Pokémon FireRed: Flying Monotype (Post Run Review)
Version Played: GBA Rules: Only Pokémon that are Flying, part Flying or evolve into Flying types may be on the team at any given time. (Charmander OK, Scyther OK unless it evolves) No Legendary/Mythical Pokémon allowed. Goal: Elite Four (Any%)
Challenge Rating: ★✩✩✩✩ Fun Rating: ★★★★✩ Overview: Super simple without being completely free. Flying is a fun type with a lot of hybrids to keep some diversity. The lack of a Physcial/Special split kinda hurts, but that's old Pkmn for you! But this one was fun. A lot of mons made me surprised at how versatile some can be, casually! The team was as follows: Inferno?! (Charizard) Oberon (Butterfree) Manafa (Gyarados) Kweh ' v ' (Dodrio) Freyja (Scyther) Haruka (Dragonite) Final Thoughts/Recommendation: This is another on the list of good entry level challenge runs! I picked this one for its relative ease, since it was sandwiched between two other hard runs, at least in terms of intended scheduling. Truth be told, I wanted an easy time because I wanted a break between tougher runs. That said: Any monotype can be made easy or hard depending on the type used. Flying is relatively easy. Butterfree pulls a lot more weight than one might expect, and Dodrio is a beast in any capacity. Special attackers for my run were Charizard and Dragonair/Dragonite. Any other fliers might be viable, though. Not a lot in terms of walls, surprisingly. Just don't overlevel for Surge and remember that Brock doesn't actually have any Rock-type moves. (DISCLAIMER: Rare Candy cheat WAS used before the Elite Four to cut down on multiple hours' worth of grinding. This is justified to me, because I'm denying 'mons of extra EVs at the end of the game, and all I'm ultimately doing is cutting down on time spent grinding.)

Moth of the Week
Kentish Glory
Endromis versicolora
Tumblr media
The Kentish glory was first described in 1758 by Carl Linnaeus. It is a part of the family Endromidae which was created in 1810 by Ferdinand Ochsenheimer. This is a monotypic genus, meaning there is only one species in it being the Kentish glory.
Description The male and female of this species are clearly told apart by their colors and size.
Males are darker and more orange than females with feathery antennae
Males hindwings are orange
Females are paler/more washed out in color and larger to carry eggs
The forewings of this moth are a marbled black, orange, and white. The outer edge of the wing called the outer margin is brown with white stripes along the veins. The females hindwings are the same marbled black, brown, and white with a brown edge. The males hindwings are orange with brown markings.
The legs and antennae are black while the thorax is brown and white. The females abdomen is black while the males abdomen is a similar orange to the hindwing.
Sources differ on wingspan range.
Wikipedia: 50 - 70 mm (≈1.97 - 2.76 in)
Butterfly Conservation: Male 27 - 30 mm (≈1.06 - 1.18 in), Female 34 - 39 mm (≈1.34 - 1.54 in)
Diet and Habitat The larvae of this species eats mainly birch (Betula species) but will eat other trees and shrubs such as Alnus, Corylus, Tilia and Carpinus species. Adults do not feed.
This moth’s range used to be much larger, such as living in the southern and western English counties of Kent, Sussex, Berkshire, East Anglia, Herefordshire, and Worcestershire and the southeastern Welsh county of Monmouthsire.
Now this moth is restricted to living in the central and eastern Highlands of Scotland. It is seen in the Scottish counties of Perthshire, Inverness-shire, Morayshire, Aberdeenshire and Kincardineshire.
They prefer to inhabit open birch woodland and lightly wooded moorland.
Mating Females use pheromones to attract males, who can detect them from 1-2 km (≈0.62 - 1.24 mi) away.
This species has one single generation per year. The females lay their eggs, which are yellow at first then purplish-brown, in batches of 10-20 eggs on low birch scrub at an average height of 1.2m (≈1.31 yd). They prefer to let them on sheltered, unshaded saplings, usually the first few batches are near where the females emerged. The eggs hatch after 10 to 14 days.
Predators Males usually fly during the day from mid morning to early afternoon while females fly at dusk. Because of this males are presumably preyed on by daytime birds while females are preyed on by bats.
Fun Fact The females do not fly as strong as males due to the eggs they carry as it weighs them down. Females tend to lay their first few batches of eggs close to where they emerged due to this fact.

Thanks for coming to Discount QiJiu Week where I just put post cool AU ideas I want to see
Pokemon AU
Peak Lords are all Regional Gym Leaders. YQY and SQQ are a doubles gym bc SQQ absolutely refuses to do the work of making different teams to fight fewer badge trainers, so YQY does it for him lmao
(Aside: In the cartoon where you follow Red rather than Ash/Satoshi it shows that the Gym Leader's combat team changes based on how many badges the challenger already has)
SQQ is Grass Monotype and YQY is rock monotype.
YQY got SQQ an eevee as a companion pokemon he could evolve into a leafeon, but it evolved very quickly into a Sylveon SQQ is extremely protective of and gives spa days, jewelry, clothes, etc. YQY was an aspiring champion, but there was a terrible accident where he was badly injured (severely torn ACL, he can mostly walk okay but has a cane for bad days) and his shelgon got shards of an everstone embedded in its flesh
(Bagon-shelgon-salamence line is about a pokemon that wishes to fly and actually can in its final evolution, the everstone prevents ever evolving, ergo can never fly)

What type would each Pokemon villain be? Including Tera types.
Sure! I like playing Pokémon type tarot or whatever you want to call it. I guess Tera types could be like a hidden side, one that shows up in fewer situations, or one that is more variable.
Giovanni: Ground/Normal (Tera fighting)
In addition to it being his type specialty, ground is fitting with Giovanni in that he’s a grounded person. He has a plan B, C, and D, his organization is well-structured enough to go on without him for years, and while he has grand goals, he’s fine approaching them slowly and realistically. Normal is because his goal is pretty mundane compared to other villains and because of his persian and kangaskahn. And he’s shown to greatly value Pokémon battling and his abilities in it, thus the fighting Tera.
Maxie: Fire/Ground
It’s the type of primal groudon and his camerupt. Ground represents how his team is more organized than Team Aqua and his general preference for structure, and fire represents his emotionality and anger.
Archie: Water
It just seemed right for someone this obsessive to be a monotype. This one needs no explanation. It also fits him being cooler-headed and needing/wanting less structure than Maxie.
Cyrus: Flying/Dark (Tera electric)
Aside from flying and dark being his most-used types, flying represents that he’s ambitious to the point of being unrealistic and that he doesn’t see limits. Dark is for his selfishness and deceit. And electric is for his association with technology, rotom, and his crackling passion (Tera because he hides it).
Volo: Fairy/Ghost (Tera dragon)
It seemed right for Volo to be represented by the types most associated with myth, and both ghosts and fairies are associated with impishness. Dragon is the type of power and grand goals, and it’s his Tera type because he pretends to just be a quirky merchant while secretly being very strong and ambitious. Plus, dragon and ghost are the types of Giratina.
N: Grass/Dragon (Tera: fire or electric)
Grass is the type of calm, nurturing and kindness, as well as fragility. Dragon is the type of power, royalty and mysticism. Fire and electric can both represent passion, with fire being a more romanticizing passion (truth) and electric being a goal-driven one (ideals). Which N would have would depend on the version.
Ghetsis: Dark/Dragon
For his selfish, soulless, underhanded ambition and daring nature, there could be no other type but dark/dragon. It’s also the type of his ace. Dragon also suits his refined presentation.
Colress: Steel/Electric (Tera flying)
They’re the types associated with technology. Colress seems like he has a good balance between calm sturdiness and goal-driven passion. Flying is for his irresponsible ambition- he sees no limits, even when he absolutely should be seeing moral ones.
Lysandre: Fire/Flying (Tera dark)
Lysandre is a man with high ideals and a passion that could easily become very dangerous. Dark is for his deceitfulness and hatefulness, and it’s his Tera type because he hides it from the public.
Lusamine: Poison/Fairy
In contrast to the uncaring dark type, poison types often become harmful because of obsession and high, uncontrolled emotions. Fairy type represents her love of aesthetics and generally feminine personality.
Guzma: Bug/Fighting
In addition to being a bug specialist, Guzma prides himself on being a pest, unwilling to show respect for that which he doesn’t find respectable. He’s also highly aggressive, angry and destructive.
Rose: Steel (Tera poison)
Monotype because he’s obsessive, poison because he’s toxic and to associate him with Eternatus.
Piers: Dark/Normal
Aside from it being the type of his ace, I associate the normal type with an appreciation for the mundane, which fits with his goals of caring for his town and his sister.
Penny: Fairy/Electric (Tera fire)
Ngl, fairy is mostly because of sylveon, but it also represents her naughtiness and rebelliousness pretty well. Electric is because of her tech skills, and fire is because, though it’s understated, she’s clearly a very passionate person.
Kieran: Grass/Poison
Kieran is gentle, sweet and meek by nature, but he’s also highly emotional and has acted in some very toxic ways because of it and his obsessions with Ogerpon and strength.

Have you ever been to kalos? If so have you ever met any sky trainers?
I haven't been to Kalos unfortunately! The only other place I've been 'sides Sinnoh was Galar 'couple years ago to try the Gym Gauntlet there, and it was... An experience.
I've met many monotype trainers in my life tho, and I find Sky battles really interesting, if a bit... confusing? I'm not sure of what makes a 'mon qualified to participate in one 'sides the Flying type, but they're amazing to watch for sure!

@cinnabar-surfin //don't mind this being a direct copy paste from one of my posts//
Trivia for you;
A few glitch pokemon are dual-monotypes. For example, ♀, ▶ A and 4 h are both normal/normal typing, they react as normal, normal typed pokemon. In a similar vein, some glitch pokemon have types that don't even exist, the 'default' L shaped missingno, and it's sibling the defaulted L shaped 'm both are 'bird' types, a typing that does not exist but seem to be similar to flying.
Very interesting...
In the case of a normal/normal type, does it make it 4x weak to Fighting or is it still 2x?

“A bird team would have no counter to electric types” <- fools who didn’t factcheck
Archen line & altaria can both learn earthquake. I did not check any other ground type moves.
Give smeargle wings and you have a bird that can learn anything /j
Monotype teams are always fun to make :3 i once started an milcery/alcremie only run in SWSH and i stopped at the grass gym because it was painful.
almost every pokemon has a counter to at least one of its weaknesses. Theres only 20 pure electric type lines (counting all pikachus as one line, counting jolteon as one, and counting anyone who gains a second type when they evolve), so being able to target the OTHER weakness of an electric type is probably a boon to a flying type/bird team
Plus theres a number of non-flying type birds.
Sorry to pokemon infodump into your ask box when we are not mutuals or anything like that ;_; i just am a huge pokemon fan and i love monotype teams (i do not play competitive it scares me)
JHBSJFD NO NO DONTWORRY WE CAN PLAY AND FROLICK TOGETHER I PROMMYYYY
'a bird team has no counters to electric types' uhhh okaaaay. then whats this then. [chucks my staraptor at them at mach 5, exploding them instantly.] I Would Just Win. Have You Considered That. <33 JSHBFJHD
monotypes are so so much fun though, ive only managed a couple myself (<- chronic dropper of pkmn runs) but figuring out how t utilize every little bit of every pokemon is like. the most fun thing in the whole world dkfhbgdj.. i just think its fun to be Ride Or Die with ur buddies!!! shrimple as!!!!!
another really fun one would be like.. honeytree only.. itd take some shuffling for setup but like. can you imagine. . imight do that actually i love honeytrees.. WAH. ANYHOW
pkmn fan to pkmn fan communication 🤝🤝🤝 we

Flying Gurnard
The flying gurnard (Dactylopterus volitans), also known as the helmet gurnard, is a bottom-dwelling fish of tropical to warm temperate waters on both sides of the Atlantic Ocean. On the American side, it is found as far north as Massachusetts (exceptionally as far as Canada) and as far south as Argentina, including the Caribbean and Gulf of Mexico. On the European and African side, it ranges from the English Channel to Angola, including the Mediterranean. This is the only species in the monotypic genus Dactylopterus. Similar and related species from the genus Dactyloptena are found in the Indian and Pacific Oceans.
This fish is variable in coloration, being brownish or greenish with reddish or yellowish patches. When excited, the fish spreads its "wings", which are semi-transparent, with a phosphorescent bright blue coloration at their tips. The fish also has large eyes. It reaches up to 50 cm (20 in) in length and 1.8 kg (4.0 lb) in weight.

Moth of the Week
Chimney Sweeper
Odezia atrata
Tumblr media
The chimney sweeper is a part of the family Geometridae. It belongs to a monotypic genus, meaning it’s the only moth species in the genus Odezia, which was created in 1840 by Jean Baptiste Boisduval. It was first described in 1758 by Carl Linnaeus.
Description This moth is mostly black with white on the tips of the forewing (called the “apex”) and on the fringe of the forewing.
There have been a few variations in color:
- Odezia atrata pyrenaica, which is found in Pyrenees and central Italy, the wings are “dusted” in a brownish yellow with a stronger color on the forewing.
- Ab. Odezia atrata nigerrima, described by Paul Thierry-Mieg, was a female with no white apex or fringe.
- This moth’s wings may become brown from wear over time.
Wingspan Range: 23–27 mm (≈0.91 - 1.06 in)
Forewing Range: 12–15 mm (≈0.47 - 0.59 in)
Diet and Habitat The caterpillars of this species mainly eats the flowers and seeds of pignut (Conopodium majus).
This moth is distributed in the Palearctic region. In the west, it’s range reaches the Iberian Peninsula through western and central Europe and the British Isles. In the east, they can be found in Sakhalin and the Amur-Ussuri region. I’m the north, this moth reaches central Fennoscandia. Finally, in the south they are found in Italy to the Balkans.
These moths were once very common in Austria, but now the species is a rare occurrence.
They inhabit ditch edges, meadows, bogs, moors, lake sides, chalk downland, limestone grassland, woodland edges and hedgerows in southern Britain
Mating In Belgium and the Netherlands this moth can be seen flying from June to August. It presumably Nate’s during this timeframe.
Predators This moth flies during the day, especially in sunshine. They are presumably preyed on by birds and other daytime predators.
Fun Fact The chimney sweeper can be confused for the Small Blue butterfly (Cupido minimus), which also lives in the Palearctic region, as its wings may become brown from wear.

I lost the post about Gotham having Pokemon starters and —
I don't go here, I know the bare minimum shit you need to know about Pokemon, but let me tell you what I do know about starters:
They're all three stage evolutions
They're all local to their region and can be captured later on in game/show
They are either water, grass or fire types
I assume they're all monotypes in their first stage but I could be wrong.
They are not rare or uncommon for their region
So if we pick starters they have to be reflective of all of New Jersey, not just Gotham. Preferably, even, all of the New England area, to give us a proper range for a region and greater variation of Pokemon species.
Various birds, bats, fish and insects with our most common typing being ground, plant, water, flying and poison types. This is just the ones coming to mind immediately, not mentioning larger mammals and reptiles in the area.
That said, I think it would be hard to find a fire type that isn't a product of the city environment. Chemical spills, repeated bombings, radiation poisoning and even just the presence of weapons and items have shown to influence the entire existence of a pokemon family.
...
Stuff to play around with while I get business done today, I guess.

Yaaaah! I finally finished one! And because it is my birthday, you will be nice and listen. Like a lot of older Pokemon players, I've found sometimes an extra challenge is in order. Nuzlocke runs are pretty fun, but being honest after a few I learned the real key is patience and so they don't have the same panache. One has eluded me, the Monotype run. Pretty self-explanatory. I couldn't dream of any other type but my beloved Grass buddies. I've tried a few different games but it ends up grinding me out and I lose interest, because this one is a lot harder. So I solved that by trying a game in the series I hadn't actually played yet. Black 2.
Going in largely blind made this one a real test. But it was a game surprisingly conducive to a Grass-only run. You could get a lot early. The test in these compared to a Nuzlocke is you really have to understand the intricacies of the type. Even in Gen 1 where you have limited options, you can't just depend on supereffective shots and having all the best attack moves. You really want to try and diversify, lean into gimmicks and craft a flexible strategy that can handle hurdles.
You can see the final HoF team up above, what ended up making BW2 a good Gen for this was having a lot of options. By the end I had a second team of Grass-Types I could have made. So let's walk through the gang:
Udon the Serperior was my rock, and I knew that'd be the case going in. I've used mostly Grass starters and this big beautiful snek is my favorite. It's like a physical Milotic and that's just so perfect, not a lot of type coverage but Leaf Blade rips through so much backed by the golden combo of status moves in Leech Seed/Coil. That plus Leftovers ensured a strong baseline, and I got a kick out of some of the shenanigans I could pull by rounding it out with Dragon Tail.
Chuggz the Ferrothorn was a project, and one I couldn't have done without the investment. I lagged in the tricky midgame around Skyla the hard flying-type gym largely because I needed to keep the Exp Share on him. But once he hit 40 and evolved he started to dominate. Neutralizing that big poison weakness was crucial to dealing with Team Plasma and so many fights were won off of the classic Iron Barbs/Rocky Helmet combo. Toxic & Ingrain just let this bastard sit there and take abuse, Iron Head and ultimately Thunderbolt also gave me some nice coverage options.
Cabbage the Whimsicott was a great all-around addition. I got one early thanks to the rustling grass feature and while I was initially bummed to not get Prankster as the ability Infiltrator ended up being more important. Because this guy was the big coverage all-star. Kept Leech Seed because it was tanky and sometimes I needed him to set it for Serperior, but moves like Hurricane, Psychic, and Shadow Ball ensured the cotton ball stuck around.
Bongo the Simisage came online late, but ended up being necessary. His speed and moves like Acrobatics and Rock Slide did a lot. But he was such a glass cannon he couldn't do much more than fill in a couple of niche roles. Usually Serperior was just so much of a better physical attacker. What I love about these runs though is how they finally give me an opportunity to use all the other grass types a normal playthrough makes redundant.
Bara the Roserade was one that disappointed me for how long I've thought of trying one. It hit hard as a special attacker, harder than Whimsicott...but Whimsicott could take a hit and was a lot faster. Roserade felt like it'd crumple to even neutral type moves. It did find a great niche though for some specific hurdles. Weather Ball. Thought Sunny Day would be a bigger deal initially, but Rain Dance for troublesome fire moves ended up being the real deal. Also had some fun keeping Toxic Spikes so Serperior could juggle.
Chopper the Sawsbuck...I regret giving him such a cool name. This is one I was excited about trying the run in Unova. I love Stantler in GSC, thought Sawsbuck would be the same. No. He sucked ass. Like, black hole. I couldn't do anything because you'd crumple if another Pokemon sneezed at you, and the one thing I loved in Jump Kick? You kept missing those when we needed them. The only thing he did for the whole E4 run was give me a safe switch and an Aromatherapy setting up Rain Dance for Shantaul's Chandelure.
I also had a Leavanny (Leo) that did work early on. But the strategy worked pretty well. Toxic Spikes and try to check anything in the way of either Serperior or Ferrothorn setting up then grinding opponents out. Surprisingly didn't use status effects much for an all-grass team. Once I got Toxic of course it became a staple but that's late. Leech Seed was crucial though.
Cheren wasn't much trouble but Roxie was such a high wall early. Poison plus needing to get past her for the best options. Burgh was surprisingly easy for an unfavorable matchup, that's where the Leavanny got to shine and Whimsicott made his debut. Elesa's Emogla got a little scary but grass resisting electric helps, Clay got flattened. Skyla's birds might have been too much if they came before I really rounded out the team. Even moreso with Drayden coming right as I finally had Ferrothorn as an option. Then of course Marlon had no chance being a late-game water gym.

For exactly absolutely no reason at all. zero. none. ....
I'm going to poll yall on what kind of Monotype team each of HMS would have. I am leaving out the ones I think are least likely because the choice limit is 12. Put other if I left out the one you'd think he is
