up extra parchment, ink, quills, and even some treats for Tara. After about an hour, Gale selected his final items, including fresh apples and bread for snacking while he conducted his research in the library.
Suddenly, you noticed a commotion in the crowd, and when you turned to investigate, a flash of a black hood darted through the bustling market before disappearing from view. Gale, preoccupied with choosing between Granny Smith and Gala apples, didn't notice.
You then heard a small stone being kicked at your feet, yet no one was nearby. Instinctively, you grabbed Gale and pulled him close, causing a stack of apples to tumble to the ground. Amid the clamor, a figure appeared, unconscious. It appeared to be the same drow who had been in Vajra's office the day before. The drow bore a Zhent tattoo, which had been concealed by a minor illusion during the previous encounter. You immediately alerted other city patrol guards, and they took the drow into custody for sentencing in the lower city.
You spent the better part of an hour assisting in cleaning up the debris and gathering the fallen apples. The grateful vendor offered you a generous sum of money for your help, but you declined, citing your duty to protect the city.
Walking back to Gale, you noticed his flustered and slightly panicked demeanor. You could tell that the recent events had shaken him. "Gale, this is my job, what I'm trained to do. I want to protect you. You needn't worry about protecting yourself. I'm here because Vajra called for us to ensure you can go to the markets without fear of attack and study your tomes without anxiety. I'll be in the room, watching your side."
You tried to reassure him, and his mood seemed to brighten a bit. "I saw a beautiful wine bar a few streets down. My treat," you suggested.
Gale couldn't resist the temptation of a nice glass of wine. You followed closely in his shadow down the street, navigating a bustling alley filled with tables and people enjoying their lunch. The yellow awning of the wine bar stood out, and Gale held the door open for you, as he always did.
Inside, the crowded bar proved a challenge to navigate. Holding onto Gale's waist, you carefully maneuvered your way through the patrons. Gale's waist felt slender in your hands, only to broaden into his strong shoulders. Squeezing slightly, you felt him relax, knowing that you were keeping him safe.
The bar was packed with patrons, but you managed to find an empty spot at the end of the counter to get the barkeep's attention.
"TAV!" a voice called from down the bar. A friendly lavender tiefling made her way over to you. "Bloody bastard, I haven't seen you in a while. What brings you here tonight?"
Gale looked at you in surprise, realizing you had frequented this place before.
"Well, it's quite the story," you began, and gesturing toward Gale. "I've been assigned as the lead knight at Blackstaff Tower in the Castle Ward. This is my dear friend Gale, and I'm here to watch his back."
Nyx smiled and extended her hand to Gale. "You flatter me, Tav. Nice to meet you, Gale. What can I get you to drink today?"
Gale responded, "The pleasure is mine. I'll have a nice, dry red wine, please."
Nyx vanished behind the bar, returning with a glass of deep red wine for Gale and a glass of grape juice for you.
"Wine for the Gale of Waterdeep and grape juice for the City Watch," Nyx announced.
"Thanks, my darling," you said as you took your glass of juice. Gale seemed slightly disappointed.
"Juice? You aren't drinking with me?" he exclaimed. "I thought you invited me here for a nice drink."
You chuckled and winked at him, saying, "This is a nice drink, but I'm on the job, silly."
You and Gale spent an hour or two chatting and enjoying each other's company. Eventually, you decided it was time to head back to the tower. Walking up the main road, Gale had an idea.
"Trust me on this," he said, "I know a scenic route back to the tower. If you trust me, follow my lead."
You followed him out of the east gate, and you walked along the large walls surrounding the main city, leading to a vast grassy field on the other side. A small foot trail took you both to a hill covered in tall grass, crowned by a magnificent willow tree. Gale walked you up the hill, periodically checking to ensure you were still following.
At the hill's summit, you were treated to a breathtaking view of the surrounding fields, cliffs descending to the ocean, and Waterdeep in the distance. Gale snaps and using some magic he spread out a blanket beneath the willow tree and invited you to sit. You settled against the tree, placing your blades and bag beside you.
As you admired the serene landscape, Gale seemed a bit distracted. You reassured him, saying, "Gale, don't beat yourself up. It's okay. Even if you were watching the crowd, you wouldn't have seen him. Would you read to me for a bit?" You handed him a book from the market. He takes the book, drags his finger down the spine, and he began reading about the history of evocation studies.
Time passed as you listened to the bravado of his voice, and he finished a chapter, setting the book down. Turning to you, he had a look of desire, yearning, and devotion. He moved to lie down beside you, resting his head on his hand. Using his other hand, Gale began tracing circles on your chest, his touch cool against the warmth of your armor.
"Is this...okay?" he asked, concern in his eyes.
You nodded slowly, your breath catching as his fingertips followed the grooves and patterns on your armor. His finger follows the knicks, and dings made from battle. The steel is cold to gales touch. He lays his full palm onto your plate, looking up wondering your thoughts, he chews on his bottom lip. A look in his eyes wonders if this is what you want. Following his intentions you plac you knee out, opening your inner thigh, exposing the one part of your body not covered in the cold hard metal protecting yourself.
Gales hand leads its way down your chest, and stomach grazing to the warm leather of your inner thigh. Hes fingers lazily trace the straps, drawing circles, his fringers slowly gravitate to the warmth of your body. His full palm wraps across you, he looks up to meet your eyes again. As the civil twilight bathed the two of you in its soft light, a salty sea breeze mixed with the natural vanilla and mint scent from Gale. He leans in to kiss you, and for a moment, you hesitated. But then you leaned into the kiss, cupping his head with your hand and deepening the connection. You wrap your leg over him straddling him, pushing him onto his back. His teeth bite your bottom lip, pulling your eyes open to his eyes you notice his eyes brown color, the color of healthy soil in the summer, the same color as the coffee he made you this morning.
Your duties as a guard suddenly came to mind. The changing of the guard was approaching.
Rolling off Gale, you adjusted your armor and gathered your belongings. "It's getting dark, and we've been away for most of the day. We should return for dinner, and I need to change my shift. I want to get out of this armor and have a drink," you said with a smirk, fixing your disheveled hair.
Gale nodded and wiped his lips, the blanket disappearing as you both began the quiet walk back to the tower. You followed the rhythm of Gale's steps, enjoying the sight of his swaying hips
When you reached the entrance of gales tower, Gale turned to you with desire in his voice.
"Tav, can I kiss you?"
You replied with a simple, "I would love that."
Gale's soft lips met yours, and the moment was electric. As the kiss ended, he whispered, "Thank you for tonight. I'll see you in the morning, starshine."
Engineering a coating for disease-free produce
Dr. Mustafa Akbulut, professor of chemical engineering, has teamed up with horticultural science professor Luis Cisneros-Zevallos to engineer longer-lasting, bacteria-free produce. According to Akbulut's recent publication in Current Research in Food Science, the global fruit and vegetable market loses over 50% of agricultural fruit production during various stages of produce handling and post-harvest treatments. Many fruits and vegetables already have a layer of food-grade wax that is applied for cosmetic reasons and to prevent water loss. Akbulut's research combines such wax with nano-encapsulated cinnamon-bark essential oil in protein carriers to enhance them with antibacterial properties. "We are living in an age where technology has advanced so much," Akbulut said. "However, the food industry has not competed with these advances, and there are continuous problems with food safety. News about foodborne diseases and outbreaks reporting hundreds of people becoming sick from unhygienic food frequently appears at the national level."
❥・• Warnings and FAQ
Roger: Harry explicitly mentioned the words “from me” as his condition for the challenge. In other words—
Kate • Liam: … Oh.
Liam: It doesn't count unless the information is obtained directly from Harry himself, huh.
Liam: Since it’s so hard for the two of you to meet, that becomes a tough hurdle. Wow, Harry’s such a meanie.
Liam: Come here, Kate. I’ll comfort you. Mm-hmm, huggie… there, there.
Roger: Pfft, hahaha. Looks like you've been fooled by the fox. My condolences.
Roger: But Kate. Know that I’ll always be on your side, yeah?
Kate: Roger…
Roger: Because if you become Harry’s personal fairy tale writer, you’ll get a lot of exclusive information about the fox curse.
(What?)
Roger: Harry is always lying, never letting me do my experiments on him.
Roger: If only he’d let me just do a thing or two to his body. The way he’s acting so mysteriously is irritating.
I remembered that the reason why Roger joined Crown was to do research on curses.
(He appears to be a “reliable older brother” type of guy… but he’s actually an egoist.)
Right. The members of Crown aren’t very easy to deal with.
Liam: I like both Harry and Kate, so I guess I’m on both sides.
Liam: I’d love it if Harry, Kate, and I could get along well. Let’s do our best.
…
By the time I left the basement, the sky outside the windows had already turned dark.
(I only have a few hours left. The moment the day ends, I lose.)
Harrison was most likely outside the castle, so it would be pointless to go searching for him.
(Even if I ask Liam about the places Harrison frequent, I highly doubt he would be there.)
I felt hopeless, unable to figure out my next course of action.
Alfons: My, my. If it isn’t the little robin who keeps being deceived by the fox?
Kate: Alfons.
Dressed in a long coat that fluttered like a raven’s feathers as he walked, Alfons stopped in front of me.
Alfons: Looking at your facial expression, you don't seem to be doing very well.
Kate: Guess the news reached your ears too, Alfons. … You’re right. I’m about to lose to him.
Alfons: Goodness. The very moment before you either win or lose a game is the most thrilling.
Alfons: … Hmm.
Kate: …?
Alfons: Worst case scenario, I might have a hunch about where Harry might be.
Kate: You really do? It doesn't matter if you’re only making a wild guess, please tell me!
(I’d much rather take the risk, than be a sitting duck.)
Alfons: Of course. There is a casino located in the basement of a restaurant Harry often goes to.
Alfons: Have you heard of ‘The Rose’, a three star restaurant in Leadenhall Market?
That restaurant was so well-known that even commoners like me had heard of it.
Kate: Yes. I didn't know there was a casino in the basement of that famous restaurant…
Alfons: Fufu, it’s human nature to desire indulging in food and gambling, so it’s not that surprising.
Alfons: Gentries often go to that casino, it’s quite a “high-end” place for gambling.
(If I’m not mistaken… a “Gentry” refers to a wealthy landowner without an official title of nobility.)
Alfons: I usually wouldn't send someone like you to a casino alone, but right now…
Kate: I’m fine with going there by myself. I doubt there’ll be much danger in a high-end place.
Alfons: Fufu, you may be right. Well then, take care, little robbin. I’ll be hoping for you to succeed.
Kate: Thank you for your kindness, Alfons. I’ll do my best!
I bowed to him and hurried off.
(Hm? But why does Alfons know that Harrison will be at a casino?)
(... Oh well, that doesn't really matter.)
Alfons narrowed his eyes as he watched Kate leave.
Alfons: Your “life” won’t be in danger. … But there will be “another” kind of danger.
Alfons: A spoonful of happening added to a boring day filled with pre-planned events.
Alfons: Fufu. Ah… how very delightful.
…
(— D-Darn it.)
I went into the casino in search of Harrison, and was approached by a man who appeared to be a gentry.
He said “young lady, you have to play a game if you come in here”.
I was forced to play…
Gentry: — You lost, young lady. How do you intend to pay for your losses?
Kate: U-Uhm…
(I don’t have that kind of money. That’s three times my monthly wage.)
Despite the elegant and defined nature of the people present, I knew that they weren’t kind enough to let me off the hook.
(What should I do…? How can I solve this problem?)
Feeling like I was at my wits end, I tightly clenched my skirt, and that was when…
Harrison: … Things have gotten interesting, haven't they?
(That voice. Could it be…)
Kate: … Harrison.
His milk tea coloured hair swaying, Harrison appeared and chuckled when he saw the game board.
Harrison: Hm… I see. You became their most ideal target.
Not too long ago, I had just boldly declared to Harrison that I was capable of protecting myself.
(I want to ask him for help. And yet, there's no reason for him to help me… at all.)
I lowered my gaze, realising that I couldn't turn the situation around, and the smell of peppermint grew stronger. Harrison leaned closer to me and put his lips to my ear.
Harrison: I’ll help you if you can repay me. How’s that?
Kate: … Repay you?
Harrison: Yeah. We can discuss the details later.
Harrison: I mean, you’ll have to pay someone either way, right?
I didn't know what Harrison would ask for as repayment.
(But since it’s him, I might be able to negotiate.)
(In that case…)
Kate: Harrison.
Harrison: Hm…?
Kate: I’ll repay you. Therefore…
Harrison: Therefore?
Kate: Please. … Help me.
Harrison: Good job. Your honesty is not bad.
Harrison: … You have a deal.
Harrison whispered into my ear and stood up with a smile.
Gentry: And who may you be? Don’t you think it’s rude to pop in all of a sudden without so much as a proper greeting?
Harrison: My apologies for failing to introduce myself. I’m this lady’s fiancé. … Isn't that right?
Kate: … Y-Yes. He’s right.
(You liar…!)
Harrison: She is the overprotected daughter of a high-ranking nobleman, who came here in hopes to get to know her future husband better.
Gentry: Oh? So you’re a noble’s daughter…
Harrison: Thank you for accommodating her on learning about society.
Gentry: My, are you trying to act as if she didn't lose a game?
Harrison: Of course not. It’s my duty as her fiancé to cover up her faults. Shall we go for another round?
The look in the gentry’s eyes resembled that of a snake eyeing its prey.
In England’s high society, there were “gentries” and “nobles”. The gentries were often envious of the nobles due to their titles.
Looking like he had been looking for a suitable target for mockery, the gentry invited Harrison to have a seat.
Gentry: Well then, what game shall we play?
Harrison: Anything.
Gentry: Anything, you say? In that case, how about a game of poker?
With a nod, the gentry signalled for the dealer to start dealing the playing cards.
Gentry: Now, how much money shall the wager be?
Harrison: You're right. Then let's have it at 20 times the amount my lady lost.
(20 times!?)
Kate: W-Wait!
(20 times the amount I lost… oh no, this is terrible. I can feel my head spinning.)
Gentry: Hahaha! It must be hard having such an assertive fiancé, Lady.
Harrison: My loss would be the best example to teach her about how society works. This is nothing but a small investment.
Gentry: Well then, shall we begin the game with a wager of 20 times the amount the lady lost?
Harrison, the gentry, ladies, and gentlemen surrounded the game board.
Words like bid, pass, call, raise, and drop were exchanged relentlessly. A few rounds later, no one else called for a raise—
Dealer: It appears that we have reached the end of the game. Will everyone please reveal the cards in your hand.
(The winner will be the player with the strongest cards remaining.)
Female Gentry: Full House.
(Full House is quite a strong set of cards, right? No way…)
Male Gentry: I have… Four Card.
Four out of five cards in that gentry’s hand were of the same value… it was nearly miraculous to witness.
Male Gentry: Now would you look at that, it looks like lady luck is smiling down at me. At this point, we can almost conclude that I am the winner—
Harrison: … Does seem that way.
(... No way. What should I do… I dragged Harrison into the mess I created…)
I bit my lip, overwhelmed by intense feelings of anxiety, and then… Harrison gave an aloof smile.
Harrison: The winner has already been decided since the start.
Harrison: Royal Straight Flush.
Dealer: The strongest hand of cards…?
In Harrison’s hand were cards of the same pattern, arranged in descending order.
Male Gentry: No… way…
Male Gentry: He’s definitely cheating…! Search that man!
Harrison: I don’t mind being searched, but in that case… please search everyone present as well.
Male Gentry: …!
Harrison: What? You don't see the need to search me anymore? Well then, that means I’ve won.
Harrison wrapped an arm around my waist and spoke,
Harrison: Let’s go.
Kate: O-Okay…
Harrison glanced at the defeated gentry and grinned.
— Like a lying fox.
Harrison: You lose the very moment you underestimate your opponent. A valuable lesson about society, isn’t it?
…
After we left the casino, Harrison walked in front of me like nothing had happened.
Kate: How did you get a Royal Straight Flush?
Harrison: The chances are 1 in 333, that means it’s possible I would never get it in my entire life.
Kate: So… tonight was a miracle?
Harrison: Who knows?
(... He’s dodging the question.)
(He doesn't seem willing to say any more about this.)
The only thing I understood was that the gentry and dealer had colluded from the beginning to cheat, and I was fooled through and through.
And so, I wanted to thank Harrison for seeing through their schemes and helping me.
Kate: Harrison.
Harrison: Yeah?
Kate: I would’ve been in great trouble if it weren't for you.
Kate: Thank you for helping me back there.
His milk tea coloured hair swayed gently in the night breeze.
Harrison: … Hey.
Harrison: Do you think it’s bad to tell lies?
Kate: Um…
Harrison stopped walking and looked at me with his mint eyes.
(When I was a child, I was often told that lying was a bad thing to do. But…)
Kate: I don't think it’s a completely bad thing. Sometimes people lie to protect others or to avoid getting hurt.
Kate: That’s why, before I condemn someone for lying, I want to understand why they lied…
Kate: I want to hear them out, listen to how they feel. … Although, I’m not sure if I can do that well.
Harrison: … You’re really this honest.
Kate: …?
Harrison: Nothing, I just thought it’s so typical of you to be this unguarded.
Harrison: But there are people who lie for no reason apart from personal gain.
Harrison: Those are the types of people who couldn't care less about hurting others, and people like you are the ones who will be easily crushed by them.
Harrison: Keep that in mind if you ever venture to such places just to look for me again.
Kate: You figured out why I was at the casino…
Harrison: You’re awfully easy to read. I’d be glad to meet someone who can’t read you.
He narrowed his eyes mischievously, like the usual Harrison.
(I thought I saw a hint of sorrow in his eyes for a split second.)
(Or was that just my imagination…?)
Harrison: — Anyway.
Harrison moved closer to me and peered into my face, as if he were seeing through everything in my heart.
Harrison: I kept my promise to help you and get you out of there.
Harrison: You’ll repay me for that, right…?
The next chapter! Featuring some new characters heehee (Don't worry, there will be more of them in the future!) I'm afraid that this chapter suffers from severe TWNFSTS (They Would Not Fucking Say That Syndrome), which I blame purely on the fact that I wanted my little Mr. Fernsby flustered and tworded a little. Is that a crime? But yeah, strangers irl don't act like this unfortunately, I just want everyone to adore my little scientist Anyways, I hope you all are enjoying these so far! They're very very fun to write. I just hope it's not too anachronistic.
Word Count: 2282 (holy crap i really let that get away from me huh) Reading Time: ~17.5 minutes Warnings: Mentions of alcohol, un-proofread ofc
I am most certainly now on the right track. I arrived in the little Welsh town two days ago, and immediately, the quaint charm of this place struck me. Really, calling it a town is a bit of a mischaracterization of the location. It is more of a village. Llandeilo, the village in question, is quite, quite picturesque. The streets are cobbled and flanked by brick buildings which show their age. There is not a library here, to my chagrin - this village’s proximity to Talley Abbey, I had hoped, would grant me access to more documents, some of which might have helped in my search. However, it does have a market square, a tavern, and a coffeehouse, each of which may have some inhabitant willing to share their knowledge on the subject.
Cousin Barnaby's guest house is very fitting for my needs! The brute of a man does not truly understand what I am studying, and in his defense, I don't truly know either. Still, the house he has lent me is small, but with a spacious interior. Cousin Barnaby is the high constable for the village, and the poor man does not find intellectual pursuits in the least fascinating. Nevertheless, he has provided me with ample food and firewood for my little cabin, and if there is anything else I require, he has made it known that he is more than happy to provide for my needs.
By that time, I still did not know what was causing the featherflakes, and I was determined, yesterday, to find out what they were, and if it were possible to become exposed to them again - purely for research purposes of course.
That morning, I had decided to first try my luck at the market square. There were merchants from all over, coming to and fro, shouting their wares. The air was filled with many smells - spices, fish, cheese, and various medicinal herbs (which I had perhaps tarried too long in perusing).
The sounds of the market square were far more foreign than the smells. There were words shouted in Welsh, English, French, Irish - all of which I knew, of course, yet the combination of them all had a powerful effect on me. I believe I even heard singing from far off. There were numerous stalls filled with bartering and haggling townsfolk and merchants eager to swindle. I had walked up to one such tradesman at an empty stall, whose curly blonde hair, broad shoulders, and gap-toothed smile made him… quite appealing to the eyes. He seemed young and spoke in a smooth tone.
I straightened my tie and walked up closer. “Good morning, my good sir!” I had said to him, smiling confidently as I rested my hands on his stall, trying to emulate with every fiber of my being that I knew what I was doing. I did not in the slightest know what I was doing.
The tradesman chuckled softly, and spoke with a silky voice that, I admit, had a significant effect on my heartstrings. “Why, what do I have here! A university boy, come to pay a visit to my stall~!” He rested his chin on his elbow and looked me in the eye, almost smugly. “What can I do for you, stranger~?”
The confident, almost flirtatious, tone with which the man spoke put me at once off guard. Despite my best efforts, a blush found its way onto my face, and I found I could not meet his eye without a giggle. My hands fidgeted with the edges of my coat. “W-well!” I had said, “I’ve come to study a p-particular phemonenon- phenomemom- phenomenon!”
The man chuckled and motioned for me to continue with his eyebrows.
“Ah-! You see, I had encountered what seemed to be- a storm of feathers last year at around this time, and I had read accounts that it may have been an event more common around here- I was wondering if-”
“Heh heh… a storm of feathers, huh~?”
His voice stopped me and I looked back up at him. He was smiling smugly, as if he had known something about me that I did not.
“No, sir! I mean- yes, sir!” I stood up at attention, trying to organize my frazzled mind. How was I failing to speak to this man so wholly?
Another alluring giggle escaped his lips. “Well, I don’t think I know much about feathers, and far less about storms of feathers. I’m a traveler, you see - I don’t stay in one place for long. Perhaps you,” he emphasized that word with a single finger-tap on the tip of my nose, “might find better information at a place where the locals reside, hm~? The tavern, perhaps?”
The blush on my cheeks grew hotter, I knew it for a fact without needing a looking-glass. I nodded, eagerly wanting to escape his eyesight to retain my dignity. “Yes, sir! Thank you very much, sir!” I turned my back and began walking quickly away, pushing past a few others who had stopped to watch the conversation.
I heard a few giggles from the tradesman. “Ohohoh, so formal~! Well, I shall see you again soon! I am in town all this week, dearest~!” At those words, a squeak escaped my lips and I broke into a run, wanting nothing more than to escape from the giggles of that quite handsome and flustering man.
I went to some other shopkeepers, but none of them could provide any more information. The market square was clearly a poor start to this investigation. I just hope that word doesn’t spread around town too much about my… disposition.
I had planned on traveling to the tavern next, with or without that merchant’s advice. As I arrived, the sun had arisen over its peak and began sinking into the afternoon.
The tavern was a small one, but it was crowded when I entered. The room was filled with people larger than myself, a scenario with which I was, by that time in my life, thoroughly familiar. There was an out-of-tune fiddle being played raucously in an adjacent room, and other such sounds of frivolity were abundant.
Walking up to the bar, I noticed that the only two inhabitants were a woman and the bartender himself. The woman had a rough look about her, clearly someone used to hard work, if her muscles showed anything. She had her dark brown hair in a bun over her head, and wore a dark leather overcoat. The bartender was cleaning a wine glass with a rag, smiling at a joke the woman must have just told. He had an easy smile and his suave tuxedo suggested he was brought up in more high-class society than this.
I walked up and sat down at the bar next to the woman, motioning for the bartender to come over. “A glass of sherry, if you’d please, my friend!” I smiled at him, nodding when he looked at me with an arched eyebrow.
The woman next to me chuckled and turned to me in her seat. “You new here? I think I would have remembered you if I’d seen you here before.”
The bartender brought me my glass and I set down a shilling for his troubles. He took it happily and put it in the pocket of his waistcoat, smoothing his pomaded black hair. “He certainly seems new. That sherry had been collecting dust.”
“Yes, well, you see, I have a particular quandary, and I was hoping one of you fine people could help!”
The two of them looked at each other, smiled with their eyes, then turned back to me. The woman said, “Why, we’d be happy to help!”
I happily took a sip of my drink, finding it very delicious to taste. “Oh, splendid! All right, it goes like this. Last year, I had an encounter with a flurry of feathers. They had blown in and covered the house I was living in. They were a nuisance, but they caught my interest and held it.”
The gentleman behind the counter hummed, tapping his fingers on the counter as he listened and nodded. The woman, however, seemed uninterested.
“So, you came here trying to find out more? You came all this way to find a bunch of feathers?” She grinned at me and did the same as the bartender, tapping her fingers on the counter.
Trying my best to ignore the finger-tapping and simply focus on the question, I said in reply, “Well, these were no ordinary feathers! They clumped up and invaded my home, and there was an uncountable supply of them!” My speech was stopped by a quick poke to my side. I squeaked and looked down, but saw nobody’s hand.
“Of feathers~?” That was the gentleman behind the bar, now sharing the smile the woman had. They looked at me like two hungry dogs would look at a lambchop. Their finger tapping had increased in speed.
At this point, my face was beginning to heat up again, and I nervously drank the rest of my glass to avoid thinking about it. “Yes, do you… know where I might find these?” I felt a quick poke to my side again and jumped, gripping onto the counter to keep from falling, but when I looked back, there wasn’t a hand there.
The woman smiled and put her hand on my shoulder. “Oh, I think I know where we may find some!”
I smiled eagerly at her, ignoring the hand on my shoulder giving a gentle squeeze. “Where? I’d be delighted to know!”
“Why, outside! There’s a tree right next to here. There’s a rook’s nest up there, it should have some feathers.” With that, she gave me a quick poke to my side, which, with a rather embarrassing yelp, sent me off my stool and onto the floor. I flew to my feet in a huff, looking at her indignantly to hide the blush that had reached my ears.
“Madam! Never before in my life-”
The bartender interrupted my sentence with a chuckle, ruffling my hair. “Why don’t you run along, university boy? …Or else we’ll have to keep you here a while longer~.” His eyes narrowed as his smile grew wider. His finger-tapping on the counter had reached an almost scribbling-speed, making my blush grow wider as I looked at the woman a final time, then fled out of the tavern.
The woman and bartender laughed, the woman bringing her mug to her lips. “What an adorable little morsel. Hope he’s not leaving town soon.”
The market square was unhelpful, as was the tavern, but I was determined not to give up. In a last-ditch effort, I walked over to the coffeehouse. It was evening by then, and I hoped, perhaps naively, that I could still find some information on the featherflakes.
The coffeehouse had a warm glow, and a piano was being softly played in a corner. The landlord was stoking the fire from his seat next to it. I walked in, but upon seeing that there weren’t many people there, I sighed, and was about to leave. Then, however, I spotted a figure slumped over in a booth. Their head face-down on the table seemed… familiar.
I approached and sat down next to them, tilting my head in curiosity. Finally, with a gentle tap on the shoulder, I mumbled, “Hullo?”
The figure shot up with a start, mumbling about Suffolk in delirium before looking at me, and her eyes adjusted in recognition. I gasped softly.
“Clara?” I whispered. Her face erupted into a happy smile and she threw her arms around my shoulders.
“EREN! How have you been, my dear, dear friend!”
With a squeak, I pushed on her shoulders as much as I could. “Uh-! Mr. Fernsby, if you please-!”
“Nonsense! You are and forever shall be my little Eren!”
I growled a little and heaved her off, straightening my coat. “Mr. Fernsby, Clara.”
My old university roommate smiled her easy smile and pinched my cheek. “Whatever you say, Eren~!”
“Why does nobody in this accursed town take me seriously! I am on an investigation!”
“I believe it may be because you’re one of the cutest people ever born?”
“No, do not be ridiculous, Clara.”
She giggled and leaned back in the booth. “You just caught me on my mid-evening nap!”
I hummed an affirmative. “Tell me, which one is that? The fifth nap of the day of the sixth?”
She giggled and winked. “The sixth! You have a good memory, Eren!”
“Mr. Fernsby. Now, you wouldn’t perhaps know of any feathers around here?”
Clara put a finger to her chin and thought. “Well, there are those feather things that look like snowflakes. You mean those?”
I jumped and turned, wide-eyed, and exclaimed, “Yes! Yes, those! What do you know of them?”
She sighed, smiling, and pressed me back down into the seat. “I’ve been researching them for a bit. I could tell you what I know, if you’d like?” She yawned and wrapped her arm around me, pulling me close to her. “On second thought, maybe tomorrow.”
“No, no you-” I tried to protest, but the soft lighting and music, along with that glass of sherry were having a profound effect on my mind. I yawned after she did, and I nestled close to her - for warmth, though, and nothing else. She told me afterward that I was “a good cuddler,” despite the fact that it absolutely was not cuddling.
I fell asleep next to her rather swiftly, unfortunately, leaving the conversation about the featherflakes for the following day. I must admit… it wasn’t the most unpleasant end to the day.
As a homecook of many years, I've experimented and did amateur research into the science of cooking and baking. Cooking/baking is full of chemical reactions that happen due to the order of ingredients and temperature of each step.
I feel like a mad scientist or a witch, but the important part is that I'm cackling wildly when a reaction goes as I expect, or even if it goes wrong!
A KEY component to this process that I had overlooked, I would even make a case that this is largely overlooked. It is under-advertised! It isn't hard to find, but you have to know what you're looking for.
Material of your cookware.
Why have I dedicated a lengthy post to this? It is because at my age of 29, I have found that not all non-stick is equal. My parents bought me a nice cookware set when I moved in with my then boyfriend (now husband🥰). It was Analon, so a brand that people recognize, known for quality, and marketed towards homecooks. It was a hard anodized nonstick set. Did I at 23 know what that meant? Absolutely not. Did I at 29 know what that meant? I KNOW NOW. If you do know, then you probably see where this is going.
If you're reading this and thinking "duh?? you deserve this??" then good for you! My post does not apply and I hope you educate the people in your life because after hours of forums on the internet, I feel sadly safe in the knowledge that I wasn't alone. So in case you're like me, let's go over what hard anodized is, what it does for your cooking, and how I fucked up.
"Anodizing is an electrochemical process that forms a layer of non-conductive anodic oxide on the surface of a non-ferrous (doesn't contain iron) metal especially aluminum. This process makes aluminum more durable, decorative, and corrosion resistant, informing its use for various finished parts across different manufacturing industries." -Wayken Manufacturing
What does this mean for cooking? From what my Google research tells me, this gives the aluminum a ceramic like finish to create the nonstick and nonscratch effect. Some will even go further and add a nonstick coating to the inside of the pan for extra durability (like mine did...) However, it also helps with the evenness of temperature and so that you're not using overly high heat when a bit of patience on medium heat will ensure less burned food and non-damaged cookware as you'll have more control over the temperature you're using. There's more to it and benefits as a cook, but I'm not a cooking blog and there are lots to read from if you're more interested.
Onto the point of this post: how I fucked up. Because I didn't know ANY of this, I followed rules for other nonstick that I've used. Which...were dishwasher safe. I'm horribly depressed. I need things to be an easy clean or I won't cook. I'll either starve or eat McDonald's dollar menu. As much as I love cooking/baking, finding joy in my hobbies is so hard on a good day. The thought of cleaning? Often enough to have me not bothering, but that's also a different post time. Because I'd say I could be a mental illness blog.
I digress.
To Analon's lasting credit, they held up in the dishwasher after years of abuse so so so well. Until the recent wash. When I finally noticed something was wrong. Now the nonstick coating on the inside? Perfectly 100% fine. The anodized coating on the outside? Is now a gray powder that comes off when touched. That I am HIGHLY allergic to, it seems. My poor hand still is recovering from the reaction. The burn was almost immediate and didn't spread beyond my fingers thank goodness. But apparently, the anodized coating is delicate. It does not like alkaline. What is mostly alkaline? Dishwashing detergents.
Parts of the aluminum and deep scratches are visible. I've ruined my set. "Not dishwasher safe" is on the website, down at the very very bottom. It was probably on the box, too. But I saw nonstick and that's what I was used to and knew so that's what I went with.
So now I warn you readers that have stuck with me this long, don't just trust keywords. Actively look up what your cookware is made out of. Understand the terms that you took for granted. Obsess over proper care and use of your sets. There are so many different materials to choose from and each brand has its own words and patents, it seems. This has been an expensive lesson in reading asterisks and fine prints and that cookware is not always an open the box and go deal.
Dishwashing also voids my warranty. Cooking at high heats would also void the warranty because the anodized coating is not built for high heats.
So yeah, recommend me some cookware sets😪
Throat Lozenges: Alleviating Sore Throats New Findings Offer Promising Relief
What are Throat Lozenges?
Cough drop are medicated candy-like tablets that are designed to provide quick relief to coughs or sore throats. They dissolve slowly in the mouth, allowing the ingredients to coat and soothe the throat. Key Ingredients in Throat Lozenges
Throat Lozenges generally contain one or more of the following active ingredients that work to relieve throat irritation : Anesthetics - Such as benzocaine or phenol aid in numbing throat pain. They work topically to reduce throat sensitivity. Anti-inflammatory Agents - Like menthol or eucalyptus oil work by reducing inflammation. They promote mucus drainage to clear congestion. Demulcents - Materials like honey or glycerin coat the throat lining. They protect it from further irritation when swallowing or coughing. Antibiotics - Lozenges containing tetracycline are occasionally prescribed for bacterial throat infections. They treat specific infections. How do Throat Lozenges Work?
When a throat lozenge dissolves in the mouth, its active ingredients are released. They coat and numb the throat, reducing discomfort. Specific ingredients may also reduce swelling or treat infections : - Anesthetics temporarily numb painful areas, blocking throat pain signals. - Anti-inflammatory agents decrease swelling in irritated throat tissues. This lessens pain. - Demulcents form a protective film over inflamed areas, shielding them from further irritation. - Antibiotics kill or limit bacterial growth if a strep throat is present. This resolves the underlying cause. The slow dissolving nature also allows the throat to be continuously coated for 30-60 minutes, enhancing relief during that period. Using Cough drop Effectively
For best results, cough drop should be used as per product instructions. Some general tips on their effective use include: - Allow the lozenge to dissolve slowly in the mouth, rather than chewing or swallowing it whole. This ensures maximum coating of the throat. - Suck on the lozenge for at least 15-20 minutes for the ingredients to take maximum effect before swallowing any remnants. - Use lozenges at the first signs of a sore throat, rather than waiting for severe pain. Early action provides prompt symptom relief. - Lozenges work best for recently developed throat irritations. See a doctor for persistent or worsening pain. - Drink plenty of fluids while using lozenges to keep the throat moist. Water is recommended over acidic juices. - Lozenges containing local anesthetics provide temporary pain relief. Seek medical help if symptoms persist beyond a few days. Popular Throat Lozenge Brands
Some globally recognized throat lozenge brands offering effective temporary relief include: - Halls: Known for its menthol and eucalyptus flavors, it soothes and fights germs. - Strepsils: Contains phenol as an active ingredient. It aims to relieve pain from streptococcal sore throats. - Thayers: A honey-based lozenge brand formulated to moisturize and protect the throat naturally. - Chloraseptic: Branded lozenges utilizing benzocaine as an oral anesthetic to numb throat pain. - Cough Drops: A variety of flavored cough drop and drops by Ricola and Fishermans Friend. - Biotene: Specialized lozenges and mouthwashes for dry mouth relief alongside sore throat symptoms. In Summary, cough drop are widely available over-the-counter at pharmacies. They offer a convenient, drug-free way to temporarily relieve common throat afflictions. Using them properly under medical guidance helps maximize symptom comfort.
28 - German christmas market - Crygi
only if you’re into that idea ofc, no pressure!
Ooooh i love reading Crygi, so let's give writing a shot! (and a Jasya mention bc well, I’m me) Also, I've never been to a German Christmas market before, so a lot of this comes from talking to friends and internet research.
"What are we doing in this neighborhood?" Gigi asked as she looked out the passenger side window. The street was lined with different decorations than where she and Crystal lived.
"I told you, you'll see what it is soon," Crystal said as she turned left at the stoplight.
Gigi tried to look closer at the pedestrians walking along the lit sidewalk, but none looked like they were giving her any clues about this surprise.
She thought she and her girlfriend would just go out to a nice dinner and then watch The Polar Express at home in their pajamas, but now she had no clue where Crystal was taking her.
"Here we are," Crystal said as she pulled into a line of cars that led into a paid parking lot. As she waited for the cars to pull forward, she fumbled in the dark car to look for her wallet.
Eventually, as Crystal paid the fee and they were allowed in, Gigi recognized they were at a park on the other side of the city. She watched some families and couples that were walking to the main entrance.
"I still have no idea why you brought me here," Gigi said as she got out of the car. She rebuttoned her crisp, white faux fur coat as the chilly air hit her.
"You don't see those lights?" Crystal pointed out as she reached into the backseat to get two pairs of gloves, passing one pair to the other.
As she pulled on the baby pink pair of gloves, Gigi looked in the direction the strangers were walking toward. In the short distance, there was a tunnel entrance made of small lights to the park.
"Are we looking at Christmas lights?" Gigi guessed as she and Crystal joined hands.
"Kinda?" Crystal said as they entered the mesmerizing light entrance. The lights were all bright white, and some even made patterns of detailed snowflakes along the sides.
As the couple reached the main section of the park, the walkways were surrounded by different stalls selling food and trinkets. The smell of sweet roasted nuts and balsam welcomed them as they joined the market crowd.
After window shopping and looking through the main row of stalls, the couple sipped Belgian hot chocolate as they sat close to the playground.
“How did you find this place?” Gigi asked as she warmed her hands on the hot paper cup.
Crystal took a long sip before speaking, “Daya told me about it when she and Jasmine came here last week. Jasmine’s uncle is one of the pierogi vendors and she said the market was worth the drive.”
“She was right, this place was worth the drive out here.” Gigi smiled before taking another sip.
“I’m surprised you haven’t even taken any pictures yet.” Crystal pointed out. Which was surprising to Gigi too, since she was the type who always wanted to capture the moment.
“Maybe later, but I don’t think my phone camera can do all the lights any justice.”
As the couple finished their drinks and continued shopping, the young families of the market slowly left. The night was growing older, and some stalls were starting to close for the night.
“I don’t think my bag can hold anything else,” Gigi said as they made their last round of the stalls. Her canvas tote bag barely holding onto her shoulder.
Crystal led her to the next row of stalls, missing the exit they were heading towards. “We just need to pick up one last thing.”
“What’s that?” Gigi asked as they stepped in front of a booth with displayed ornaments. Some wooden, some ceramic, and a few glass.
Crystal gave the booth attendant her name, and they dug through a box under the table. The person pulled out a small gift bag with tissue paper peeking out. She thanked the attendant before leading Gigi off to the side, away from the crowd.
“Open it.” She said as she passed the bag to Gigi. As she carefully peeled back the tissue paper, she found a ceramic ornament of three leaves of green ivy placed in a triangle. In cursive red writing, the top leaves said Crystal and Gigi, respectively, and the bottom had the current year.
“It’s beautiful, I love it.” Gigi smiled as she held the ornament by the red ribbon. “I thought we weren’t much of a traditions type of couple?” She asked with a playful smile.
“It wouldn’t hurt to have a couple of annual things to look forward to,” Crystal said as she gave a quick peck to Gigi’s cheek.
Gigi couldn’t wait to show her friends and close family the magic of this Christmas market. But for this year, it was just meant for them.
