My sons Ford Focus. We spent the morning calling and driving around trying to find the "water outlet assembly". The rubber gasket had broken somehow. No one had locally it except NAPA (#napaknowhow). What a pain getting to it and putting it back in (insert the usual "what were the #%*?! engineers thinking" diatribe). Okay, this is interesting

As they say in Australia, if you want to go into the jungle, you take a Land Rover but if you want to come back out, you take a Toyota Land Cruiser.

Why a Land Cruiser, you ask? Well, for one thing, these soldiers just don’t give up: they keep going and going for decades, gathering hundreds of thousands of miles under their belt without a blip. They require very little maintenance and can roll with any sort of terrain. They aren’t defeated by rough trails or unfavourable weather. Oil leaks are almost unheard of, the aircon works smoothly in all conditions, and on the whole the parts are built to last. And on top of everything else, their super torquey engines, whether petrol or diesel, can withstand time and wear&tear unlike anything else on the roads. That’s what we call bulletproof reliability. Yeah, the LC will probably not win any awards for outstanding aesthetics but honestly, with this sort of dependability, who cares about looks?

Finding a used LC to buy is not easy, because people tend to keep and use their trusted models for decades instead of reselling. So our customer was very lucky to have found this secondhand LC Prado with a history of 150k km. That sounds like an exorbitant distance for most cars, but it’s really nothing for an LC. We did some suspension replacement for the car, but it was honestly overkill because the existing suspension could easily have lasted another 50k km. The client just wanted to start his LC story with a new suspension.

So yeah, even though it means better business for us in the repair industry when you guys choose to buy used German cars, we will still advice you to snap up an LC or a Prado if you find a used one.
