What to Eat Before & After a Workout
Are you looking to optimize your performance during your next workout? Do you want to ensure that your body is properly fueled before and after you exercise? If so, then you’ve come to the right place
Before a workout
The food you eat before working out will fuel your body and give it the energy it needs to perform at its best. Your pre-workout meal should contain carbohydrates and protein. Carbohydrates will give you energy, while protein will help to build and maintain muscle. Examples of pre-workout snacks include a sandwich, a smoothie, or energy bars.
For breakfast, try eating a nutritious balance of carbohydrates and protein. You could have eggs on toast, porridge, or a banana and yogurt.
If you’re exercising in the afternoon, then a light snack, like low–sugar fruit, nuts or half a sandwich, is advised one to two hours prior. This will provide fuel for your workout but won’t be too heavy that it affects your exercise.
If you’re exercising in the evening and dinner wasn't very recent, then a small snack like yogurt with fruit or a hard-boiled egg should be enough to keep you going.
If exercising in the morning, it is best to have a light, easily digestible snack an hour before. Porridge with fruit, toast and nut butter or a smoothie are all good breakfast and snack options.
