Rule number one. You should never trust a man. If you let them between your legs or in your heart, you are done for.
Grandmother Y/L/N was right. Men don’t deserve your attention, love or to feel the warmth of your pussy.
Especially when said man is a cheating cunt. The kind of man who fucks you straight into the mattress only to give a red-haired bitch sunflowers later.
“Sergeant Barnes asked if you changed your mind,” Maria watched your reaction. She's not interested in getting involved in your relationship drama with Bucky but worried about the upcoming missions. “You worked well together in the past. Like a well-oiled machine.”
“That’s in the past,” you huffed. “I thought you were on my side in this. What changed? Did the man-baby ask his buddy Captain America to help him get what he wants?”
“This has nothing to do with Captain Rogers. Sergeant Barnes seemed to be desperate about your sudden change of behavior,” she pointed out. “Is it possible that he’s not cheating on you? Maybe he’s just…dull.”
“Dull?” You cocked a brow. “James Buchanan Barnes may be many things, but he’s not dull!”
“Y/N, believe me. Men can be unbelievably dull when it comes to recognizing feelings.”
“We never talked about feelings, Maria. This is not the problem here. It’s that he had sex with me and gave that woman something he never gave me. Flowers. And he dared to give her my smile.”
Maria dipped her head to watch Dolores walk past you. You didn’t even recognize the red-haired devil, but Maria did. She saw the glint in Dot’s eyes and the smug grin on her lips when she glanced at you for a moment.
“I think, you should talk to Barnes. I know from experience, that men sometimes can’t distinguish a lonely woman from a lying wench.”
You wrinkle your forehead and consider her words. No. Even if he didn’t have anything going on with Dolores, he still gave her flowers. Who knows what else he did with her behind your back?
“I don’t get it Steve,” Bucky threw his hands up. “I thought everything was going in the right direction. We talked for hours and had fun together. She loved my bike and going on a ride. The sex was mind-blowing. Y/N and I just clicked.”
“Did you go on dates with her?” Steve questioned, raising a brow. “Did you tell anyone about your relationship? Because I know for sure you didn’t tell me about it.”
Bucky huffed, beyond frustrated. “We wanted to keep it a secret. Y/N never said that we wanted to tell anyone. I waited for her to tell me she was ready.”
“Buck, you told me that you had sex with Y/N that morning,” Steve shrugged at his friend’s angry expression. “And then you go and give Dolores, a woman you barely know, flowers.”
“ONE FLOWER! STEVE!” Bucky yelled and rammed his metal fist into the wall. “It was one flower. If only Y/N had stayed a little longer and not played hide and seek, I would’ve given her the rest of the sunflowers.”
“Why didn’t you give them to her first, Buck? Why give the flower to Dot first?” Steve yelled back. He barely raises his voice, but Bucky turns a blind eye to Dot’s foul play for too long.
“I bought the flowers for Y/N, Steve. I was on my way to her apartment, and then Dolores started to cry. I tried to soothe her, punk. I faked a smile, handed her the sunflower, and walked away.”
“If that’s the truth, go and explain things to Y/N instead of moping like an angry child. I love you like a brother, but if I must watch you pout for one more second I’ll punch your face.”
Bucky wrinkles his nose. “Uh-I don’t know how to start. I didn’t even know Y/N was mad at me. I’m so…” The brunette shrugged. "Confused."
“Buck, you’re not a confused puppy. Go,” Steve pushed Bucky toward your room, “and get your woman back. Oh, maybe you should offer more than a pout to her…” But not flowers. This would only make her mad.

16/09/2023-Pennington
Flora and fauna photos taken in this set are of: 1. A neat and alluring Ruff we enjoyed watching wade in fishtail lagoon, a bird I love and we were lucky to get brilliant views of it. 2 and 10. A lovely Lapwing which we enjoyed closely nearby the Ruff, delightful to see its reflection. 3. Stunning Curlew Sandpipers. I was amazed to see seven of these prepossessing, distinctive and charming waders in the corner of fishtail lagoon, my Mum spotted eight. Some of these elegant birds had a nice rusty brown front. This is a bird we always feel extremely lucky if we can just see one of once in a year, in some previous years like this one we've seen them multiple times at coastal sites but we'd never seen so many at once before. This was sensational, a big moment in my autumn migration and birding year. 4. A nice Roe Deer we and some nice people we got chatting to enjoyed seeing. 5. Some of my first sea aster of the year, a very pretty flower and a key one here at this time of year. 6. Ringed Plover behind a Black-headed Gull on fishtail lagoon, it was good to see decent numbers of these today. 7. One of a few nice young Shelducks we saw. 8. Soapwort, a unique flower I like seeing here. 9. Blackberries.
It was brilliant to be back here seeing a great amount of birds, waders and ducks really shining today. Other highlights included many Dunlins, Little Stint, Knot, Redshank, Curlew, Oystercatcher, a fair few Black-tailed Godwits, beautiful Teal and Shoveler and Eiders offshore. Little Egret, Grey Heron, Great Crested Grebes, Redshank, Great Black-backed Gull, Starling, Whitethroat, Linnet, Pied Wagtail and Meadow Pipit were other avian highlights. I also enjoyed seeing butterflies Comma, Peacock and Small Heath well and Migrant Hawker the dragonfly of the moment for me. It was good to see bee on bramble flower, mossy rose gall, creeping thistle, creeping cinquefoil, musk mallow, possibly spurry, wild carrot, dock, gorse covered in a spider's web I'm seeing these well of late, rose hips and hawthorn.

#1 hobby these days is just going on an evening walk through the neighborhood and using Seek to id any flowers or bugs i see :3
Common Soapwort Saponaria officinalis is nonnative but can be used to make soap!! Wild Four O’Clock Mirabilis nyctaginea is native and a host to at least four species of micromoths’ caterpillars.
Butterfly Milkweed Asclepias tuberosa is native and attracts butterflies and other pollinators including this common eastern bumble bee Bombus impatiens ! and this last guy is the Eastern Calligrapher Toxomerus geminatus, which is a native species of flower fly. they exhibit batesian mimicry with the yellow and black stripes but are harmless to humans; their larvae prey on pests like aphids.

Coming back to this but specifically talking about Cordelia's hair: if you're like me and you're borderline obsessed with this girl because even when you're not giving her attention in fanfics and posts you're thinking about her all the time like she's some ever-present ghost of every narrative I write/talk about that relates to TSC, then you probably remember that in the earliest works mentioning Cordelia, she was described to have "henna'd hair" before CC did that thing where she went "I need to remember she's also a mixed child and that not every Persian has the same genetic traits" and gave her naturally red hair as far as TLH and CC's own statements seem to indicate.
However, (and @faithfromanewperspective I'm tagging you in this, and @thevagabondexpress as well, because you wanted to stay updated on my herbalism research) given Cordelia's own interest in herbalism aaand... excuse me while I flip through this damn book and type about it... oh nice, the page fell open exactly where I wanted to be (maybe movies aren't totally unrealistic).
Anyway, henna is a plant that "the Greeks once used... as a shampoo, which they created by pounding its leaves together with the juice of soapwort" (Emma Kay who cites from Due Libri di Cucina), and its flowers were traditionally used in India to repel moths. Additionally, there's a superstition "that when the flowers are in bloom, both snakes and men converge around women".
So, as I was saying: given Cordelia's herbal knowledge (and interest in perfumes too while we're on the topic of herbs), and that the Persian Empire once lay between Greece and India, it would not be a stretch that she would use henna as a shampoo and that this shampoo would subsequently colour her hair (not always red as far as my research says but it all depends on what you get -- the point is that it'll hide greying hair at the very least).
BUT MY POINT IS: that connection brings back her herbalist roots (...puns unintended, sorry) in CC's earliest version of Cordelia and who we see in Chain of Gold since she recognises the poisonous plant the mer-whatsit-Fair-Folk spiked the drinks of Hypatia, Anna, and Matthew with, AND (okay, I know this one is stretching it) the superstition about snakes relates to Lilith AND AND the way she draws in men like a charm.
Should this have been its own post?? Maybe. Hush. But I still headcanon that Cordelia uses henna shampoo, whether or not that colours her hair dark hues, thank you and goodnight (it is 3 PM. It is not night.).
The art is lovely and now I'm gonna ramble because that's what I do when I care about something.
For the love of women, please PLEASE can fan artists remember to add muscle to their Shadowhunter ladies? I'll commend Bowater for cleverly giving James that sculpted and lean look without making him a beefcake (nothing against beefcakes, I'd love to hug them), but Cordelia is once again suffering from Arms And Shoulders Too Slender It's Hard To Even Imagine Her Picking Up A Sword. There is some there, yes, but artists shouldn't be afraid of giving particularly Female Main Characters weight and toned muscle. Cordelia is supposed to be nearly the same height as James as far as I can remember, and she's curvy, and full, and she wields a sword like it's second nature to her. Please explain why she looks so tiny in James' lap.
Also I'm pretty sure marriage runes are supposed to go over the heart whenever possible (thinking about Will's parabatai rune being over his heart instead -- he didn't get Tessa to draw over the scar, did he??) and... either I'm looking at the picture wrong or James' rune is not over where his heart should be.
For the matter, where are their other runes and scars?? James' Voyance rune isn't even on his hand. And I'm pretty sure he's right handed. I could have that wrong though.
Another thing: no one can ever decide what Cordelia's hair looks like and it's the funniest thing to me. This is what happens when all you do is vaguely say the colour is like fire but also like rose petals but also a flowing river of those things but also is Red (probably for redhead, but then from there I never understand where the rose petal analogy comes from considering the typical rose is a deep bloody colour -- I do acknowledge the existence of those light orange varieties though which might more closely resemble red hair). In the end, I'm glad readers can infer what they want and imagine the characters how they like.
Anyone else think James looks like he's built like a tennis player? Oddly specific, maybe, but it was a thought I had. Mostly the arms and somewhat narrow body.
James' hair is nice, his eyes are an interesting take on gold in the shadows. Bowater managed to also make him look closely related to his father, so bravo for that.
In the end, the focus is obviously on the marriage runes and not other physical aspects outside of it being clear that this is James and Cordelia. Bowater's style is very beautiful and elegant. Love the way fabric and lighting is done too. I'll add also that it is possible to be a smaller person who is slender but still strong so I mean Cordelia's not necessarily done wrong, I just interpret her appearance differently. Obviously, they're both hot and they're both attractive and I have my qualms with the series, chronicles, and author -- the fandom I am so-so on, though I'm still here, aren't I? And I'm taking the time to ramble about my thoughts on a piece of fanart -- but this is good. Gorgeous, even. Both James and Cordelia are beautiful.
#cordelia carstairs#unhinged rants#old fixation on tlh please meet my newer fixation on herbalism because I'm exploring paganism and its history#the last hours#+ earlier works where cordelia was mentioned but never seen#it might not seem like I think about her much but I do#when I think of james I am still thinking of her#they are forever intertwined to me

A Guide To Growing Soapweed Yuccas
A Guide To Growing Soapweed Yuccas
[ad_1]
What is soapwort Yucca? This distinctive member of the Agave family is an attractive, perennial plant with gray-green, dagger-shaped leaves that grow from a central rosette. During the summer, strong stems with creamy, cup-shaped flowers protrude 1 to 3 feet (1 m) above the plant. It is not difficult to grow soapwort yuccas as long as you provide the right growing conditions. Let's learn…

Bouncing Bet – A Soapy Herb
By Maryann Readal
How can a gardener resist an herb with the name bouncing Bet? I could not resist this delicate pink and floppy plant after seeing it blooming in the summer heat in my friend’s garden. After hearing the name, I was curious about the story behind its title. For as you know, many herbs have interesting stories to tell.
Bouncing Bet, Saponaria officinalis, sometimes called soapwort, latherwort, and lady’s wash bowl earned some of these names because of the saponins in the roots and leaves of the plant. Since the Middle Ages, the leaves and roots have been boiled in water to make a soapy lather that is good for washing and bleaching delicate fabrics. Research studies show that soapwort was used in the making of the Shroud of Turin. It is true that museums have used the soapy solution of soapwort to clean tapestries and other artifacts. In France and England, where textile shops stood, patches of soapwort could be found because the herb was used in the textile industry for cleaning purposes. The French name for it was herbe à foulon or Fuller’s Herb, a fuller being someone who works with cloth. In the early 1900’s it was referred to as old lady’s pinks referring to its tenacity and ability to withstand harsh conditions.
Friars brought the seeds to England from Europe, where they planted them near their monasteries and used soapwort to keep themselves clean. The English colonists brought the seeds to the New World and used the lather of the plant to restore a sheen to pewter, china, glass, and old lace.
As sometimes happens, a good thing becomes too good as bouncing Bet escaped the garden and became invasive in some parts of the United States and southern Canada, spreading into fields where cattle and horses grazed. The saponin in the plant is not kind to the digestive systems of some grazing animals. However, it does not seem to affect the deer that consistently consume it in my yard.
Because of the saponins it contains, soapwort’s roots and leaves are potentially toxic and should not be taken internally. However, beer brewers have used it to put a head on a mug of beer and it is used in the Middle Eastern tahini and the candy, halvah. Historically, soapwort has been used to treat rheumatism, coughs, and itchy skin conditions.
Soapwort is a perennial in the carnation family that grows in zones 3-9. It likes well-drained, alkaline soil, tolerates drought conditions, and likes sun to partial shade. It blooms in shades of white to pink single or double flower masses on a single stem. Bloom time is from spring to fall and it makes a nice ground cover. Despite the deer, I can’t resist trying to get it to spread in my more acidic soil. I love the flowers and love its rose-like smell.

Bucky was pacing back and forth. He looked at the flowers at the flower shop, and stopped in his tracks, only to shake his head. “These are all wrong,” he sighed deeply and turned back around to leave the shop. “I need something special.”
“Do you know her favorite flower?” Steve looked around the flower shop, wondering if red roses were the right choice. “Buck, are you sure buying more flowers is a good idea? Maybe she’ll believe you only try to give her flowers because you gave one to Dot.”
“It was one flower, Steve,” the brunette super-soldier was just done. “I got that it looked like more than a friendly gesture to Y/N. But please, stop getting on my nerves.” Bucky harrumphed and walked toward the orchids. “She’s got a lot of these…”
“Hmm…pretty plant but it should be something more…personal,” the blonde pointed out. “Be romantic. Show Y/N she’s more to you than a fling you like to bang in the broom closet.”
“I never,” Bucky growled and raised his metal index finger at Steve, “once had sex in a broom closet with Y/N. She’s a lady.”
“May I help you, Sirs?” the clerk asked, clearly irritated by the fact that two super-soldiers walked around the small flower shop to find the perfect gift for someone. “What is the occasion?”
“He,” Steve pointed at his friend, “messed up epically. Now we are looking for the perfect flower to say: I was an idiot, please forgive me and take my pathetic ass back.”
Bucky threw his friend an angry look. “Do you have something making her forgive me?” he asked instead of punching Steve’s face. “I need the biggest bouquet you can make me.”
“If you want my advice, Sir,” she stepped closer to pat Bucky’s shoulder, “choose a single flower and tell her how you feel. Apologize and promise to never do whatever you did again.”
“See, that’s good advice,” Bucky muttered. He wrinkled his nose and tried to remember which flower you liked. Steve and the clerk watched him close his eyes. He sighed deeply and snapped his eyes back open. “I know which one! She has some of them pressed in a book…”
“Doll, please open the door,” Bucky knocked at your door again. For over an hour, he tried to make you talk to him. “I know you are angry at me, and that you hate me right now.”
“What do you want Barnes,” you ripped the door open and glared at Bucky. While looking him up and down, your eyes landed on the single daisy he held in his gloved hand.
“I came to apologize and to tell you that you got it wrong,” he shook his head. “No, that’s wrong. I meant that it looked like I wanted more than cheering a new colleague up. I swear on my sister’s grave that I’d never touch that woman. I only want you, doll. You know that in your heart.”
You hummed and looked at him again. He looked tired and desperate. “A daisy,” you glanced at the single flower. “You remembered.”
“Yeah,” he nodded eagerly. “You told me about that art class you and your friend took together. She made a bookmark for you, using a pressed flower you picked when you were a kid.”
“You really listened to what I said,” you wrapped your hand around his wrist, tugging at it. “Fine, come in.”
“You made her one too,” he said while following you inside your apartment.
“Buck, please stop talking about other people,” you closed the door and walked toward the living room. “You wanted to talk, so talk.”
“Doll,” Bucky carefully handed you the daisy, “I’m so sorry. I bought the sunflowers for you because they looked like you. Bright, beautiful, and kinda sweet.”
You huffed and crossed your arms over your chest. “And how did one of them end up in Dolores's hands?”
“She said that everyone forgot her birthday. I know how it feels to be new on the team and an outcast. Doll, I swear all I wanted was to make her feel welcome. Baby, I’m so sorry that I hurt you with my good intentions.”
“Prove it,” you pursed your lips. “If you bought more than one sunflower, how did you pay?”
“I used the credit card Stark gave me,” he sniffed and stuffed his hands in his pockets. “You can ask him to check on all the stuff I bought.”
“Dolores's birthday is in four months,” you puckered your lips. “She tricked you."
“I didn’t know that Y/N,” he watched you step closer to grab his hand and guide him toward the couch. “Please believe me.”
“You smiled at her.”
He sighed. Again. “Baby,” he flashed you a sexy smirk, “all my smiles are only for you. I smiled at her, but it was a fake smile.”
“Really?” You pushed him onto the couch to crawl into his lap. “I will find out the truth if you lie to me, Bucky.”
“I’d never lie to you, Y/N,” he whispered when you cupped his face with both hands. “I wanted to show you my feelings that day. I bought flowers and prepared a perfect day but then you avoided me.”
“We should talk more about feelings. This happened because we never defined our relationship.”
“Y/N, I love you.”
“I love you too…”

13/08/2023-Shipton Bellinger and home
Photos taken in this set are of: 1. The White-point moth, another lovely moth to see at home this morning. 2. Common crimson-and-gold moth at Shipton Bellinger, an eyecatching species to see joining in a great surge in moth sightings for me especially this weekend. 3. Wall Brown, it was an honour to get to see these vibrant and energetic butterflies so well again after seeing our first of the year here two weeks ago. Today was one of our best ever days for seeing them with a fair few seen and top quality intimate views of them with wings open and closed they were widespread around here. It's funny to think I was worried as to if we'd see one this year after missing them at the coast where we often see them, this place is certainly a gem it's been a revelation for them, we first came here for Brown Hairstreak but Wall Brown is an important one here too. Unusually for Wall Brown I got great close up chances for photos today and it's a novelty seeing a species I mostly have at the coast inland, so even though this is one of the first butterflies I (retrospectively from a photo) ever identified early in butterfly days there feels something pleasingly fresh about seeing them here. 4. A Brown Hairstreak it was an honour to see again today, I spent some glee filled moments with this astonishing and angelic butterfly, what an honour to see them. I hadn't seen one of these until 2021 so there is a great freshness with these for me too and I feel very lucky to have had two visits here seeing these beautiful butterflies this year. 5, 7 and 8. Views at Shipton Bellinger. 6. One of a few bees I enjoyed caked in pollen on the bold woolly thistle flowers. 9. Some hawthorn berries on a tree. 10. Wild parsnip one I enjoyed a lot today, with interesting flies on.
At Shipton Bellinger it was also good to see Holly and Common Blue, Gatekeepers, Small Heath, Green-veined White, Speckled Wood, Peacock, ermine moth I believe Spindle ermine, ladybird, Common Red Soldier beetle, prominent mossy rose galls which I'm enjoying appearing of late, beautiful Roesel's bush cricket and my first ever Lesser Hornet hoverfly which is gorgeous. Magpie, Carrion Crow, Woodpigeon, Great Tit and Blue Tit were nice to see too, with Collared Dove which I took a picture of somewhat photobombed by a flying House Sparrow which was interesting, Goldfinch including young and seen well and intimately in the garden whilst I had my hair cut there Starlings seeing House Sparrows in the buddleia then also home bird highlights today. My first Morning-glory Plume moth of the year was also nice to see at home with four-leaved pink sorrel and other flowers enjoyed in the garden. Other highlights of the many flowers enjoyed at Shipton Bellinger were my first soapwort and goldenrod of the year, some more mugwort this week, viper's-bugloss, eyebright, red bartsia, rosebay willowherb, centaury, common toadflax, loads of wild basil again, knapweed, scabious, herb-Robert, hedgerow crane's-bill and melilot. Another brilliant wild weekend.

“I don’t get it Steve,” Bucky threw his hands up. “I thought everything was going in the right direction. We talked for hours and had fun together. She loved my bike and going on a ride. The sex was mind-blowing. Y/N and I just clicked.”
