Matoi, the Firetruck Warframe

My favorite thing about Matoi is that he isn't based on firemen he is specifically and explicitly based on A FIRETRUCK. This man IS A TRUCK. I have a feeling he'll be a big hit with those of you who are also into Transformers because he is a firetruck.

Health: 150 (450 at rank 30) Shields: 100 (300 at rank 30) Armor: 300 (450 at rank 30) Energy: 100 (150 at rank 30) Sprint Speed: 1.125

Passive: Whenever Matoi activates an ability he is purged of any and all status procs and becomes immune to status for the next 12 seconds. Allies receiving the beneficial effects of Matoi's abilities receive this benefit too. Additionally, while aboard a Railjack Matoi repairs hazards 50% faster with the Omni-tool and consumes 50% less Revolite on repairs.

Ability 1: Protective Charge, 25 energy. Matoi singles out the enemy or ally closest to his crosshairs within 25 meters and charges directly to them. All allies (including Matoi himself) within a 6 meter radius of the landing point will gain a temporary shield that absorbs damage with a base value of 1,200 plus Matoi's current armor value (including mods but not temporary armor from arcanes or warframe abilities) lasting for up to 12 seconds or until depleted. All enemies within a 7.5 meter radius take 750 impact damage with 100% status chance and are momentarily ragdolled, leaving them vulnerable to melee ground finisher attacks.

Ability 2: High Pressure Hose, toggled ability, drains 3 energy per second. Originally a firefighting tool, the hoses Matoi possesses can spray water at very high pressure. While active, Matoi creates a cylindrical area centered on his crosshairs with a 2 meter radius and a length of up to 45 meters. Enemies in the cylinder of effect will take 150 each of impact, puncture, and slash damage with 40% status chance per half-second while also being ragdolled and pulled along the cylinder before being shot from its end.

Ability 3: Thermo-Kinetic Foam, 50 energy. Matoi uses his hoses to spray out a big blanket of fast-expanding foam that absorbs oxygen and thermal energy. A tool originally used for firefighting, the Thermo-Kinetic Foam has unexpected benefits on the battlefield. When activated, Matoi sprays foam that covers a 12 meter, 90 degree cone in front of himself for 3 seconds, allowing him to cover a wide area by aiming and moving. The sprayed foam lasts for 8 seconds. Allies that stand within the generated foam gain 50% damage reduction, while enemies that stand in it suffer a 50% speed reduction while taking 200 cold damage per half-second with 15% status chance.

Ability 4: Heroism, 100 energy. Matoi projects an aura of protection around himself which extends to all allies within 60 meters, healing each of them for 10% of their max health & shields per second for 8 seconds. Heroism also prevents Matoi and his allies' health from going below 1 as long as it's active.

Subsumed ability: Protective Charge

Signature Weapons Bulkhead: Originally designed to be the next-generation omni-tool, the Bulkhead was miniaturized but the over-concentration of revolite made it become dangerous to Railjack crews. Matoi, the original tester of this tool, repurposed it as his signature secondary weapon. Secondary weapon with a held beam style trigger, firing behavior is similar to the Ignis flamethrower but with reduced range. Deals pure cold damage with high status chance without sacrificing crit. Low per-hit damage, but applies a stacking damage over time effect which deals rapidly escalating cold damage with high status chance. Large magazine for a secondary weapon without sacrificing reload speed at the cost of a comparatively low max ammo capacity. When wielded by Matoi this weapon gains +25% ammo efficiency. Breach & Clear: A fireman's axe and a thick shield used to break down doors to save civilians from burning buildings and Matoi's signature melee weapon. Sword & Shield type melee weapon, slow attack speed with high per-hit damage. Deals mostly slash & impact with very low puncture damage. High crit at the cost of low status. In Matoi's hands this weapon grants 100 bonus armor while drawn.

Closing Notes: The one part of Matoi's kit that I'm not totally happy with is the ult, it's just kind of boring. But it's a life-saving heal ability so it fits the motif.

Yes! And most of them are blatantly self-indulgent (don’t look too closely at Mike’s career path, I swear it’s not just me projecting), and I’m not even sorry. :) Let’s gooooo!

(Also, note: I took this in a very fluffy domestic direction, so sorry if anybody was really hoping for some NSFW HCs or wedding HCs or something like that - although I might be convinced to expand on that another time. ;) )

-As a young couple in their 20s they lived in a typical shitty apartment near where they went to college, but now as they’re getting more established and their careers are picking up, they’ve moved into something more similar to a townhouse / condominium in the city where they work. They don’t need an entire house, really, and besides, they’re usually not a huge fan of suburbia. If they did have a house, it would probably be one of those small-ish houses near the outskirts of the city - you know the type I mean. Lots of renovation expenses because it’s so old, but unique and cozy enough that it makes up for the hassle. I do tend to picture them in more of a townhouse/condo situation, though.

-Speaking of careers, they both got into something creative. Neither of them at all wanted to work in any type of office environment. Will fought tooth and nail to make a living with his art, which has made for some rough spots financially, but now that they’re getting through their 30s and into their 40s, it seems like it’s finally starting to even out and become more reliable as a source of income. He may do concept art for movie / TV / video game studios, he may do comic illustrations, he may do commissions, maybe a combination. 

-Mike, meanwhile, leaned into his passion for storytelling and his leadership skills - but I feel like Mike would wander in a couple different directions with that. Trying out this path, then this one - less of a cohesive, driven career path than Will’s, just trying things until he landed on something he really liked. Maybe he dabbled in computer engineering in college for a while (see: Mike’s nerdy mini-conversation with Bob about programming languages), decided that wasn’t quite for him, tried some creative writing classes, some film studies. Maybe he was a high school history or language arts teacher for a few years after college, what with his caring and nurturing instincts, his nerdiness, his leadership skills, his passion for stories (LotR, Star Wars, and D&D, anyone?), etc. But that probably wasn’t quite for him. Eventually, after having storytelling hobbies for most of his life, he starts integrating that into his career kind of on accident - and that’s when he hits on what he actually likes doing for a living. He consistently writes short stories on the side and submits them to magazines for publication. Maybe he uses something like commercial writing/directing as a stepping-stone, making heartfelt hit-you-in-the-feels and funny-memorable commercials for shitty instant coffee and cotton tee shirts, and that block on his resume is what gets him into The Business for real. From there it’s small-time TV  studios, sitting in a writers’ room hunched over cold coffee cups, chattering with a table full of other creatives about plot twists that will air on local stations. Or maybe he’s on set, wearing black jeans and a black tee that won’t reflect the light and mess up the shot, flipping through a clipboard of rumpled papers and hustling towards a fast-incoming deadline. Maybe he’s third-in-command on set, right-hand-man to the right-hand-man of the director. Continuity supervisor or art director. Or maybe he’s a practical effects guy, mixing up buckets of sludge or fake blood or figuring out a way to make a plastic-and-foam lobster puppet look alive. In any case, he’s doing something he really enjoys, and he’s steadily moving up in the ranks. Will swears he’s going to be directing blockbusters in Hollywood before they’re fifty; Mike always scoffs at that, laughing it off, but Will isn’t entirely joking.

-They have a medium-sized dog - something with a long snout and a long tail. Will counts himself as a dog person, but for a while there after the fall of ‘84, it was hard for either of them to be around big dogs without remembering the Demodogs. But it’s been decades, and somewhere in their late 30s (when they finally live somewhere with some form of backyard), they finally feel ready to get a puppy.

-Semi-regularly, they group-call the old Party and play D&D over the phone (much like The Adventure Zone). Sometimes one or both of them (Mike or Will) will be trying to do something else in the background at the same time - cooking dinner, working on a piece of art, etc. (Hey, they’re adults, they’re chronically short on time. Gotta multitask where they can.) This leads to occasional bouts of hilarity - like the time Mike almost knocked his entire laptop into a pot of spaghetti sauce because he was trying to DM and cook simultaneously. These over-the-phone D&D sessions are invariable merry and hilarious, cheering everyone up even after the worst of days. The Party is often spread out over the whole country - Mike and Will probably in one of the hubs of the storytelling industry (San Francisco or NYC), Dustin somewhere in the midwest doing scientific field work, Lucas still somewhere in or near Indiana, El and Max living in a new city every other year - but these phone calls bring them all together, and remind them of “simpler” times when they were kids in the Wheelers’ basement.

-Nancy is a highly successful journalist who travels a lot for her work, and whenever she and Mike / Will are in the same city, they make sure to meet up for coffee if not a day or two of old-times sibling shenanigans. Nancy has considered Will like a brother ever since they were teenagers, and that only strengthens as they grow older. But Mike, especially, reverts right back to a fifteen year old whenever his big sister is in town, throwing potato chips at her across the table and teasing her until she chases him with her soup spoon, and the whole time Will is just laughing with his face in his hands, pretending to be embarrassed but really just happy to see the two of them both happy.

-Similar situation with Jonathan. ^^^ He kept up his photography through the years, but like Mike, he’s wandered from career path to career path, just trying things out. (Whether he and Nancy are together depends on your own HCs, but be assured, whenever he’s in town he and Will are just as insufferable as Mike and Nancy.)

-It’s a long time before either (let alone both) of them feel ready to seriously consider kids. They both have a lot to work through after what they went through as kids themselves, and being a parent means being 100% there for someone else’s needs, often at the sacrifice of your own. Not to mention that with both of their creative-based careers, with not nearly as much financial stability as some of their peers, they’ve had some years where supporting just the two of them is a challenge. But eventually, they do get to the point where they start thinking about kids. I think they’d have at least one. Maybe they adopt, maybe they team up with El and Max (depending on how you HC the girls at that point) to do an in vitro deal, it depends.

-They visit Joyce and Hop (who are married) for Christmas. El and Max come home for the holidays, too. Joyce and Hop moved out of Hawkins together after all the kids moved away for college. Not too awfully far from Indiana, but far enough from Hawkins that they could leave the memories behind. Somewhere fairly rural, but not quite small-town. A large town or small-to-mid-size city, maybe, where they have a house with a big backyard and a big front yard and enough combined beds and couches to house all the “kids” over the holidays. 

-Ever since college, they go to Pride every year - most likely along with El and Max, if the four of them can arrange to meet up.

-Mike and Will still tease each other a lot and play-fight and they still tussle for the remote or the last fry, and they still have nerdy posters up in their living room, and they still trust each other more than anything else and they still geek out over their interests together and they still bicker and protect each other and love each other. So, really, not too much has changed since they were teenagers - they’re just in a better (read: much less homophobic) environment, working on their mental health, growing, healing from years-old traumas, doing what they love for a living (after decades of fighting tooth and nail to make it work), spending time with loved ones. Just living life. Taking new risks. Riding the ups and downs together.

The Murderess of the Grunewald (26): Preparing for War (2)

Notice: With this chapter, we return to the preparations Jamie makes for Claire's defense while she stays in the Women’s Detention Center in Berlin-Moabit, waiting for her trial. Chronologically this chapter follows directly after chapter 18.

Six months ago. The evening after Jamie’s fourth Attorney’s visit to Claire in prison.

“Tessa reminded Jamie that the next day at 10:30 am, the telephone conference with Prof. Dr. Nerz was scheduled and that she had reserved for him and David de Koning a table at the Ferenc’s for that evening. He had three hours left by that time. However, he should plan at least half an hour of driving time because the traffic news had predicted a traffic jam for the inner city. Just another visit of just another foreign head of state in Berlin. Nothing new. Jamie thanked her and sat down at his desk. He looked out of the large panoramic window towards the Great Star. Twilight had already set in and soon the illumination of the Victory Column would start. Anyone who knew the history of the monument knew that it was not just a monument of victory after a war. It was a constant reminder of the wrestling of this nation for its liberty and its unity. First in the Liberation Wars against Napoleon from 1813 - 1815, then in the Wars of Unification between 1864 - 1871. For Jamie, it was also a synonym for the resilience with which this country had fought for its reunification the 40 years after World War II. He loved the view from his office because there was something encouraging about the monument. And that encouragement he needed very much. Right now, when he had to prepare a ‘war’ - when it was necessary to ‘muster’ his weapons and his troops.”

        A few minutes after 6:00 pm, Jamie arrived at the "Ferenc's". He gave his name to the receptionist and said he had reserved a table. The waiter led him into the side room and up the stairs that led to the gallery, called the “Belle Etage”. When David de Koning saw him, he rose from the table and greeted him. The waiter took a step back. As Jamie and David sat down, then he pointed to the menus on the table and to the little button that was attached to the parapet of the gallery beside the table by which they could ring the waiter. Jamie thanked the man. Then he and de Koning exchanged a few words and delved into the menus. Jamie chose the South Tyrolean spinach dumplings with leek and white wine sauce and sparkling water.

        "No Wiener Schnitzel?" de Koning asked, frowning.

        "No, but if you like to ... you know, the bill is on me."

        The guest did not think twice. When the waiter returned, he ordered Lamb‘s lettuce with pumpkin seed oil as an appetizer, a Wiener Schnitzel (of course of the full-cream calf) with potato-cucumber salad as the main course and as a dessert Apricot dumplings in walnut butter with raspberry foam. He would have liked to have chosen a glass of wine from the top list of Austrian winemakers offered by Ferenc’s, but unfortunately, he had to drive home by car. So de Koning ordered table water.

        "Well, what's up, Jamie?" de Koning asked in a whisper as the waiter left.

        "The prosecution has ..." began Jamie in a normal volume.  

        "Psst! Jamie! Not so loud! "

        De Koning looked at him in dismay before carefully looking around in all directions.

        "What? Do you mean we are being monitored?" Fraser asked, slightly amused. Then he plucked at the tablecloth, picked it up and looked under the table.

        "Well, I don’t see any eavesdropping devices here. Do you?"

        "Jamie!"

        De Koning looked around carefully again.

        "Ah, maybe there's a bug here in the flower vase!"

        Jamie plucked the dried flower bouquet from the small white porcelain vase that stood on the table between him and de Koning.

        "Oh no! Also empty!"

        With a big grin, Fraser showed de Koning the empty vase.

        "No one there who wants to overhear us!"

        "Jamie!"

        "David! We are in Berlin-Mitte, not in Chicago or the Bronx! So, do you want to know something about the case or not?"

        De Koning looked a little frustrated, but then unpacked his little black notebook and nodded.

        "Why do you think I’m here?"

        "Because of the good and above all free food ..."

        Jamie grinned and earned another sour look from de Koning.

        "The prosecution has filed an indictment, my client is in custody. I doubt that the accusations will stand the test. Some of them are built on very, very shaky ground - but you will not write that!"

        "I'm not stupid, Fraser!"

        Instead of answering, Jamie looked meaningfully at the small white porcelain vase.

        David de Koning pretended that he did not understand the allusion.

        "Does your client deny the charge?"

        "100 percent. She is innocent, completely innocent and we will prove that."

        "But if she didn’t kill her husband, who did it? Her husband is dead and he was obviously murdered. He has hardly inflicted the numerous, severely bleeding wounds ion himself."

        "We don’t know who killed Professor Randall. But one thing is sure: it was not his widow."

        "But …."

        Before de Koning could ask another question, two waiters came and served the food. The journalist pocketed his notebook.

        The two men started to eat.

        "Ah, this Schnitzel is truly delicious. You don’t know what you're missing, Jamie."

        "Thanks, I'm very happy with the dumplings. I don’t like to eat heavy dishes in the evening."

        They teased each other back and forth about the food for some more minutes, then Jamie redirected the conversation back to the subject.

        "My client doesn’t know who did this to her deceased husband. She certainly had no reason for it."

        "Really? It is rumored that her husband had a girlfriend?"

        "Even if that had been so, wouldn’t it be more obvious that my client had killed this woman and not her husband?"

        "Well, there are voices that say, that the husband had a not inconsiderable fortune and perhaps, your client didn't want to miss such an inheritance?"

        "My client has her own assets. Her uncle was a very well known British archaeologist, and Egyptologist, who taught at Oxford for many years. She was his only heir. In no case was she ever dependent on her husband's money,”

        "Then maybe it was pure revenge? She just wanted to get rid of that old jerk?"

       "My client is a doctor. She has sworn an oath to save lives, to heal lives, not to take life."

       "Well, just because she is a doctor, even a surgeon, means nothing, but she would have the know-how ... You have certainly read newspaper reports in which she is credited with the act just because ..."

       "I can assure you that my client is not capable of such low emotions."

       "Uhhh, big words, Mr. Lawyer!" said de Koning. "One could think, you're married to the lady, or at least dating her!"

       Then he stuffed his last apricot dumpling in his mouth. He rubbed his stomach with relish and, addressing Jamie, said:

       "Who knows what other colleagues from the rest of the press are digging up ... Are you really sure that not someday something will come up from somewhere? Couldn’t somebody show up in court and get talking? Maybe a neighbor, a friend, a hotel clerk witnessed a fight or something else?"

       "Whoever should crawl out of whatever hole, to throw dirt on my innocent client, he or she must know that we will prosecute every slander, every false statement, and every incumbent claim under criminal and civil law."

       "You will claim for damages?"

       "Of course! My client is a graduate of irreproachable reputation. Every slanderer must know that slander is expensive. She's a respected surgeon, and if she loses her reputation or job because of such slander, someone will pay for it. You can count on it."

       "What does it mean that you will let those allegations persecute? Don't you do that yourself?"

       "No. In this case, we have appointed a distinguished lawyer whose law firm specializes in media law. I intend to concentrate entirely on the defense of my client. "

       "Surely I can write that?" asked de Koning, knowing what Jamie's answer would be.

       "Of course."

       Two waiters came, cleared the dishes and asked if they could bring anything else. Jamie ordered water for himself and de Koning and asked for the bill.

       "And what about the ... exclusive interview?" asked de Koning. He deliberately kept this question until the end. If Jamie had to tell him that his client would refuse, then at least this news would not spoil his meal.

       "What exclusive interview?" Jamie asked, frowning.

       "You know exactly what exclusive interview, you pettifogger!"

       "Oh, the ... exclusive interview with the magazine U-Turn ... Hmmm, let me think."

       "Fraser"

       De Koning pounded nervously on the table with his black notebook.

       "This is the decision of my client ...  she decided to do this interview, unfortunately ..."

       De Koning's eyes widened.

       "What has your client decided unfortunately?”

       "Unfortunately she has decided ... to give this completely new and unknown online magazine in Berlin ... this exclusive interview."

       "Yeah!"

       De Koning beamed and thumped his fist on the table.

       "David!" Jamie said in a whisper and pointed wide-eyed at the small white porcelain vase: "Pull yourself together! The Stasi officer who monitors us gets eardrum twitching! They will sue you for bodily harm and I have to bail you out again!"

       Both started laughing loudly and it was obvious that David de Koning's laughter was a liberating laugh.

       "How did you do that? How did you convince her?" the journalist asked.

       "That, my good friend, falls under the lawyer's duty of secrecy. But seriously. I will work out an agreement in the next few days that my client and you will sign. Then all’ is wrapped up. You know, I expect U-Turn to be neutral."

       De Koning nodded.

       "For sure. We will do that ... I promised you. Just ..."

       "Just?"

       "Jamie, don’t misunderstand me  ... you're pretty sure she's innocent, but who tells you that   there aren’t any skeletons in her closet, coming out someday?"

       "David, trust me, I know you have a reputation to lose, but I assure you - she is innocent, and I promise you that I will pay for anything if U-Turn suffers any financial harm because you help me."

       "It's ... it's not that I don’t trust you, Fraser. We've been working together for too long, but ... such a big thing ..."

       "We've never worked on such a big thing together before, I know, but that will not change anything, it will not be easy, we'll have some tough months ahead of us, but believe me, I'll do anything to make this whole thing a success - for my client, for me and you."

       "When do we meet to sign the agreement - and especially where?"

       "In a week? I call you. I'll call you as soon as I've finalized the agreement and discussed it with my client. "

       "But she will not ... but still, jump off?"

       "No,  no. That deal is sealed."

       "Ok, I trust you, Jamie."

       "And I trust you, David. You send me the first article as a pdf on my phone?"

       "Yeah, we'll release only if you agree."

       He nodded in agreement. They got up, went downstairs and Jamie paid the bill. They said goodbye at the entrance, then they went to their cars.

RECIPE: Brioche & Red Fruit Swirls with Ricotta Glaze (from Home Made Christmas by Yvette van Boven)

Makes 10 substantial rolls 

For the brioche swirls

¼  cup (60 ml) lukewarm milk

⅓ cup (60 g) granulated sugar

2¼ teaspoons (1 envelope) active dry yeast

2¾ cups (350 g) all-purpose flour, plus plenty for dusting

¼ teaspoon salt

3 eggs, beaten

9 tablespoons (125 g) butter, at room temperature, cubed

½ cup (100 g) light brown sugar

10½ ounces (300 g) frozen red fruit, preferably a mix

For the ricotta glaze

3 to 4 tablespoons ricotta

About 2 cups (200 g) sifted confectioners’ sugar

Prepare

In a bowl, beat the milk together with the granulated sugar and yeast and let stand for 7 minutes, until the mixture starts foaming. Combine the flour and salt in a large bowl. Form an indentation in the middle. Pour in the yeast mixture and the beaten eggs, then gently combine into a smooth dough. Remove from the bowl and knead for 5 minutes on a floured countertop until supple and soft. Add two cubes of butter and continue kneading until they are incorporated into the dough. Repeat until all the butter has been used and the dough has become shiny and elastic, dusting the countertop with flour as you work and using a bench knife or spatula to scrape up the dough as needed—it may take a while to incorporate all that butter, but be persistent. Place the ball in a greased bowl, cover with plastic wrap, and allow to rise for 90 minutes.

Again briefly knead the dough. Roll out on a lightly floured countertop into a 16 by 24-inch (40 by 60-cm) rectangle. Sprinkle with the brown sugar and frozen fruit. Now, roll up from a short side into a short, thick log. Wrap in plastic wrap. Place the roll in the freezer for 15 minutes to firm up, which will make slicing it easier later on.

Remove the plastic wrap. Using a sharp knife, cut the log into ten even slices. Place them on parchment paper–lined baking sheets, a little apart (they are still rising!). Cover loosely with plastic wrap and allow to continue rising for 30 minutes in a warm, draft-free spot. If you’d like to make these the evening before, let them rise overnight in the fridge on the baking sheets.

Make

Allow brioches that were stored in the fridge 30 to 45 minutes to reach room temperature before you proceed.

Meanwhile, preheat the oven to 350°F (180ºC).

Uncover the brioches and bake for 30 to 35 minutes, until golden brown. Let cool for a few minutes.

For the glaze, whisk the ricotta in a bowl and add confectioners’ sugar until you get a thick glaze with the consistency of whole milk yogurt. Drizzle over the buns. Let stand briefly to set the glaze, then serve warm or at room temperature.

Chapter One (I listened to a lot of 80s music while writing this . . . )

Killian really didn’t want to be here tonight. It may have been four months, but he still didn’t feel ready to move on after Milah broke his heart. But Liam said that turning into a hermit only continued to allow the woman power over him. And didn’t Killian hate being controlled? By anyone? That certainly got his attention.

But then they transitioned into Paul McCartney’s “Maybe I’m Amazed” – not a normal choice for this current top 40 college band – and it was as if the crowd parted and an ethereal light shone on the blonde across the room. He was pretty sure his jaw dropped like a total git. Luckily, her eyes were scanning the room, oblivious to his presence. Her hair fell in soft, wavy curls instead of the corkscrew perms all the other girls had. She was fresh-faced too, which he liked. Even Milah wore too much makeup in his opinion. Most women did. It was 1987, after all. But this girl was a classic beauty.

He rose from his seat and made his way towards her, feeling as if he were moving in slow motion. She still hadn’t turned her gaze in his direction. And then, from out of nowhere, Will and Jefferson had her surrounded. Will opened a glossy magazine and held the centerfold up to the blonde’s face, an eager, almost salacious grin upon his lips. The blonde wrinkled her button nose in disgust. It was only then Killian noticed the three children with her: two boys and a girl. She clapped her hands over the eyes of the little girl and the younger boy. The older one blushed bright crimson, his eyes widening in shock. The blonde snapped something in the boy’s direction, and he quickly averted his eyes.

Killian’s irritation reached a boiling point as he swiftly intercepted his friends, crumpling the Playboy magazine and shoving it in Will’s chest.

“What the bloody hell are you doing?” Killian hissed at his friend. Then he turned, flashing an apologetic smile at the young woman. Now that he was closer, he could see that freckles dusted that adorable nose and her eyes were a light green. They flashed fire right now, which only made her more appealing. “I apologize for my friends. They are a bit . . . uncivilized.”

The blonde was having none of it. “That’s an understatement. They just scarred these kids for life!”

“I know, and I truly want to make it up to you. What’s your name, lass?”

Emma threw another scowl over his shoulder towards Will. “It’s not Shalene.”

Will opened the magazine to the centerfold again, careful to keep it angled away from the kids. “You mean you’re not Miss October? But . . . “ he glanced from the centerfold to the young woman before him, and back again, “the resemblance . . . “

Killian tapped his forehead, “Think for a second, mate. What would a Playboy centerfold be doing at a frat party on a Friday night with a bunch of kids?”

Jefferson wrinkled his brow. “Well, bringing kids to a frat party threw me anyway, so . . .”

Killian peeked at the centerfold. The woman in the photograph was a green-eyed blonde, with the same elegant neck and creamy fair skin. She even had a dimple in her chin. But there was something lacking, some spark that Killian couldn’t have named if he tried. He shook his head, flashing what he hoped was a charming grin in the young woman’s direction.

“She doesn’t hold a candle to you.”

The blonde rolled her eyes, not exactly the reaction he’d been hoping for. “Yeah, and I’m sure you’ve used that line half a dozen times tonight. Is this some kind of scheme you three pull to pick up women? Cause let me clue you in, it’s tacky.”

Killian laughed, he couldn’t help it. Oh, she was feisty. “These two don’t have the brains for that kind of subterfuge.”

“Hey!” Jefferson barked.

“Come on, mate,” Will grumbled, “I told you it wasn’t her . . .”

His two friends sheepishly apologized, then quickly made their way to the bar for another beer. Killian shook his head at their retreating forms.

“They really aren’t bad guys,” he explained, “they just don’t always think before acting.” He extended his hand. “Killian Jones.”

The blonde arched her brow for a moment, then tentatively took his hand. “Emma Swan.”

Killian’s face filled up with a genuine smile. “Lovely name. And it suits you.” He exulted at the pink hue that warmed her appled cheeks. “I haven’t seen you around campus before. You must be a freshman.”

A sparkle lit her eyes as she shook her head.

“If you were a sophomore, how could I have missed you? Surely you’re not a junior.”

For the first time, a smile lit her face. “Actually, I’m a senior.”

His eyes widened. “A senior!”

She laughed, and the sound was enchanting. “In high school.”

He blinked and shook his head. “I can’t believe it,” he told her softly.

She looked indignant. “Hey!”

He shook his head. “No, I mean, I can’t believe the most beautiful girl at Boston College is a senior in high school.”

She pressed her lips together, as if forcing herself not to smile as a deeper blush stained her cheeks. She glanced away from his gaze. Then the moment was broken by the little blonde girl at her side. A sister perhaps?

“Emma,” she said, hopping up and down, “I really gotta go!”

“Oh my goodness, Robin, I’m sorry!” Emma gasped. Then she turned to Killian. “Where’s the bathroom? That’s the whole reason we came in here.”

Killian gestured for them to follow him across the living room and into the hallway on the other side. He pointed at the line reaching all the way to the far end of it. Emma groaned and little Robin hopped from one foot to the other in clear distress.

“I can’t hold it that long, Emma!” the child whined.

“No worries, lass,” Killian assured her, taking her hand and guiding the child towards the front of the line. He looked over his shoulder at Emma. “Just stay back, Swan. You’ll ruin my angle.” Then he winked as Emma rolled her eyes again.

He sauntered up to the front of the line, then turned to face the redhead standing in front of the bathroom door. He leaned casually against the wall behind him, still gripping Robin’s small hand. “Good evening, Ariel.”

“Killian!” she beamed. “I didn’t know you were here!” She noticed the little girl at his side, and her face softened. “Oh, and who is this?”

“My . . . cousin’s kid. I babysit sometimes.” Killian smoothly lied.

“Ohh!” Ariel gushed. “That is so sweet!”

Robin was a quick study. She smiled brightly, showing off an adorable gap in her teeth. Ariel bent down to her level.
