How much should it cost to be a writer?
It depends what route youâre taking. If you are planning to go for traditional publishing, which looks like you finishing a manuscript and then querying agents who will then take your book to publishers, you should be paying for basically nothing. One exception would be if you decide to hire an editor to get a pass over your manuscript and/or query package before sending it off, but this is not required.
If you are in the process of trying to get your manuscript traditionally published, you may be approached by a âpublisherâ offering to publish your manuscript for a fee. THIS IS A SCAM! An author should never be paying for âpublishing services.â Anyone asking you to pay for your own printing, marketing, etc. costs is taking advantage of you. These are called vanity publishers and they will not turn you a profit, help you attract readers, or provide you the prestige of being published.Â
Always check on Writer Beware - search for the name of the person or company. You can also just google that name along with the word âscamâ or âreviews.â In general, donât let yourself be blinded by dreams, or let yourself be convinced that something is a good idea because you really want it to be true. Never, ever, ever pay a publisher.
If you are going the self-publishing route, you will be paying for certain things, but none of those should be payment to be published. You are the publisher. Uploading your manuscript to Amazon or other marketplaces is free. However, you will be paying for things that a publisher typically pays for. This could include:
-Cover art - you could do this yourself, though this isn't recommended. A good cover is key to a book's success, so budget to purchase a pre-made book cover, or hire a professional cover artist.
To find pre-made book covers, you can just Google "premade book covers," or check one of these sites: BookCoverZone RockingBookCovers Beetiful
And here's a list of places to buy both custom and pre-made cover designs that's a good start. You can also check Reedsy and Etsy for people listing cover design services. If there is a self-pubbed author whose covers you love, try asking them what artist they use.
-Formatting - you could do this yourself using a formatting program like Atticus, or you could hire someone who does professional e-book formatting.
Here's an article on the turbo-DIY route. Here's a list of formatting programs you can use. To hire someone, you can simply search for book formatting services or look at places where people list such services for hire, like Reedsy, Fiverr, or certain Reddit boards.
-Ad campaigns - you may want to pay for ad campaigns on platforms like Meta or Amazon. More niche, author-specific platforms like BookBub, Book Funnel, or Book Sirens also come with certain costs.Â
-Author services - you may wish to hire an expert in things like marketing, blurb copy, social media metrics, newsletter management, etc. You can find information on that here.
Be aware that scam publishers might try to pitch themselves as "author services" - you should be paying someone to help you with specific aspects of your self publishing work, NOT paying to be published.
-Software and platforms - whether it's a subscription to Duotrope, a paid Scribophile account, access to pro Canva features, etc. you may decide to pay for tools that you will use to do your work well.
-Expert advice - some people offer courses, books, or other resources on how to do specific things like write a compelling blurb or run an effective ad campaign. You may notice that a lot of the links I shared here will include upsells from people doing exactly this!
Be very cautious about this, as most of these people claim that they make tons of money on their self published books, but really, they make their money selling this stuff to people like you. Always check out a personâs free resources first, and wait to invest in this sort of thing until you have a specific question you need answered or are trying to do a very particular thing that you need granular guidance on.Â
One thing you should NOT pay for is a review, feature, or interview. Self-published authors will be approached by a lot of scammers who claim that, for a nominal fee, they will share information about your book to their huge audiences. These are completely useless and a waste of money. Never spend money on this.
Always keep track of what you are spending on all of this. You may be able to deduct it from taxes you pay on your income from writing, and you will want to really understand what your profit margins look like.

Hello, I'm trying to do some research on the visual novel community to better understand the needs of indie game developers in this niche. Any response helps. Thank you for your time!
(Shameless plug under the cut.)
===SHAMELESS PLUG===
If you are looking for a contractor to help you with the technical aspects of your visual novel, you can now hire me on Fiverr. I would also be interested in working with some guinea pigs game designers and/or writers for a significantly discounted rate (or even free, depending on the project) to help gain some initial traction - just click on the link and choose the "Contact Me" option.
=========END========
With that out of the way... In all seriousness, I'm curious what the market actually is for people who want to make visual novels but don't want to write the code. From experience, I know it's pretty common to hire artists, and it also seems fairly common to hire music producers and even writers for a bigger budget project. But I rarely hear about people hiring developers.
Of course, visual novel engines like Ren'py are pretty easy for anyone to pick up the basics, and I'm sure there are some no-code options out there as well. So, I do think it's plausible that most people, even non-developers, just do it themselves - in which case, I suppose there's not much of a market for my services.

Im seriously thinking about giving the private lessons. Like I'm actually trying to figure out how to go about it. Like where i could advertise myself, what times I could do it and what would the price be and all,,, it's a bit stressful but I rly want to try. Taking the steps towards it while i feel brave đđ
Ok so look,
Step 1: research!
You need to go through
1) websites specifically focused on private lessons. Here we have a couple of those that work as a kind of middle man between student/teacher, and you'd normally be able to find at least some of those by searching something like "[subject] tutor [area]";
2) websites that offer various services such as the Fiverr copycats, and look up teachers/private lessons on there until you find the wording that works for what you're looking for.
(these are both country specific so I'm afraid I'm not really able to offer much advice where to look for them!)
Then you'll be looking at:
a) the prices teachers in your area usually offer;
b) their age and years of experience;
c) if they offer online or in-person lessons;
d) what times they offer classes at (also good to see what times the school classes end generally and add an hour or two for commute);
e) ages they're willing to work with;
f) how they market themselves,
And how all of these correspond with each other. Studying these will give you a rough idea of where your own prices should land corresponding to what you are able to offer, and knack some of that off a little because you're new.
Step 2: get yourself out there!
You can either pick option one or two for where you want to put your own offer or both, but be prepared to manage your own schedule a lot. Pick a nice photo, put all your achievements in the sphere you want to teach, including exam results, put "experience" there, including helping friends with homework or whatever, anything. Namedrop fancy techniques if your know any. Put your phone number and contact information and the price range you think is appropriate (if in-person, account from commute - for them if it's at your place and you if it's at theirs).
If you want to, you may also print the ads and put them on notice boards in appropriate places (school bus stops is a huge one here), but I don't know how well those work!
(Pro-tip: working with teens aged 13 to 16 is usually easier. They've got the adult sense of humor at this point and are fun to communicate with but also know why they're going to get lessons and have their own goals, mostly. Kids younger than that can be fun but it's a little exhausting to corral them to work and you might need a set of specific skills you do not have yet.)
Step 3: research again!
While or even before you get any response, research into the official school/uni programs on the level you plan to teach. You should generally have an idea of where the student should be before they tell you anything about themselves just based on age, if you're offering tutoring with a school subject.
This seems like a lot and kind of is a lot, but if you can take on even just one-two students at a time and work with them well, you'll probably get a nice review or a reference or two and a lot of experience. It seems generally scarier than it really is, you just need to start.
Also hit me up if you mean to teach English specifically because I have more specific advice for that too đ

HOW TO MAKE MONEY WHILE TRAVELLING THE WORLD
HOW TO MAKE MONEY WHILE TRAVELLING THE WORLD
1) Freelance Work
The gig economy has made it easier than ever to find freelance jobs that can be done remotely from anywhere with an internet connection. Consider offering services like writing, virtual assisting, coding, graphic design, or consulting in your area of expertise.
Traveling the world and making money at the same time sounds like a dream, right? Thanks to the internet, this dream is now more achievable than ever. One of the best ways to fund your travels is by doing freelance work. Letâs dive into how you can get started and what kind of jobs you might want to consider.
Getting Started with Freelancing
First things first, you need to figure out what skills you have that you can offer as a service. Are you good at writing, designing, or coding? Maybe youâre great at organizing things and can work as a virtual assistant. Once you know your strengths, you can start looking for freelance jobs that match your skills.
There are many websites where you can find freelance gigs. Some of the popular ones include Upwork, Freelancer, and Fiverr. These platforms connect freelancers with clients looking for specific services. Creating a profile on these sites is usually free, but itâs important to make your profile stand out. Use a professional photo, write a clear and engaging description of your skills, and showcase your best work in your portfolio.
Types of Freelance Work
Here are some common types of freelance work that you can do while traveling:
Writing: If you have a knack for words, there are many opportunities for freelance writers. You can write blog posts, articles, website content, and even eBooks. Clients pay well for quality writing, and all you need is your laptop and some creativity.
Virtual Assisting: As a virtual assistant, you can help businesses with tasks like email management, scheduling, social media management, and customer service. Itâs a great way to use your organizational skills while traveling.
Coding and Web Development: If you know how to code, there are plenty of freelance jobs in web development, app development, and software programming. These jobs often pay well and can be done from anywhere.
Graphic Design: Designers are always in demand. Whether itâs creating logos, website designs, or marketing materials, if you have an eye for design and the right software, you can make a good living as a freelance graphic designer.
Consulting: If youâre an expert in a particular field, consider offering consulting services. Businesses are willing to pay for expert advice in areas like marketing, business strategy, and technology.
Finding Clients and Getting Paid
Finding clients might take some time, especially if youâre just starting out. Start by reaching out to your network and letting people know youâre available for freelance work. You can also join online communities and forums related to your field. Building relationships and getting referrals is a great way to find clients.
When it comes to getting paid, make sure you agree on the terms before starting any work. Use contracts to outline the scope of the project, deadlines, and payment details. Most freelance platforms have secure payment systems, but if youâre working directly with clients, tools like PayPal and TransferWise can help you get paid quickly and safely.
Balancing Work and Travel
One of the biggest challenges of being a digital nomad is finding the right balance between work and travel. Itâs important to set a schedule that allows you to meet your work deadlines while still enjoying your travel experiences. Find quiet and comfortable places to work, like co-working spaces or cafes with good Wi-Fi. And donât forget to take breaks and explore the places youâre visiting â after all, thatâs why youâre traveling!
Conclusion
Freelancing is a fantastic way to make money while traveling the world. With the right skills and a bit of effort, you can find freelance work that fits your lifestyle and allows you to enjoy the freedom of being a digital nomad. So pack your bags, grab your laptop, and start your adventure â the world is waiting for you!
2) Teach English OnlineÂ
If youâre a native English speaker, you already have a valuable skill that many people around the world want to learn. Teaching English online can be a flexible and rewarding job that fits perfectly with a travel lifestyle. Hereâs how you can get started:
Choose a Platform: There are several companies that hire remote English teachers. Some of the most popular ones include VIPKID, DadaABC, and EF Education First. These companies provide the lesson plans and materials, so you donât have to worry about creating your own curriculum. All you need is a computer, a stable internet connection, and a quiet place to teach.
Meet the Requirements: Most companies require you to have a bachelorâs degree and some teaching experience. However, the teaching experience can be flexible â it doesnât always have to be formal classroom experience. Volunteer work, tutoring, or even coaching can count. Additionally, having a TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) certification can make you a more attractive candidate.
Apply and Interview: Once youâve chosen a platform, youâll need to fill out an application and go through an interview process. This usually includes a demo lesson where you teach a sample class. Donât worry if youâre nervous â these companies provide training and support to help you succeed.
What to Expect as an Online English Teacher
Teaching English online can be a very rewarding experience. You get to interact with students from different cultures and help them improve their English skills. Hereâs what you can expect from the job:
Flexible Schedule: One of the best things about teaching English online is the flexibility. You can often choose your own hours, which makes it easy to fit teaching around your travel plans. Create a Good Teaching Environment: Make sure you have a quiet, well-lit space to teach from. A good headset with a microphone and a stable internet connection are essential. Some companies might also require a background thatâs free of distractions.
Engage with Your Students: Building a good rapport with your students is key. Be enthusiastic, patient, and encouraging. Use props and visual aids to make your lessons more engaging and fun.
Be Reliable: Show up on time for your classes and be prepared. Reliability is important in building a good reputation with both your students and the platform youâre working for.
Conclusion
Teaching English online is a fantastic way to make money while traveling the world. With the right approach and a bit of preparation, you can start teaching and earning from anywhere. If youâre planning to be away for a while, renting out your home can be a great way to earn some extra cash. Hereâs how you can get started:
Choose a Platform: There are several websites where you can list your home for rent. Some of the most popular ones include Airbnb, VRBO, and HomeAway. These platforms make it easy to connect with people looking for a place to stay.
Prepare Your Home: Before you list your home, make sure itâs clean and well-maintained. Remove any personal items and valuables. Consider adding some nice touches like fresh linens, toiletries, and a welcome guide with information about your home and the local area. Good photos are crucial, so take high-quality pictures of each room to make your listing stand out.
Set Your Price: Research similar listings in your area to get an idea of what to charge. Consider factors like location, amenities, and the time of year. You want to set a competitive price that will attract guests but also ensure youâre making a decent income.
Understanding Legal Regulations
Before you start renting out your home, itâs important to understand the legal regulations in your area. Here are a few things to consider:
Check Local Laws: Some cities have specific rules about short-term rentals. You may need a permit or license, and there could be limits on how many days per year you can rent out your home. Check with your local government to find out whatâs required.
Homeowners Association (HOA) Rules: If you live in a community with an HOA, make sure you understand their rules regarding rentals. Some HOAs have restrictions or require approval before you can rent out your property.
Insurance: Contact your home insurance provider to make sure youâre covered for short-term rentals. Some companies offer specific policies or riders for this purpose. Itâs important to be fully protected in case of any damage or accidents.
Managing Your Rental
Once your home is listed and you have guests booked, managing your rental effectively is key to ensuring a smooth experience:
Communication: Be responsive to inquiries and communicate clearly with your guests. Provide them with all the information they need for a comfortable stay.
Cleaning and Maintenance: Arrange for regular cleaning and maintenance to keep your home in top condition. You might want to hire a property manager or cleaning service to take care of this while youâre away.
Reviews: Encourage your guests to leave reviews after their stay. Positive reviews will help attract more guests and can boost your listingâs visibility on rental platforms.
Conclusion

With the right preparation and understanding of local regulations, you can turn your empty home into a source of income. The Best Online Side Hustles Through Which I Can Increase MyIncome
Finding the best online side hustles can be a game-changer for boosting your income. Let me share some solid options based on facts and personal experiences.
Side hustles online are a fantastic way to earn extra cash, and the beauty lies in the variety of options available. Let's explore a few based on proven stats and personal insights.
One of the side hustles I've found quite rewarding is freelancing. Platforms like Upwork or Fiverr offer a broad range of opportunitiesâfrom writing and graphic design to programming and virtual assistance. According to a report by Freelancer com, freelancers in tech and writing fields can earn around $30-$50 per hour on average, depending on their skills and expertise.
Another lucrative avenue is affiliate marketing. By promoting products or services and earning commissions on sales, it's a flexible way to make money. The Affiliate Marketing Benchmark Report by Awin suggests that the affiliate marketing industry is growing steadily, with 81% of brands leveraging this method to boost sales.
If you're into creating content, YouTube or blogging can be a fantastic side hustle. YouTubers, for example, make money through ads, sponsorships, and merchandise sales. Statista reports that the highest-paid YouTuber earned $29.5 million in 2023, showcasing the earning potential in this field.
Moreover, tapping into the booming e-commerce industry via platforms like Shopify or Etsy could be another avenue. With global e-commerce sales projected to hit $6.4 trillion by 2024 (Statista), selling products online can be profitable if you find a niche and market it well.
However, choosing the right side hustle depends on your skills, interests, and dedication. What works for one person might not be the best fit for another.
To sum it up, in the realm of online side hustles, the opportunities are vast. Freelancing, affiliate marketing, content creation, and e-commerce are among the top options backed by statistics and personal experiences. Ultimately, finding the best fit requires considering your strengths, interests, and commitment level. Remember, success often stems from dedication, continuous learning, and adapting to market trends in the online space.
