fun fact: Tales of Calmford Town started out as a horror project based on a dream i had back in 2021 about a mime wearing red gingham clothes trying to escape an abandoned house (he didn't make it in the dream, the creepy man that was the owner of the house ate him in one bite)

When I woke up, I drew the mime in my sketchbook and named him Flanelle, and then I thought: he looks lonely and sad, he needs a friend! And I made Dots (or Goroshek); I wanted her to be the mime's opposite: a girl to his boy, blue polkadot to his red gingham, and peppy energetic personality to his quiet and sad one.

They look SOOOOO DIFFERENT from what i draw now!

as you can see, modern Dots got a tan and Flanelle became a bit happier and grew his hair out

this was an old piece with neighbors i originally created for them in 2021 (gears isn't here yet)

But then, I stumbled upon a game called Chibi-robo!! and realized: THIS is the direction I want to take Calmford in! So I remembered the old cartoons I used to watch as a kid and old books mom read to me and then I read myself when i learned how to read.

I scrapped the horror idea and decided to make a silly and whimsical story instead. This is where a lot of new characters come in: Gears, since every town of this kind must have a resident mechanic genius; doctor Pellet, since every town needs at least one doctor, Nova, since Pellet needs a friend, etc.

The main inspiration were Adventures of Dunno (Приключения Незнайки), both the book and the stop motion series, the Merry Pictures magazine, Kikoriki (or Смешарики), Chibi-robo!!, Little robots, and, of course, the Adventures of Pencil and Screwbolt. I wanted to capture the whimsical atmosphere of old books and cartoons about a fantasy town filled with oddball characters, and I think I succeeded at it!
