The antisemitism you don't hear about it terrifying.
I was talking to my coworkers and we were all joking about being on a list somewhere for some government, and one if my coworkers mentioned that he used to live with people who were on a list.
They were neo nazis, he didn't know that until he moved in and saw all their books like mein kampft. He couldn't leave until a year as he would have to pay a huge lease breaking fee, so he kinda just chilled by himself.
One day he was at home and one of the neo nazis he lived with got a call, was calm during it and hung up and called a flat meeting. The neo nazi said something a long the lines of "the government is watching us and knows our plans. Here is what we now need to do in case anyone comes knocking".
The intelligence agency had called him to question him. That's what the phone call was about. And apparently, they don't always call you, they can learn your schedule and follow you and just tap you on your shoulder and tell you to come with them.
So now my coworker is panicking, he has no clue what they were planning, is actually normal about jews (I vouch for him) and isn't a neo nazi. He doesn't want to get caught up in this. His lease was up in like 2 months so he moved out early and pays double rent till the lease is up.
He did find out what the plan was before he moved out. They were planning to attack a synagogue.
If it wasn't for this conversation, I would have never known this. Most jews where I live, who attend synagogue would have never known this. Thank fuck they got too scared to go through with it.

Hi! Random question, but how do anthologies work? Do you have to have friends who ask you to be part of theirs? Should I tell my agent I'm interested if she hears about any, or is that not how it works? And then also, when does the publisher get involved? Does someone come up with the idea and pitch it, then add authors after the deal or is it written with specific authors on board before? Thanks!
You can certainly tell your agent you are interested in being part of an anthology if they hear about something appropriate -- it doesn't happen THAT often, but sometimes, particularly if it is somebody AT OUR AGENCY who is putting it together, the agent for that project might say "Hey, we are brainstorming lists of possible contributors to this thing -- does anyone have a trans or nonbinary YA author that loves Horses?" or whatever. We're happy to throw your name in the ring if something like that comes up. But usually authors (or their agents) are approached directly by the Anthology Editor (more on that below) - either because the Antho Editor knows them, or knows OF them/their work, and it seems to be an appropriate fit for whatever the age and theme of that particular Antho is.
It's more about what you write and if you are a fit, and especially if you at least have something of a "name" and are likely to bring readers to the book, than if you are friends with the editor. In other words, if it's an anthology about Nonbinary Teen Horse Aficianados, they are going to be looking for people who NB and into horses and good at writing / known for YA books, whether or not they know them personally. If you are a cis man best known for writing picture books about dolphins, you probably aren't getting tapped for that anthology, even if the editor is your BFF.
As for how it works -- well, you HAVE to know I'm gonna say "it depends", right??? LOL.
An Anthology could happen in other ways, but GENERALLY SPEAKING, an author has an idea for an anthology that they want to be in charge of. That person is called the Editor of the anthology -- though there will also be an Editor at the publisher, of course, the Editor of the anthology is in charge of corralling all the authors, getting them paid in whatever way they are being paid, making sure that the stories pass the vibe check, etc etc.
They'll decide what the theme will look like, what kinds of stories will be included, etc, and think of a dream list of contributors. The ones they know personally or have a connection to, they might pitch the idea to, just to see if those people might be interested enough for them to put their names down as being on board (though they might wait until it is actually sold to reach out to EVERYone, it's just nice to have some commitments prior to pitching it!)
They'll make an Anthology Proposal, complete with list of tentative contributors. They/their agent pitches the anthology proposal to editors/publishers who might be interested in such a thing. Hopefully, one of them wants to pay for it. When/if that happens, the list of contributors will be finalized, etc etc.
There are different ways that the Anthology Editor and Contributors might be paid, but in pretty much every event, it's the Anthology Editor who is the contracted party with the publisher, and it is their responsibility to get contributor agreements to all the authors involved, chase the authors, distribute payments, etc. (It's a lot of work that seems quite terrible to ME, but hey, some authors seem to love it.)
Sometimes the Editor is paid a larger percentage -- say, 50% -- and the rest of the advance and royalties are split pro rata amongst the contribs -- sometimes everyone is given some kind of flat fee -- sometimes it's a charity thing and the authors just get a token amount or nothing and the proceeds go to the charity -- and I'm sure there are other ways it might be dealt with, too, those are just the ones I've seen.
